Upgrade including xorg 1.7.4.901---breaks radeon driver

Arch linux 32-bit
AMD 2400XP, ATI Radeon 7500 Graphics
Just did a system upgrade which included xorg-server being upgraded to version 1.7.4.901
This seems to have broken the "radeon" driver--I get a very dim green screen. I have now got the system running with the vesa driver.
Google shows that there is a known issue here, but I did not see my exact symptoms or a cure.
Anyone have any clues?

I have almost the same setup but with a Sempron 2200 and Radeon 9000pro.  I was getting hard lockups when starting glxgears then I started X without an xorg.conf file and looked at my Xorg.0.log and saw it was using 'ati' as the video driver when X autoconfigured itself.  Try starting X without an xorg.conf file(if your using one) then look at your log file.  I think I was using an old xorg.conf file with 'Driver "radeon"' in the Device section that may have been the cause for the lockup because when I changed my driver to just 'ati' in my xorg.conf I stopped getting lockups when trying to do mesa/3d stuff(glxgears etc.,).

    A downgrade to xorg-server-1.4.90-3 should solve the problem.

  • Upgraded to Xorg 7.0 - Where is GLXgears?

    I have just upgraded to xorg 7.0. glxgears and glxinfo are no longer present on my system. What is the package that I need to install to get them back?

    I had read that mesa was somehow outdated and dangerous now - one of many posts I read while searching the forums for answers. Do I run the risk of breaking anything if I download and install it? These days it seems that every time I install anything new, I break a bunch of other stuff. Rolling release is great, but only if you keep up with it all the time!

    This is all outdated information.
    glxinfo and glxgears were in mesa-apps but recently they were moved in the mesa package.
    The part about mesa unsafe was that before the splitted xorg 7.0,  there was a mesa package in extra that could conflict/cause problems  with the mesa drivers from xorg. This is no longer the case. That mesa package in extra has been removed and the mesa package in current is the one from xorg. There shouldn't be any problem using mesa.
    Run 'pacman -Ql xorg-apps' to see what's in xorg-apps.

  • Radeon 9600TX + Xorg 1.6.1.901: Disturbing Flicker

    Hi! I try to setup a Radeon 9600 TX (R300 Chip) with Xorg 1.6.1.901 and xf86-video-ati. I want to use 2D + 3D acceleration. This is a new system setup using XFCE. (I intend to add compiz later.)
    Acceleration for 3D is present + ok. Window resizing is rather choppy but acceptable. But I see a disturbing flicker when logged into X, as if waves were running down the screen horizontally. This is very inconvenient and hurts the eyes after a short time. Also the font in the VCs is not displayed in sharp edges but I do not know if this is interrelated (or erroneous).
    I would like to keep the xorg.conf minimal. Since the DDC/EDID data that shows up in the log is correct, I did not add any ModeLines or mode setup. The log shows that xorg makes all decisions right (how it seems to me).
    There are loads of posts about ati issues but I did not find anything that helped me solving my problem. Perhaps someone can help? Thanks in advance.

    First I tried to force the monitor into 1280x1024@75 mode which does not show the flicker. In three horizontal areas in the screen, the display was very fuzzy. So I had to decide whether use 60Hz mode with the flicker problem or use 75 Hz mode with the fuzzyness problem.
    I tried the first alternative by ignoring the EDID data and force the display mode but I didn't succeed with solving the fuzzyness problem. So I decided to go back to 60 Hz mode and try to solve the flicker problem. (I already tried 'Option "Flicker"  "false" - no effect!) I have no more ideas.

    Firefox has suddenly gone wrong. I was successfully running both Firefox and Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7. My laptop is new and has plenty of RAM and HDD. I auto-accept upgrades including the most recent Firefox upgrade and the suggested upgrade to Adobe Flash 10.1. But after this, Firefox stopped working and does not work when I re-load Firefox 3.6. Also IE8 now works very slowly and does not locate major websites like Microsoft without a 'can't find the website message' and having to pressing Return a second time. When I do get to the Mozilla website and click on the button to try to download Firefox 3.6.6, I get this message "Oops! Internet Explorer could not find mozilla3.snt.utwente.nl". Can you help with what has gone wrong? As it stands, I can't use Firefox at all. Note: because Firefox did not work after the upgrade, I've downloaded the IE8 version of the Adobe Flash 10.1. What I really want is to be able to use both Firefox and IE8. But is this possible if they use different versions of Adobe Flash?

    I have been having the same problem as the original poster. After upgrading to Ffx 3.6.6, the program asks you to upgrade to Flash Player Plugin 10.1. I download and installed 10.1 only to find videos weren't loading.
    In my case, the problem is the previous installation of Flash Player (9.0.47) was somehow messing things up. To fix this, because I already had Flash plugin 10.1 installed I had to uninstall 10.1 using the uninstaller from adobe and then manually remove any files related the old flash player plugin 9.0.47
    Here is a run-down of my process:
    0. To check if you have a previous installation of the Flash Plugin lurking around, in Firefox go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins (tab). At this point you may seen both Flash plugins.
    1. Proceed to uninstall Flash Plugin 10.1. Adobe provides an uninstaller here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
    ( you have to make sure you have nothing running when you execute the installer).
    2. On my Mac (sorry I don't know what it is in Windows) I searched the hard drive for any files/folders with "Shockwave". I found a folder called "Shockwave 10". It wasn't removed by Adobe's uninstaller. For safety I deleted it and then emptied the trash.
    3. I then went to My HD -> Library -> Internet Plugins.
    Remove the file and folder named "Flash player.old"
    4. Restarted; ran the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 installer. Restarted again.
    5. Opened up ffx and double checked the plugins list (see step 1). Version 10.1 is installed and available. Went to problem sites to test it out and Success!

  • Random blackout atfer upgrading to xorg 1.6?

    OK, I'm not very sure if this is related to xorg, here is the situation:
    After upgrading to xorg 1.6, I restart X and start firefox to surf the internet,
    atfer a few hours of usage, my screen suddenly blackouts, and it seems like a hard crash,
    I can't use crtl-alt-backspace to kill X nor use crtl-alt-Fn to switch between virtual consoles,
    this is very frustrating since I'm always very proud of my super-rock-solid Arch,
    I have NEVER had issue like this, since it happens after upgrading to xorg 1.6,
    I suspect the incident is related to it,
    does anyone have a similiar situation?
    any suggests or thoughts would be very appriciated.

    hello..
    i have already posted about that in testing-forums, but since xorg 1.6 and kernel 2.6.29 have moved to extra, though i'd create a seperate topic about that.
    after i have upgraded to xorg 1.6 and kernel 2.6.29 my wacom device (as built-in, not usb) on my thinkpad x41t stopped working.
    before upgrade i have used xorg with hotplugging enabled. everything worked fine.
    after wacom stopeed working i removed everything regarding input devices from xorg.conf -> no change
    put an fdi-file for wacom -> no change
    installed linuxwacom-dev -> no change
    i don't really know, if it's a kernel or an xorg issue. loading wacom drivers manually still doesn't solve the problem. no warnings or errors about wacom in xorg-log or messages.log
    how could i check, wether my system recognizes the device properly at all? it doesn't show up in lspci or in lsusb.
    any help would be great.

    well, upgraded again to xorg-server 1.6, disabled hotplugging, installed linuxwacom-dev from aur and the wacom works as allways. (had to edit xmodmap one more time, since kbd returns other keycodes than evdev does :-| ). no matter, done is done.
    but intel driver returns broken graphics if i rotate screen with xrandr.
    i guess there is no way around this execpt switching to the ultra-slow legacy driver?
    just for comparison - glxgears fps:
    intel: ~900fps
    intel-legacy: ~280fps

    since the upgrade to xorg-server 1.16 i can't get X to work again on my thinkpad R50e with an old intel integrated chip (Intel Extreme Graphics 2).

    [ 45.465] (--) controlling tty is VT number 1, auto-enabling KeepTty
    I login at tty1 (which is the first one visible after boot) and run startx from there.
    I added the following to my .xinitrc:
    echo "vt: $XDG_VTNR"
    The output was:
    vt: 1
    That would be ok, right? Or is it $XDG_VTNR + 1?
    So i am wondering what is forcing X to use vt 2. Or how i can tell X to use vt 1.

  • AltGr key not working after upgrade to Xorg 7.3

    So, I upgraded to Xorg 7.3, and everything seemingly worked fine.
    Then I tried writing an e-mail address, and pressing AltGr+2 which should give me an (at) symbol didn't work. After fiddling about abit, I concluded that  AltGr did not work at all.
    I tried the suggested solutions in the wiki, but none worked for me. I also tried setting Option "XkvVariant "nodeadkeys", but no luck there either.
    Here's the keyboard section of my xorg.conf:

    It seems the problem has resolved itself. I did a pacman -Syu today, and although only libsamplerate was upgraded, my AltGr key functions properly again. Kind of weird, as libsamplerate seems to have something to do with audio.. But hey, it works, and I'm not complaining.

    The solution is simple: before, I was using the xf86-video-radeonhd driver and now I'm using the xf86-video-ati driver, and I can see the TV again

  • Upgrade to Xorg 7.0 - Screen Jitters

    I just upgraded to Xorg 7.0.  Unfortunately, the screen jitters every 5 second or so.  It is very annoying.
    I am using an old Toshiba 4020CDT laptop with Chips and Tech CT 65555 Video chipset.
    I installed the xf86-video-chips driver.
    Any suggestions?

    I solved it.  Xorg --configure did not create a proper xorg.conf.  It choose the vesa driver, not the chips driver.  It also did not specify the HorizSync and VertRefresh.
    In the Monitor Section, I added the following:
    HorizSync   31.5 - 48.5
    VertRefresh 50.0 - 90.0
    In the Device section, I changed Driver "vesa" to Driver "chips"
    In the Screen section, I added the following:
    DefaultDepth 16
    Now it works great!

    Situation with older ATI graphic cards and their Linux drivers went a bit strange lately. I understand why Catalyst is no more present in official repository - if I can still get it from AUR, then its fine for me. But now I just don't know what to do...
    Can't use catalyst (fglrx): 9.4 doesn't support my card, older drivers doesn't work with new xorg (1.6).
    RadeonHD is very slow for my card.
    Opensource ATI (radeon) driver is almost good but I have strange problem with thin lines on the right side of my screen when something moves. As far as I know this driver doesn't yet work with DRI2/UXA - only experimental support for those now.

    And here;s my question to Arch community: what should I do?
    Should I do something with my xorg.conf?
    Or should I wait for new release of Catalyst driver - will it ever support my X2300? Maybe after final release of Ubuntu 9.04 (I've heard that ATI releases its drivers soon after that)?

    i m using x2300 also and i just keep using xorg 1.5.3 (luckily i hvn't clear my pacman cache) and catalyst-old 9.3 from the AUR.  and according to the phoronix site :

    something more usable on the 3d side for the open radeonhd driver is coming.
