Upgrade ios5 from a "different" mac

I'm away from my home mac. Is there any way for me to upgrade to ios 5 from my mac at work? without erasing anything on the phone (3Gs)
Thanks

My question is:
Being away from the home Mac, on the secondary (different) Mac is it possible to:
- first disable syncronization in the iTunes
- back up iPhone
- download and update to iOS5 (the update deletes everything)
- restoring everything from the back up
Thanks

can you set up apple tv using 2 different itunes accounts from 2 different macs in same household?

No, you can only connect to one Home Sharing account at a time. If you want to see the content of the other Mac's library you will have to turn off Home Sharing on the Apple TV and log back in with the other iTunes account.

  • Using (Gmail) IMAP account from 2 different Macs using Mail ?

Would it be feasible/useful to access an (Gmail) IMAP mail account from 2 different Macs using Mail on each Mac?
    My current situation:
    - My main computer is an iMac in my bedroom on which I use Mail for my Gmail IMAP account.
    - Sometimes (ex: late at night) I can't work from the bedroom and use a PowerBook and the web interface of Gmail. However, I don't like the threaded view for managing emails and therefore prefer the Apple Mail interface.
    Question:
Would it make sense that I use Apple Mail on the PowerBook to access the Gmail account instead of using the web interface?
    What would be the inconveniences?

Doing so is pretty easy, and standard. That is what IMAP accounts are for, and many computers can access the same account, and what email client they choose doesn't matter.

Just open System Preferences>Users & Groups and unlock the preference pane with your root password.
Set the New Account to be an Administrator and fill in the rest of the data and then click "Create User".
I would suggest using this user to be YOU with admin capabilities. I wouldn't use the root user - too much damage could occur if you're not sure what you're doing. If you have files, etc., that you want to move to this account, simply but them in the Shared folder - or if you 'rescued' some old files and the like from your 'trashed' MBP, you can put them in your NEW admin account folders.
Hope I've explained myself well - call back with any questions!

  • How do I view Time Machine from a different Mac?

Using Pondini's excellent tutorial, I navigated to the Time Machine backups from an earlier Mac (on the same "Time Machine" partition of an external HDD.)
First, I was at the level of Macintosh HD/Users, and I could see my earlier Mac's users, but they had the usual red 'No Entry' circle against most of the Home folders so I couldn't see what was in them.
Next, I quit TM and went to the folder I actually wanted (Mail Downloads) in Finder and tried again. This time, though I had option-clicked for other TM backups, it showed me the folder for my current Mac's backup (there's only been one or two so far). When I used the TM timeline slider to go back to that same folder on my other Mac, TM refused to budge. It stayed on my current Mac's window.
Basically, because of the permissions issue, I cannot view the data on my older Mac's TM backup using my current Mac, even though in theory I can option-click and get the window showing the earlier TM, and then select it and go into TM. I should point out that on the other Mac, I had a different account name and password - would this be the reason?

There may be a way to get access to the backups, but it will take some finagling.
It sounds like you got a new Mac, right?  And set it up from the old one, or its backups, and didn't use Setup Assistant when it first started up, but created that new user account first, then used MIgration Assistant.  If so, the pink box does explain exactly why you're in a pickle.
Post back with details of how you got where you are, how many accounts are where, whether you've done new backups, etc.
It's a bit more complicated than that. I had a new Mac which I set up in the usual way (via a previous Time Machine). Then I let the new Mac go out of my possession for far longer than I'd intended, and meanwhile used an older Mac, where I made many changes to things like iTunes, iPhoto, documents, games, videos, etc. For reasons of space - a HD half the size - and knowing I'd get my new Mac back again, I slimmed down that older Mac with fewer Users, trimming out a lot of older stuff, and a different main account.
When I got the new Mac back, I obviously couldn't use TM to update it due to my 'slimming down' operation on the older Mac (I'd have updated many things but also lost a lot too). In the event, iTunes was updated with little difficulty, iPhoto was updated over the network, likewise all my documents and stuff. The main problem was getting my emails and downloads updated which wasn't at all straightforward. That's where TM backups on the recent (older) Mac came in - I'd use TM to fetch over the bits and pieces that were still missing on my less recent (but newer) Mac.
On my old Mac I've been using for months, I only had 3 users, one of them Shared. On my new Mac I have 7 Users, but it was only my main (admin) account that mattered. I've actually found that I can access my old/recent Mac on the network using File Sharing rather than TM and have got what I want that way. Now I want to get the old Mac off my desk and get some space back. Once it's in a cupboard, I don't want to have to heave it out again in case I find I've forgotten an essential item. That's why I wanted to make sure I could access it via TM.
The main account on my old Mac will be either 501 or 502. On my new Mac, those numbers belong to 1) what was once my main account on a G5 which I had to abandon due to logic board problems, and 2) a deleted account that doesn't exist anymore.

  • Is it possible to edit my website  with web '08 from two different Macs?

Is it possible to work on iWeb on two different MACS?
I've attempted to move my domain.Site folder from my laptop and place it on my Power PC in the iWeb folder, but I continue to receive a familiar error message can't read the Domain.Site.
    Does anyone have any answers?
    Both are running iweb 08'

You could make the file available for download via your public folder and when one user updates it they could change the title to include the date of editing and upload it back to the Public folder and delete the original file. . To do that you'd want to archive (zip) the file (control-click on the file and select "Make archive of file xxxx" so it would upload without problems. Not as convenient but doable. You would just have to make sure to identify the date of editing so there would be no problem.

  • Browsing Time Capsule from a DIFFERENT mac

My primary mac is in the shop. I have a time capsule backup of that mac
I borrowed an IMac and need to get some files from the usual mac off of the Time Capsule. I do NOT want to back up the IMac on the Time Capsule...I only want to find selected files off of the Time Capsule with it.
Is this possible? I can see the TC from the IMac, but can only see a ".sparsebundle" file. When I choose "browse other Time Machine disks" from the Time Machine icon, it doesn't see my time capsule
thank you very much in advance for your help

thank you so much for the response
I had been able to get as far as you instructed, and I can see both my time capsule and the sparsebundle file within it.
what I don't understand is how to utilize that sparsebundle file in order to find the specific files I'm looking for within it
is it simply a matter of double-clicking on the sparsebundle file to "mount" it like a disk? Is there any risk of me doing damage to the backup on the TC?
    thanks again for your help

  • Can i upload to iWeb from to different macs

A couple of weeks ago I bought me an MacBook, i have a iMac too.
When I uploaded some pictures from the MacBook I found to my suprise
(bad suprise) that the only fotos left on my web were the ones from the MacBook, fixed it later.
So I wonder, is there any way that i can work my web pages from the 2 Macs?

  • Home Sharing from two different Macs to a Media Center

I am using an old G5 iMac as a Media Center in my basement. I have Home Sharing setup on my daughter's Macbook so that when she buys new music, movies or TV shows they automatically transfer to the Media Center iTunes Library. Is it possible to get my iMac iTunes to do the same thing at the same time? It seems like the Media Center will only Home Share with my daughter's Library and will not let me Home Share my Library. Can anyone tell if it it's possible to have two different accounts / libraries Home Sharing to a central iTunes Library?

The simplest way is for you to select the entire listing in iTunes and drag all the songs out to a folder. This will copy them, not remove them from iTunes. Do the same on the other iTunes.
Transfer the folder over to the new Mac, over a network, or burn them to a DVD.
Now duplicate one of the folders (for safety reasons before proceeding).
Open this duplicate folder. Open the other folder. Select all the tracks in this other folder and drag them to the new folder: When asked if you want to overwrite files of the same name choose 'Skip' and check 'Apply to all'.
This will then move all files over except where there is already a file with that song title. If you have recordings of the same song by more than one artist you will have to sort that out manually.
This done, open iTunes on the new computer, select all the files in the merged folder and drag them to the Music list.

  • Publishing iWeb pages from 2 different Macs

I have recently bought a MacBook to complement my G4 Powermac desktop - the desktop has iLife05 installed and the MacBook iLife06.
I am really enjoying using the iWeb application and would like to be able to publish iWeb pages from both my MacBook and my desktop mac. Is there anyway I can get iLife06 transferred onto my desktop. I have already been firewiring files between the two - can I do the same with software or do I need to buy iLife all over again?

    Hi James,
Your response definitely helped me since my boss and I are trying to maintain a website on both of our computers...
BUT, i have a huge problem. Before I knew how to transfer or find the domain files, I used the "FIND" option to search for the domain site on my computer and when i clicked it open, my site didn't come up but rather a prompt asking me what type of website I'd like to create. For months, the website we created showed up every time I opened iweb but now when i simply clicked on domain.site or whatever it was that turned up in the "Find" folder, I can't bring up or locate the site I created on the computer so I have no way to update it or put it on a disc for my boss... Do you have any idea what caused my site to disappear simply by clicking on domain or any idea where i could find my site??
    please help!! thanks!
    Vanessa
one more thing: is it possible for my boss to edit the content of the website without iweb? could she do it through the actual website with a password or something? just curious... also if i can't get that original domain site back, is there a way i can transfer my website to a different website other than iweb so that i can keep updating without having to redo the whole thing? even being able to transfer separate blogs from iweb to the original site would work too - anything to not have to redo the welcome page and picture pages that are already online

  • Time Machine Backup:  Can I read a backup from a different Mac?

I have two macs. One is a Macbook Pro, recently Time Machine Backuped, out for service. The other is a G4 iMac running Tiger. Can I read files from the back-up from my macbook pro? I can search the folders.... but do not actually see the files. So, I think I could be either looking in the wrong place or my old iMac is just not able to see them.
If I upgrade my G4 iMac to 10.5.6.... will I be able to see all files on the other computer's backup?
In other words... if you have two macs that have time machine.... will I be able to view the other macs' back-up and use files?

Sorry, I missed the other Mac being on Tiger. Pullman is right -- TM's backups may look to us mere mortals like ordinary files and folders, but they most certainly aren't. Apple had to make some changes to the basic OSX file system to make TM's magic work, so I'd expect Tiger to be completely confuzzled by it.
And yes, once updated to Leopard, one Mac can look at (and restore from) another Mac's backups.

  • Checking one IMAP account from 2 different Macs using Mac Mail

    Greetings,
    New to the forums...
Have recently switched from using POP 3 account methods to IMAP (our new host provider encourages IMAPs, due to e-mail dupes showing up + more stable). Both my biz partner and I check the same accounts form both of our Macs (I check her e-mail, she checks mine, etc.). With the new IMAP accounts, sometimes we both get the same e-mails, other times one of us only gets the e-mail off the server.
Is it NOT possible to have 2 machines check the same IMAP account? (seems like that would be strange, i.e. a work at office/work from home scenario).
Assuming you CAN do this, any clues out there as to what we may be doing incorrect, set up wise?

What you're saying doesn't make much sense to me, so I might be missing something. Anyway, here it goes:
Both my biz partner and I check the same accounts
form both of our Macs (I check her e-mail, she checks
    mine, etc.).
With IMAP, that means that whatever changes one of you make (i.e. reading, moving, deleting, etc.) will happen at the other side as well.
With the new IMAP accounts, sometimes we
both get the same e-mails, other times one of us only
gets the e-mail off the server.
Could it be because the message was deleted at the other side?
Is it NOT possible to have 2 machines check the same
    IMAP account?
That's exactly what IMAP accounts are for...

  • Hi everyone, i recently bought a mac book pro and tried using the facetime app on it, but unfortunately i am not able to log onto it from my mac and able to log onto my id from a different mac, ipad2, iphone. My mac is giving me problems only for my id

please send me how to use my macbook for facetime. Thanks.

If your machine came with Lion preinstalled, you cannot use it on another machine. It is tied to the machine it came with. You are allowed to make a one time transfer of the OS when you sell the machine as long as it remains with that machine.
If you purchase Lion from the app store, you are free to install it on as many Macs as you own - however, if/when you sell one of those Macs, you are required to uninstall Lion as the license is not transferable and you need to reinstall the original OS.
You can read the SLA for yourself - the link to the downloads to all licenses is here:

  • Merging iPhotos from two different Macs

This is probably not a new problem. We have two family computers and we download our photos on either one. I would like to create a master library and then store it somewhere for safekeeping. (Too many natural disasters in Texas!)
First, how should I consolidate all my photos (must be 70-80K) into one library
Second, where should I store it?
Third, how can I avoid this in the future?
    okay, thanks!!

to merge libraries you use Aperture or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager
where to store them - where ever you please as long as the hard drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - Personally I believe you need at least two copies in different locations for safety
How can you avoid this in the future? do all of your photos work on one computer
Next year with the new photos app and with iCloud library there probably will be a better solution - but until the software is released no one will know exactly what it will have or exactly how it will work
