Upgrade issues - new ipod with existing itunes

My previous 20GB ipod died and I have bought a 5th generation 30GB. When I try to install the new software using the disc provided in the box, I get the following dialogue box:
"Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel."
If I do this, will it erase all of my songs on the pc? I have Windows XP. If so, can anyone tell me how to update the software for the new ipod without losing my current personal library of songs?

Hi Jjonty,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
You shouldn't have to download more software (iTunes)
since you already had an iPod. Did you upgrade your
iTunes to the latest version? You
should be able to just hook your iPod up to your
computer and have it work. I am a Mac user so I am
not positive how your PC works with the iPod.

Excellent. Thank you. Seems to be working beuatifully on downloading the whole catalogue. Great news as I have been going through iPod commuting withdrawal.
Thanks for taking the time to answer. I appreciate it.

Just unwrapped my shiny new iPod and connected it to my laptop and part way through the update an unknown error occurred and the update stopped as it was unable to update disk. Error (-69).
Anyone know how I can sort this out or shall I take the iPod back?

  • Synching new iPod with existing iTunes

Hi, my old iPod mini was replaced by apple within warranty for a defect. How do I load all my songs that are currently on my iTunes onto the new iPod mini. It's an iPod Mini 6GIG and I'm using iTunes 4.7.1.30 software.
    Thanks

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
    Still no joy, see these.
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod.
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.

    Strange iPod behavior.
When restoring the iPod, put it into disk mode first.

  • New IPOD w/Existing ITUNES, CAN'T download 7.4 & NO SETUP ASSISTANT?

Ok. I have two ipods. Now Three... My One IPOD has been updated with new version 7.4, my other one-(shuffle) was updated with 7.4....but..
I just got the new IPOD and when I connect it to my computer, it does not send me through the Setup Assistant....just tells me that I need a newer version of 7.4 to use the IPOD.
The problem comes when it directs me to the 'Download 7.4 version'...I hit the control key and says "thank you for downloading itunes"..
THe issue is that I already have iTunes and it asks me if I want to replace my existing itunes setup?
I say ok,and save it and nothing....Same screen and no prompts...
With my other two ipods, as soon as I have plugged into my computer; it recognizes it as a new ipod and takes me through to register and stuff....I can't download new version....so I am now in a rutt......
Can anyone help me to understand how I download the new version 7.4 into the new IPOD, so I can get started on the Setup Assistant?
    What am I missing here???
    Thanks..

OK. Now trying to figure out what you are saying here. It sounds to me like you are only downloading iTunes 7.4 to wherever it is your default location is for downloading and not actually installing it.
From what you are saying above it sounds as if you are only repeatedly downloading it and Windows is asking you if you want to overwrite the file it had previously downloaded and saved.
After you download the file does it give you an option to open or run the file? If so you need to do that. If not you need to find where the file is being saved to (save it to your desktop if your not sure where it is going by default) and double click it to start the install procedure.
The tips here may be useful http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976
But honestly it sounds to me as though you didn't actually install it.
As far as the latter part of the question goes. iTunes does not actually get installed to the new iPod. The new iPod Nano does, however, require iTunes 7.4 to be installed.

  • New ipod with old itunes, do I have to unistall old ipod?

I recently purchased a new iOS 8.1 ipod touch to replace my 6.6.  When installing it I told iTunes to place certain old playlists on my new ipod.  Now I'm getting new syncing errors in which it loses my place in audiobooks. Never had this happen before.
As a computer challenged old man, is there something I need to do to make this my new default player. I wonder if its resetting my files to what my old ipod had rather than resyncing it with the current position on my new ipod.

They are in the Audio book library and not in your Music library, right?
In iTunes on your computer in the Get Inof for the Audio Books is remember playback position checked?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all audiobooks and resync
To delete all AudioBooks go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Music and delete them
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • New ipod with old itunes

i recently got a new ipod and when i try to put the songs on it from my library, it will only put 130 of the 1000+ songs in my library. how can i put all of the songs on my ipod?

For Windows system, the typical location would be...
My Documents -> My Music -> iTunes -> iTunes Music
then navigate to the artist folder then to the album folder.
You can always check where iTunes thinks the file is located by selecting the song in iTunes, do a Get Info on the track, then in the first tab/window where it shows the summary info on the track, at the bottom is a line "Where" and that will show the location that iTunes expects the file to be.

  • New ipod on Existing iTunes

I currently have an iPod classic and have recently purchased an iPod touch that I have not used yet. Tonight, I am going to try synching it to my current iTunes. Should I run into any problems trying to share an iTunes library among a few differnt iPods? My wife has one also so that would be 3 iPods using the same iTunes, same computer.
Additionally I backed up all my music on CD's through iTunes as I am going to be getting a new computer. Once I get my new computer, download iTunes, and login does all my "purchased" music through iTunes transfer or does that move with my backup disks?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can use as many iPods on a PC as you want. iTunes knows each one's unique serial number.

  • Sync iPod with existing iTunes

My roommate already has an ipod & itunes. if we listen to the same thing, can i just sync my ipod to her library and it not mess anything up? i don't want to mess up her library.

Ya, generally syncing is a one way trasnfer where when your iPod is set up for auto updating, the iTunes library is mirrored onto the iPod. So if you plug in your iPod it likely will simply copy the library into your iPod.
The thing I am not sure about is that on the iPod you can give ratings (one to five stars) to songs and it keeps track of play counts, so when you hook up to your computer again, those ratings and play counts are added back to the library. So you might want to find out from your room mate if accurate playcounts and ratings are important. If not, then have at it. If it is, and your roommate wants to maintain those to accurately represent HER use and rating, then after the initial sync, you will want to change the preference on your iPod to manual syncing so those things will not be updated back to the compuer. But you will now have to manually add new songs to the iPod.

  • I own an iPod Touch 4g. Now i'm planning to buy iPod Touch 5g. Is it possible for me to register the new one with existing Apple ID so that i can transfer the apps from my existing account to my new Ipod 5g?

I own an iPod Touch 4g. Now i'm planning to buy iPod Touch 5g. Is it possible for me to register the new iPod with existing Apple ID so that i can transfer the apps from my existing account to my new Ipod 5g?

There should definitely be no issue. You can register more than one Apple device with the same Apple ID and get the same apps on both devices without having to pay for the apps again.
Alternatively, if you want all your settings to say the same, do a backup of your old iPod Touch and then whe you receive the new iPod, restore the backup on it and it'll save you the trouble from having to redownload everything.
    Cheers.

  • HT1386 When I connect my iPod Touch to a new laptop (Macbook Air) the "Info" tab won't appear and therefore I cannot sync it with my new iTunes. How can I sync this iPod with the iTunes on my new laptop?

There is no Info tab in Mavericks
if you use OS X v.10.8.5 or earlier. If you use OS X Mavericks v.10.9 or later, your contacts, calendars, and other info are updated on your computers and iOS devices via iCloud. For more information, see iCloud Help at icloud.com.

  • New Ipod Nano on Itunes but won't import songs

I just plugged my son's brand new Ipod Nano into Itunes and it appeared on the left side as David's Ipod but when I went to import songs from my library it won't allow me to do it. It has a circle with a line through it anytime I attempt to drag a song on to it. I have two other Ipods (nano and mini) and never had this happen. I installed the software that came with it before this happened. It also says something like Ipod can't be upgraded because playlists no longer exist...When I first plugged it in the Itunes said that the library was too large for the nano and that it could select the songs for me. When I said yes it started downloading all these songs from the library (songs my son didn't want). I managed to stop it by having everything deleted off the nano but now I can't import anything. Help!!! Thanks

I actually have the windows XP and not ME if that makes a difference

  • New Ipod logging onto itunes

Got a new 27.8GB color ipod. Hooked up and recognized my device at apple.com. I had a previous ipod and account. When recognized by apple.com was asked "You have an existing account, do you want new ipod erased?"
Had already loaded new ipod with old account songs. Said yes to the above and deleted all songs from my new ipod. Q.... I can't find old ipod info, which I assumed would automatically be loaded onto my new ipod. Is the information still available?
By the way, I don't remember loading the new ipod from old account. Obviously I, or my technologically competent kids did.
    Any help?

You can load any number of iPod devices with one iTunes library and account. So that's not the problem.
Are you sure your shuffle is charged? Did you try plugging it into a different USB jack? When you look in "My Computer" is your shuffle recognized? Does iTunes see your shuffle and list it as a device when it's plugged in?
Does your shuffle need a software update? OR, can you restore your shuffle? Go to the settings tab and click on the "Restore" tab.
Are you trying to use autofill for your shuffle? Perhaps, to get started, you should turn off autofill and make a playlist. I have found that it is easier to make a playlist of all of the music I want to add to my shuffle. Then I pull this playlist on top of my shuffle and it is updated.
Your shuffle should play your purchased music with no problems!

  • HT1206 Can I sync my wife's new Iphone with "my" Itunes or should I just set up a new Itunes account on her computer???

I just tried to sync my wife's new Iphone with "my" ITunes.  Bad mistake!!  I guess "my" itunes thought her phone was mine and "somehow" went into "restore" mode and basically turned "her" phone into mine - ie. contacts, photos, etc.
Can your have two phones one Itunes??  Or should I just open a new Itunes account on her computer and "start" from scratch??  If I do the later, how do I transfer all the music on "my" Itunes to hers???

You can sync as many iphone/ipads/ipods as you like to one computer/library.

  • New iPod to old iTunes library

I have succumbed to the tempation of a new iPod with video. I have an old 3G iPod and a decent music library built up, including some ITMS stuff, in iTunes.
I presume it is straightforward to sync this with my new iPod? Will iTunes recognise the new iPod as a foreign user?
    Any advice?

It won't be a "foreign user" if you're connecting it to the same Mac user account. iTunes will try to give the iPod the same default name (like "Martin Toal's iPod.") You will probably want to assign the new iPod a different name, to avoid any possible conflicts.
