Upgrade iTunes 6.0 - ALL Exclamation Points

Running OSX 10.4.2 Quicktime 7.0.3 my son upgraded to iTunes 6.0 yesterday. Now all his old music has exlamation points next to each song. When a song is dbl clicked it says "The song _ could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Clicked yes and looked in Previous Music Folder but it appears to only be data files. Cannot find the songs. Where did they go? Repaired disk permissions. He only has one computer so I don't think it's authorizations. Please help! Thanks.

To effectively follow what is happening here you must 1st understand what the word 'Library' means in iTunes.
IMHO it is the main reason a lot of people get confused
The dictionary says... with my comments in red
Library
a building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded music for people to read, borrow, or refer to : a school library | [as adj. ] a library book. #1 library is a building or room (iTunes Music folder)
• a collection of books and periodicals held in such a building or room : the Institute houses an outstanding library of 35,000 volumes on the fine arts. #2 library is all the books, recorded music etc. stored in this building or room (the Data files inside the iTunes Music folder)
• a collection of films, recorded music, genetic material, etc., organized systematically and kept for research or borrowing : a record library. #3 library (iTunes Library file)
• a series of books, recordings, etc., issued by the same company and similar in appearance. #4 library Podcasts etc.
• a room in a private house where books are kept. #5 library your own private collections stored elsewhere, separate folders on other HD's etc.
• (also software library) Computing a collection of programs and software packages made generally available, often loaded and stored on disk for immediate use. xml copies of playlists and library files
I am sure you get the idea... iTunes uses the iTunes Library file (tag data of the Music files) to manage your data library (the Music files)
Back to your question "since we are NOT selecting, "copy files when adding to library" this means that it won't copy what we have already will it?....I just want to make sure I understand before I try it."
Means it will not copy any data files to the iTunes Music folder when adding the tag data for each song to the iTunes Library file... if the 'tag' data already exists for any song it will be checked and corrected if need be and the link to the actual data file will be redone.... if any songs are found that do not exist in the iTunes Library file they will be added but as it says above the files will not be copied, they will remain in their present location.
I hope that helps Frank ... if you need any help or anything not clear come and ask ... TP

  • Method for itunes to list all exclamation point songs

lost a bunch of my music couple thousand songs....is there an easy way to have itunes list all exlamation point songs.

Generally setting a common Album title and Album Artist will fix split albums.
For compilations of tracks by different artists set the album artist to Various Artists and also tick Album is a compilation of songs by various artists.
For deeper problems see Grouping tracks into albums.

  • HT203175 I don't know whether these articles apply or not.  Here's what I seeing in my iTunes program.  When I open iTunes, I see little exclamation points next to EVERY song that has been downloaded.  Therefore, I can't play them from my computer or dwnl

Can somebody help me get rid of these exclamation points so that I can download all my songs to my iPod?  Please?  I don't know why they appeared, as I did have the songs working before and they were on my iPod.  But, I didn't want ALL of them on there and I didn't know I could "select" which songs to send to the iPod.  However, it's been a few months since I messed with it.  But, yesterday, when I went to select my songs, I noticed all these excalamation points on everything that was there.  Help, please!  Again, I can't play them from my computer AND they won't download to my iPod!
    Thanks,

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

  • How do I get all 'exclamation point' songs to show at the same time?

    Please help!
I need to delete TONS of broken tracks... they have all been reimported, but
the same old tracks with the exclamation points remain in my library!
What's even worse is you have to click on each individual track, just to get them to show whether they have the exclamation point? There has got to be an easier way!
Does anyone have any suggestions on what i can do to make ALL the tracks that are broken, show their exclamation points?
    Thank you!

    Hi
Maybe you can solve your problem by executing the following action :
+Open iTunes in "safe mode" (without external plug-ins) by using the keyboard shortcut Command-Option (while opening iTunes).+
This will open iTunes in safe mode, which disables some plug-ins ...
But normally all exclamation marks will disappear ... at least it solved my problem.
    I hope this helps

  • Missing itunes music files and exclamation point in iTunes 10

    Hi
iTunes on my macbook is a copy of from my desktop. I have not added any music to it and only use it to play music when I am travelling.
Last night I opened itunes and it was updating album covers..i think this is the first time i opened it since updating to 9.1? Anyways every track had an exclamation point and could not locate the file.
I updated to itunes 10 and that did not fix the issue.
I checked where my music should be stored (users/shared/itunes/itunes music) and the only files there are 2 folders called "Automatically add to itunes" and another called "Incomplete". In "Incomplete" are 2 files "downloads.bak" and "downloads.dat"
I have done a spotlight search for .m4 etc and find nothing...
    1. Is there anyway to find my music files or are they gone forever?
    2. Can I sync my iTouch to my macbook and will everything be copied to my macbook?
    3. Is there a easy way to copy or transfer itunes from my desktop to my macbook?
    Help

if i were in your situation, i'd start over on the MB.
the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in _*Target Disk Mode*_, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the source (desktop) to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the target (MB) (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
another option, which may be appealing if you travel a lot, is to get a suitably sized mobile HD such as [this|http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11030] and copy the iTunes folder there. then, on each Mac (one @ a time, mind you) launch iTunes while pressing option on the keyboard and, at the prompt, click on +choose library+. select the iTunes folder on the external.
that way, both computers will work with the same iTunes library. while @ home, the external is connected to the desktop. while on the road, it is connected to the MB. no matter on which machine you add content, it will be available to both.
if you opt for this setup, you must make sure the drive is mounted on your desktop before you launch iTunes.

  • Upgraded itunes, where's all my music?!!

I just upgraded to the newest version of itunes and now my itunes library is gone!! HELPPPPP

Same problem here. Can't find it (music) anywhere. I do feel that if it is due to upgrading then there shouldn't be an issue with itunes replacing the music. This "you get 1 download" unless it's an app is not right! I will not re-purchase all my songs from itunes. I will find another site to go to if I have to purchase them again. Why would I give itunes repeat business for the same songs when it wasn't my error that caused me to lose them? It was there stupid upgrade.... Customer Service isn't what it use to be, is it?

  • How do I find all the songs on my itunes with exclamation points

I'm trying to clean out my library of songs that don't play so I can fix them problem is I have a lot of songs is there any way I can see all exclamation points with out clicking in the song

Default apps are part of the iOS and cannot be deleted.  Search all home screens and all folders and/or search for it with Spotlight, that will tell you what folder it's in.
If not found, Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout.

Just purchased a new album on my iphone.  The album shows up in my itunes account but has exclamation points after it and I'm not able to play those songs.  How do I fix this?

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past purchases, delete the current copies from your iTunes library and then download again using the Purchased link in the right-hand column of the iTunes Store home page, or transfer them from the iPhone again.

  • Itunes exclamation point error

Some of my itunes music gets an exclamation point error mark. Which means that I can't play the track in the itunes library. Some of the error checked music won't even transfer to my ipod. I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue.

This is a huge problem. My library is on the c drive, but every time I reopen iTunes I'm greeted with another group of exclamation points (about 40 this time). It seems that my "favorite" songs are more likely to disappear, but there's no real pattern other than that. This HAS to be fixed. There's no other piece of software that I know of that exists with this kind of world-stopping problem (Word doesn't randomly lose documents, Excel doesn't randomly lose spreadsheets, etc), and this has continued through several versions of the software.
Please, Apple, fix this or give us a way to easily restore a backup folder to the main folder that will only replace the songs that are missing.

  • Deleting all exclamation mark'ed files in itunes

    Hi,
I understand that exclamation marked files in iTunes are basically broken links. I have quite a few and I'm much too lazy to fix them or delete them all one by one. Is there a function in iTunes to delete all exclamation marked references in one fell swoop?

Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/RemoveDeadTracks.txt (right click and Save As).
    Rename it to "RemoveDeadTracks.js".
Run it like you run any other program.
It'll remove all the ! entries from your iTunes library.

  • I have the exclamation point symbol next to podcasts that don't meet the criteria for said symbol based on the FAQ

When I'm looking through and trying to manage my Podcast library within iTunes, I see the exclamation point symbol next to several. My first issue is the fact that there are many that have this symbol that I only wanted a few episodes and not a subscription. How can I fix this problem?
My second issue is that for many of the podcasts with the exclamation point symbol, they don't fit the criteria based on what's in the Symbol FAQ, which states that there are too many unplayed episodes so new episodes won't download. For the podcasts in question, this is not the case, as all episodes have been listened to. What can be done to fix this problem?
My third issue is the fact that when I DO play a podcast on my iPod Touch (4th Gen), I don't use the app (can't stand it), then go to sync it with the computer, these episodes are shown as having already been played PRIOR to the actual syncing happening. So, when I go to do the ACTUAL sync, the play count is off. Right now, I have to manually reset the play count so that the episodes that I listened to on my iPod Touch only show one play in the library count, not two or in some cases, three. How can I fix this problem?
I have the most current version of iTunes and use Windows 7 64-bit.
    Thanks for ANY help!

  • Lots of exclamation points

I recently updated iTunes to 7.6. On my user name my iTunes works fine. My wifes iTunes shows all exclamation points. I figured out how to tell iTunes where each file was but it got monotonous. How do get her music back without finding each file one by one? Thanks for your time.

Her library ITL file got corrupted somehow.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732
If she doesn't have a backup, you could
    1) drag yours over into her user folder.
    2) Or she can create a new library by holding down the shift key when she starts iTUnes. Then File > Add Folder to Library and import all the music files that way.
Both methods will lose all her ratings, playcounts, etc.
