Upgrade lion using recovery disc

I have a older macbook pro running Lion to be upgraded to Mavericks. I could run the Mavericks install app from the store and do an upgrade.
Having backed up everything relevant/useful I would prefer to wipe the thing and start over.
I also have a recovery usb disc created using a newer MacBook Pro that came with Mavericks pre-installed. Can I use this recovery disc to install a fresh copy of Mavericks on this machine rather than going through the upgrade process?
I'd rather find out in advance if it is going to crash and burn rather than try it and find out the hard way.

Back up the system completely before you do anything. I use both Time Machine and bootable clones.
Unless you are having some sort of system problems in your current configuration, I strongly suggest you update from there rather than "wipe" the system.
I would not try to use whatever recovery disk you have to update. IMHO, that is a prescription for problems.

  • How to use recovery discs with Satelite Pro 300?

    Hello,
I have a Satelite Pro 300 with recovery disc, I would like to give this to my daughter I've copied all i need from it and would like to wipe it,
would be very greatful if you could give me step by step instuctions on how to use recovery disc.
    Thanks

To use recovery disc is very simply.
    Just do the follow:
    - Start your notebook and press F12
    - When the boot menu is shown put recovery media into optical disc drive
    - Choose CD/DVD drive on the list and press ENTER
    - Follow the menu on the screen
    - There is nothing you can choose or set. Just follow menu steps and confirm with OK
After recovery image installation leave notebook to complete installation.
Please note: recovery procedure will erase whole HDD and all saved data will be deleted. So, before you start installation back up all your important data.
    Thats all!

  • Can't download Lion from Recovery Disc

So this all started when i wanted to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I went to the app store and purchased the app and the download started. It took about 45 minutes and when it finished and I tried to install it failed because it said the download was corrupt. I tried three times and had the same result each time. I started troubleshoot and found somewhere where it said to try fixing disc permissions. I went into disc utils and tried to run the verify disc and it failed. I then tried running verify disc and that failed. So then I logged into Recovery Disc and ran Verify disc and it failed again. So I tried running Fix Disc and that failed. At that point I was not able to boot up to anything other than Recovery Disc. If it tried booting up it would start and run for about 20 seconds and then shutdown. At this point I decided to reformat my disc and re-install Lion. I wiped my disc and then used the re-install lion link to start that process. It would tell me it was downloading nessecary components and would start counting down from 1:45 hr it would hit 0 and the counter would start over. It does this about 3 time and then fails saying in could not download the components. I have tried it twice and had the same result. I am now on a differnt computer hoping to get some advice around what to do now. Anyone have any ideas around what I should try next. I am kind of stuck and getting really frustrated. This is the second time I have had major disc related issues. I never had these issues on my windows laptops.

Well in all fairness thinks like this happen to both Windows and Mac OS X.
I suspect your drive is failing. That is why the verify and repair fails and that the original download got corrupted and why now it restarts because it really can't save anything to that drive.
You could Restart from recovery and restart the download point it to an external drive and see if it completes and installs Lion on the external. If it does then good bet the internal drive is TOAST and needs to be replaced.

  • Not able to use Recovery disc set

I have the hp pavillion g6 with windows 8.1. I have Webroot security that i bought witth my hp. I am always trying to be carefull when downloading anything. Recently i accidentally downloaded Outfox which made itself my search engine. Webroot blocked it. I tried to find it to uninstall, but was unable to. My computer has had serious issues since. Pages wont load, startup takes forever or wont start So i shut down and try again. My fans are running like i have it in the oven. I created back up disks off my D: drive A while back before the problem. I then deleted the drive as suggested to free up space. whn i tried to use the discs to correct my issues, it says invalid media. What can I do?

From reading through your posts it appears that you made backup disks instead of a recovery disk set. They are definitely not the same thing.
I highly ecommend purchasing a set of recovery disks from HP or an HP partner.  Te recovery disk set will allow you to recover to the originally installed operating system. You will have to upgrade to Windows 8 and 8.1 again if that is your preferred OS.
You said that you deleted the partition ( I take it you meant the recovery partition) as recommended. I am quite certain that was not a recommendation by HP and it was very unlikely to have been a recommendation from  an Expert here in the forum.

  • HP 250 G2 unable to use recovery discs

So I purchased this laptop last year at Microcenter and since day 1 I noticed that the amber/white light that turns on when you connect the charger, it never turns white even after living the laptop charging the entire night, so far it doesnt bother me, but I I jus got a bigger hardrive and tried to install win 7 from the recovery discs that I had burned previously and it keeps telling me that the media is not usable in this unit. I even installed the originall hard drive in a enclosure and tried to boot windows so it would recover it from the usb but so far I havent been succesful with anything. I cant find the email address for HP so I can request the factory recovery discs. the laptop came pre intalled with win7 and a cd with windows 8.1 so you can upgrade it anytime but I need win 7 (main reasonwhy I purchased this laptop) any body has had any problems reinstalling windows 7? I would hate for my hard drive to crash and then find out that the recovery discs are useless

    Hello,
Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.
There is no email to contact HP support. However, there are options for phone support, chat support or ticket support.
    Here is some info:
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html
    or
    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html
If you would like to purchase recovery disck for your machine, you can contact the respective support team.
If your original HDD drive is working fine, you can insert it into the computer.
You can try with Microsoft Windows built-in recovery process (system image) and creating a system recovery disk (then boot from it with the new HDD and apply the image on this HDD)

    http://clonezilla.org/

If this fails [I doubt, it should work perfectly], you can then try to purchase the recovery disks from HP support.
Let me know if this works/helps

  • HP Windows 8 Recovery Failed (Used Recovery Discs)

Hi. I not sure where to begin.
    System Info-
    HP Pavilion g6t-2200 Notebook
    Windows 8 (64bit)
This is my sisters Computer. Her system was running slow so I was going to reinstall the OS using the Recovery Media I ordered for the system. Ive reinstalled Operating Systems for muliple computers since Windows 2000.
I got 3 Discs titled - System Recovery DVD Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products -
and 1 Application and Driver Recovery DVD.
I started the PC, Went into the UEFI (BIOS) And changed the Boot Options to CD-DVD Drive, Inserted Disc 1 and Restarted
The Recovery Manager Loaded and Started the Factory Image reset.
I inserted All 3 CDs when prompted during the "Reformatting the Windows Partition of the Hard Drive" , "Copying Files required to Restore the Hard Drive" and "Restoring Files to the Hard Drive"
I was then told that if I received any additional Recovery CDs to insert them now. I had that Application and Driver Recovery DVD, But did not insert it and chose to skip, due to the fact the CD did not come in the same Sleeve as the others.
The PC restarted and went through an Installation Process and several Restarts. After all of that, The PC restarted and told me that the Recovery Had FAILED. I was given the option to retry, or create a Dump File.
I am at a lost, Should I have used the disc when prompted? Any support would be nice =D
    This question was solved.

    Thank you for the Reply.
I did look at this article before doing this reset, But im still getting the error message.
Here is the dump file from this time
As for my 2nd time, I tried, Inserted the 4th disc when asked. Went through the process. I saw the Windows 8 Metro Screen for a brief second. But now im stuck with the error message again.
I cant remember how to hide long Dump Files, so sorry its so long.

  • Windows 8.1 notebook , recovery using recovery disc

my spouse after  spending less than 10 hours in 20 years of having computers in our home thought he had made recovery discs after I purchased his notebook for him.
It turned out he did not follow the instructions correctly and made only 1 recovery disc.
Now I have the recovery discs set but some say to press the F10 key and others say the F9 key, which is the correct way to do a recovery, no speakers are attached right now and it is plugged directly into the wall outlet, not even connected to the Internet.
I purchased it for him with windows 8 pre installed and 8.1 downloaded with the updates, he did a restore but is no longer working correctly, no apps or email,( windows live mail). When he turns it on updates download and then uninstall and then his notebook freezes up, it seems he cannot do a recovery from the partition on his system.
Would someone please tell me the correct way to do a recovery for my spouse so that I can fix his notebook .As I said he rarely uses any computer not even to check his email, he leaves that for me to do.
As for me I am more familiar with windows 7 and hate windows 8.

it is  F9 key. The HP instructions here should be helpful:

  • Repair using Recovery Disc for Satellite A100

Is it possible to do a *Repair* on my Toshiba Satellite A100-049 using the Recovery Disc that came with the laptop
    Regards

    Hi Dr Lamp,
It started about a week ago, when I think I had problems with the Malware /Virus "Fake Alert" where a meesage kept coming up saying I needed to repair or words to the effect. I then lost my desktop and my folders were empty in the start menu, and the screen was black.
I ran McaFee antivirus, Malwarebytes and Super AntiSpyware. I then ran Unhide and rKill. I got the desktop back with a couple of Word documents that would not open but the folders in the start menu where either ok files missing or empty.
I now keep getting redirected when searching but not always, also when I switch the laptop on Photshop opens up as though it is trying to open a file up,there is a message appears Photshop cannot open this kind of document.
The only program I have set to open on start up is McAfee.
I have tried a few system restores with the same result.
After system restore the laptop seems to start up ok, but the next time it is started Photoshop opens again.
I seem to be going round in circles, I really don't want to use the Restore option if at al possible.

I have tried 3 times with no luck.

    Hi:
If you can read your Windows 7 product key on the bottom of your notebook and you can live with whatever software is available on your notebook's support and driver page, you can make your own W7 installation DVD.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn as ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • Compaq Presario CQ57 - 205SO BOOTMGR Missing after using Recovery Discs

    Hi..
Try to do a recovery with the Recovery Discs From HP
When everything is complete and you do a reboot....BOOTMGR is missing
and you need to start over
    Self test is done OK
    Start up test OK
    Need some help her
    clueless

All HP systems came with a recovery partition on the HDD.  The only reason it shouldn't be present is if it was removed or if the HDD was replaced.  There might be something wrong with the disks themselves.  Have they worked previously or was this the first time they were being used?
You could also try using an official Windows 7 ISO using the product key found on the certificate of authenticity on the underside of the notebook.  Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit can be found here.  Make the DVD and proceed to install Windows using it.  You would boot from it in the same manner you did the recovery disks.  When it comes to activating Windows, you will need to use the phone activation method (it's automated) to use the OEM product key for that system.  See DavidPK's answer in this thread for more information.
Using this workaround will get Windows 7 installed.  Once that is done, you can install all of the drivers and desired software for your system from here.

  • Replacing hard drive & using recovery discs made by myself.

HPdv6 2119tx laptop. After replacing hard drive and loading recovery discs (that I made) successfuly, on reboot it messages something about cannot locate disk or load bootable disk (sorry, cannot remember exact wording but back to the start). Could this be because I replaced a 650gb drive with a 500gb drive.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
Normally you cannot use recovery disks on a smaller hard drive.
But you should be able to at least boot from the first recovery disk and see what happens.
To do that, you need to have the first disk in your dvd drive.
Restart the PC and at the beginning of the HP welcome screen, tap the ESC key and select the one time boot menu option.  From that, select the DVD drive and proceed.
If the ESC key method doesn't work, tap the F9 key instead.
It depends on the type of BIOS in your PC (normally dependent on its age) as to what key you need to tap.

  • Iconia W3 810 won't allow USB external disc drive to use recovery discs

Hello fellow Acerites and thanks in advance for your help! My Iconia tablet's Windows installation has gone sour and I have the recovery discs from Acer.  However, the tablet will not allow me to use my external USB disc drive to install them. Acer tells me the solution has been posted on this forum, but I cannot find it. Help please?

You need external power for the drive, either direct power to the drive or by connecting to a powered USB hub. The drive will show up without it, but there won't be enough juice to run the motor.

  • M65-S9092 Problem Using Recovery Disc

When I used the Toshiba recovery discs 1 and 2 the screen has lines with hash marks and the recovery screen too. Then after the install the computer starts up and the windows logo screen has lines with hash marks too. Then the screen goes black with the cursor frozen on the screen. I tried F-8 on startup and tried to go into safe mode but get an error message that setup was not installed properly and do try set up again. I tried to reinstall windows several times and it always goes to the black screen after I'm done. The lines with hash marks won't go away either. Can anyone help me find out what is wrong?

Your internal temps are fine.  Most computers are designed to withstand higher than 100 C, so you don't have much to worry about.
Though I am an HP employee, I am not here as a representative for them. I am here of my own accord to help those requesting it.
Please demonstrate any appreciation for help with a kudos!

  • Windows 8 Recovery Manager using recovery discs

Having had a fair few problems with my Pavilion desktop since I bought it in February 2013, about 10 days ago, it completely crashed (not sure if this is the correct terminology!) and I used Recovery Manager to create three back-up (again, correct terminology?) discs. When I use these to recover the programs, it stops part-way through to say that I need to reinsert disc 2.  I do this and then, the disc is rejected.  I then end up clicking on 'cancel' which ends the recovery process.  I would really appreciate some help with this problem! Many thanks Cate

I have found my solution, going through the install.wim file in the recovery partition, in the Preload folder, there are
folders numbered 1 to 4,  folder number 4 has a folder  called SWsetup, in this folder is a folder called RMFQ, this IS HP's Recovery Manager install media, i now have it installed and running the recovery!!
