Upgrade lion x (desktop) to server

Hi,
Question from a bit of a newbie here...
I have recently purchased a Mac Mini with Lion X. I also have a couple of MBPs. I'd like to have the Mac Mini act as the place where all the Time Machine backups go (I have a 1 TB external disk hooked up to the Mac Mini). Apparently, I must have Lion x *Server* running on the Mac Mini for it to become available as a Time Machine destination for the MBPs.
How can I upgrade my Mac Mini from Lion X to Lion X Server?
Thanks,
Frank

You don't need Server if that is all you want to do.
Just share your backup drive from the mini.  Mount it on the MBP's, then assign the mounted drive as the backup disk in each MBP's Time Machine configuration.  You can then unmount the remote disk from the MBPs.  When TM runs, it will mount the remote disk and do the backup.
Don't buy into Server unless you want more of the Server functionality (Directory Services, DNS, mail server etc.).  But, if you do decide to get server, connect to the App Store from the mini with the AppleID that you used to purchase Lion (client) and buy Server.  Make sure that you save a copy of the Server install app BEFORE you install it.  Just like Lion client, the install app is deleted during the install.  That might save you another 4GB download if you ever decide to re-install in the future.

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, the computer's also incompatible with Mountain Lion and Mavericks; if desired, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

  • Can I upgrade to os x lion from os x server

I've got a Mac Mini Server, and I'd really like to convert to the standard version of Lion when it gets released.  Will I be able to upgrade directly, or will I need to reformat, install Snow Leopard, and then upgrade to Lion?

I upgraded from a snow leopard server on mac-mini to lion server from AppStore  and now it does not work anymore. MySQL has disappeared, disappeared the configurations of my mail virtual servers the
Macports is gone, the web server no longer work.
my advice is do not update.

  • Using OS X Lion as a Business Server for a Windows & Mac Enviroment

Hi there, I am debating on using OS X Lion (on a Mac Mini) as a server for a small business.  I have some lingering questions that I need help with.
If I am using OS X Lion as the mail server,
Does it provide any kind of online/web access (similar to OWA)?
Does it work with Mac Outlook 2011?
Will it work with Windows Outlook?
Will the messenger work with a Window's machine at all?  (i.e., remote employee on a Windows laptop.)
If I am using OS X Lion as a file server,
Can I restrict access to certain folders?
Is there a way to allow clients access to certain folders (similar to SharePoint)?
    Is there any FTP capabilities?
How secure is OS X Lion?  I work in a very contentious / data sensitive field.  The information we will have is highly confidential and highly sought after.
In the end, I am looking for a cost effective solution for a small group of consultants that deal with high profile matters, need to quickly and easily communicate and collaborate from both Windows laptops and MacBook Pros (90% remotely).
    Thanks for the help!

    And this is my problem.
    In windows terms:
I want to assign a drive letter to a network drive, and have that be a machine-wide assignment, that is activated during bootup, and is visible to all users and services.
I can do that for an arbitrary partition that is physically attached to the machine.
I cannot seem to do that for any partition that is mounted over the network.
    The problems are:
    1. It doesn't map for every user,
    2. It doesn't map for services that run when a user isn't logged in
    3. It generates annoying inconsistencies in what programs see what.
Is there really no way for an XP box to use a file server? Even a microsoft file server? (if there is, how do I make my mac os with samba look like a real microsoft file server).
Annoying tidbit: The "conncet at login" information is stored in the user profile; if you rely on that, then the user profile cannot be stored with the rest of the user's personal files. If it weren't for that, I could probably live with a work around.
(2 to 1 someone will say "Xp Professional can do that trivially" and tell me to upgrade. I thought XP home was supposed to support home and small office networking, and I thought that included a single shared file server.)

    Thanks for that information!
I'm sure I will be calling AppleCare, but the problem is, they charge for the phone calls don't they? Because I don't have money to be spending to be on the phone with a support service.
In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!

  • Lion on a mini server

I went to the Apple store and was told that i could load lion with out the server software on my mini server with no problem. The problem is the download at the app store wont let me download the app with out the server software. I bought the server for the hard drive space not to use as a server. Any one know how to do this with out buying the server software?

Personally I'd never buy a used Mac without the original Install DVD set that it shipped with, or at the least a working Retail Upgrade Disc.
Contact the seller and check to see if they have the Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard Install/Restore DVDs that came with that Late 2009 Server.

If not, then unfortunately you will have to either try a later Retial Snow Leopard version or contact Apple Support and order a replacement Install DVD set for that system.

  • Upgrade from Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 to Snow Leopoard

I need to know how to Upgrade from Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 to Snow Leopoard. I just need to get the 29.00 Snow Leopard? no the 499$. just one server and no clients to him.
    thanks

You cannot use the standard desktop Snow Leopard upgrade on a machine running any flavor of OS X Server. There is a lot of 'under-the-hood' functionality that would not take well to attempting this and could render you with a dead Mac until you reinstall the original OS.
If you wish to keep the Server functionality, the Snow Leopard Server upgrade ($499) is the only option.
If you wish to ditch the Server functionality and use the standard desktop version, you would need a copy of the desktop version of OS X 10.5 Leopard and the ($29) Snow Leopard upgrade. Apple does sell both 10.5 and the Snow Leopard upgrade in a combo bundle.

  • Is it ok to just upgrade the BIP Desktop to 11.1.1.7 and use BIP11.1.1.5

    Hi Experts
Is it ok to just upgrade the BIP Desktop to 11.1.1.7 and use BIP11.1.1.5
    Regards

    Why would you do that?
The desktop libraries for the RTF template may get out of synch with the server libraries.
So when you develop an RTF template you may use the latest functions and bug fixes
as you will be using the libraries for 11.1.1.7. whereas in the server your libraries will
    be older.
    thanks

  • My iTunes library is missing since upgrade Lion 7.2.  I have it all backed up so that's not the issue. How can I reinstall it with all my hundreds of playlists intact or do I have to recreate each one upon reinstalling the backup copy? Thank you for help

Almost my iTunes library is missing since upgrade Lion 7.2. (the last 2.5 weeks worth of added music has transferred post-upgrade, none of whcih was bought from iTunes)
I have it all backed up so that's not the issue. How can I reinstall it with all my hundreds of playlists intact or do I have to recreate each playlist upon reinstalling the backup copy? This would save a HUGE amount of time and efforts. Thank you for your help!

    hi Limnos,
I do not mean the entire ITunes folder but, rather, the contents of the ITunes folder prior to September 29th.  (90% of the media is missing, along with all playlists)  The media that remains says it was added on 9/29 although I know most of it was added many months or even years earlier. There are no playlists listed at all, before or after 9/29.  (I know for certain that I added non-iTunes purchased songs on 10/6 although I had not created playlists for them)
I have my iTunes folder backed up on both an external drive as well as Time Machine.
I run iTunes off of an ITunes folder on my computer rather than from the external, if that's what you mean about how I have it set up.
Is it OK to drag the entire iTunes folder from the external drive onto my laptop's drive and see if that fixes it?
    Thank you for your help!

In that case, there may be a problem with your Finder preferences or window settings.
Try removing these files, then restarting:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Desktop/.DS_Store
Let me know if you're not sure how to do that.

  • I upgraded Lion recently to 10.7.3. Since that time I am having trouble with my wireless connection. All other devices are fine, but I keep losing the connection since the upgrade.

Recently I upgraded Lion to 10.7.3. Since that time I have been having a lot of trouble with my internet connection. I keep losing the connect and have to go to diagnostics and turn it back on. Is anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks, Pat

I'm afraid there are numerous threads on here discussing this problem. I posted in this one earlier that has a couple of suggestions, but the real solution will hopefully be provided in an update from Apple:

  • Virtual machine of Lion OSx 10.7 server on my MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7?

I'd like to create a better disaster recovery plan.  My thought was to create a virtual machine of Lion OSx 10.7 server on my MacBook Pro running 10.7.  Is that even possible?

Disasters for you primary tends to take down the disk.  That would kill your VM 10.7 Server fail-over.
Yes, you can VM "server", but I advise using CarbonCopyClone to keep a copy of the main disk but on an external drive, two separate external drives if you can afford it.  CCC will clone the Recovery Partition, and the odds of all three drives failing at the same time are very low.  Just keep the clones current by backing up at least once a week, if not once a day.  You can rotate one of the clones to a freind's house for better protection.
