Upgrade MacBook 2,1 to Snow Leopard issues

hello folks
over the holidays i took on the task of upgrading my 91-year-old fearless mom's aging MacBook (running Tiger OS X 10.4.11) so that she can use FaceTime to chat with her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. since Snow Leopard is the farthest she can go without hacking (though Lion seems possible) i ordered a Snow Leopard Install DVD from Apple and 4 gig of RAM and an SSD drive from Other World Computing. the SSD was a 120 GB OWC Mercury Electra 3g SATA II - recommended by OWC for this particular MacBook model. i ordered their upgrade bundle, which came with an external USB enclosure for the old drive. installation of the memory and HD was a snap. to cover any possible gotchas i also ran a clone of her old HD using SuperDuper prior to doing the HD upgrade. once everything was in place i booted up to the clone and formatted and restored her data to the SSD. booted to the internal SSD and had a very peppy MacBook. phase two is where things got very strange: when i booted to the OS X 10.6.3 Install DVD and started the process of installing Snow Leopard i found that the SSD drive was not being found by Disk Utility - i could see the CD drive and my external HD with her clone, but no SSD. since there is no way to quit the installer (that i could find) i forced a shutdown and did some research. the SSD is formatted as GUID and extended (journalled), S.M.A.R.T status ok. i'm leery of pulling the SSD out and attempting to install SL on an external drive, due to the age of the machine and my own thumb-fingeredness. any suggestions would be welcomed. i have to head back home tomorrow, so likely i won't be able to finish this till our next visit, but i'd love to figure this out.
cheers
bruce

If it was a Core Duo this could be the problem:
http://store.apple.com/us/question/answers/product/MC573Z/A/i-have-a-macbook-2-g hz-intel-core-2-duo-running-104-if-i-buy…
". Be careful when you upgrade from 10.4. The 10.4 hard drive is probably formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Snow Leopard requires the hard drive to be formatted as a GUID. A Mac OS Extended drive will have to be wiped/reformatted/partitioned to get to GUID."

  • Mavericks upgrade : Macbook (early 2009) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8)

    Hello,
I have a Macbook (early 2009) running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and want to upgrade to Mavericks.
I have upgraded to 4GB RAM and replaced the HD for an SSD. It works perfectly.
Now the issue comes with Mavericks upgrade.
The App Store offers me to upgrade to Mavericks but when I click on the Upgrade button, a message prompts it can not install Mavericks on this machine.
I am confused. Any idea on what I should check ?

    Toffe13,
Are you very sure of the exact mode (year etc), just saying as the requirements are:
"MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)"
    If so...
Then have you tried reinstalling the 10.6.8 updates (combo 1.1) - http://support.apple.com/downloads/#10.6.8
    Also...
I assume you've ran a full sweep of Disk Utility to clear any permissions issues etc. (rarely helps, but still)
Maybe provide a little more info on what you've tried thus far, I.E. is this a fresh install from your DVD's etc. or a migration from HDD to SSD etc.
    Thanks

  • Best way to upgrade MacBook from Tiger to Snow Leopard? I only have 1 GB RAM

I'm currently running the latest version of Tiger (10.4.11) on my Intel MacBook with 1 GB RAM, and I want to
upgrade to a later version of OS X.  I understand that Mountain Lion requires 2 GB RAM, so I'm thinking that
I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6).  What's the best way to go about this -- where do I get the upgrade, etc.,
and what do I need to watch out for in terms of compatibility with existing applications such as Microsoft Office?
    Thanks

Restore your bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup of your previous 10.6.x installation.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How can i format my macbook 10.5.8 to snow leopord i am doing first time  format how its process and do i need to formet or upgrade and i have a snow leopard DVD????

how can i format my macbook 10.5.8 to snow leopord i am doing first time  format how its process and do i need to formet or upgrade and i have a snow leopard DVD???

First, I'd advise you to make a backup. Time Machine is fine, but I recommend making a bootable backup with Carbon Copy Cloner if possible.
Then, insert the Snow Leopard DVD (it's a retail version, right? Not a grey disk meant for another machine?) and run the installer on the disk. Should be automatic from that point in. You don't need to reformat your drive.

  • I'm thinking of upgrading from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this? What are the implications / consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware?

I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. I know, I'm years behind, but it has become a necessity. My Mac is becoming slow and is incompatible with many softwares and websites. Does anyone know of any problems associated with this upgrade? What are the implications and/or consequences of installing Yosemite? Does it effect functionality of v10.6.8 software or hardware? Are there any precautions I should take before the installation? I have read some posts about Macs slowing right down after installing Yosemite. Any insights and information (in layman's terms please!) would be very useful. Thanks.

Huge thanks for your response Michel. I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. I have done as you suggested, the details are pasted below. Clearly there are some applications I need to remove and no doubt my HD could do with a 'spring clean'. My Mac 'Safe Booted' when I turned it on this morning.
I use many different softwares, some web-based. The decision to upgrade to OSX Yosemite is because I was unable to attend a Webinar this week using GoToMeeting downloadable software. GoToMeeting have upgraded their system and my OS is no longer supported. Other websites like VImeo no longer support my version of Safari. I tend to use Chrome if Safari isn't compatible.
    Problem description:
I'm thinking of upgrading from v10.6.8 Snow Leopard to OS X Yosemite. However I have noticed that my MacBook Pro becoming ‘slow’ over the last 3 weeks and therefore might have some issues that need to be resolved before I even consider installing OSX Yosemite. Over the last week my Mac has Safe Booted on three occasions, so clearly there’s a ‘glitch’ occurring.

I have a Macbook pro 2009 with Snow Leopard.  Which system can I install without running into complicated problems which I will not be able to solve by myself- a person with limited problem solving abilities. (Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite?)

It will make it easier to help you w/ your problem to know the  size and RAM installed.
"Yesterday I couldn't update the maps on my Garmin because it said the OS I had wouldn't work"
What OS will your Garmin work with? Funny there was someone else that did that and upgraded to Yosemite and regretted it.
I'd say Lion if your Garmin is compatible.
Both Lion and Mountain Lion are downloadable from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
The OSs will get more resource hungry the higher you go.

I have a macbook 10.6.8 snow leopard, do i have to purchase os x lion for icloud to work on my devices?

“Apple may be working on a Mac OS X10.6.9 update to extend iCloud to Snow Leopard, an error message reveals,” MacNN reports.
“After upgrading a MobileMe account to iCloud, one developer says he encountered a unique error message in Tiger’s .Mac preferences pane,” MacNN reports. “‘You will no longer be able to sync with this machine because you’ve upgraded to iCloud,’ it begins. ‘iCloud requires running Mac OS X Snow Leopard v10.6.9 or later for Contacts, Calendars, and Bookmarks.’”

  • Can an older MacBook with OS X Snow Leopard run Adobe Creative Cloud programs?

I bought my MacBook around 2008 and I'm upgrading the operating system to Snow Leopard. (I know, this MacBook is in the Ice Ages.) I am wondering if I'll be able to use Adobe Creative Cloud's suite of programs on this older MacBook and operating system. I mainly use Premiere Pro for video editing. Sometimes Audition and sometimes Lightroom/Photoshop.

If your MacBook has got an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, you can upgrade. To check which processor your MacBook has got, open  > About this Mac.
I recommend you to have at least 4 GB of RAM to upgrade to Lion. You can buy more memory at OWC or Crucial. Make a backup of your files with Time Machine before upgrading and check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard and final cut express 4 will not launch but my final cut express HD 3.0 version comes up. I reinstall my final cut express 4 upgrade disc and it still will not launch.
Where do I go from here?

You installed from the discs, right?
What happens when you try to launch? What are you doing to launch and what happens you do it? Can't see you computer from here. If you probably need to contact Apple with an installation issue on a new computer.

  • Can I Upgrade Directly From Tiger To Snow Leopard?

I'm operating OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger) on a pre-2008 Macbook with an Intel processor. I'd like to upgrade to Snow Leopard.
After doing a little research, I didn't see anything on the Snow Leopard packaging or on the Apple website which clearly states this, but can I upgrade directly to Snow Leopard? The Apple Store says Tiger users must buy the Mac Box Set (which includes iLife '09 and iWork '09). I really don't want to since I don't plan to use the features of iWork and can purchase iLife '09 separately.
Basically, my question is, can I upgrade to Snow Leopard (using a Snow Leopard upgrade @ $29) and, if so, will my prior version of iLife still function or will I be forced to upgrade to iLife '09. I'd rather pay $95 for things I know I would use, compared to $170 for extra, unused software.

    "Snow Leopard Upgrade Requirements
Snow Leopard requires an Intel-based Mac.
Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard users, buy the upgrade.
Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger users, buy the Mac Box Set."
I don't think there is any technical limitation to installing a clean 10.6 "upgrade" on a compatible machine, running either 10.4 or 10.5, however, the 10.6 license, that buyers must agree with, relies on the "honor system" for compliance.
I am about to upgrade my black MacBook to 10.6 with the Box Set, my Intel MacBook shipped with 10.4, one of the later models not long before 10.5 came out, and as I skipped 10.5, the 10.6 Box Set seems to be the only option, even though I am not interested in iWork so much.

  • What happens when I upgrade to mountain lion from snow leopard?

I currently have 2 partitions. my mac side and my windows 7 home side.
If i upgrade to mountain lion from snow leopard will i be expected to reinstall bootcamp and windows7 home along with all my other windows programs?
What happens to the partitions? do they stay the same or does the upgrade pretty much do a factory restore and make me start from square one again?
I have a time capsule. but do not really know how to work it like its supposed to. i just really use it to store data that i do not need on my partitions at the current times.

I do not have any knowledge about boorcamp but on my old MacBook with snowleapard,
I was not able to upgrade to Mountain Lion Because of my hardware I think.
    And about tha bootcamp partition:
there shouldn't be any problem with upgrading "if even possible" because the Mac partition
    can't edit the Windows partition.
I hope this helps you, but I would do some more research befor upgrading instead of completely trusting on my advise.

  • Time Machine after upgrade to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard

    Hi,
I upgraded my Macbook pro to Mountain Lion yesterday from Snow Leopard. I just did the upgrade over the top of snow leopard so all of my apps and documents are exactly as they were (right down to the wallpaper)
However, there is a problem with time machine.
Time Machine no longer automatically backups to the drive I had been using for my snow leopard backups (I assume this is because I have changed operating systems).
How can i continue to use this drive for time machine?
Can I just select it again and will it retain my existing snow leopard backups?
Or do I need to format it?
    Cheers guys.

Thank you, so that will retain my existing snow leopard backups and just start making new mountain lion backups? (There is more than 1TB of available space on the drive still)
