Upgrade: MacPro 1,1 tp 4,1 & OSX 10.6.8 to 10.7.5. to 10.8

Am upgrading from a MacPro 1,1 to a MacPro 4,1.12GB with a pair of SSDs (1 Boot and 1 Home), and with a 1TB backup HHD, partitioned at 500GB/500GB, using CCCloner.
Will be running four 23" CinemaHD displays, via a Radeo 5770 with active adapters and NVIDIA 120 GT.
Existing total System & Docs is less than 100GB
I am asking for advice as to correct sequence of events/task on how to do this.
1,1 is licensed and running Lion 10.7.5,
1,1 has the account with App Store and a 10.7.5 previously purchased download still available to me on that computer.
1,1 is the 'authorized' computer in iTunes
4,1 is running licensed (by OWC reseller to me) with SL 10.6.8
Objective: Run the 4,1 with ML 10.8, and get all my 'stuff' to the 4,1.
1,1 is internet connected, and is in use everyday, a lot.
4,1 is NOT, yet.
So, when the 4,1 becomes my internet CPU, I need to do it swiftly, and overnight, with all my addresses, archives, and filters intact.
I have a 32GB thumb drive.
Will be doing a clean install all CD-based apps (OfficeMac2011, McDraft, DragonDrop, etc., to the 4,1.( after OSX upgrade...yes?)
Will be attempting to build a very 'lean' new system, and get rid of 6-7 years accumulation of many misc, rarely used, and useless apps.
Will be dragging all documents and 'S/W version only' small apps from the 1,1 to the 4,1 via FW400 to FW800, in  "Target disk" mode, but am a bit 'fuzzy' on how best way to move my iTunes music files.
Have nothing in the iCloud.
I'm figuring that I will need to buy OSX ML10.8 upgrade from Apple @ $19.99...yes?
How is best way to get the OSX ML10.8 on the 4,1,  and get App Store account moved to 4,1, and the 4.1 be the  iTunes 'authorized' computer?
Not sure what is the correct, least hassle, sequence, in which to do all this. Don't want to get to some stage that could be a dead end with no way to resolve.
I do NOT intend migrate go to Yosemite, at this time...will do so later, after they clean it up a bit, in further revisions.
Would go directly to Mavericks, if I could, but I understand that is not possible anymore...correct?
I am in no hurry to make transition to new 4,1, and can take it slowly, safely, and as simply as possible, even if it takes a week.
Thanks very much,
John in Palm Harbor.

You can upgrade to 10.8 directly from 10.6. To get 10.8 you can purchase it here:   Mountain Lion
Use the combo update, if required, to get to 10.8.5      10.8.5 Combo Update
Do any other software updates required.
Mavericks is no longer available as you posted.
You can have more than one computer authorized in iTunes, just use the same Apple ID. You can have more than one computer use the AppStore, just use the same Apple ID.
In the Target Disk Mode, just copy your iTunes library from one computer to the other.
I would get the newer Mac Pro updated to 10.8, then use the Target Disk Mode to copy the desired data over, and then do the clean installation of Office 2011 and other programs.

  • Upgrade MacPro Tower from OSX Lion to OSX Lion SERVER (Pros/Cons)

I recently upgraded both of my Mac's to OSX 10.7 lion
    First the stats on both my macs;
    #1
    12 Core MacPro Tower
x2 Stock 2.66 GHz Westmere Processors
    12 GB Mem
120 GB SSD intel boot drive
    x3, 2TB Samsung HD's in the other 3 slots
Running single user Mac OSX 10.7 lion, and one of thw Samsungs has a 500GB Windows 7 partition
    #2
    15" 2011 Macbook Pro
    i5 Intel
    8GB Memory
    120 GB SSD
Running single user Mac OSX 10.7 lion
The home network it run by a 500GB Time Capsule (used to back up the laptops preferences only really, the tower has it's own 4 bay RAID unit that I use to back it up), the home network also supports two apple TV's which stream iTunes media from the tower. I of course use my laptop for when I am out in the field and away from home, whatever downloads or files I've created on it are transfered to the Tower and then deleted from the laptop for the most part.  Recently my grilfriend has moved in and wants to use the tower in the similar fashion that I do as she also has a mac (which I mostly maintain), and I want to create a system that makes it easier to share and transfer files remotely on our home network, which finally brings me to my question.  Would upgrading my tower to 10.7 Lion server edition allow for a more versatile set-up like this?  Would I still be able to use it as a stand alone desktop with all of the apps it has insalled in it?  Would it affect my media (iTunes) library and streaming to appleTV/airtunes or home sharing? What are the pros and cons of switching from a single user OS to the server OS?
Thank you in advanve for being patient with me, I'm relatively new to trying to be more than just an average computer user,
    -Adam

I was just in a conversation on another list going on and on about syncing, calendar sharing, hassles with Mail, etc. I was explaining that today, even though there might only be one or two computer users on a LAN, each of those users may have several devices, so we're back to client/server architecture. But I didn't realize Lion Server was only $49 piddling bucks!
I'd do yerselft a favor and get it; I'm thinking of it. I've probably paid more over time for various applications and services that do what it does outta the box. Like calendar and contact sharing, email serving, etc. It does webdav too, which makes file sharing easier on mobile devices.
Otherwise it acts like any old Mac; I can't imagine her use would strain any of the resources you have. Much of the software the server uses is part of the regular OS anyway. Check out the features it has; it looks pretty good.
And give us a review if you get it.

  • How to upgrade MacPro OS 10.6.8 to 10.8?

How to upgrade MacPro OS 10.6.8 to 10.8?

As long as your machine meets the system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
You should be able to go to the App Store (since you're running 10.6.8), buy Mountain Lion, and download/install it.
FWIW: You probably have more than 2 GB RAM - 4 GB should be considered a more realistic minimum.

As long as you don't need all the bells and whistles of the iTunes Store such as Ping, and don't need to sync an iOS device running iOS 4.x, then iTunes 9.2.1 should work for you. It should be available via Software Update, but if not, you can still get it here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1056
but it would be best to upgrade your Mac to Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6, since it's probable that eventually the iTunes Store will no longer support iTunes 9.x.
    Regards.
P.S. Mac OS X 10.4 was discontinued three and a half years ago, so yes, it's getting rather long in the tooth. Cheers.

There is no upgrade to iPhoto with OS X 10.10.3 - here was an update to version 9.6.1 a few months ago and Photo 1.0 was added with 10.10.3 - what software and which version are you having trouble with - iPhoto or Photos?

    Hi all,
Have upgraded to from OSX 10.3.9 to OSX 10.4 to allow me to upgrade FCP from 4.5 to 5.1 in order to add HDV support.
First use after upgrading and FCP is no longer recognising DV camera through Firewire. Subsequently upgraded to OSX 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.4 but still have the same problem.
Can control the camera from log and capture, but preview disabled and capturing insists that no device is selected. Capture presets state that Video Device DV Video is missing
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the problem?

  • Upgrading MacPro and nVIDIA CUDA cards.

I'm sure that I am not the only one who was taken back by the underwhelming MacPro "upgrade" yesterday. I have been holding out well over a year for an updated to my current MacPro 1,1, and I'm not sure I can wait much longer...
So, I'm trying to figure out the best solution that will hold me over. I am a Premiere Pro and After Effects power user, and have been excited about the CUDA capabilities and the amazing performance boost it will give. I figured when I upgraded, I would make sure I have a card in the machine that supports that.
I recently visited both "tech-spec" pages for Premiere and After Effects and they still list the same 4 nVidia GPUs supported on the mac. In fact, it looks like when AE and PP CS6 were released, they just changed the header. This hasn't changed in a long while.
    GeForce GTX 285
    Quadro CX
    Quadro FX 4800
    Quadro 4000
    So here lies the frustration.
If I run out and get either a refurb of the 2010 MacPros, or one of the "new" MacPro towers running the ATI cards, I will still have to go out and replaced the video cards with one of the listed above. To make matters worse, the one reasonably priced card (GTX 285) is almost impossible to find. Not the least of which, it's already several years old.
I'm looking for any suggestions people might have, or workarounds, solutions...etc. I've considered picking up one of new Quad-Core's and using the price difference to kick up the video card. I guess I can sell the OEM one on eBay.
Unless someone can convince me that an i7 MacBookPro, and it's new nVideo card will do what I want to do, I'm not sure what other choices I have.
At this point anything will be a ridiculous upgrade from what I currently have. But for someone who wants to get a few years out of this investment, I'd hate to start off at a disadvantage.
I welcome all your thoughts and thank you in advance.
    Best
    Stephen

I guess I've been just gun-shy about throwing $500 down on a card and having some immediately hack it. But, I completely hear what you are saying, there are so many other options in terms of cards if you go that route. It's possible I might have to seriously consider this.
The EVGA 2.5G GTX570 is $329 at NewEgg at this point.  It's the most powerful card we can currently run in our Mac Pros without adding an extra power supply.  The GTX580 will also work, but it has a 6-pin and 8-pin power requirement, something the existing Mac Pro can't quite deal with.  The GTX680 has 2 6-pin ins, but the nVidia driver hasn't been updated to support it yet.
I'm still blown away that Apple didn't even put a newer video card in the latest towers. But, that's what I've come to expect from my love/hate relationship with them.
They're not really in position to do much more in the way of hardware validation for the existing Pros, so don't expect to see any new video cards added.  Like... ever.  The current rumor is that the Pros won't be re-done until sometime next year, likely when the Ivy Bridge Xeons are available.  Until then, folks are going to have to make do with what little Apple is providing, and perhaps perform their own mods like I did.

  • Upgrading a mac of a certain age, OSX 10.5.8

Sometimes I hate to ask these things because when it comes to computers I am a big idiot, so I will just get that out of the way in case anybody wants to point it out. so here is the question:
I have an older Mac with OSX 10.5.8. and I want to upgrade, I think what i need is snow leopard but it says the requirement is OS X 10.6, can anyone enlighten me?   thx

It means installing the maximum amount of RAM supported by your model. That could be anywhere from 6 GBs to 8 GBs depending on what model you actually have. To determine that open System Profiler/Information in your Utilities folder. In the ensuing display look for your Model Identifier. It will consist of two integers separated by a comma. Post that so we can determine what you have.
OS upgrades for you will be a matter of how much RAM you have installed and what bells and whistles you want. Snow Leopard (10.6.x) and Lion (10.7.x) are your alternatives, although were you to upgrade to the latter you would first need to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard cost is $29.00 at any Apple retailer or the Online Store. Lion, $30.00, is only available for purchase and download from the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store is only accessible once you install 10.6.6 or later.

  • Upgrading from lion 10.7.5 to osx maverick

Can I upgrade directly from lion 10.7.5 to osx maverick

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space

  • Upgrading MacPro with MacBook Pro Applications DVD?

Can I use the Applications DVD that came with my MacBook Pro 13-inch to upgrade the MacPro iLife (from version 2008 to 2009)?
I ordered iLife 2009 for the MacPro together with the MacBook Pro. However, Apple shipped iLife the slow way (DHL) and it will not arrive before the weekend.
    Thanks for your reply
    Olaf

It probably won't work; most of those installers detect the model of Mac and won't install on a different model. But you can try it; if it fails, then you'll have to wait for the retail copy of iLife to arrive.
Note that only iLife would be legal to install on the Mac Pro, and that only because you've ordered a legal copy for it (this just for anyone else reading). Caveat: it's technically bending the terms of the license for the MBP installer, but I don't think Apple would complain, though I don't work for Apple and cannot speak for them.

  • Upgrading to lion message Hard drive needs osx Journel extended to install

Upgrading from 10.6 to lion i get the message the hard drive needs to be installed on a "osx journel (extended)" hard disk. In disk utility it is in the correct format Any idea's ?

    Are you sure it's journalled?
Preferably Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or, if necessary, Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled).
If the "Journaled" is missing, just select the partition (indented, under the main line for the drive), and click the Enable Journaling icon in the toolbar (or select File > Enable Journaling in the menubar).

My question is simple. I am debating upgrading my existing desktop to osx server. Is it possible to do this and not loose any software and or user accounts? If it is not possible I could go down the route of darwin.

You've posted in the wrong forum. Post your question here: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96.
Unless your computer will be used in a fairly large network as the main server there's little point in installing OS X Server and incurring the additional costs.

    Dear Yotebeth
Your video card may be overheating when pushed hard, due to it being clogged with dust and fluff. Open the side panel on your Mac and shine a light into the white plastic shroud on the video card in which the GPU heatsink lives. If you can't see vertical metal fins it is blocked with fluff. Gentle stroking with a wooden toothpick should get out the mattress of fluff which has accumulated. This may solve your problem and make your Mac a lot quieter, as the GPU fan isn't running flat out. A more complete solution is to pull the card out (use anti-static precautions) and blow it through with an air gun (well away from your mac). The dust that comes out of it is quiet astonishing. The X1900 ***** up more dust than most vacuum cleaners. Some folk recommend cleaning it every four months. Hope this helps. BB
