Upgrade Memory on 2009 4 core Mac Pro - Max? Non-ECC?

I've been doing research on what I can do to upgrade my RAM on my Mac Pro and I think I did something I wasn't supposed to do a while back.
During my last upgrade adventure, I apparently purchased and installed a 2GB stick of Non-ECC (PC3-8500 1066MHz) RAM to fill the one empty slot. The computer shipped with 3 bars of 1GB ECC memory.
Now, as I scan the web for info on what kind of memory I can get away with, everything I'm seeing says that you should not mix ECC and Non-ECC. But I've been running both for about a year now.
So my questions:
1. Should/can I use Non-ECC Memory?
2. If so, should I not be mixing?
3. What is the Max amount of memory my Mac Pro can handle? I'm seeing some info that says 4x2GB, and I'm seeing other info that says 4x4GB. Which is correct?

When you get a lot of memory in a computer, it is more likely so suffer an occasional memory error. This can cause serious problems that can lie hidden for months. It can take a very long time to isolate the problem and find the bad component and remove it, and the damage may have propagated throughout the files on your Hard drive.
Use System Profiler \[About this Mac > More Info] and click the "Memory" category. You will see an indication of whether each DIMM is ECC, and also a main status of "ECC ON" or "ECC OFF".
You are very lucky to own a Mac that has additional Hardware to support Error Correcting Code ECC Memory. IF ECC is active, you get enormous peace-of-mind. Any single-bit errors will be corrected, and double bit errors will stop your Mac immediately -- long before the problem can contaminate anything else.
I suggest you use only ECC memories, and make certain ECC is always ON.
Apple does not currently sell 4GB DIMMs, but others do, as noted above. Most sellers of 4GB DIMMs also warn you that you cannot mix 4GB DIMMs with 1GB or 2GB DIMMs.

I am planning to upgrade the memory in my new 8 core Mac Pro, I use it for graphics and video editing (FCS2), I am wondering what would be the advantages and differences between getting the 8GB upgrade in 2-pair of 4GB module or 4-pair of 2GB module, I know the price for the first choice is almost double the second.

OK, so according to the http://www.barefeats.com/harper3.html Memory Tests, all slots filled means the fastest speed. So here's my question:
I'm about to buy a 2,8GHz MacPro with 2GB RAM, and I want to upgrade to 8GB. I was considering buy an 8GB Kit from Crucial (629.99$), and either leave the original 2GB and add the 8GB to the free slots, or just take the original out and leave only the 8GB modules. And this would be my question before reading the Memory Tests article.
So I went back to Crucial's online store and did some math, to see how much it would cost me to fill the remainder slots (6, counting off the 2 used by the original RAM) with 1GB modules, instead of my previous idea of 8GB (2x4GB). So, a 2GB Kit (2x1GB) cost 127.99$, multiplied by 3, which is what I would need to achieve a total of 6GB, to add to the original 2GB, will cost 383.97$.
That's 246$ less than the 8GB Kit! And according to the Memory Tests, even faster.
Isn't this too good to be true? What's your word?

Installed Memory not showing up in a late 2009 Dual Core Mac Pro

I have a late 2009 Dual Core Mac Pro.
I restarted the my computer today, an a utility popped up saying something about I need to re-arrange the memory in my mac because it was not optimized.
I thought this was weird because all the slots are filled with 2 gigs chips for a total of 16 gigs.
When I checked about this Mac it said I only had 12 gigs of memory in my system.
I went to open up the case, and there are to red light glowing for slots 7 and 8 on the motherboard, and any memory chips I put in those slots do not show up.
Can anyone tell me what is going on and how to fix it.
There was a power outage the other day, but I keep my machine on a surge protector.
I generally try to take really good care of my computers so seeing something wrong out of the blue like this is a little freaky for me.

Each "side" is operated independently, so slots 1, 2, 3 and 4 are one set, and 5, 6, 7, and 8 are an independent set. The third and fourth slots on each side share a memory channel, so a failure of one module in these two slots could possibly disable the other one.
The Mac Pro uses the Error Correction Code hardware built into its Xeon processor to provide single-bit (in a word) Error Detection and Correction in Hardware. It also can detect double-bit errors, but these cause a kernel panic, machine-check, error overflow or uncorrected error. This is by design, to avoid poisoning you data.
The Error Correction Code hardware is used in a special way at Startup. Any failure (correctable or not) that occurs in the first few seconds while running the Power-On Self Test causes your Mac to declare the slot(s) of those modules "empty" and simply not use them in the running system. Vigilance is required, because the next time you run this test, those Bad modules may pass.
So the movie version is that you have some DIMM(s) that have failed, and you should remove them from your Mac and consider whether to replace them with good modules, or to add some larger modules.
I expect your recent power failure, protected by a UPS, is merely a coincidence, not a cause-and-effect.

Need help improving XP SP3 performance on 4-core Mac Pro 2009

I'm running Windows XP SP3 under Boot Camp 3 (Mac OS X v. 10.6.2). Currently, XP is on a second partitioned HD, but it was previously running on a drive all its own with the same problems which are:
When I boot into Windows the sound stutters quite a bit. I updated the Realtek drivers and used the Apple USB device (24" LED speakers) but nothing completely got rid of the static/stuttering.
The real problem comes when running Left 4 Dead. Whenever I get to a new part of any level (where zombies are) the graphics freeze for up to a few seconds and the sound gets glitchy, repeating broken staticky snippets. I don't have other games installed but I get similar performance when watching a YouTube video in Firefox.
Is this normal for Windows on a Mac Pro or do other Mac Pro Boot Campers run Windows smoothly? I have seen YouTube videos of Windows running smoothly on MacBook Pros and iMacs. Just wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
Finally, I'm running two graphics cards, an ATI 4870 and an NVIDIA GT120. I've run with both on, one off, the other off, the NVIDIA removed, the NVIDIA installed. No matter what I do, the video glitchiness is always pretty bad. (The audio is also bad.)

I have had success running boot camp on an 8-core Mac Pro from 2009. I have an ATI 4870.
I initially used Windows 7 Beta (32bit) and then RC (64bit) and finally the shipping version (64 bit Professional).
32-Bit crippled Crysis performance for me (only the demo). I was able to run the game with most settings all the way up (excluding Anti-aliasing), at 1920x1080 and it ran fine for about one minute before hitting the hard-drive for about 10 seconds. This thrashing occurred repeatedly and I have up - that problem was resolved when I moved to 64bit Windows.
Other games I have played with no trouble are The Orange Box & Borderlands, each with maxed resolution and settings.
Optical audio and the front headphones work fine for me - though the 4 conductor cord does not recognize the microphone (from an iPhone headset) in Windows, which gets me down as it would be nice to audio-chat in some games.
Try these thing in this order if you can, and have not already:
Patch the game (though if this is happening in Firefox as well, it seems like an OS problem)
Update directX (I really have no clue here, I assume Windows does this automatically?)
Try demos of other games
Upgrade the OS to 64bit (Especially if you have over 3GB of ram
Go from XP to 7 (I have had no trouble with Windows 7 on my machine)
Try a DVI monitor (I am using a 21" Westinghouse, have never connected an Apple display)

1066Mhz Memory in a WestMere 12-core Mac Pro

Thanks for reading and for your help. I've tried to find an anwser on Google but without success.
I presently have a 2.26Ghz 8-core Mac Pro (Nahelem).
I would like to exchange it with a 2.66Ghz 12-core Mac Pro (Westmere).
I previously bought for my 2.26Ghz 8-core Mac Pro (Nahelem) 32Gb of RAM (Hynix HMT151R7BFR8C-G7). It works fine. And I would like to be able to use the same ram in the 2.66Ghz 12-core Mac Pro (Westmere). Is it possible? Even though the Nahelem uses 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM and the Westmere uses 1333MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM.
If it is possible, I understand that I won't be optimal, but I wish to save myself the hassle of selling my old ram, to buy some new. And I will eventually swap the RAM for the right one when prices go down a bit.

Westmere can use 1333 but shouldn't REQUIRE it. But with Apple hardware...?
And there isn't that much difference in performance. I know that was mentioned in one blog/post/article.

It should. I can't see how it would not (DDR3 is very forgiving except when you go above and beyond like faster RAM and over-clocking).

Upgrading? 3 year-old Mac Pro 3.1 with 8 GB RAM

I have a 3-year old Mac Pro (model 3.1) with 8 GB RAM and 2 Quad Core Intel Xeon processors. The RAM consists of 8 x 1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Two questions:
1) I need tp upgrade my RAM to 16 GB or more to run a new software (memory intensive application). I'm wondering if it's worthwhile to upgrade this system for ~$500 or just buy a new system with newer components. Also, whether the system can effectively use 16 GB of memory
2) Recently my Mac Pro has been very slow and jittery e.g. when I switch between applications. I've already tried things like cleaning up the hard drive / repairing disk permissions with little improvement. The only other thing I can think of doing is wiping the system clean and reinstalling everything. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and if there is asomething to do to prevent this from happening in the future.

Upgrade the hard drive: SSD or 10K WD VR 600GB or something.

Anyone using a 12 Core Mac Pro? I have HORRIBLE performance issues .. Help!

After the latest 10.7.4 Mac OS X update I have extremely horrible performance issues with AE ... and they were not so great before the update.
It is still stabilizing ... but an 1:19 clip in SD is taking 12 HOURS TO analyze and stabilize. !!!
The 12 cores are barely being used and this problem has been an issue since I purchased the suite over a year ago.
Does anyone else have problems using AE on their 12 CORE MAC PRO?
REPLY ONLY IF YOU HAVE A 12 CORE MAC PRO PLEASE.
There must be a problem because since the update ... Adobe Encore is PERFECT .. and ALL 12 CORES MAX OUT and the encoding is quick!!
I also have major problems between PP and AE using Dynamic link .. and slow renders in PP.
Everything else works fine .. other apps / other vendors.

Only half of my hyperthreaded processors are active when using AE "Warp Stabilizer". This issue was addressed before in the Forums. There was no solution. I dont' know if it is any better in CS 6.
Also the automatic saving of all linked compositions while using the dynamic link feature bewteen PP and AE causes huge inoperatable waiting times .. unbearable. My guess is that the new "Global Performance Cache " fixes this ... which I consider update to a terrible problem .. but they sell it as a feature ( Ill go into that later.

What RAID card are you using?
Do you use the Warp Stabilizer?

12 Core Mac Pro client fails to connect to xsan

Dear all, hopefully someone can shed some light on this problem.
We have an xsan system running with clients and MDCs running 10.6.6, XSAN 2.2.1. We have just purchased a new 12 core Mac Pro but we cannot get the machine connected as a client. XSAN admin sees the machine, but fails to write the configuration files on the client. We have tried running the client in 32 and 64 bit modes.
Has anybody else had the same problem? We do have one other 64 bit 8 core Mac Pro (early 2009) client connected without a problem.
Any advice would be greatfully received.

What's the max power consumption limit for the Mac Pro's 2 GPU Mini PCl-e power slots? I have to know because I have to decide which GPU I plan on buying. I'd be thankful if someone helped me with this.

you might want to look at www.barefeats.com and then probably limit to Mac edition cards. Budget and what you hope to achieve. And whether you want it mostly for games in Windows and w/o boot screen or even willing to add a 2nd PSU just for power and 2 x 8-pin plus 2 x 6-pin power.
EVGA Mac Edition GTX 680 is two 6-pin and $580 area.
AMD has Mac Edition 7950
You will actually find more about unsupported cards and their use on MacRumors. And you do need 10.8.3+ for most anything beyond Apple's ATI 5x70.
I don't think looking at power usage is where I would have started my search.

Is the new Core i7 MacBook Pro as fast as my quad core Mac Pro?

I'm wondering if someone could advise me about the relative power of my current Mac Pro (2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon 8GB RAM), and the new 17" MacBook Pro (2.66GHz Core i7 8GB RAM). Is there a website that details such comparisons?
The reason being that I'm thinking of exchanging my Mac Pro for a MacBook Pro, so that I would be able to have a more mobile system. If the processing speed, on tasks such as video encoding, was similar between these machines, then I am tempted.
Other than processing speed, I'm wondering if there would be any disadvantages to going ahead with this swap. One thing that comes to mind is that I would need to unplug a number of cables when taking the MacBook Pro on the road, but as I wouldn't be doing so a lot I don't see this as a particular issue. In terms of storage, I would be getting external enclosures to house the SATA drives currently in my Mac Pro and connecting them to the Macbook Pro through FireWire 800, which presumably means slower transfers between the drives, but again, this isn't a particular concern as transfer speeds would still be pretty fast.
My Mac Pro is connected to an Apple Cinema Display so obviously I would keep hold of that as a display for the MacBook Pro, and use my Apple keyboard/mouse as well.
Are there any other disadvantages that I haven't considered?

OK. Here's some test results. The most intense process I use on my Macs is using Handbrake to encode either DVDs or mkv files to mp4 files which generally pushes all cores to the max. I am using the latest 64bit version of Handbrake on both Macs.
So I took a sample mkv file of 65 seconds length and ran it using the same settings on both the Mac Pro (2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon 8GB RAM) and the Macbook Pro (2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 4GB RAM), straight after starting up both Macs so that there was plenty of RAM to spare on both. I ran the test two times on each Mac and got similar results both times, with the best results on each machine being as follows:
Mac Pro: max RAM used: 380MB, Time for encode: 102 seconds
Macbook Pro: max RAM used: 495MB, Time for encode: 84 seconds
This was for a 2-pass encoding with Turbo first pass to 2200kbps MP4 file from 720p mkv file.
So the Macbook Pro is coming in considerably quicker for this particular task. I'm not sure why the Mac Pro used less RAM, and whether this is the main factor in the time difference. Like I said, there was plenty of unused RAM on both Macs when I ran the test. I am no expert on the inner workings of Macs!
Needless to say though, I am happy with the results and very happy with the new Macbook Pro.

My old Dual 2.5Ghz PowerMac had a coolant leak and Apple is replacing it with a Quad Core 2.66Ghz Mac Pro with 8 gigs of ram and 1 terabyte hd. Is the new Quad Core iMac a more powerful computer? 2.66Ghz vs. 2.66Ghz - NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 vs. ATI Radeon HD 4850? I'm thinking about not even opening the Mac Pro and putting it and my 24" Dell monitor on eBay. Help!

The iMac still has no PCI Express slots and is limited in the RAM upgrade versatility compared to the Mac Pro. Furthermore with only a single Firewire port, uncompressed video capture to a fast hard drive has to take place to a separate partition of the internal hard drive to ensure uninterrupted capture. On the hand it has an infrared port for the remote that the Mac Pro doesn't have, and an SD slot. The SD slot is good for still digital camera media, if you have an SD compatible camera, and it is good for "sneakernet" of data to other machines with SD slots or SD camera adapters. Many printers have these slots nowadays too. A bootable backup can be made to an SD card.
PCI Express offers SATA cards, and Fiberoptic connector cards for faster hard drive connectivity, as well as faster networking, and faster video and audio interface cards than can be found via Firewire and USB.
Also the Mac Pro can have up to 4 internal SATA hard drives.
So the question is, are you going to miss the expansion capabilities, or not? That should be the deciding factor.

Eight Core Mac Pro

Just a post in case someone wants to know; Logic 8 with the new Mac Pro 8 core machines rocks. I got the stock 2.8GHZ machine (2GB RAM). Screen redraws and meters are smooth, no studders or core overloads. Upgrading from dual 2Ghz G5. Just have to replace my UAD-1 cards now - bummer...
Oh yeah, after the migration from the old Mac, the Apogee ensemble worked straight away without reinstalling the drivers, etc.

So I decided to upgrade my old dual 2.5GHz G5 with the dreaded AMD-8131 PCI chipset to one of the shiny new 8-core Mac Pros that were announced last week. Of course, this meant that I also had to upgrade my 2 UAD-1 cards to UAD-1e cards. The cards are installed in slots 3 & 4 - the PCI Express 2.0 slot is open. I have a project with the following plugin instance counts:
4 Cambridge
5 SPL Transient Designer
1 Pultec Pro
1 Precision Maximizer
Would anyone have any idea why I would receive the "One or more Powered Plug-Ins have been disabled. CPU load limit exceeded" when opening the project on the new Mac Pro but not on the old G5? Both computers have 2GB ram. The old computer was running Tiger but the new one is running Leopard. I'm using Logic 8.0.1.
The thing is, all the plugins appear to be loading. If I unload the Precision Maximizer, the reload it, I get the error message as soon as I select a preset. Again, in this case, the plugin seems to be loading.
