Upgrade my eMac or get a new system?

My eMac has been running slowly for some time now. Safari and Firefox crash constantly. The computer gets logged when I run several programs at once. I don't run many high memory applications (such as gaming or video editing). I mainly use my computer for internet, email, chatting and working my iTunes.
I am running OS 10.4.9 and have 512mb of memory. My computer is 4 years old. I am a little frustrated that this system only has USB 1.0 making synching my new iPod Nano slow. I am thinking about upgrading the memory and reinstalling the operating system versus purchasing a new iMac.
What are people's thoughts about upgrading my computer versus getting a new one. I'd have to save up money for a while to get a new system.
Thanks for the input!

Judging from your description of your use, I would stick with your eMac.
I upgraded my eMac and still find it a very usable computer.
The specs for my eMac show the max RAM as 1Gig but that is only because the biggest PC2700 memory stick was 512 at the time of release. It sees and utilizes 2Gig just fine (1Gig x2). I am guessing by your description that you have a 1Ghz eMac, so I can't say for sure that 2Gig will work for you as well because my eMac is a 1.25, but I am willing to bet it would.
I also upgraded the Hard Drive to a 250Gig drive. I then purchased a Firewire enclosure and used the old internal drive as an external firewire drive. This eliminated the need to backup anything before doing a clean install of the OS on the new drive. If I need files from the "old computer", I just pull them off the external drive.
That said, I would not recommend performing the Hard Drive upgrade yourself unless you are experienced in this type of thing. Once you open the case of the eMac you are exposing yourself to potentially deadly high voltages.
If the HDD upgrade is not for you, simply purchase an inexpensive external firewire drive and copy the entire drive to the external, then do a format and install on the internal drive.
I personally don't think the inconvenience of a somewhat slow sync of your iPod justifies the $1,200 for a new iMac. Some simple changes in "process" can probably minimize this pain, like starting your sync before you go to bed or start dinner, etc. I continued to used my eMac until very recently for Photoshop and video editing using iMovie HD. Your eMac is more than capable of performing the tasks you described. Had your description of use been different, my recommendation would probably be different as well.
I apologize for the lengthy reply, but I hope it is of some help.

My macbook is OSX 10.6.8, should I try to upgrade it or get a new macbook?

Depends on how old it is and if it is able to do what you need it to do. Apple does not make a MacBook any longer. There are just 13" and 15" MacBook Pros.
If you need to upgrade OS X, then find out if your model can be upgraded past Snow Leopard. Note that Lion and later do not support any PPC-only software because the Rosetta emulator no longer works after Snow Leopard.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Upgrade my mac or get a new one

I have a macbook pro from 2009. I'm wondering if it's worth it to have more memory and a better hard drive and new battery installed or just sell it and get a newer mac. It's working fine, a little short on battery life but otherwise good. Any thoughts?

if your Macbook Pro is working for you with no issues (aside from the battery), then it makes more sense to upgrade and spend the few extra $$$ on it.
as mentioned above - going with more RAM and SSD will give your Macbook Pro a nice boost in performance and would last you another 2 or 3 years.
So $400 is a good investment right now for something that currently works for you.

  • I need advise on whether to upgrade my iBookG4 or get a new computer?

Hi everyone! This is my first post here, and after reading through some of the other posts I realize that many people are having the same problems as me with my OS 10.3.9. I have been having issues with my computer for a while, and keep spending money trying to get one problem fixed, but then something else goes wrong. Most recently, I got a new hard drive installed which helped with the speed. Now it appears I need a new battery because it dies every 5-10 minutes if its not plugged in. After buying an iTouch, I realized that 10.3.9 isn't compatible with any of the new ipods, or newer versions of itunes, etc... So after talking to multiple people in Apple stores and over the phone I have been told many different things about how to upgrade my computer (just like many of you). A few people have told me my computer wouldn't be able to handle leopard, so I should upgrade to the OS before that. My worry is that since my computer is going on 5 years old, and I keep spending all this money on trying to get it fixed, and getting different pieces of advice, should I just try and sell my computer and buy a new one? I'm not very good with the technical terms, but this is what i know about my Mac:
    Processor: 1.07 GHz PowerPC G4
    Memory: 768 MB DDR SDRAM
    Capacity: 74.39 GB
    Available: 46.13 GB
    Used: 28.25 GB
If anyone could help me figure out if my computer can handle the new leopard (and work like new for more than a few months), or if its smarter for me to buy a new computer I would really appreciate it. I am at the point where if spending money now on a new Mac will save me in the long run I'm willing to do so. Any advice will help! Thank you!

    Lindsay,
Your iBookG4 is still a pretty awesome Mac. Like already said, it has the power to run Leopard, but it depends if you have an internal DVD drive.
Then I suppose you have to add up the cost of the OS, perhaps another 512MB RAM, iLife 08 and replacements for any favourite apps that you currently use (Leopard breaks a lot of stuff, but Intel breaks even more). Compare it to the cost of a new MacBook, which wil have all of that included and be 3-4x faster too.
It also depends on what you want to achieve with your iBook. My PMG4 still cuts it today, I still use it in preference to my new Mac Pro, It's about the same age as your iBook, and I'll only stop using it when it becomes "painfully" slow. My 1 year old son currently uses the Mac Pro (parts for a Mac Pro are easier to replace than those for a PMG4).
I think your choice is simple, if you can a cheap copy of Tiger, use that, it'll get your iPod Touch up and running. It came in DVD and 4 CD version (by request).
Leopard will work for you too but a lot of the best eye-candy requires quite a meaty graphics card and you may need a RAM upgrade and replacement software - OS9 Classic is not supported in Leopard.

  • I aam thinking of changing from a PC to a Mac.  Will I need to buy a new Apple compatible version of Lightroom, do I have to pay to upgrade or can I get the new version free?

I am thinking of changing from a PC to a Mac.  Will I need to buy a new, Apple compatible, version of Lightroom, or can I upgrade to it, or can I get it free as I've paid for the PC version?

Your licence is not platform specific, so Lightroom can be used on any two machines (Mac and/or WIndows), with one actually being used at any given time.
    So no, you're money's safe!

  • New system for CS5.5? Some advice please?

Hi- I am getting a new system built specifically to work with Production Premium CS5.5.
I'm afraid I know next to nothing about hardware!
These are some specs that the guys in the shop said would work?
Do you have any comments- will it work? Any better suggestions?
    Many thanks

There are several major problems with that build:
    1) The two WD Green hard drives are too slow for video editing. They spin at only 5400 RPM, not 7200 RPM.
    2) The i7-950 and X58 combo is about to become obsolesced by the new LGA 2011 Sandy Bridge-E platform with the X79 chipset.
    3) Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.x still does not support OpenCL GPU acceleration at all. In fact, the GPU accelerated mode requires an Nvidia CUDA GPU with 896MB or more VRAM in order to even work at all. As a result, the ATi GPU-equipped systems will run CS5.x only in software-only MPE mode, which is much, much slower than the GPU accelerated mode. In other words, the HD 6770 will be equally as slow as integrated motherboard graphics (as far as performance in CS5.x is concerned).
    4) Windows 7 Home Premium will not see anywhere near the full 24GB of RAM. In fact, that OS is capped at 16GB of RAM total. You will need Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate in order to use more than 16GB of RAM.
    5) That 600W PSU is nowhere near powerful enough to run a video editing system of this class. In fact, that OCZ PSU is not even that good quality-wise. You will need a reallty good quality 750W to 850W 80-Plus Gold rated PSU.
In other words, the guys in the shop know little to nothing about the stuff that they sell.

  • New system through app store

i bought a new macbook pro about a month ago (june 12th) and the guy that helped me said i would get the new system (lion?) through the app store for free....but it's not happening, what should i do?

Be patient, the download depending on your bandwidth will take ahwile...45 minutes or more. The download should show progress in the Purchases tab of the Mac App Store.
You should not lose any data, but is your data backed up?
If you have the opportunity to backup you can still do that. After the download is complete the installer will be located in your Applications Folder. Before you actually proceed with the installation you should backup your data as a precaution.

  • HP 2510p - May Need New System Board

An attempt was made to dock the notebook while the power connector was connected to the laptop.
It connected but was out of alignment with the dock. Now when power is tuned on, the front LED’s all come on, after ~ 15 seconds the disc drive LED goes out and nothing else happens. The display never comes on. Could this burn out the system board and the processor? I can get a new system board, they were shipped with one of three CPU speeds; are the CPU’s interchangeable to any of the boards or do the boards have to be replaced with same that is in the system?
    Thanks

    Niel...
I installed Leopard 10.5.6 and then it upgraded to 10.5.8, when I installed it I had the old info saved to a "previous systems" folder, where most of my artwork, etc. were saved, I have a one terabyte Lacie backup that unfortunately did not work as it was intended...it saved the new info and not the old. I did look into the system preferences folder and found the classic file, of course it wouldn't launch...but I have the old G 5 startup discs and will try to do it as you stated. I will try also to move it out of the previous folders file to my hard drive and see how that works.
thank you for your time and help,

  • I have cs5. It's an upgrade. How do I get it on my new system?

The system I was using it on decide it was time to die, so now I'm trying to install my cs5 on my new system, (using my cs5 disk) and it's telling me I don't have the requirement. (which the new system wouldn't, it's on my dead old system) HELP! what do I do now? How do I get cs5 on my new system? I have the disk, and serial number. Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks John.  Sorry if I sounded crabby, I do apologize.  I'm just aggravated about all this.  I clicked on that link you sent, I couldn't find a number to actually talk to someone, just sends me to the forums.  I did find a link for "Issues when updating the software" I clicked on that and it got me to another link, "error, this serial number etc" , I click on that.  It takes me to another page, says to register the product.  *it already is and has been for years*  then says for me to contact them.  I'd love to, but all I've been getting is sent to the forums.  Anyways, this last link/page states that I need to talk to a support staff member to enter some code. And that's where I stand.

I would like to get the new lion operating system but I cant without first getting the latest version of snow leopard. however when I go to update my software it doesnt show that any update is available.

    10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. You need the Snow Leopard DVD;
You can get it only by phone now from Apple.
In the US, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a sales assistant. Last quoted price was $19.99 for the single-user and $29.99 for the family licence.
For other countries, check here; http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Don't forget to ask for Sales; the tech support guys can't help.
If you want Lion, rather than Mountain Lion, the same Sales team can give you a download code to use at the Mac AppStore.
To get the App Store, you need to update your new Snow Leopard from 10.6.3 (which is the version on the installer) to 10.6.8 with the combo update; http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Be warned that the upgrades will render a lot of older software unusable, and will need new drivers for printers and scanners in all likelihood.
