Upgrade my iBook g4  Mac OS X 10.3.9 toMac OS X 10.6

Can I upgrade my iBook g4  Mac OS X 10.3.9 to Mac OS X 10.6 retail DVD

You have a PowerPC-based Mac, and the most recent version a PowerPC-based Mac can run is Mac OS X 10.5.8. Apple dropped PowerPC support in 10.6.
You are running Panther, and you can upgrade to Tiger or Leopard, if your Mac meets the requirements > http://support.apple.com/kb/sp517 As these versions aren't supported by Apple anymore, you will have to buy them in Internet at a high price. To be honest, it's better to get another Mac or PC

    Mac OS X 10.4

You need a retail DVD and not one which originally shipped with a Mac.

Well where is your library located now if not in the iTunes folder?  See the links below on what your iTunes folder should look like and put it back together:

  • How to get books onto iPad when iBooks for Mac refuses to sync.

I have around 300 books which were originally in the books section of iTunes. Since upgrading to Mavericks the new iBooks for Mac is moved them all over and I ma now unable to access most of them on my iPad despite making sure all settings are correct. None of the books I use for study created by iBooks Author will now transfer. The only ones that seem to are those recently purchased from iTunes. Anybody out there found a solution yet. Apparently Apple admit that only books purchased from iTunes will sync, but I need to be able to get them on my iPad. I don't care if they sync or not.

There are a few categorical places one must visit in order to synchronize iBooks for Mac with IOS iBooks. There is no need to remove the iBook for Mac application.
System Preferences > iCloud > Documents and Data is enabled
IOS Settings > iBooks > Sync Collections (enabled) and optionally Sync Bookmarks (enabled)Assumption that iCloud is enabled on the IOS device with documents and data enabled
iBook for Mac > Preferences > General: Sync: Sync bookmarks, highlights, and collections across devices
    iTunes
Pick your IOS Device under DEVICES in the left nav
Choose Books along the top toolbar
In the Books panel, choose one of the following
    Books and PDF Files
    Books only
    PDF only
    In the Sync Books panel
    All Books
Selected BooksClick the box next to the books you wish to Sync
    Select iTunes Sync
The books (and PDF) you selected above are now on your IOS device

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • To upgrade or buy new mac.

i need to get some opinion from u guys out there. i'm using an 12.1" ibook g4 512ram for 2 years. Things are fine but lately i feels it is getting slow (maybe the softwares are getting more demanding). I thinking should i up the ram to 1.5 and add in the leopard software or should i sell the ibook and get a new mac. upgrading the ibook will cost about ~1000 rm. trading the ibook can fetch about 2000rm so i cant really decide. it is cheaper to upgrade but in the long run? can anyone give their opinion here

That sounds like a good option--there is nothing wrong with Tiger, and there have been some problems with Leopard--just peruse the Leopard forum some time. You may as well do your mobil computing and not be worrying about which printers will work or whether or not your menu bar is translucent and all of that stuff. After I upgraded my MBP to Leopard, the free printer that I got with the MBP would no longer work. Eventually I imagine there will be a driver, but I have encountered more than one 3rd party that is not yet up to date on OS 10.5, and I imagine that others will take a while too. So it could be a hassle if you have a lot of older software. As for free upgrades, I have no idea, but I think the problem would be waiting for them to have upgrades available.
One thing you can do is to use the free application WhatSize to check on what is using up your hard drive space.
    http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/
Sometimes logs and caches can get out of hand and use up space and slow you down. But the additional RAM should give you a big boost in performance.
As to iMac vs. a MacBook, that's hard to say. It's really up to you. But since you need to save up a few bucks first, you will have time to mull it over. You might browse both of those forums for a while and then maybe ask your question on one of them if you are still undecided.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading from ibook g4 to Tiger

I recently decided to help my girlfriend upgrade her ibook g4's OS to Tiger, since she's running 10.3.9 and can't update to the newest version of iTunes. I made sure her computer met all the necessary technical requirements as per apple's website, then proceeded to buy the OS on ebay. When the disks came I noticed that they read "Macbook install disk", but since apple's website hadn't made any differentiation between a macbook and an ibook on its' requirements page I didn't think too much of it. I backed the computer up and then attempted to install the new OS. After shutting down and restarting, the normal grey apple screen came on, but after a couple seconds a large display appearead which read "Your computer needs to be restarted, etc.", and over this screen was all sorts of fragmented code, including a message saying a driver couldn't be found, blah blah blah. I figured this meant wrong type of install disk. Does anyone know if I can even find a version of this more recent OS which will work on an ibook?

Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.

  • Need to upgrade my ibook

I currently have an ibook with MAC OS 9.1 and would like to upgrade it to a MAC OS X operating system, so my 5 year old daughter can play her leap frog games on it. I tried playing it with mac os 9.1 but it has an error stating to get a mac os x or later version. were can i get this operating system at?

    Hi, nthansaric -
Unfortunately, the designation "M6411" carries little meaning for most of us. This Apple Kbase article should be able to help you determine what the Apple model designation is for your machine -
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1772
It is important to know what it is, since some versions of OSX are suitable for some models and not others.
What can also assist us is to know how much RAM is in the machine (physical RAM, not including Virtual Memory), what its processor speed is, and how much free space is available on the hard drive.
... so i guess the very first mac os x verison out there would do?
    Not so.
The first version of OSX was 10.0.x (Cheetah), but it was a Public Beta version. A Public Beta version of software is software known to be not yet complete, but which is distributed (usually at no cost) to those wishing to to have fun testing it.
The next version, OSX 10.1.x (Puma), although a commercial release was not a whole lot better - some of its implementations were a bit rocky, and it suffered from slowness.
The first reasonably reliable and sound version of OSX was 10.2.x (Jaguar).

  • Upgrading my iBook G4

    Dear all,
I have had this iBook for five years (bought it new) and has been working flawlessly since. Last year I bought an iMac which functions as my main computer. Still I would like to upgrade my iBook G4 as far as possible.
For you info I am giving its full specs:
    iBook G4, late 2004/mid-2005, 14.1 inch display, 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4, 1.25 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.5.8, Hard Drive 60 GB.
Now I wonder if I could increase its RAM even further or that's really the maximum. Also, is there anyway I can raise the speed and space of the hard drive? How complicated is the process? Can I do it on my own? How much (on average) does it cost to make these modifications?
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Hi Ron_9,
Ram is at it's maxium and so is OSX - good news on the hard drive you can change it a 320GB that's the biggest I've seen BUT you need a PATA not SATA drive I would say a 5400rpm would better than a 7200rpm less heat and longer battery life.
As to can you do this yourself, well yes, it took me about an 1 hr to take the machine apart and change the hard drive and CD drive, but belive me this thing is a PIG to dismantle and there are lots and lots of little screws 15 in the top heat sheild alone - still want to do it ?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Yes, you can upgrade your computer's OS to Tiger (10.4x) using the Archive and Install option which will preserve your settings, preferences and data, as previously noted and linked by Jason. However, before you undertake any major procedure, and installation is one of them, you should have a reliable up-to-date backup of everything you cannot afford to lose. For more information on backing up, please post back and ask.
The move from Panther to Tiger is an upgrade, which involves purchasing new software disks. You can download updates once you have the basic software installed, but the initial installation is from disks you have to purchase. See Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?.
To install Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Tiger. The specs you list do not tell us how much RAM you have installed.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail version of Tiger. Your computers's RAM will max out at 1.25 GB. I suggest that you get to as close to that as possible. Your other specs look OK, except that if you do a lot of music or photos you may find your 30 GB HDD filling up pretty quickly.
Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store or other retailers, on 4 CDs, from applerescue.
Please note that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided since they are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and will therefore, very likely, cause problems during or after installation. On the legal side, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite my mac doesn't shut off. The off button doesn't work

After upgrading to Yosemite, my mac doesn't shut off.  The off button no longer works. I want to shut the thing off.

    Jehreth,
On my Macbook Pro you have to hold the power button down a moment till a little window pops up and asks what you would like to do. Also you can go to:
    (  ) Menu > Shut down ...
to shutdown your Mac. Or are you saying that these options do not work?
    Hope that helps,
