Upgrade my ipad 4 from iOS 6.1 to iOS 8.1.2?

What should I expect, good and bad when I upgrade my ipad 4 from iOS 6.1 to iOS 8.1.2?  I'm starting to have crashing problems running with iOS 6.  Looks like I'm being forced to upgrade, but I'm not reading good things about iOS 8.1.2.

I have an iPad 4 and I have it updated to the latest update. It works perfectly fine and how it should be working. I got it November 2013 and I have had 0 problems with it.

I just upgraded my iPad from 4.3.3 to the newest - I think 6.1.3.  I cannot find my photos and videos.  I tried a restore, but after 3 hours, it's timing out.  Pardon my ignorance on asking this question; but is there a way to find my photos?  I do nto care about anythign else.
Here are the steps I though I took this morning:
    Backup iPad
Connect to iTunes and downlaod newest version of iTunes and then newest iOS
    restart Vista Laptop
    upgrade to newest iOS
I knew somethign was wrong when it took about 6 hours to upgrade the iPad
at the end it errored with this message error (-50), but the upgrade worked
I was expecting to see all my photos but didn't see them
I have tried a restore to a back up 2 times.  The first time took 3 hours and just sort of timed out - it kept saying that there was an hour to go
I tried it again 2 hours ago and same message.
They are very valuable to me and so now I am panicking
    Your help is much appreciated

    Hi Eric Ferguson,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Error 13, 14, 35 and 50 (or -50)
These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
    Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Upgraded my iTunes from 4.3.3 to iOS 7.0 and now iTunes cannot locate my iPad 2 or any of the movies/books I purchased

Computer illiterate here.  I wanted to upgrade my iPad2 from an iOS 4.3.5 to a 5.0 so i could upgrade some of my games.  Initially when iPad2 wanted to upgrade to 5.0 I said no because people said it was causing a lot of problems.  Now I cannot play certain games because I don't have iOS 5.0.  I went to iTunes because I cannot locate any upgrades on my iPad 2 and the upgrade was to iOS 7.0 which I did.  Now when I go to my iPad 2, it says HELLO and wants me to follow all these steps.  When I try to restore my back up, iTunes cannot locate my iPad 2 or other items I purchased.  What can I do, I should have just left it at iOS 4.3.5 - at least I could use my iPad 2?

    Hey there SNagai,
It sounds like you are not seeing your iPad in iTunes after updating it. I would recommend the following article to help you get that working again:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538
Here is an overview of the troubleshooting to be done:
    1. Update iTunes
    2. Check the USB cable
    3. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    4. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service
    5. Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed
    6. Check for third-party software conflicts
If the issue persists, try uninstalling iTunes and its associated apps with either of these two articles depending on your operating system version:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows XP

    Or

If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. • HT5567 I need to upgrade my ipad from 4.3 to at least a 5.0 to access alot of apps i've tried to download.

I cannot find where I can just go to pick an upgrade or update that just says (press this button to download) I am
new to the ipad, I just need some guidance. can someone help?

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 7.0.4. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.
You can no longer update to iOS 6.x, or down grade the iOS.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and antivirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.
How to Upgrade to iOS 7
The iOS 7.0 update requires around 2.5 GB of storage space, so if your iPad is almost full, you may need to clear up some space. You can check your available space in Settings -> General -> Usage.
There are two ways to upgrade to iOS 7: You can use your Wi-Fi connection, or you can connect your iPad to your PC and update through iTunes. We'll go over each method.
    To upgrade using Wi-Fi:
Note: If your iPad's battery is under 50%, you will want to plug it into your charger while performing the update.
    Go into the iPad's Settings.
Locate and tap "General" from the menu on the left.
The second option from the top is "Software Update". Tap this to move into the update settings.
Tap "Download and Install". This will start the upgrade, which will take several minutes and will reboot your iPad during the process. If the Download and Install button is grayed out, trying clearing up some space. The space required by the update is mostly temporary, so you should gain most of it back after iOS 7 is installed.
Once the update is installed, you may have to run through the initial steps of setting up your iPad again. This is to account for new features and settings.
    To upgrade using iTunes:
First, connect your iPad to your PC or Mac using the cable provided when you purchased your device. This will allow iTunes to communicate with your iPad.
You will also need the latest version of iTunes. Don't worry, you will be prompted to download the latest version when you launch iTunes. Once it installs, you may be asked to setup iCloud by logging into your iTunes account. If you have a Mac, you may be prompted on whether or not you want to enable the Find my Mac feature.
Now you are ready to begin the process:
If you upgraded iTunes earlier, go ahead and launch it. (For many, it will launch automatically when you plug in your iPad.)
Once iTunes is launched, it should automatically detect that a new version of the operating system exists and prompt you to upgrade to it. Choose Cancel. Before updating, you will want to manually sync your iPad to make sure everything is up to date.
After canceling the dialog box, iTunes should automatically sync with your iPad.
If iTunes doesn't automatically sync, you can manually do it by selecting your iPad within iTunes, clicking on the File menu and choosing Sync iPad from the list.
After your iPad has been synced to iTunes, select your iPad within iTunes. You can find it on the left side menu under Devices.
From the iPad screen, click on the Update button.
After verifying that you want to update your iPad, the process will begin. It takes a few minutes to update the operating system during which time your iPad may reboot a few times.
After updating, you may be asked a few questions when your device finally boots back up. This is to account for new settings and features.

  • HT201210 cant restore my ipad from itunes after updating latest ios.  message tells me to turn off 'find my ipad' from my ipad, but I can't because the set up is not complete without the restore.  What do I do?

I don't know if I'm repeating my question. I can't restore my ipad after updating to latest ios. The battery went low, I had to eject and plug in to charge.  The set up will not complete without resoring from icloud or itunes (i backed up to computer using itunes) or setting up the ipad as a New ipad.  I want to restore all my stuff but the message I get in itune says "Find my ipad must be turned off before 'ipad' can be restored".  Go to icloud settings on your ipad and turn off Find My iPad before restoring your iPad.".  I cant' get to this setting on my ipad because the set up is not complete!!!  I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm afraid if I set up the ipad as new it will backup the new ipad over my previous backup and then I will loose all my photos, songs, aps, notes,......

I have the same problem and we can't simply just restore from the backup. It says that I have to set up my iPad through restoring. So I tried restoring it in iTunes but it won't restore until I have to turn off this **** "Find My iPad" crap but I couldn't because the set up's not complete and it won't let me go to my settings unless I set it up. So basically it's asking me to go to my settings but before I could go to it I have to restore, and in order to restore I have to go to settings. Get where I'm at?
Please, Apple Tech people! Help this 14 year old girl on her period, PMS-ing, thinking about how I want  to strangle however made this mistake of a set up, updating her iPad in 3 am in the morning cursing the day she even thought of updating. I seriously need to get out of this loophole. I don't want to use my other iPad that only has 16GB. I just wanted the pretty graphics I saw in my parent's iPad airs, I don't ask for anything more :''''(

  • Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade my iPad from wireless only to 3g capabilities?

I was given an ipad2 for a gift and it was engraved so I can't exchage it but it is only wireless. Does apple offer upgrades to the wireless to enable 3G usage as well?

you cannot upgrade the Wifi only model to 3G model as the hardware is different. you could look into getting a 3G hotspot device from Verizon/AT&T/Sprint/etc

  • Is there a way to upgrade my ipad from 7.0.0 to 7.0.1 instead of straight to 7.0.4

I am trying to update my ipad to 7.0.1. I am on 7.0. But when I go to the software update it goes straight to 7.0.4. But I want 7.0.1 is there a way to manually update it 1 version??
    Thanks,
    Nolan

Your update will be the most current iOS version which is currently 7.0.4. You cannot update to anything in-between 7.0 and 7.0.4.

  • Here's the thing guys...I upgraded my iPad from 6.0.1 to 6.1.3 then to 7.0 without backing up the files so I lost all my pictures and video, some precious family moments, so I'm wondering is there anyway to recover them,by any means that is?

I'm seriously in a pinch here...plz help me out people...those are too valuable to me...

If you didn't get everything back you can try recovery-android.com. It works with ipads. There's a free trial so if you didn't get back all your pictures and videos you took after your backup last month, you might want to give it a try.
    Hope this helps.

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; devices running an iOS version prior to 5.0 can't be updated straight from the device. It will be updated to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware.

I upgraded my iPad to the newest version of iOs and now the body of the message is covering the full screen and cannot see the list of mailboxes, I have no idea of what to do to fix this.

That view is the normal view in the portrait orientation. If you are in portrait, swipe left to right and the mailbox list shows up. If you are in landscape, then that isn't right.
