Upgrade my router and Airport Express no longer works

Got an Airport Express 802.11g (v.6.3) it was working fine until I upgraded my router to Linksys E4200 v2.
Airport utility (5.5.3) would not see it. I plugged it my MAC and still would not see it. Tried soft, hard and factory reset. Finally it sees it!
I updated the info about my new network through Airport Utility and after it restarts AirPort Express the amber light is flashing and APU is unable to find it.
So the only way I can get it to see it is hard reset and plug it in.
Tried this like 3 times now with the same result.
It's a few years old so maybe it is not compatible with my router? Although it should still see it after I've made my settings in Airport Utility after all it's still plugged in and my router is not involved at that point. Any ideas?

Well I fixed it myself.
My router had by default WPA2 / WPA mixed mode" security mode and my airport Express did not have the exact same one and was to "WPA/ WPA2 personal". Then I switch my router security mode to WPA2 Personal and match it on the Airport Express and back in business.

  • How to setup ADSL moden router and Airport Express 802.11n (1st Generation) to provide internet and airplay connections to multiple devices?

I have a Netgear wireless ADSL modem router (wireless + four ethernet out ports)  that i'd like to connect to a 1st gen Airport Express to create a small home network to provide internet access for a MacBook, iPhone and Apple TV, and to provide Airplay connection to the Apple TV and Airport Express audio output jack.
I'd like to turn off the wireless function of the ADSL modem router, and to have from one of its ethernet out ports an ethernet cable providing internet directly connected to my MacBooks ethernet port.
Then from one of the other ethernet outs on the ADSL modem router an ethernet cable connected to the Airport Express's ethernet port. This would be to provide wireless internet connection for the Apple TV and iPhone via WiFi from the AE.
At the same time as the MacBook is receviing internet soley via the ethernet in port, i'd like it to have WiFi connection to the AE to provide Airplay connection to the Apple TV and the AE's audio out jack.
Is this all possible? How should I go about to configure this? How should the AE's ethernet port be configured?
Any special modes the ADSL modem router or Airport Express should be in? ie bridge or client?
    Thanks

On the ADSL modem router web-based interface, should I set any security setting? I think not as there'll be no wireless signal coming from it, only wired ethernet connections to both MacBook and AE. Security should only be set on the AE to prevent someone from accessing its WiFi signal. Is this assumption correct?
    These are all correct!
How should I go about setting up security for this network?
First I would recommend that you configure the AirPort Express for WPA2 Personal. This will provide you with the greastest level of security while still providing excellent bandwidth performance.
You would configure wireless security for the Express by using the AirPort Utility on a Mac, PC, or iOS device. Using your MacBook Pro as an example, you would do so as follows:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the Express, and then, click on Edit.
Select the Wireless tab to enable it.
Set the Wireless Security option to: WPA2 Personal
Enter the desired password in both the Wireless Password & Verify Password fields. Note: Use of a "strong" password is encourage here. By strong, I mean use a mix of upper/lowercase letters, numbers, & punctuation marks. Try not to use common dictionary words. If you operate your wireless in an area where security is of an utmost concern, I would further suggest that you change the wireless security password every 60-90 days. Also don't forget to change the default AirPort Base Station Administrator password as well.
Click on Update and allow the Express to restart.

  • New Airport Extreme and Older Airport Express No Longer Works

I recently bought a new Airport Extreme base station.   Now the Airport Express that I've had for a number of years no longer works, flashing amber.  It shows up under the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar, but when I try to follow Apple's instructions for configuring it, I get this message:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
I then tried downloading and installing Airport Utility 5.6 on my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.7.4) and received this error message: "AirPort Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported."
I then turned to my IPad, which also detected the Airport Express under Wi-Fi Settings but returned a message when I tried to set it up that the Airport Express couldn't be set by this software and re-directed me to the support web site.
While we have an Apple TV unit, I used the Airport Express to stream music directly to our stereo from my MacBook and IPad and Phone and would love to be able to continue to do so.  Has anyone found a workaround for this problem, or will I be forced to buy a new Airport Express as well?
Thanks for any help you can offer,
    Steve

I then tried downloading and installing Airport Utility 5.6 on my MacBook Pro (running OS X 10.7.4) and received this error message: "AirPort Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported."
I just tried this on my MacBook Pro running 10.7.4 and had no problems downloading and installing AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
AirPort Utility 5.6.1 will not install on a Mac running Lion....only Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Can you check again to make sure that you are trying to install 5.6 and not 5.6.1?

  • New Sky Hub Router and Airport Express wifi extension.

I have the new Sky router (Hub) and I am trying to extend the wifi signal in my house but it won't.
I have the 802.11n 1st Gen Airport Express which connects to the wifi network ok but keeps erroring when I try to Extend a wireless network.
Please help as its driving me mad.
    Many thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, you always need two Apple  AirPort devices to be able to "extend" a wireless network using wireless only.
A single AirPort router cannot "extend" the wireless network of a 3rd party router using wireless only.
If you only have one Apple router, it is usually possible to establish a wired Ethernet connection between the AirPort router and configure it to provide more wireless coverage that way. The downside of course, is that the connection must remain wired between your main router and the AirPort router.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, it might be possible to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send a signal over the existing powerlines in your home. The theory here is that you already have the wiring in place and just need the adapters.
In practice, the Ethernet powerline adapters are not always predictable in their performance in every installation.

  • Netgear router and airport express

    hi
could someone please help me and tell me(in very simple terms!) how to extend the range of my network. my mini mac is too far away from my netgear DG834GT router and have been trying for days to use a/ex to reach it.Have tried everything i know which i freely admit isnt much but airport utility doesn't seem to see the router. i have seen people having similar problems but am hoping someone is out there to take me through it in words of 2 syllables or less! help

charlie117, Welcome to the discussion area!
The Netgear device is not compatible with Apple's WDS. Therefore there is no way to use your AirPort Express (AX) to wirelessly extend the range of the Netgear.
You could run an Ethernet cable from the Netgear to the AX. Then the AX would create a wireless network at it's location which would be an extension of the Netgear's network.

  • SKY Router and Airport Express

Can I use an Airport Express to wirelessly extend my Sky router wifi to another part of my hose, currently getting a poor signal.
    If so how?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, no. The AirPort Express can only "extend" the wireless signal from another Apple router....as far as we know.

  • Remote speakers via Airport Express no longer working on one iTunes instance

I have iTunes on my iPhone, Windows desktop, and Windows laptop. At one time they all connected to my Airport Express with remote speakers attached. At some point, after a version upgrade, my laptop no longer sees the remote speakers while the other devices work fine. I can connect to the Airport Express from the laptop, there is no connectivity issue. I can even use the Apple Utility to read/change the settings.
How can I get the remote speakers working again?
    Thanks, Andrew

    Hello Andrew,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with AirPlay through iTunes on your laptop.  I found an article with things you can check when you are not able to AirPlay.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "If the AirPlay icon doesn't appear" in the article below, but this step specifically stands out to me for the situation you described:
Temporarily disable firewalls (both network and local) and security software. Security software and firewalls may block ports that AirPlay uses to stream content. You can often resolve issues with security software by updating, correctly configuring, or uninstalling security software.
You can find the full article here:

  • Aiport Extreme and Airport Express are not working together with DSL

My 2wire modem failed and I have replaced it with a basic actiontec dsl modem. I have my airport extreme connected to the actiontec via ethenet cable. All is working. Internet access through the actiontec is working and internet access through the extreme is working. What I cannot for the life of me remember how to do is get my express to work as a range extender for airport extreme.
The extreme is set up in Ethernet not PPPoE mode which might be the issue, but I can't remember the right settings (IP ranges, etc) if I set it up in PPPoE mode.
Net - my network that was working DSL modem to Extreme to Express as a range extender no longer works at the Express end. And don't even get me started about AT&T tech support. Help smart guys/girls out there - I know this is something simple that I should have written down when I first set up my network...

    Good People,
I have an Airport Extreme serving as my wireless router with an external hard drive connected to it.  I also have an Airport Express in another room connected to a stereo for Airplay.  Neither can be found on the Airport Utility (v5.5.3), but wireless internet still works.  This happens often, with both reappearing in Airport Utility for short amounts of time periodically.
I've once had the same problem.
The reason for that issue is the frequency (radio band) hopping of the station.
    On your AP-Extreme
    Enter the manual setup
Disable Guest Network if not desperately needed
Set a dedicated name for the 5GHz wireless (wireless -> wireless options)
Eventually change the radio mode (if no 802.11b/g systems in your home) to "only 802.11n (5GHz) - only 802.11n (2.4GHz)" by holding down the option key *alt* while clicking on the drop down.
    On your Mac
    Disable (switch off) wireless
Enter system configuration -> network -> wireless
Uncheck "Ask to join new networks"
Enter advanced options and check that your wireless name is in the first position of the list. If not, drag it with the mouse to the first position.
    Click apply
Join your wireless again and try to connect to the 5GHz name (SSID) because the 5GHz will improve the connection speed of your Mac remarkably.
Eventually you might change the settings on the Express too.
Check the location of the AP-Extreme.
It should NOT be placed: On the floor, in a corner, behind furniture, near metal objects, life high voltage wire or cordless phone bases.
It should be placed: As high as possible (up on a shelf or ceiling mounted) with a maximum line of sight to all stations, even thru walls.
If your home situation allows that, try to use the 5GHz band only. If you own a iPhone this must use the 2.4GHz radio.

  • Linksys WAG120N and Airport Express - Does this work ??

    Hi,
    I just replaced my Linksys WAG54G by a WAG120N modem-router.
I still have a problem with my Airport Express.
Everything was working fine with the WAG54G but since I'm using the WAG120N I always got the same problem.
After switching OFF-ON the Airport Express, I can only see it during a few minutes in the Airport Utility. After this, it disappears (until next reboot, etc.).
I've used the same setup/config for my modem-router (compared to the old one).
    Firmware has been upgraded.
I've completely re-configured the Airport Express.
    I've re-installed the Airport Utility.
I've also tried to use other channels, etc.
When I'm using the WAG54G, I do not have any problem !
Is this WAG120N finally compatible with the Airport Express ?
I'm really needing some help (before bringing it back to the vendor and selecting another model) !
    Please, it's urgent !
    Thks

Yes it is visible during a few minutes when I switch it off-on.
I can then access the config and change some parameters but after those +/- 5 minutes it disappear from the Airport List.
... and this is also true when you have the AX directly connected to your iMac via Ethernet?
I just want to be sure that the AX itself is not potentially fault.
When joined to another wireless network, of course, it will be dependent on the "stability" of that network. One other thing that might be possible is if you have the new Linksys configured for any special type of mode. One that I can think of is called "burst" mode. Another is wide-channel mode for the 2.4 GHz band. Neither of these are supported by the AX and may be a reason that it keeps dropping the connection.
Finally, were both routers purchased in your country and are made to operate there? I've seen this problem before when, for example, an individual buys a router, let's say, to be used in Japan and tries to operate it in Europe.

  • Airport Express no longer works in "Enterprise Arrangement" Long

This is going to be somewhat long, so bear with me as I will try to be as detailed and complete as possible. I just was hung up on by Apple Technical Support after Michael waited until 6:01pm PDT so I could not call back, so any help would be appreciated.
I have three airport express base-stations that are arranged as follows:
    1. Living Room - connects to my cable modem and iTunes to send music to the stereo.
    2. Kitchen - extends the airport signal so that it covers the back yard and is connected to a USB printer.
    3. Den - extends the airport signal to cover the bedrooms and is connected to iTunes for the den stereo.
The three units are connected via WDS in a very simple setup that took about five minutes to complete via Setup Assistant and some minor alterations in Airport Utility. The entire system functioned perfectly for over eight months until today when the Kitchen unit was no longer communicating to the printer and could not be accessed using Airport Utility. It would only "flash amber" after attempting numerous resets and even factory default resets. So, what to do -- thinking that the Airport unit had given up the ghost (I had one fail some time ago), I called apple support under my AppleCare plan.
The first representative (Chris) was very helpful and worked with me to try to reset the unit. When he could make no progress, I was passed along to a "product specialist," Michael, who tried very dilligently to explain from the beginning that my arrangement was far too complicated for basic support and that I had to buy an enterprise service contract in order to solve my problem. We spoke briefly and I assured him that I would accept whatever help that he could provide, as I felt that the particular base station had some malfunction.
We spent the better part of ninety minutes resetting the problematic (Kitchen)base-station to no avail. Finally he offered the following solution: "if all you want is to use it as a print server, we can set it up on it's own network." I said that that was not what I wanted, but thought we could try it as a possible workaround solution. After a few minutes of tinkering he had me set up a new network that only served as a print server. No longer did I get the range-expansion of my previous arrangement, and I have to switch the entire network from the airport menu in order to print. I can no longer print and surf the net or print and listen to music. He felt that this was an acceptable solution and tried to tell me that he and I "agreed to disagree" about this being a solution.
I explained to Michael that this was very "un-apple-like" in it's application and that there had to be something wrong with the base-station as it continues to "flash amber" rather than going to solid green. He reiterated his "agree to disagree" statement and said that my setup was too complicated for basic support. I offered to turn off the Den base-station to bring about an "acceptable level of support complexity." To this, Michael became very testy and proceeded to spend a minute or so explaining why I could not be helped and then hung up on me.
After being disconnected at 6:01pm PDT I then unplugged the Den base-station and simplified the system to what apple will support and still the problem persists: the Kitchen base-station will not join an existing network and run the USB printer at the same time. It can do one or the other, but when setup to do both, it consistently "flashes amber" and is inaccessible to Airport Utility - attempts to connect to the Kitchen base station through Airport Utility are met with the Spinning Beach Ball of Death and eventually with an error message : Airport Utility is unable to recognize the network.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions, but I'm afraid that I have an Airport Express paperweight.
I'll try again with Apple in the morning, also, but would like to solve this tonight if possible.
    Thanks in advance,
    Field
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Airport Express 6.03

I called AppleCare this morning and Sean helped me out in a huge way. In all of my attempts, I had not done a factory-default reset on the main base station and apparently some sort of endless loop had occurred between those two stations. Sean was very helpful and patient with me, but now the system is working as promised. Moral of this story is if a factory default rest doesn't help on the "problem" base station, try resetting all of the units.

  • My airport express no longer works with my network

The airport utility does not recognize my airport express. It was suggested to download Airport utility 5.6.1 but that is no longer compatible with my OS X 10.7.4. Even my iphone sees it but then crashes when it trys to do something with it.

It's an easy mistake to make, but AirPort Utility 5.6.1 will only run on Snow Leopard and Leopard machines.
If you want to use the previous version of AirPort Utility, you need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
It might be a good idea to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Express and then start over to reconfigure the device. To do this....
Power off the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first and keep holding it in for an additional 9-10 seconds as you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow it 45 seconds or so to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
The Express provides a default wireless network with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. Make sure that your computer is logged on to this network first....no password is required.....then open AirPort Utility and it will have a good chance to recognize the Express.

  • HELP:  Keep losing connection to router, bought airport express can't work

My macbook Pro keeps losing it's connection to my router in the room in my office at home. My boyfriend's £300 laptop though has no trouble, and has never been disconnected, no matter where in the house he's used it.
The router we use is an old Belkin router which also is a modem. I went to PC World told them the problema nd asked if buying an actual Apple router would be more compatible with my mac. So I bought the airport express but as I see it, that seems to just be a router, I also need a modem to actually connect to the internet...so I am confused really. I thought if I bought the airport I wouln't need the belkin router any more but it seems I do.
At the moment, I connected the airport to the router via ethernet and I think it is extending the network or something. I don't think that's right though, and I wonder if someone could talk me through the right steps to get my macbook continously connected to either the router with the airport or the airport, or whatever else, I am mystified by everythning and don't know what to do

    Hi Nicola,
You don't need the Airport Express and Macs can connect to Belkins just fine - I've had several myself. It might be that the Belkin is so old that it is using an ancient form of wireless encryption or having problems with IPv6, we'll look at that. But first, take the Airport Express back to PC World as it not really helpful here.
If it is an old Belkin, it might be having problems with something called IP v6.
From the Apple Menu, Choose System Preferences then Network
Make sure Airport is selected then choose Advanced
Click TCP/IP at the top and under Configure IPv6 choose Off
Configure IPv4 should be set to Using DHCP
    Click OK then Apply
It is possible that the Belkin is having problems talking to your Mac because of the wireless encryption mode, but try that first.

  • Linksys router and Airport express

I need to add a AX as a router to a Linksys router, so I can add a guest network on the AX.. The Linksys router is wired only.. Can this be down and how?

try eliminating a hop. instead of connecting to the router, connect to the Express, assuming it is setup to act as a remote base station.
if you are connected to the router via wireless, to reach the AEX, you are having to go thru the router first, then to the AEX. A direct connection to the AEX will reduce ping times, etc, thus possibly providing a more stable connection to attached speakers.

  • Just upgraded to Lion and MS Word no longer works

Not only does Word not work, but I can't even open a word doc in Pages.

What version of Word do you have?
If it is Word 2004, that is no longer supported. It is coded for PowerPC which has been dropped with Lion.
What version of Word were the files created with?
I know Pages always opens any Word files that I am sent.

  • AirMac Extreme and Airport Express not working with Netgear N Router?

I've been using an AirMac Extreme (old model) as a wireless router, and Airport Express for it's airtunes functionality (conected to my Hi-Fi).
These used to work fine, and both would show up in my Airport Utility on my Macs.
I've now just upgraded to a 50MG broadband contract, and the engineer gave me a Network router as my old AirMac Extreme couldn't handle that bandwidth.
When I connected my AirMac Extreme to my Netgear router I then got conflicts, sometimes it wouldn't show up, and it really slowed down my wireless signal. As a result the contractor for my broadband recommended I disconnect my Air Mac Extreme from the router. Speeds went up for the internet, but now I can't get my airtunes to work.
What I want to know is can I just use my Netgear to transmit the broadband signal so I get maximum internet speeds, but then have my AirMac Extreme and Airport Express connected so that I can still listen to my itunes wirelessly?
Ideally I'd like this to all be set up so that I could be conected to the internet through the Netgear wirelessly and listen to my itunes through the Airport Express at the same time.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am sorry that I don't have a definitive answer but I also have Windows computers and I have "inherited" some older Apple devices from my son and am trying to learn about them so in addition to searching this group,  I "Googled" "1st generation airport express" and it listed many specific posts in this group - I read them all and they might answer your question - good luck
