Upgrade OEL 4.8 to Oracle Linux OL 5.4 on a Live System using Yum

I have a remote server with my oracle 10g databases running on it.
The OS Version is OEL 4 update 8
Need to upgrade it to OEL 5 update 4.
Can I do it through yum.
I need to do it remotely. Please suggest the steps.
Cold backup taken for the database.

Upgrading from one major release version to another is not supported and you cannot use yum to perform the task.
http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Installation_Guide/ch-upgrade-x86.html
Oracle Linux is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which does not support in-place upgrades between any major versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. A major version is denoted by a whole number version change. For example, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 are both major versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In-place upgrades across major releases do not preserve all system settings, services or custom configurations. Consequently, Red Hat strongly recommends fresh installations when upgrading from one major version to another.

    what the diff betwenn OEL5, OEL6 EL5UEK, EL6UEK, i'm lost.
    Oracle Linux kernel appear as UEK ?
    I just go to edelivery and found theses download :
    1) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 for x86_64 (64 Bit)     V37084-01     3.5G
    2) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 Boot iso image for x86_64 (64 bit)     V37088-01     197M

    what the diff betwenn OEL5, OEL6 EL5UEK, EL6UEK, i'm lost.There is no OEL, just OL. :) Oracle Linux 5 (OL5) and Oracle Linux 6 (OL6) are completely different major versions of Oracle Linux. Each of those has two kernels, the Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK) or the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK).
    Oracle Linux kernel appear as UEK ?Yes.
    I just go to edelivery and found theses download :
    1) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 for x86_64 (64 Bit)     V37084-01     3.5GThis is the complete install DVD, which includes both the RHCK and UEK as well as most of the packages available for OL6.
    2) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 Boot iso image for x86_64 (64 bit)     V37088-01     197MThis is a small bootable image that uses the RHCK during install but only contains the installation program, but none of the packages. You need to have the contents of the ISO from (1) available somewhere on your network.
    3) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 UEK Boot ISO image for x86_64 (64 bit)     V37090-01     196MThis is a small bootable image that uses the UEK Release 2 kernel during install but only contains the installation program, but none of the packages. You need to have the contents of the ISO from (1) available somewhere on your network. This image also has btrfs support during installation, something that (1) and (2) do not.
    If I build a server with the 1) what will be the result of a uname -a ?The default kernel is 2.6.39-400.17.1.el6uek, but it will also install the RHCK 2.6.32-358.el6.

    How to Install Weblogic on oracle linux 6 without GUI?
    thanks.

    You could use the X Forwarding solution provided by Dude!. However if you like to install in console mode, which is simple as the GUI installation, except that you would have to type the values yourself, like middleware home and Java home and so on.
    Here's a sample on one of our test machines, although we use Solaris, but it's pretty much the same on Linux too:
    java -jar -d64 wls1036_generic.jar
    connect /tmp/.X11-unix/X0: Connection refused
    Unable to instantiate GUI, defaulting to console mode.

  • Installing 11gR2 (linux.zseries64) on oracle linux 5 guest system failed

    Dear experts,
    I decided to post a detailed thread since it seems my last thread is totally forgotten. Hopefully, this thread could clarify my problem of installing oracle database 11.2.0.2 in oracle linux guest system in windows 7 host system. Sorry about that.
    I installed oracle linux 5 update 6 x86_64 bits guest system in my windows 7 host using oracle virtualbox 4.2.12 so that I can install oracle database 11.2.0.2 (linux.zseries64_11gR2_database_1of2.zip, linux.zseries64_11gR2_database_2of2.zip). The oracle database I downloaded has some functions which are not available in 11.2.0.1. These two disks are extracted in a shared folder.
    I followed the instructions in a guide to run the installation:
    # yum install oracle-validated
    It succeeded. and, I used uname -a to return this additional information:
    "Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.32-400.26.2.el5uek #1"
    Then I set these below:
    SELINUX=permissive
    mkdir -p /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1
    chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01
    chmod -R 775 /u01
    xhost + 127.0.0.1
    and, added something in .bash_profile:
    # Oracle Settings
    TMP=/tmp; export TMP
    TMPDIR=$TMP; export TMPDIR
    ORACLE_HOSTNAME=127.0.0.1; export ORACLE_HOSTNAME
    ORACLE_UNQNAME=DB11G; export ORACLE_UNQNAME
    ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle; export ORACLE_BASE
    ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/11.2.0/db_1; export ORACLE_HOME
    ORACLE_SID=DB11G; export ORACLE_SID
    PATH=/usr/sbin:$PATH; export PATH
    PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH; export PATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:/lib:/usr/lib; export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    CLASSPATH=$ORACLE_HOME/jlib:$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/jlib; export CLASSPATH
    Then, I set DISPLAY environment in terminal:
    export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0
    Finally, I logged into the guest system as a user, not root, to run the installation. However, I got the frustrating error message:
    [hsl@localhost database]$ ./runInstaller
    ./runInstaller: line 254: /media/sf_My_Share/Oracle/database/install/.oui: cannot execute binary file
    Can anybody please give some advices to fix the problem. The installation is very important to me. Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Need to demo Oracle Linux 6

    I need to demo Oracle Linux 6 in order to see if it will be a fit in our hosting environment. Unfortunately I cannot install updates or any packages that were not chosen during the installation process unless I pay for a support contract/machine.
    The main use is to try out the clustering for a High Availability Web/Database environment which would require a minimum of 3 servers. Are there demo licenses to allow for package updates/installs prior to purchasing the contract and wasting money on something that may not work?
    PS - No one in any call centre could answer this simple question and I was directed to this public forum to discuss a private Corporate purchasing inquiry.

    I need to demo Oracle Linux 6 in order to see if it will be a fit in our hosting environment. Unfortunately I cannot install updates or any packages that were not chosen during the installation process unless I pay for a support contract/machine.That is not quite true. Oracle Linux is free to download and free to use for any purpose. You can get the ISO's from http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux or from the http://public-yum.oracle.com YUM repository. You can install or remove RPM packages at will, any combination, any time.
    Oracle support (patches, updates, and such) does cost, Oracle does sell their expertise in this way.
    The way to engage Oracle is to ask Oracle Sales for a "proof of concept" arrangement. They can help you make sure your setup is valid, supported, and that your test is successful. Oracle support personnel do not get involved with licensing or evaluations, so no wonder you got no joy via that path.
    Go sales. Go early :)

  • Oracle Linux 5.10 32 bit install, X server won't start.

    Hello Everyone, I hope you are having a wonderful day.
    I just installed Oracle Linux 5.10 32 bit on a older windows pc that has 32 bit architecture. When I reboot it, it comes up and says "Failed to start the X Server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
    When ever it probes for the video card, its fails then reboots to this every time.
    What do I need to do at this point?

    I agree with Dude.
    Oracle Linux is a server distro. You are installing it on a client platform. You are expecting it to support client hardware and have, by default, the required drivers on hand to support that client hardware.
    I would think that the failure here is on your part, and not on Oracle Linux's part.
    Why are you not using Ubuntu instead? It is one of the most widely used Linux desktop clients, and has out-of-the-box support for an extensive range of client hardware (from h/w acceleration support for video adapters, to supporting video/web cams. touch pads, WiFi chipsets, etc).
    If you want to test drive Oracle Linux as a server platform on client hardware, consider virtualisation (like free VirtualBox).

  • Smart flash cache and Oracle Linux 6

    I can't use smart flash cache feature on Oracle database 11.2.0.3.0 I installed on Oracle Linux 6.
    I installed Oracle database 11.2.0.3.0 on Oracle Linux 6.1 and try to use smart flash cache feature,
    I got this error when I start database:
    ORA-00439: feature not enabled: Server Flash Cache
    ORA-01078: failure in processing system parameters
    My environment are:
    OS: Oracle Linux 6.1 (x86_64)
    Kernel: 2.6.32-100.34.1.el6uek.x86_64
    DB: 11.2.0.3.0
    Related parameter in pfile I used to start database to use smart flash cache feature,
    *.db_flash_cache_file='/d09/db_flash_cache/db_flash_file.raw'
    *.db_flash_cache_size=32G
    I have accomplished this on Oracle database 11.2.0.2.0 on Oracle Linux 5.5 before, I don't think new version of database cause the issue but I'm not sure is there any smart flash cache issue with the Oracle Linux 6.1?
    Note:
    I need to use Oracle Linux 6.1 instead of Oracle Linux 6.2 and can't updated the kernel to UEK2 because the SSD PCI-E card only support on this distro and kernel version.

    Hi;
    Oracle Enterprise Linux was changed to Oracle Linux, isn't ?
    Oracle stopped calling their Linux distro as "Oracle Enterprise Linux" since OEL5.5 or 5.6 (I'm not sure). Therefore, today there is Oracle Linux only? If so, I'm using OL6.1 also means OEL6.1, correct?
    But, If the doc really means Oracle Enterprise Linux only then should it means OEL5.5 or 5.6?AFAIK both refer to Oracle Linux.If somebody mention they have OEL6.1 or Oracle linux 6.1 than I accept it Oracle linux(Enterprise)

    I can't find php5-curl or php-curl in the Repository?You mean, how do you get cURL to work with PHP on Oracle Linux. If you just want cURL, install it:
    # yum install curlIf you are actually talking about cURL, the default php package in OL6 includes cURL support without any additional RPMs:
    $ php -i | grep cURL
    cURL support => enabled
    cURL Information => 7.19.7

    patches required to resolve the vulnerabilities described in CVE-2014-6271 and CVE-2014-7169 in Oracle linux 5 (x86) is "bash-3.2-33.el5_11.4.x86_64.rpm "
    from where i can get this patch, its not availible on support.oracle/patches !!
    Thanks,

    Your Oracle Linux system should be configured to automatically install packages either from the Unbreakable Linux Network or public-yum.oracle.com. You might want to ask your Linux sysadmin for assistance if your servers aren't already configured for updates.
    You can also check Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of the Oracle Linux Administrator's Guide for more details on using ULN or public-yum: Oracle® Linux (it's for OL6 but the concepts are the same for OL5).

  • Manually Download Oracle Linux 6 Repo

    Hello,
    Is there a site or method in which I can manually download the entire oracle linux 6 repo and its updates from http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL6/
    I want to be able to burn the updates to a dvd. I do not want the servers I have to connect to the internet outside of my company's intranet.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    This works very well for me: https://github.com/kikitux/public-yum-downloader
    It creates your own local repository rather than DVDs.

  • Oracle Linux and Java 7u10

    Hi all,
    I installed Oracle Linux Server 6.3 selecting "software Development System" (java 1.6.0 comes with it).
    but I need to use Java 1.7
    So I downloaded jdk-7u10-linux-x64.rpm
    when I try to install it, I get the following error.
    Unpacking JAR files...
         rt.jar...
    Error: Could not open input file: /usr/java/jre1.7.0_10/lib/rt.pack

    Error: Could not open input file: /usr/java/jre1.7.0_10/lib/ext/localedata.pack
    I can't uninstall java 1.6 because other rpm uses it.
    Can someone tell me what the "proper" way to install Oracle Linux and Java 1.7 should be?
    OR is there a Oracle Linux Server 6.4 coming out soon with Java 1.7 as its default package set ;-)
    thanks in advance,

    3. Copy the following file to your Oracle Linux server (SFTP):
    <pre>
    jdk-7u10-linux-x64.rpm
    </pre>
    4. Login as root and use the YUM utility to install the RPM package.
    <pre>
    # yum install ./jdk-7u10-linux-x64.rpm
    </pre>
    5. Register the new installed java version, then change your default Java:
    <pre>
    # alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_10/bin/java 2
    # alternatives --config java
    </pre>
    Display your default Java version:
    <pre>
    # java -version
    java version "1.7.0_10"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_10-b18)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.6-b04, mixed mode)

    I want to upgrade my OS from official repository on Primary and Standby Servers. And I have a question:
    Will I have a problem with my RDBMS after upgrade OS (e.g. statuses in dba_registry will become INVALID)?

    It's Ok.
    Now I have:
    $ cat /etc/issue
    Oracle Linux Server release 6.4
    No any problem.

    as you see all checks passed OK, but the whole install failed. What could be wrong? And what is XML parser init: error 54?

  • OAS upgrade 10.1.3.5.0 (Oracle Linux)

    I have installed OAS 10.1.3.0 (32 bit) on Oracle Linux 5 (64 bit) successfully. But when I am trying to upgrade/install to OAS 10.1.3.5.0 (Patchset 5), the installation is struck/hanged at 13%. I am using SOA suite 10g installer. There is enough free space on disk -- 32gb and installation folder has required permissions. I donot understand why is it struck at "spawning '//scratch/chetpati/database/oracle/product/10.1.3.1/OracleAS_1/dsa/bin/getias.sh'"
    Please refer to the snapshot link - http://i50.tinypic.com/2e4m3k2.jpg . It is like that for 2 hours.
    The complete installation Log is here -- http://pastebin.com/udM2xiJF .
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chetan.

    Finally I found the answer.
    for a strange reason the classloader in release 3 was not able to find the BSF provider although the bsf.jar was inside the applib.
    Thus I have set the
    System.setProperty("org.apache.xalan.extensions.bsf.BSFManager","class to load");
    Could someone explain me why the application server was not able to locate the class although the iAS release 2 was working fine ?
    Thank you.
