Upgrade of academic version possible in Europe

I bought Aperture in Europe with an academic discount in November 2005, when it did still cost $500 without the discount in the U.S.. I paid 399 francs (my local currency), the full version then was probably 699 or 799 francs. I later got a voucher over 250 francs.
I now bought an upgrade to Aperture 2.0 for 139 francs (after having called and asked whether it would work). And it works fine.
In total, I therefore paid 290 francs and now have a full version of Aperture 2.0. I bought a 299 francs iPod nano with the 250 francs voucher, paying only (299/1.076 - 250)*1.076 = 30 francs for it. By saving another 20 francs in taxes, I in fact only paid 270 francs for my two versions of Aperture.
(Using todays exchange rate, that is only $260, including taxes. Using the Nov 2005 exchange rate, it is more like $205.)

some apple stores in Europe will sell a RETAIL version at EDU prices
it is rare but it happens
you got lucky

  • Upgrading from Academic version to Regular versions

I am a student right now and I am taking a class to learn how to use my new DSLR. I will probably never be a professional photographer but plan on avidly pursuing this hobby. I was thinking of purchasing an academic version of Photoshop CS3.
    My question is:
When a new version of photoshop comes out (for example CS4) will I be able to purchase the upgrade version if I own the academic version of cs3 or will I have to purchase the full version?
Or in other words are the academic versions upgradable?
I spent alot of time on the adobe web site trying to find an answer but it just sends you in circles and circles without ever answering any questions. frusterating really. I could not even locate an e-mail address of anyone to answer a question.

    > Or in other words are the academic versions upgradable?
Yes. CS4, BTW, is right around the corner. You can find out all about it
    on 9/23.

  • Client wants to upgrade his 'academic' version?

Client wants to upgrade his FCP Studio 5.1.4 to 7.x, but he's got an Academic version.  Which Apple Store says they don't upgrade.  Does this mean he has to buy a complete new Academic version?
My assumption is yes.  But I'm always wary of my assumptions.  I'm going to see if I can find the 'Academic' price listed somewhere...

Ya know... here is what it says in the license agreement... (though this is from the apple's website's list of EULAs and not specifically from a EULA from any Academic version you may have bought (the apple website says that too)) -- (wow!  that was small!!)
http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/finalcutstudio2.pdf  Do a Command-F and search for academic... comes up 9 times the three below and again in two other languages.  Does anyone really know where it says you CAN'T upgrade academic versions??  Even if you still fall under the academic umbrella?
Academic Copies: If the Apple Software package has an academic label or if you acquired the Apple Software at an academic discount, you must be an Eligible Educational End User to use the Apple Software. "Eligible Educational End Users" means students, faculty, staff and administration attending and/or working at an educational institutional facility (i.e., college campus, public or private K-12 schools).

  • Academic version of Aperature, Same as Standard?

I have the ability to purchase the Academic version of Aperature which affords substantial savings over the regular version. Is it the same version as the regular and can it be updated. I have heard remarks about an inability to upgrade the Academic version.

By normal patterns of upgrade pricing, the Academic version saves money through two or three major upgrades. ($150 * 3 < $300 + $100 + $100. But of course there are no guarantees what the upgrade prices will be.)
But this moment is special: with Leopard out there seems to be reason to expect version 2 within months if not weeks. Not a good time for the one-shot deal of the Academic version. That's what I bought, and I'll have to pay out the same $150 (presumably) when v2 comes out. But meanwhile I've had about a year with version 1 (1.1, 1.5, 1.5.6), and I will expect to get at least two to four years out of the next one, so I'm not losing money until perhaps 2011--too far off to worry about.
So if you can wait, go for the Academic when v2 hits the stands. It might possibly be so close that for new purchasers of 1.5 would be a free upgrade, though I wouldn't count on that.

  • Did I luck out with the academic version?

I purchased what I thought was an academic version of Aperture back in November 2007. I paid $149, 50% off the $299 price. I when in to the Apple store and picked up a copy of Aperture 1.5 off the self and asked for the student discount and got it. I did not know the academic version had it's own box.
The other post on this topic seems to state we cannot upgrade the academic version, but at startup I do not see the word Academic on the splash screen. Did I luck out somehow? Am I not looking in the right place? Can I tell by looking at the serial number whether or not I have the academic version?

I bought the educational version in November 2005 when the full version was sold for $499 (I think in my local currency it was sold for 699, I got it for 399, or 429.32 incl. taxes, in my currency) and I later got a voucher.
My 8-page booklet says Aperture 1.0 RETAIL, neither my splash screen nor the About window mention the work Educational. Is it possible that only 1.5 shipped in different versions? And does this mean I can upgrade for $99?

  • Academic Version After Graduation

    Hello,
Just a quick question that I could not find the answer for anywhere else. I believe I already know the answer but I just want to make sure.
I purchased the Academic version of Final Cut Studio during my sophomore year of college for use in student films. I am graduating this spring and plan to start a production company part-time. Do I need to purchase a Commercial version of Final Cut Studio to use when I charge clients for work? (Another way to ask that is "Can I use my Academic version of Final Cut Studio for use with client projects?")
I know I cannot upgrade my Academic version to the Commercial version and have to buy it at the full retail price. I assume that I would need to buy the Commercial version before I can start charging clients, but I want to make sure.
If anyone knows the answer please enlighten me, thanks!

I don't recall anything in the licensing agreement of the last few versions that prohibits the licensee from earning money with the software.

  • Is it possible to upgrade from an Academic version of Logic 7.1?

I just purchased a new mac 8-core, went on installing Logic studio upgrade, but when it asks for the xskey it says 'this xskey is not elegible, please see upgrade requirements'. i've been using that key for many years and I don't understand whuy it's not working...Could anyone help me, please? I can't even find a support mail where to send my question to...

If it's an academic version, or a not-for-resale version, then these are not upgradable - ie, to move to the next full version of Logic, you can't just buy the upgrade, you have to buy the full version.
It's common knowledge that Academic versions of Apple's ProApps are not upgradable.
    If in doubt, contact Apple.

  • I'm trying to upgrade 9.0 academic version to 9.1.7 to use on a new MacBook pro.  When I try to do incremental upgrades to 9.0.1 or 9.0. it says I don't need them.  When I try to upgrade to 9.1.7 it says there is no version eligible to upgrade.

I'm trying to upgrade Logoc Pro 9.0 academic version to 9.1.7 to use on a new MacBook pro.  When I try to do incremental upgrades to 9.0.1 or 9.0.2 it says I don't need them.  When I try to upgrade to 9.1.7 it says there is no version eligible to upgrade. This all on the older MacBook currentlu running 9.0.  But I need to upgrade to 9.1.7 to transfer it over tp the new MacBook w/ Retina display.

I think I just got it.  I had the actual Logic Pro.app in a folder called Logic Pro inside the applications folder.  When I moved the actual app out of the folder and into applications it worked.  I am in the process of updating now.  However it seems a little strange because that's how it installed from the discs - into a folder named Logic Pro within the applications folder.  I would never have figured that out on my own.  So thanks for those who posted solutions to other users similar requests.

  • Logic pro 7 academic version upgrade

I think this question has been asked multiple times in the previous posts so sorry if that is true. I was wondering if I could update my logic pro 7 academic version to logic pro 8? It says on the box that academic versions are not eligible for upgrades so I'm holding off from buying the upgrade to logic pro 8. So do I have to buy the whole complete logic pro 8 package?
    Bye for now

Here is my story... I bought Logic Pro 7 Academic at the beginning of '05 when it was still 500 dls. Later I bough the update to 7.2. for 50 dls. Last week I went to the Apple store and bought the Logic Pro 8 upgrade for 200 dls because the sales rep told me I could upgrade from the academic version. I don't know what to do with the upgrade I bought now that I know I can't use it, plus I already opened the box. With all the money invested in this software Apple should get me a retail copy of LP8 for free! (in my dreams)...

  • Academic Version Upgrade

We own a business, and I have a question of legality.
We have an Academic version of MacroMedia Studio MX. We want to know if we are able to use that Academic version to upgrade into the Adobe CS3 Design Premium non-academic version. Again, this would be for commercial use -
Will Adobe even let us activate the upgrade of CS3 DP off of an academic version of Studio MX?

  • FYI on trying to upgrade academic version of LE7

Bought a copy of LE7 2 years or so ago. Didn't realize it was an academic version. Installed the software and went on my merry way without looking at the box again. Today, my LE8 upgrade arrives and surprise, it won't accept my LE7 academic serial number. Wish Apple had advertised this fact a little louder on the LE website.
Just a friendly warning to anyone else who has an academic version to save their time and get the full LE8 instead of the upgrade.

Which version of Mac OSX do you have?
Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the last ever release for Mac OSX 10.3.9 and earlier versions.

  • Can't upgrade to CC from CS6 Academic version

Currently I am using CS6, which I bought as an academic package in Japan.
And I'm trying to upgrade from CS6 to CC, using complete discount plan since I have CS6.
I tried to upgrade but the serial number wasn't recognized. Is it because mine is academic version?

  • Is it OK to sell my academic version of CS5 Production Premium?  May I give it away for free?

    Hello,
I bought this while attending classes on Premiere Pro at the local college and am still attending there.
I would now like to work with CS5.5 because of some of the cool improvements and intend to buy a new copy at the campus bookstore.
I want to play by the book.  I have a question and do not know the answer.
May I sell my old copy?   May I give it away?
    Thanks!
ALSO, IS IT POSSIBLE TO MERELY UPGRADE TO CS5.5 FROM THIS ACADEMIC VERSION?
    Clueless in San Francisco

Matt (aka Clueless in San Francisco),
I'll answer your last question first. Yes, you may upgrade from the academic version of Production Premium CS5 to the full commercial version of Production Premium CS5.5. Please call Adobe Customer Support who can assist you in making this purchase. Note that there are no upgrades from one academic version to the next given the exceptionally low price of these academic versions to start with.
Whereas you may sell / transfer the license for non-academic / student versions of Adobe products, under no circumstances can you sell or transfer licenses for academic / student versions.
Also, once you upgrade any version of an Adobe product, whether from one version to the next or from academic / student to full commercial version, the license for the old software effectively no longer exists other than that you may continue to use the older software on the same system that you have installed the newer version as a means of transitioning to the newer version.
