Upgrade of iOS 3.1.2 to latest iOS on 3GS handset

Hi,
My current iOS version at iPhone 3GS is 3.1.2 (i know, which is very outdated). When I connect it to iTunes, it ask me to upgrade to iOS 6.*.* (now onwards it should say 7.*).
I know my phone is complete outdate (poor me), but still would like to know can a iPhone 3GS be upgraded to latest version of iOS.
I gone through few of the links - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972  .. But none of them talk about 3GS.
Thanks.

iOS 7 does not support the 3GS.
The latest iOS version that you can install on the 3GS is 6.1.3.

I just upgraded my iPhone 5s yesterday to the latest iOS version. Today, I can't get the facebook app on my phone to even open. Any ideas?  I already tried shutting the phone off and restarting, but it didn't change anything. Thanks for any suggestions that will help.

Do you have the latest FaceBook app version installed?
If so, try a reset which is similar to a computer restart and is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.

  • How to upgrade to iOS 8.1 on original iPAD

I have an original iPad.  The current OS is 5.1.1.  When I try to upgrade using the latest version of iTunes on my PC using the "Check for Update" function, it says that "the version of the iPad software (5.1.1) is the current version" and doesn't offer me to upgrade.  Is it possible to ugrade to iOS 8 on the original iPad?

No, it is only possible to upgrade to iOS 5.1.1 on the original iPad.

  • Upgraded to iOS 6; No WiFi on iPhone 4S and now iPad 3

Upgraded to iOS 6 earlier today at work. Used their WiFi to update. Came home and now no WiFi. I've tried changing the SSID and changed from WEP to WPA and then back to WPA. After doing all those changes still not connecting.
I know some topics have said to delete the Safari history or whatever. Tried that and that didn't work.
I just updated my iPad 3 to iOS 6 and now it won't connect to my WiFi. I have a Netgear WGT624 v3 with the latest firmware. This is an older router but ALL my devices have worked with no issues until this update was released and install on 2 of my devices.
I still have an iPad, iPad 2, 2 other iPhone 4's and a 3GS to update and I'm not doing that until I have my WiFi working on the iPhone 4S and iPad 3.
What is the problem Apple? Its going to be weeks before they fix this issue.

Found a solution to my problem.
I'm using the Netgear WGT624 v3 router with the latest firmware. I searched online for Netgear issues with iOS 6 and found this link.
    http://www.davejackson.com/life/cant-access-wifi-with-ios-6-on-iphone-with-netge ar-wgt624v3-fix/
Basicallt I downgraded the firmware of my router and now the WiFi works. Just a temp fix until Apple address the issue. Then I will try to upgrade back to the newest firmware.

  • Wont let me install facebook, facebook messenger or spotify apps, i use to have facebook messenger and facebook app on my ipod and now its saying i have to upgrade to ios 6, but it wont let me upgrade!!!!!!

i use to have facebook, facebook messenger on my ipod touch, and recently i upgraded to ios and now it wont let me reinstall the apps, says i need to upgrade to atleast ios 6, but it wont let me ugrade to ios 6 says it has no upgrades, that the current version is the newest!!! this is crap... how can something work and then now it doesnt work when its suppose to be improved??
    Any suggestions would help

You can likely download the last compatible version by:
Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)
App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club
App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app
You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

  • I can't find a way to preserve app data while upgrade from iOS 3 to 4

During the weekend I am helping one family member to upgrade the iOS on her iPhone 3G from 3.1 to the latest available, 4.2.1, and I ran into a problem which mades me frustrated.
Before the upgrade, iTunes warns me "Upgrading to iOS 4.2 will delete all of the apps and media......" and suggest me that I should apply this update on teh compuetr where I syn apps, music, videos, and photos from.
The problem is, this user has  never sync it with a computer. She had been using this phone for over 2 years, she has 5 pages worth of apps, and of course she would have data in some apps.   She has no problem letting me make my computer as THE computer that her iPhone syncs to, and I even created a new iTunes profile for her, authorized her Apple ID, and transferred her purchase into iTunes.  But when I check "Syn App" on, it tells me that all apps and data on the iPhone will be replaced with the data in the iTunes library. Well, I know what this is about, this is like.. one way overwrite type of sychronization.
But when I looked over everything again,  it seems like in the iOS3 era, if you don't sync your apps with a computer on day 1 before you start using the phone, you permanately lose the ability to backup the apps' data and restore to another device?  I like to emphasize again that my focus is in data, not apps, I know I could transfer purchases from phone A to iTunes to phone B, it's the inability of backing up data makes me frustrated.
Do I miss anything here?  Is there still a way I could upgrade this phone from iOS 3 to iOS4, without losing her app data?

iTunes is required to initially activate the phone. Back when the iPhone 3G was sold, you would take it out of the box and see a "Connect to iTunes" screen. She HAD to connect to a computer in order to begin using the phone. Does she remember what computer this was?

  • Why is iMessage splitting group conversations into multiple threads after upgrading to iOS 8?

After upgrading to iOS 8 my group messages keep getting split up into different threads. Everybody in the threads have iPhones and before upgrading they were all working and sending/receiving iMessages just fine.
Now I'll have 2-3 threads with the same contacts (using their same phone numbers, not another contact point like iCloud email, Apple ID, etc.). My phone sometimes recognizes that the group is the same because it will automatically name the group the same thing, but other times it just puts the names of the people in the "To" line. In addition, some of the threads won't let me send iMessage so I have to reply in one thread and receive messages in the other (I send iMessages in thread A but the replies from the same people come back in thread B, but if I try and reply in thread B I can only send text messages even though all contact info is the same).
Update after OS X Yosemite: After upgrading to Yosemite, my Messages app on my MacBook Pro is now splitting the threads as well. It used to be that the computer understood the contacts were the same so all messages should be under one thread and just my phone was having this issue, but the upgrade changed that.
I have tried signing in and out of iMessage, upgrading to the latest iOS, turning on and off my phone, starting new groups, only replying to certain groups, etc. but nothing has worked.
    Thanks!

Im having the same problem. This started with iOS 8 and Yosemite. Im in a group message with 10 people with and without iPhones. Currently have 9 threads and when ever a new person responds a new thread forms. they all have the same people but in a different order, that may be part of the reason why iMessage doesn't recognize them as the same conversation.
As I'm writing this post 3 new threads opened and other people with and without iPhones are mentioning the same problem
hope apple can fix this. VERY annoying

  • I have an iPod touch 4th generation and I can't upgrade to iOS 6.1.3 (or to any editions)

I have an iPod touch 4th generation running iOS 6.1, and my grandma's iPhone 4 could upgrade, so I thought I'd try it out on my iPod. I go to software update u set my system settings, and it doesn't do anything! It just stays still and says "Checking for Update." I pressed the home button and tried again, but the same error occurred. I do not have a computer, but I do have an Internet connection? Is there any way that I can upgrade my iOS to the latest edition without a computer? I cannot reset my iPod, and I have so much stuff on my iPod it'd take forever. Please help!

You can connect to any computer and do it but it is a lot of work. When you restore after following the following instructions and iPod will also be updated.

  • After upgrade to iOS 8, My ipad is getting shut down intermediately.

After upgrade to iOS 8, My ipad is getting shut down intermediately. Even while surfing net also it happens. Earlier I thought it may be due to any software/game which is not compatible. But it happens during surfing net on Safri. No option to move back to iOS 7.

    Hi BalajiPrusty,
If your iPad shuts down intermittently, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting - note: the article is for iPhones but this section is relevant to iPads as well.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • After the recent upgrade to ios 8 ipad air has no audio coming out

    HI
After the recent upgrade to ios 8 ipad air has no audio coming out

I had the same problem until tonight. Played with ring tones, do not disturb, volume, and everything else posted. What I found is that when you go to sounds/text tone, there are two types of tones in the scrolling menu. The top set of tones are for alert tones and the bottom set are ringtones. They are separated by a gray bar that states their purpose. Many of the tones are the same name. You need to set your text alert in the Ringtones and reminders, alarms, and such in alerts. The weird thing about this menu is when you go to sounds/ringtone the menu is reversed. Mine works in locked mode or unlocked now. I have an Iphone 6 8.1.2. My problem started after my latest OS upgrade. Hope this helps.

  • IPhone 5S "No Service" since upgrading to iOS 8.1.3

    Hi guys!
So ever since I've upgraded to iOS 8.1.3 yesterday I have not been able to get my iPhone 5S to connect to my network (Three). I have tried all the steps on Apple support website related to the issue including iPhone Restore, sadly to no avail. I have tested my SIM in a different phone (works just fine) and tested a different SIM in my phone (didn't work either), so I'm 99.9% certain the issue lies with the phone and not my service provider. The phone recognizes the carrier based on the SIM inserted so I guess it can read the SIM and it can find all networks available when you search for them manually, so the aerial is fine too. This to me screams a software issue but obviously I could be wrong. I bought the phone used and it is out of warranty so I guess Apple won't do much for me, however I find it hard to believe that the "upgrade" to the latest iOS and my phone's demise are purely coincidental. I can see this is a fairly common issue, does anyone know what the underlying cause actually is and any suggestions how to fix the thing?
    Thanks

    I had this issue with my iPhone5 on Verizon.  I just finished a call with Apple, here were the steps we took to correct the issue;
Connected phone to computer, opened iTunes
clicked on the phone icon in iTunes and selected Summary tab
    selected Restore iPhone
When asked, selected set up as new, not from a backup.  During this process iTunes found and downloaded new carrier settings
When this restore completed I had cell signal
    then restored from a backup

  • IPhone 5 Power Button flaky since upgrade to iOS 7

I never had any issues with the power/sleep button on my iPhone 5 in the past.  However, immediately after upgrading to iOS 7 I started having issues with the button not responding very well.  It can take numerous presses to get it to work, or sometimes it just works on the first try.  I have updated to the latest 7.0.1 and 7.0.2 but with no change in behavior.  I am fairly certain that there is some sort of issue or bug with iOS 7, and that it is not a hardware issue.
Has anyone else come across this problem, and if so, was there anything found that could possibly fix it (aside from restoring an old backup of the phone before it was upgraded to iOS7)?

The problem for me was litterally overnight.. fine before iOS 7.. problem showed up the day after the update. While it could be a coincidence, the general sluggishness of iOS 7 on my iPhone 5 and the timing is highly suggestive of an iOS 7 problem. My iPhone 5 used to feel so much snappier than my wife's 4S with iOS 6.. she didnt update.. and the difference between the two phones now just isnt there. Certain things are faster (well at least Safari) with iOS 7, but im kinda bummed that my phone is no longer as "snappy" as it was before the update.
Having been a Mac user since around 98, and being one of the first to have the Mac OS 10.. i am used to OS updates being an improvement (10 was buggy.. but got better fast.. even on my iBook 466SE).
I understand that with phones the hardware is making quantum leaps each year.. and you cant expect a phone to be able to handle an OS designed around what is esentially completely different hardware.. but a year-old phone that has the same processor as a new 5c should not feel sluggish.
I'm cool with progress.. and rather Apple make leaps in hardware capability.. and don't necessarily want them to get caught up in supporting legacy hardware.. but the 5 is not really legacy when Apple sticks to a 1 year upgrade cycle.

  • Non-factory Apps Disappearing Randomly After Upgrade to iOS 5.1

Hi all, I've had my iPad 2 for about 9 months.  Since upgrading to iOS 5.1, on two separate occasions, I've had all but the factory apps disappear from my iPad.  This happened randomly during the day, not during or immediately following a sync.  My most recent sync for my iPad was on 3/14, 6 days ago.  I had been using my iPad throughout the day, then unlocked it this evening and everything is gone except the factory apps, i.e. FaceTime, Messages, Reminders, etc.  All my media is still there, and all my settings are unchanged (email accounts still working fine, movies still there in the Videos app), but all downloaded apps are gone.  No games, none of my work apps, nothing.  This is the second time this has happened since I upgraded to iOS 5.1 about 2 weeks ago.  First time was the day after.  Last time I did a full wipe and restore, hoping it was a one time glitch.  I've done some searching, and the only other instances of people's apps disappearing that I've been able to find were related to syncing.  I have the latest iTunes, all software is patched and up to date.  I have syncing via WiFi disabled, as well, it only syncs via cable plugged into my home PC.
Hoping someone else has seen this or has some idea.
(My battery life is significantly reduced after the iOS upgrade as well, with no changes to settings or new apps.  I get a day or two of light use before I'm down to 10%.  I was at 30% in the morning when I put it in my bag, and it was dead when I took it out later that afternoon.  I used to get a good week between charges.)

If it's a first gen iPad, which I assume that it is if you've updated to iOS 5.1.1 as other models update to iOS 6+, then it doesn't have a camera on it and therefore doesn't have Camera or FaceTime apps.

  • I can't upgrade from IOS 6.0.1 to IOS 7.1.1. iPad says it has downloaded IOS 7.0.3 but cannot verify the installation. Cannot restore or update in iTunes either. Help please?

I can't upgrade from IOS 6.0.1 to IOS 7.1.1 on my iPad 2. iPad says it has downloaded IOS 7.0.3 but cannot verify the installation if I try and install it. It claims that I have lost internet connection, which I have not. I cannot restore or update the iPad in iTunes either, if I try to, I get an error message which says that I 'do not have permission to access the requested resource'. I am using the latest version of iTunes on Windows 8. I have tried putting the iPad in recovery mode and restoring it with iTunes, the result is the same.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    @Rudegar
Thanks for the reply, but I've been having this problem for well over a week. If it is a corrupt download, is there some way of deleting it from the iPad and getting a new one?
