Upgrade of underground cabling.

With no prior warning, 100 yards or so of our side of the street, including our address, is faced with  a day under siege by a team equipped with the noisiest toys available, from 09.00 on a Sunday morning until, so far, 14.30.
Much as the world will be made a more wonderful place by an enhanced data transmission infrastructure, it is no delight to begin your Sunday being rudely awoken by the grinding and crunching of industrial machinery without so much as a postcard throught the letterbox to warn us that this work has been scheduled.
Questioning the chief excavator tells us that this is being done on behalf of BT, who, having advised the council, are apparently under no further obligation to give advance notice.
Have I missed a corner of the local newspaper, or some soggy sign clinging to a lampost as my statutory notification?
Or is it just a question of maximising overtime opportunities for the cheery chaps and their diggers?

Hi
This work will be taking place by contractors for Openreach who install and maintain the external cabling network.
I suggest you contact them direct by following this link HERE// and picking the most suitable reason why you are complaining.

Many times my computer takes too long to connect to new website. I have wireless internet (time capsule) and I am running a pretty powerful real time financial work program at same time, what is the best solution? Upgrading speed from cable network? is it a hard drive issue? do I only need to "clean out" the computer? Or all of the above...not to computer saavy.  It is a Macbook Pro  osx 10.6.8 (late 2010).

Almost certainly none of the above!  Try each of the following in this order:
Select 'Reset Safari' from the Safari menu.
Close down Safari;  move <home>/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db to the trash; restart Safari.
Change the DNS servers in your network settings to use the OpenDNS servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Turn off DNS pre-fetching by entering the following command in Terminal and restarting Safari:

  • How much to upgrade my current cable plan to have CNBC, HBO?

Moved to customer service for best visibility.

I'm currently paying $99.70 for internet and cable. But the cable only include very few channels which doesn't have HBO, FX, CNBC or any other major good chaccels. I'm wondering how much doesn it cost me to pay to upgrade?

  • Problem with underground cable - engineer visit re...

I reported a fault on my line last week, and an Openreach engineer turned up on Friday and confirmed that the fault was in an undergound cable on public land, and not within the boundary of my property. There are two nearby BT access covers in the public footpath outside - apparently the line is ok from the house to the nearest box, and the fault is between that box and the next one.
According to the Openreach engineer, the next step would be for them to come out and trace the exact location of the fault (which wouldn't require access to my property), then the footpath would be dug up so that the cable could be renewed or repaired.
It appears that BT Retail has a different viewpoint to that of Openreach, as the fault summary on bt.com now says that an engineer visit is required. However, until the cable is repaired I haven't a clue what this is supposed to achieve that the first one didn't.
Is this a case of Openreach and BT Retail struggling to communicate properly with each other, or is there actually some point to having another engineer visit that I may have missed? Before I arrange to take yet time off work to wait for an engineer, I'd like to make sure that it's really necessary.

    The plot thickens...
Wife phoned to try to find out more, and during a rather frustrating phone call she was informed that the fault outside was fixed on Sunday morning, and they now want an engineer to come and check that it works up to the house. Plus the usual threat of a £129 charge. So we have an engineer booked to visit on Friday morning.
I do have a number of problems with the statements made by the individual that my wife spoke to:
    1. An Openreach engineer has already checked that the line is ok from the master socket to the BT "hole in the ground" located 12 metres away, on public land and not within the property boundary. He estimated that the fault in the cable was 15 metres away, between the nearest access point and the next one (which is about 16 metres away).
    2. I'd have thought that we'd have noticed someone digging up the tarmac on a Sunday morning, in view of the front window, but we didn't. Neither did we notice them filling in the hole afterwards. Perhaps Openreach employ silent (and invisible) contractors to dig up the roads at weekends.
    3. More importantly, the line is a dead as ever, and dialling it from a different line or a mobile always gets an engaged tone - this hasn't changed since the fault was reported to BT.
I'd certainly not be very happy with a £129 charge, particularly as if the problem is within our boundary the engineer that came last week should have found it. Hopefully Friday won't be a total waste of time, for me or for the Openreach engineer, but not holding out much hope at the moment as nothing seems to have changed since the first visit.
On the plus side, it's been quieter in the evenings as the telespammers haven't been able to get through for the past week or so!

  • Underground Cable Issue

    Hi there,
I'm relocating to a rural area in penrith. After BT changing installation dates I managed to get someone there to open up etc.
The engineer said (on 24th march) that there was a problem with the underground lines but didn't elaborate. I'm moving in on the 28th March but I assume this won't be fixed by this time.
Any ideas on the usual time frame for this kind of issue? (can't provide any more details im affraid!)
    Thanks in advance
    Steve

BT Called today to see if my phone line was now working (I'm currently relocating so can't check)
They said that they would need to know that the phone line is working before they sort out the broadband?
Would rather them sort the broadband out first!

  • Aluminium cable and Infinity

I'm not on Infinity yet, but the Infinity checker telles me I'll be due on 31st December! My question relates to the cable from the cabinet to my home. I am assuming that the fibre optic cable only goes to the cabinet. I believe (having spoken with an ex-BT engineer who was employed when my estate was being built) that the underground cabling is aluminium rather than copper and that aluminium is very poor when it comes to broadband - hence my diabolical speeds at the moment. What I would like to know is whether the aluminium cable will render the change to Infinity pointless. At the moment I get around 1.5mbps - and that only since BT upgraded the exchange. Does anyone have experience or knowledge of this?

Just as a guide. My line to the cab is aluminium (laid early 1980's). When I was having "issues" with my previous broadband, OR did some extensive testing. The loss to the cabinet was 9db, and then another 51db back to the exchange. So overall my line was around 60db loss. Add a noise margin of 15db onto this, and I was lucky to see 1 meg. The line to the cabinet was also very noisey, and so the DLM used to stick me at around 135k-160k for weeks on end, until I managed to convince someone to get it to re-train. Then I would get 1-3 megs, dropping to 1, and then back to sub 0.5megs.  I had lift and shift, etc, to no avail.
Moved to O2 LLU, and was getting a very respectful 3.5 megs with a NM of 3db (got lots of disconnects, but no DLM to stick its nose in and drop to a "stable" speed).
Now on Infinity, and I get 37.5 over ethernet (sometimes a bit more). Just great.
Using wireless (and "g" as well!), I get around 20 megs, which drops to around 15megs when everyone comes home and starts up. But, in reality, makes no difference to my internet use.
Very very pleased with the "uplift", and apart from problems which have beset the whole network over the last couple of weeks (not just BT), the speeds and stability have been wonderful. Can't fault it. Option 2, unlimited - brilliant.
Oh yes, the best bit, 10 megs upload, and I get about 9meg, is just great. If you move photos and music around (I use DropBox for sharing preliminary mixes of locally recorded music), then life is SO SO much better.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • IPod no longer works with car stereo since upgraded MBA & iTunes

My iPod classic has worked just fine connected to my car stereo since i bought it last june. I just bought a new Macbook Air (OS 10.7.3) & installed ITUNES 10.6.1. After I synched my ipod for the first time its recognised by the car but i get a "can't read data" message. I re-formatted my ipod but its exactly the same. Do you think its the upgrade- or the cable? Has anyone else found a bug with this version of Itunes or the OS? I have my doubts a cable would make the difference, and my old ipod nano that i haven't synched for a while works fine.

If standalone works fine, then, most likely the 30 pin connect may have some dirt or lint, prevent data transfer.
You can try to blow it clean, if you have a can of compressed air or gas.
Alternatively you can connect it to the car stereo and do the RESET, while connnected.as follows
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
The Reset sequence may send a signal to the Car stereo to do the right thing

  • E75 fails to upgrade firmware via USB

    Hi,
My Ovi suit tells me that there is a firmware upgrade to my E75. From 202.12.01 to
    211.12.01.
I have now tried at least 10 times to upgrade via USB cable but all of them fails before they even start to copy the firmware to the Phone.
I have tried through OVSuite, PCSuit and also with Nokia SW updatear stand alone but all fails with slightly different error messages.
Ovi suite 2.5.8se only tells me it fail because of a disconection withthe phone
PC Suit tells me that I can't connect the phone through an USB hub (which I haven't ).
The strange thing is that I can see that they are comminucation becasue both sw are able to identify my phone and also what FW I am using.
    What could be wong.
All the SW is that latest versions and I have disabled firewals + antivirus.
Also both my laptop and phone have fully charged batteries
    /MrG
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What exact version do you have *now* installed on your E75?
Do you know which product code you have?
    Have a look here:
    http://www.nokia.co.uk/support/product-support/device-software-update/can-i-update
Please note that the product code written on the paper label may not necessarily be the product code of your telephone. If you bought it from Nokia it probably is the same. In my case, I bought it from an online store in Germany and the internal product code was not the same as the one on the label.. which is suspicious, but anyway.

  • X-Fi I/O Upgrade Quest

I know very little about sound cards, so please be patient with me. I recently purchased a Dell using Windows XP with 5. surround speakers and the X-Fi ExtremeMusic card. Rather than purchasing an additional revei'ver and speakers for my digital cable box (I'm having issues with Media Center as well, but that's a different story) and DVD console or a larger monitor to replace my TV, I was thinking about purchasing the X-Fi I/O Upgrade for the cable and external DVD digital inputs to play through my computer. I've been reading and researching for days now, and while there is a lot of discussion about digital output, I can't seem to find anything about using the digital input other than for use in recording. Can you use it simply to play the audio? If so, how do you enable the source? I tried emailing Creative Support, but I've received no response, so I thought I would try here. Thanks...

If the XtremeMusic came preinstalled with the Dell?probably?it didn't come?with?built-in DD/DTS decoders, so it won't work with 5. signals from external sources (If you want to verify open Creative Audio Console and look for?a Decoder tab). To listen to PCM stereo you just have to unmute the SPDIF-In in the mixer, to decode DD/DTS you have to select 'Dolby Digital/DTS SPDIF-In decode'?from the 'SPDIF Input Settings' drop-down menu in the 'SPDIF I/O' tab (only available if the drivers detect the I/O dri've or console and the built-in decoder is installed). Be aware that decoding with the soundcard can introduce lag since Windows is not a real-time OS and the decoder has clipping problems during loud sounds with bitstreams encoded on-the-fly like in the Xbox360/PS3. There are people that built succesfully a receiver-less HTPC with an X-Fi but you'll avoid a few headaches with a standalone receiver.

  • How difficult/costly is it to install fiber optic cables?

I live in an area that has no underground cables, or fiber optic cables and I've lived with this 1.5 MB DSL connection for about 4 years now.  Yeah, it sucks.  I was curious as to what is the biggest factor when it comes to installing fiber optic cables in an area and how a company determines as to where they are going to be located.  Thanks in advance.

Installing fiber optic cables is not just a "how hard is it?" question.    yes, the business considerations do take into consideration the physical issues (how hard it may be [above ground and below ground]), but there is more:   Can the company get City\county\state PERMITS to do so?  What engineering problems are there? (mountains, existing drainage or other water culverts, etc.?)  and then there is also the business consideration of 'how much uptake will be realized if we install the fiber cable?' (how many users in the neighborhood?)
fiber optic technology (to the premises) is here and will not go away (more like CAN NOT go away), however, until the economy picks back up, it may be cheaper for more people to see how much more can be squeezed out of the existing technologies (DSL & cable) before they want to switch to what may cost more for them.  SO, in your area, the company may not be able to get the permits, maybe just not yet, who knows?   They may also not see customer uptake in your area, yet.
You may not be aware, but Verizon has recently sold-off whole states and partial states-worth of fiber-to-the-premises accounts, in what could have been Business decisions based on profit for stock holders.   -If their investments to install it will not be recouperated within the time limit required by their stock holders, it may not be installed for a while.

  • Wireless Signal Weak - Tap into Outside Box Coax Cable and Convert to RJ45 Somehow?

Garage PC is too far away from Verizon Wireless Router MI424WR.
The cable from the underground comes in at the garage and is tantalizingly close!
Can a 75 ohm video type splitter be installed at the garage and some sort of converter box be installed at that point to convert the signal and provide a hardwire connection to the network card in the garage PC?
If possible, does Verizon have this converter for a reasonable cost or can you recommend an alternative?
Can an extra STB from Verizon be installed and use the "ETHERNET" RJ45 connector on the rear panel?

The underground cable is fiber.  You can't tap into that.

Yes.  You can tap into the coax coming out of the ONT and use a MOCA bridge to provide an ethernet connection in the garage.
    See the following FAQ:
Can I get an ethernet connection in a room with only coax

VZ does not sell MOCA bridges.  See the above FAQ for sources of MOCA bridges.

No.  The RJ45 connection on the STB is not active.

  • BT Infinity should I change the cables?

I see BT gives you Ethernet 5E and standard ADSL cable should I upgrade the Ethernet cable to a 6E and get a better ADSL cable would I see a little difference!

If you are using the gigabit ports then Cat 6 would be needed to carry the speed but if not cat5e is good enough. The ADSL cable will be good enough.

  • Firmware update - Cable Telstra Gateway Max - Netgear C6300

Firmware update - Cable Telstra Gateway Max - Netgear C6300
Good news. Over the next couple of weeks we will be rolling out an update to our Telstra Gateway Max. The firmware updates will roll out in the early morning and this process is expected to finish by mid May  for all devices.
    The current firmware: Version 1.01.06
    The upgraded firmware: Version 1.04.02
    UPDATE 10/06/2015
I have confirmed that the roll out was halted so that additional fixes can be included.  Those who already received the most recent update will also receive the next update.
This should resume over the next few weeks.
    What you need to do
Nothing. The new firmware will be remotely upgraded on active Cable Broadband services that have this gateway connected. The upgrade will occur during the early morning so as to minimise disruption to the customer. The gateway should automatically go through the process of upgrading and come back online when finished. All settings will be retained.
If you experience any issues with the gateway not coming back online, restarting the gateway should resolve in most instances.
Customers who connect a new modem after the roll out has been completed, can expect their modem to be automatically updated within 48 hours of registration.
    What’s better
The majority of the updates are improvements the previous firmware version. These include:
    • Flexibility in supporting larger external media storage devices such as external hard drives and USB sticks
    • Greater stability in the Wi-Fi
    • Improvements to VPN tunnelling functionality in the gateway
    • Media streaming improvements
    • General gateway Control Panel (GUI) look and feel improvements
    What’s new
    1. Wi-Fi Mesh, is a new feature that is developed to work in conjunction with supported Telstra Wi-Fi range extenders. It allows for a single wireless network name to be shared by all devices and automatic connection to a stronger Wi-Fi signal source within your home.
The Telstra Wi-Fi Extender Max is expected to be launched in late May.
    2. “Time of Day Parental Controls” feature, giving customers the ability to put rules on individual devices connected to their gateway, based on time. This complements the already existing “Keyword Filtering Parental Controls” feature that was already available, giving customers greater control over the viewing habits of users.
Customers can access this new feature by logging into the gateways’ Control Panel via the Basic or Advanced menu. To do this:
    i. Type in http://telstra.gateway/ in a web browser on a device that is connected to the gateway (either via    Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable)
    ii. Begin Parental control feature
         a. via the Basic Menu by clicking “PARENTAL CONTROL” along the top menu and select the “Time of          Day Access” tab
         b. via the Advanced Menu by clicking “ADVANCED VIEW” along the top menu and select the “Time of          Day Access” along the left hand side menu
    iii. Click on “Add Rule”
iv. Setup a rule that applies to the customers’ needs and click “Apply” to Save.
Rules can be applied for each individual device or by network type i.e. Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

  • Self Build - New Underground Line Ducting

    Hi,
Last year we bought a site that had permission to demolish the existing house and rebuild a replacement dwelling.  The property was duly demolished by a reclamation company and now we are building the replacement dwelling.
There is a BT pole in the verge of our garden that the old house was connected to via an overhead wire.  We wish to reconnect to this pole but via an underground cable.
We are presently living in a house a mile from the site, in the same local dialing code and have a broadband/phone account with BT.  We wish to move this account, and phone number, to the new house once it is built.
My question is, what are the specifications of the ducting that we need to install?  There are plenty of online companies selling BT Spec Grey PVC Duct.  Presumably the 54mm is adequate?  What depth does it need to go etc?  Do I need to know anything else?
I believe that the duct cannot be within the slab, but can be brought up the outside of the house for drilling through the wall during connection?
Once the duct is installed, and we move into the house (moving our account) presumably BT Openreach just then come along and pull the wire through the duct to wire up/connect?
We wish to install the ducting now as we can only move into the house once it is complete - including the concrete disabled access ramps.  Obviously these would pose a significant problem to an underground cable if installed after we moved in!
    Regards,
    Oly
