Upgrade on iMac

Dear All,
I have been trying to upgrade my iMac with Leopard, but every time I place the Full Leopard DVD in my iMac it just sticks and never installs.
My system also meets the requirements for Leopard bust just won't install...HELP required.
The iMac is:
1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 (Machine Model PowerMac 6.1) (CPU Type 3.3)
1 GB DDR SDRAM
Bus Speed 167 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU) 256 KB
Speed: PC2700U-25330
Mac OS X 10.4.11
Hard drive: 149 GB
Available: 92.6 GB

I can not even get to the Language part of the install - the DVD just hangs. Nothing happens. I have installed it on my MacBook Pro so I know the DVD is not faulty.
Not necessarily true. The PPC part of the install is on a different part of the DVD.
You must also be sure your computer's optical drive can properly read dual-layer DVDs.
You should also be sure you have all "official" Apple RAM on your system and no 3rd party hardware.

I have recently upgraded my iMac Intel G5 iSight (iMac5,1) to OS 10.6.8 and now the internal mic does not work with skype or facebook. I can here static when playing back clips. Do I need to update firmware or reload old system parts. I have zapped PRAM. The blue indicator in system audio panel will appear for a second as I slide the bar for internal mic but then it disappears. Is there a fix?

The sound seems very faint but can here static on playback.

  • Tiger upgrade to iMac G3?

I have a "Snow" iMac G3 with 192 MB memory, and 30 GB hard drive. I currently am using OS10.1.5, but still have OS9.2.1 on it. The serial number is RN0395LWJVA if this will serve as any additional clues.
I'd like to upgrade to Tiger, but after many hours of reading, am still unsure whether my machine/software will take it.
    Thank you for any help/comments/sympathy/?.
    Sincerely,
    Romelle

    Hi romelle!
You do not have enough RAM. The bare minimum required is 256 MB.
I also don't think that Mac model has a DVD drive, so you would have to exchange the Tiger DVD for CD media.
It is possible to upgrade your iMac though, if you add more RAM.
    Here is some additional info.
Mac OS X Versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4, are complete system upgrades that must be purchased.
The point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.8 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Jaguar and Panther, are no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what you are looking for, Jaguar Full Retail CDs, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look like the images in the above links.

Software Update, Upgrade: What's The Difference?
Before upgrading to any OS X version, check to see if your Mac needs a Firmware Update.
If one is required, you must start the computer from a Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9 System Folder on the computer's hard disk, not from a CD, in order to install it.
Once Jaguar 10.2.x is installed, you can use the 10.2.8 Combo Update,
or if Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version of either OS.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that. Which your iMac does not.
And then use the PPC 10.4.8 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
    Jaguar System Requirements
-Power Mac G3 or G4, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer
    -128MB of physical RAM
-Supports all video cards shipped by Apple on Mac OS X-compatible systems. Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video cards: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti; Any AGP-based ATI RADEON card. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.
-QuickTime Pro functionality requires a QuickTime 6 Pro key. The QuickTime 5 Pro key will not work after this software is installed.
-DVD Player requires a DVD-ROM equipped Macintosh with built-in FireWire.
    Panther System Requirements
    Additional Panther System Requirements
    Tiger System Requirements
Additionally, "Tiger ships on a DVD, but if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you’ll need CD media. When you buy Mac OS X Tiger, you qualify to purchase Tiger CDs for only $9.95."

  • Memory Upgrade: 27" iMac, late 2009

    Hey everyone,
Quite late to the game, but definitely should upgrade my imac's memory from the standard 4gb - However my mac doesn't show up in the shopping aides some of the manufacturers have on their homepages, so the subject is a bit shady.
Am I still able to track down the working hardware for this particular computer?
If so, any suggestions? Would these do?
    Thanks!

I also have a late 2009 27" iMac installed 16 gigs of crucial memory, I ordered the mid 27" iMac memory running at Speed: 1333 MHz been running them without a problem for two an half years.

  • I upgraded my imac hard drive to a 2tb drive. how do i use time machine to get my computer back to normal?

i upgraded my imac hard drive to a 2tb drive. how do i use time machine to get my computer back to normal?

Thank you. I followed the faq#14 (using setup wizard from the osx install disk). Everything went just as planned until I woke up this morning and noticed there was no progress on the "transferring documents" meter. It stopped about 1/4 of the way. I can hear the computer working and the bar is somewhat animated like it is advancing but it's not.
Should I cancel and restart or should I wait it out? It already been about 13 hours since I started the process. Do you think it is my time machine or my iMac? Maybe the time machine file is corrupt or something.
Anyway, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • What is the best way to upgrade my iMac (2.66GHz, early '08) for Photoshop?

I'd be grateful for some advice on the most cost-efficient way to upgrade my iMac.  I had thought of replacing it this year but am hoping to stave off that decision for a while.  My reason for upgrading is that I use photoshop a lot, with big files (some up to 1Gb), many layers, panorama stitching etc.  My options seem to be:
    - Upgrade to new iMac.  I appreciate there are several advantages to this.  Faster processor, faster graphics card, support for more RAM, possibility of fusion drive etc.  The question is whether there are some low-cost steps I can take instead that will make a big difference.
    - Upgrade RAM.  This is probably a no-brainer.  I only just found out that my iMac (Model 8.1, early '08, 2.66GHz) can actually take 6Gb not the 4Gb that Apple says is the maximum.
    - Replace/add hard drive.  I had been thinking of replacing the tiny 320Gb HDD (using iFixIt guide).  However, I noticed that my external HDD on FW800 (WD) seems to run faster than the internal one, which surprised me (tested using BlackMagic - read/write speeds approx 55 on internal, 70 on external).  So maybe I just need to upgrade the external drive (new HDD in same enclosure?).
    - SDD.  I like the idea of a small-ish SDD, on which I would put my start-up partititon, photo apps (photoshop, lightroom, photomatix etc) and probably the current project.  Photoshop would be pointed towards it for the scratch file.  I think even a 120Gb SDD would work well and speed things up a lot.  I would probably aim to use iFixIt's enclosure for the SDD that replaces the optical drive.
So... if I replaced the RAM ($80), increased the external HDD to 3Tb ($150), and inserted a 120Gb SDD ($120), that would cost $350 and would give me the extra memory, the speed of SDD for start-up and all photo files, as well as a good size storage increase in the HDD.  This compares to probably $2000 for the iMac I would purchase with RAM upgrade.
Will this give me a *big* improvement or am I mostly limited by the processor speed (can I overclock?) and video card?
    Very grateful for any thoughts.

    Hello,
    RAM is the first...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=298&type=Memory
HDD, or especially an SSD would speed up things...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=298&type=Internal+Dr ive
Personally, I boot my iMac from FW for reliability.
You wouldn't want to overclock anything, unless you add a bunch of extra cooling.

  • I would like to upgrade my Imac 8,1 from 1 Gb to 4Gb RAM. Apple does not have memory for this Imac but recommended Crucial, Kingston or Ramjet. I have noticed a difference in pricing and would like to know if there are differences in their chips?

Are there any difference in these vendors chips as the price range is from $51-$99?
    Thanks, Johng

I'm coming late to this string because I now have the same issue as gillnfly and you have all solved virtually all of my questions - thanks!  My only other question to add to what you've already said is - I currently have 1 G of memory installed.  Can I ADD a 2G card to get to 3G (probably more than I need), or should cards match if you have more than 1 - i.e., 2 1G cards or replace existing 1G with a 2G, or even 2 2G cards (way more than I need).
Thanks for your spot-on comments!  I already found the OWC website and you've confirmed that's the best place to go.

When I upgraded my iMac to Lion I can no longer connect the iPad 2 to WiFi.  It gives me a message unable to search for WiFi.  Before the upgrade to Lion it worked fine.  What gives?

Could there be a setting I need to adjust in the iPad2?  When I try to turn on WiFi and enter the name of the WiFi that I have established, including the security type and the password, I get the message "Could not scan for wireless networks."  Is there a setting in iCloud or other location that needs to be changed?

  • After upgrading to Imac updating Iphone and Ipad I can no longer sync in Itunes

I have newly upgraded to IMac and love it! I also traded in my IPad to IPad Air and updated my IPhone from 4S to 5C. When I was using a Windows PC I had all my gadgets synced to ITunes (this includes a MacBook Pro and two IPods, Yes I'm hooked). Now I can no longer sync any of my gadgets to ITunes on the new IMac.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

  • I upgraded my imac to OS Mountain Lion and now the Seagate Goflex external HDD is not recognised

I upgraded the iMac to Mountain Lion and it does not recognize the Seagate Goflex External HDD that I was working from earlier. I do not want to buy a special program since the Goflex HDD was working on both mac and Windows without any problems before the upgrade. The Goflex HDD is still working on my Macbook pro so there is no problem in the HDD. Is there something that needs to be activated... Please help

A bit more info for those of you reading this.... the problem seemed to be in iTunes. For each connected device , if I clicked on the Photo option I could no longer select the second radio button for limiting the photos by Events, Albums, etc.  It was an all or nothing deal. But selecting all would cause the error.
So I had read the other forum posts about the "&" symbol being the cause of the problem.  I went through iPhoto and made all of the changes. It did not work. I then looked at iTunes, using the AlbumData2.xml file listed in the other forums as a reference.  I found one album with the "&". I edited that one.  Still would not work.  So then I spent 3 hours on the phone with AppleCare last week. I talked with 4 different advisors. None of them had heard about the "&" error from the forums. We tried everything in iPhoto including repair and rebuild.  Finally we created a whole new library and reimported my master photos from my original one.  Using this option would allow me to now check off that radio button in iTunes.  BUT... I now lost all of my albums and events and would need to rebuid them.  I was not happy. They agreed and we set up time to talk this week.
So today I talked with AppleCare again. They now have more info and said the problem has to do with iTunes and the new iPhoto 9.4. It does not like the "&" symbol anywhere in either iPhoto or iTunes. So they now have me going through everything in my iTunes library. Genre is OK but any other item cannot have " & ". I have several dozen to edit and will do it over the weekend and then restore my original iPhoto Library and see if I can finally get it all to sync. I will let you know how I make out, but apparently you need to eliminate " & " from every entry in iTunes and iPhoto.
Quality control is not up to par with Apple these days.

  • I recently purchased, from the APP store, Lion for use on my MacBook Pro.  I wish to upgrade my IMac to Lion also.  Do I need to make a 2nd purchase or will the single purchase suffice?  If the single purchase will suffice, how do I facilitate ?

I recently purchased, from the APP store, Lion for use on my MacBook Pro.  To upgrade my IMac to Lion, need I make an additional purchase?  If not, how do I facilitate the IMac upgrade?

No, you do not need to re purchase Lion. You can re download Lion on all your authorized Macs using the same Apple ID.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
