Upgrade or migrate/ Rejoin separate external library's
Since upgrading to OS 10.9.4 on my iMac I am unable to edit in Aperture 2.1.4, it simply crashes with the message "Aperture quit unexpectedly" one i crop etc.
1/ I gather this is due to the upgrade so am not sure as a next step? Upgrade to next version of Aperture or simply change to Lightroom. I am happy with APerture and regulary use the Nik software plug ins and find these provide plenty software tools for me. But given the negative vibes around about future of APerture i am willing to try something different if need be.
2/ My libraries are also all over the place on different external drives - most recent pics on a OWS Mercury ELite Pro which i need to use an adaptor to plug in as it is an American brand. Much older photos are on a couple of WD drives which are not connected to the computer right now because they refuse to start up. What is the best way to go about reestablising my library so it is whole again?

Ouch. You have a bit of a problem.
If you search you'll find lots of tutorials for switching from Aperture 3 to LR. Basically the problem lies in getting information Aperture stores about your photos (keyworks and other metadata, organization like projects/albums, and edits to the photos themselves) into a form LR can use. It can use standard photo metadata easily. Organization is a bit tougher, but can be accomplished via keywording, folder organization, and some other tricks. Edits are basically stuck in Aperture; you have to export an image to preserve them in a new DAM (unless and until you can switch to Photos when that comes out). There's really no way to simply import an Aperture library into LR (or vice versa).
Most of the solutions rely on being able to use Aperture to export, or move masters, or whatever. Seems you can't do any of that. I also assume you are using non-referenced photos. I don't think merging your libraries will make the process of moving to Aperture 3, Photos, or LR any easier, but iPhoto Library Manager might be able to do that for you.
But there are still ways; it just depends on how much work you wanna do. Aperture libraries are just package folders; your masters are in there, just hidden. You can make use of aliases, or even changing the name of the Aperture library itself, in order for the Finder and/or LR to see inside that masters folder and find your photos. BE CAREFUL though; research what you're doing before you jump into that. I use LR to reference files that are within a current Aperture/iPhoto library but messing around in there can have some bad results with Aperture if you don't know what you're doing. But it can also save you if you have no other way to access those photos. You could also just manually copy them out of there, perhaps a safer route.

At a guess you followed the process in HT1364 - iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder which would have moved the media folder to a new path of your choice. This process leaves the library database files back in the original location of <User's Music>\iTunes. Often people assume that all they need is now on the external drive and wipe the internal drive, or discard their old computer, before backing up the all important iTunes folder. If you have a backup of your user's profile folder from before the upgrade the iTunes library folder should be in there somewhere. Restore it to <User's Music> and your original library should pop back into existence. The external drive would need to have the same drive letter that it had previously.
A more effective way to relocate the library is to move the entire iTunes folder to the external drive, then hold down shift when starting iTunes and keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. You would then choose the file iTunes Library.itl in the iTunes folder on the external drive. If this is the way you moved the library before then that is how you should now reconnect to it. Changing the media folder in preferences doesn't change which .itl database file is opened, nor does double-clicking on an .itl file directly.
If you no longer have the original .itl file then you will have to build a new library and import the media to it. If you need to do this I would recommend you create a new library at F:\iTunes, then move your existing media folders inside F:\iTunes\iTunes Media before importing. This will avoid the creation of duplicates and make sure the library is in the correct shape going forwards.
If you have an iPod or iOS device my scripts ImportDevicePlaylists and SyncStats may well let you recover ratings, play counts & playlists from the device.
When you've fixed up your libray you should consider getting a second external drive to backup to.

I have an external C library that have been using for years to extracy binary data (images, docs, pdfs etc) from a blob column in a table
This has been working on Oracle 10.2.0.1 on Windows 32 bit for years.
I have a new server, Windows 2008 64 bit, have installed 11.2.0.1, created a database and done a full datapump export and import.
My application seems to work fine with the exception of this external dll
I have made sure the dll is in the correct directory on the server and the library is pointing to it :

The problem is the for some reason Oracle cannot load the dll, I think the code is fine as it has run on 10g, I think the issue is maybe along the lines that there is something extra in 11g I need to do to set the external library up or it's not happy with the fact it's 64bit or the listener.ora needs to be different in 11g or something like that but I am at a loss as where to look -
Migrating a 300GB Aperture library with limited disk space.
This morning I decided to migrate my 300GB Aperture Library to the new Photos app on my MacBook Air. I have 20GB of remaining space on my internal drive and thanks to Apple's use of hard links I was hoping this wouldn't be an issue when migrating.
After choosing to use iCloud Photo Library I was prompted that I would need to upgrade to the 500GB plan which I did. After completing the purchase I was then prompted that there wasn't enough space on my drive to download the current contents of my iCloud Library (13GB). Having 20GB available I thought this quite odd but proceeded to use optimised storage. It's worth noting that the entire contents of my iCloud Library already exist in my Aperture Library which I'm attempting to migrate. I was hoping the Photos app would be able to determine these duplicates before downloading everything!
The real kicker came when Photos app began processing the library. After reaching 3% I was informed that I would need approximately an additional 53GB of space in order to migrate this library! Freeing up that much space on my internal drive isn't a possibility without removing my Aperture Library so I'm going to have to complete the migration on an external drive.
Side note: It would be nice if Apple assed all space requirements before requiring me to pay and upgrade my iCloud space. It might be several weeks before users are in a position to actually utilise the space if such barriers occur at this point in the migration workflow.
I have now copied my Aperture Library to an external drive and I'm performing the migration on there.
I'm assuming that the additional 53GB of space the Photos app required is purely for the purposes of migration. It seems a hefty amount of disk space (roughly 18% of the library size) to be consumed otherwise. After migration is complete I'm hoping the Photos Library will only consume a small additional amount of space considering the master images and previews are hard linked. If this is the case then I should be able to copy the library back to my internal drive.
Couple of questions:
1) Is this 53GB of space required purely for migration?
2) Will I be able to copy both the Photos Library and the Aperture Library to my internal drive, preserving the hard link relationship between the two? If so, would this need to be achieved via the command line or should the Finder resolve this?
I'm worried that initiating a copy from the Finder, will in effect see the hard links for the original files, therefore requiring space for both full libraries. Ideally I would like the files to behave in the same way they would had I carried out the migration on my internal drive giving me the freedom to preserve (and therefore open) the Aperture Library in the future on my internal drive.

When I go to Central Admin > Upgrade and Migration > Manage Databases Upgrade Status, I have 2 content databases which have the status:

If you find any missing file issue in DB then resolve these issue to upgrade content database.
(verify all customizations referenced within the content database are also installed in the web application. This cmdlet can be issued
against a content database currently attached to the farm, or a content database that is not connected to the farm )

to resume a failed database upgrade or begin a build-to-build database upgrade against a SharePoint content database

Using an External Library only
My start-up disk is full. Can I dump all my itunes media unto a separate hard drive (or ipod for example) and NOT store them on my computer? Then, can I still use itunes for playing my media BY USING THE EXTERNAL AS THE LIBRARY itself and not have to reload them to my computer itself. I have already bought more memory from Apple and my computer is at its maximum capability. I want to use itunes but do not want to store the library on my computer. Is this posible?
Followed your instructions and worked like a charm; all of my itunes music is now on my external hard drive. I dumped the MUSIC file and freed up a lot of space on my computer.
BUT... I still want to use itunes as my music player. Now when I click on itunes the library is empty - so I go to the external. Everything is there but a major pain to find a song. So now do I have to import the whole library each time I want to use itunes? The original plan was to use itunes but have an EXTERNAL LIBRARY. It does not seem like this is possible unless I want to import everything each day and dump it again when I finish with itunes. Is this the only solution?? Or am I confusing or missing something? (it takes over 20 mins to import and fills up my computer again so I have no space left!!)
Its looking like if I want free space I can't use itunes at all. Maybe i'm not explaining this well. -
Need advice in designing an External library DC

We've got about 10 jar files that we use in our developments that needs to be exposed via External library DC.
Each DC that we develop uses a different combination of these jar files.
I am wondering whether to create a seperate public part for each jar or create just one public part and add each jar to it as an entity.
I would be happy to hear your opinion and pros/cons for each method.

I think we need to look at what you mean by 'efficiency' with this requirement first. I suppose you need to decrease the size of the classpath at three distinct points: compilation in the IDE, build time in the NWDI, and runtime on the application server.
At compile time (in your NWDS), having a single external library DC with multiple public parts will cut down on the classpath with which NWDS has to work in your referencing project - only the classes within the public parts of your external library DC will be accessible. (And God knows it's not the most efficient little IDE, so it needs all the help it can get.)
Having said that, if your external library DC contains code (which it can), you'll probably need to be rebuilding it fairly frequently, even if you don't change anything. In this case, you need to take into account the size of the external library DC itself - so splitting your libraries into separate DCs and setting up the graph of dependencies would be preferable.
However, in this instance, you need to remember that the NWDS (or, more correctly, the Web DynPro tools) is essentially broken with respect to its resolution of dependencies. You're constantly having to rebuild things in a certain order to get it to recognise your libraries, open and close the IDE in order for things to compile correctly, and so on. Creating a large dependency graph will likely only exacerbate this problem.
With respect to builds by the NWDI, before the assembly step, your classpath should be the same as at compile-time in the NWDS. When the assembly occurs, however, everything in your track is built - so it doesn't really matter where you put things. Everything is also going to be deployed to TEST and PROD anyway (which is what Snehal was alluding to).
Although I'm not certain of this, I assume that the situation at runtime is the same as at compiletime. I don't know if SAP has released in-depth information about the class-loading strategies employed by the Web DynPro runtime with respect to public parts, but I'd expect that the runtime and compile time classpaths would be consistent. (The class-loading strategies employed by the Web Application Server more generally would also suggest that this were the case.)
Obviously, the more complex you make your dependency structure (the more independent public parts you have, and even moreso, the more separate library DCs you have), the more complex you'll make the process whereby other developers will declare dependencies upon your DC, as they'll have to reference multiple public parts and DCs. However, using more conventional referencing methods, they would need to determine which JAR files they needed anyway.
Consequently, in the greater scheme of things, one questions how much real efficiency there is to be gained here. The more granular your dependencies, the more efficient your design will be. But this complicates things in practice in the NWDS, and whether it is worth the extra effort depends on how large your libraries are, and how many of them you have - i.e., how much you have to gain by optimising. -
Can't access external library after iOS5 update
For years I've kept separate itunes libraries on an external drive without a problem (well, mostly without problems). After updating itunes to work with iOS5 I can no longer access my external library files. All of them are greyed out and I can't choose them. Each collection of library files are located within separate folders ( I have one for music, one for audio books, and one for tv/movies) on the external drive. The data (musice, movies, etc) seem fine. Has Apple changed where the library files need to be located? or is it another issue. The only thing I could think of was to run repair permissions but that didn't change a thing. I really don't want to lose the organization and playlists for over 100GB of files. Please help!
iPhoto 9.6 only runs on Yosemite.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store -

I have 2 Macbooks each with an account for me and one for my wife. I use one Macbook logged in with my account and my wife uses the other Macbook only logged in on her account. We both make regular time-machine back-ups each on a separate external disk. Is it possible to update her account on my macbook using her external disk without overwriting my stuff on the same Macbook and vice versa?
Time Machine does not do individual accounts. It records the complete drive. So if you were to use her TM backup on your Mac it would make your Mac just like hers. Both yours and her account on your MAC.
Just copy the missing files over from her Mac to yours. If there are differennt programs on each then they would need to be installed on both. -
I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?
In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.

My external library 100 GB on a 2TB drive is taking a long time to open.

I recently moved my library to an external drive. When I tried to load the external drive, it said it needed to repair and I let it happen overnight because it was taking a long time.
Now it seems to just freeze when I try to load the external library. Can someone let me know if there is something I can do to make this process speed up? Should I move some of my projects to another library and keep it off-line?

If Aperture is freezing on opening, this can be caused by corrupted or incompatible media, but it would not explain the original error message your reported - "permissions".
When the repair finishes, try to launch Aperture with the Shift-key held down. This will defer the generation of previews. If media cannot beprocessed, Aperture will hang, when it tries to generate the previews for those images or videos. If you can get Aperture to launch after deferring the preview generation, you could open the Activity window (Window > Show Activity) and then selectively try to generate previews for your last imported images and videos (Photos > update preview). The Activity window will show, what is currently processed, and perhaps you can spot, which of the files is causing the hang. -

Umm, I don't usually use DC's... I don't know if this will work... you can make an EAR (New Proyect -> J2EE -> Enterpise Application Module), add your EJB Module to the EAR (right click on EJB Project and choose Add to EAR proyect), and you'll find a j2ee-engine file on it, and you can add the reference there.Then deploy the EAR.
I normally do something similar to your issue, I make a EJB calling XI via Java Proxys, and the reference to the XI libs are allocated on the EAR, not on the EJB. This is only for runtime, for compilation you must reference the hibernate jar with an external jar file, as always.
A dirty solution could be this one: open your generated EAR with de-compressor, and copy your hibernate jar on it (at root). This way you'll load hibernate classes at runtime (I know this is an horrible solution, this is only for testing).
As I said before, I'm not used to DCs, so this could be wrong, and be a waste of time... I don't know further...
