Upgrade or migrate to server 2008 standard edition x64 from server 2003

i'm trying to migrate from server2003 dc to server2008. now when i go to put my burnt dvd-r into the cd drive the server doesn't reconize it, but when i go to look at the contents of the cd on another computer all the files are there. now how do
you get server 2003 to reconize the dvd-r cd that i burnt server2008 on to. Also when i go to look at other cd's on my drive they all show now why won't my burnt cd not show. (purchased from internet, server2008 and have administrative rights to download
from microsoft).

th eupgrade optiuon from Standard 2008 to Enterprise 2008 was only available for customers with open value contract with activ esoftware assurance then they can purchase the step up license from Standard to Enterprise.
the only way to have the Enterprise 2008 Edition is to make th edowngrad efrom 2012 Standard to 2008 Enterprise. it means that if you purchase the 2012 R2 Standard Edition, you may downgarde to Enterprise 2008/2008 R2. th ebest way to make the downgrade
to 2008 R2 Enterprise is to purchase the current Version 2012 R2 Standard in volume licensing than you can download diretly from VLSC the Enterprise Edition.
with your downgrade you can still using the 2008 CALs.

SQL Server Management Studio Express Edition may not allow to create a linked server, but the workaround is to use the T-SQL. You can use sp_addlinkedserver and sp_addlinkedsrvlogin.

USB Controller Driver (3.0) for Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition 32-bit

I have recently built a HP DL320e Gen8 v2 server with Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition 32-bit & it's missing the USB Controller Driver which HP don't have. I have searched endlessly online without success. HP suggest I try Windows but I couldn't
find it in the Download Center either.

Hi,
You can configure a Windows server 2008 NLB cluster with up to 32 nodes. However,
scaling beyond 8 nodes will cause a slight performance hit because the network traffic is broadcasted to every node and only one NLB node accepts the connection.

Intermittant disconnection of Shared Drives on Windows 7 Client machines hosted in WIndows Server 2008 Standard Edition

The environment - Windows Server 2008 Standard/Windows 7 32 bit Client machine.
Share - It is not a DFS share.
Antivirus - McAfee
The issue - 1 user is unable to connect to a particular shared drive hosted from within the Windows Server 2008 Standard file server. This drive is one of the multiple drives which are supposed to be connected to the user machine during logon using
the logon script. All the other drives mentioned in the logon script gets mapped fine but one particular drive does not. The user uses a laptop and we have checked his connections while in LAN, Wireless, VPN. Everything seems to be working
fine apart from this one shared drive. Rest of the users within that office gets the drive fine but just not this one user. Since we are not domain admins so we do not have a visibility of the group policies linked to this particular drive and
hence RSOP as well does not help. We have not seen the user getting logged into the machine using a TEMP profile as well for us to ascertain that the issue may be with a TEMP profile logon.
Please note that the drive does get connected at times and at times the connection just drops off! As an interim measure the local IT has created a batch file and given it to the user which maps the drive for the user.
Any help in resolving this long impending issue would be much appreciated!

You could keep the session always active to workaround this issue. Please open Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Local Security Policy -> Local Policy -> Security Options and set the value of the policy Microsoft Network Server:Amount
of idle time required before suspending a session to 99999 and see how it works.
This security setting determines the amount of continuous idle time that must pass in a Server Message Block (SMB) session before the session is suspended due to inactivity. Administrators can use this policy to control when a computer suspends an inactive
SMB session. If client activity resumes, the session is automatically reestablished. For this policy setting, a value of 0 means to disconnect an idle session as quickly as is reasonably possible. The maximum value is 99999, which is 208 days; in effect, this
value disables the policy.

Sql server 2008 standard edition cluster adding 3rd node

we have a 2 node active passive sql server 2008 r2 cluster. We plan to add a third node on temp basis to the cluster. As one old nodes will be removed. As standard edition of sql support 2 nodes, can we add third node to it ??

There is no way to add a 3rd node without doing an EDITION UPGRADE from Standard to Enterprise. It is by design.
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition supports up to two nodes in a failover cluster.

Sql server 2008 standard edition verses enterprise edition

I heard on a call today that microsoft has different logging capture in these two editions. Also because of this difference that at least in the past GG could not support some replication approaches from SQL Server Standard Edition beacuse of this. Can anyone point me to a resource or certification matrix that references standard verses enterprise versions of SQL Server.

From the SQL Server installation guide:
● SQL Server 2000/2005: Enterprise and Standard Edition
● SQL Server 2008: Enterprise (capture or delivery) or Standard Edition (delivery only)
● SQL Server 2008 R2: Enterprise (capture or delivery) or Standard Edition (delivery only)

NLB nodes remain in a converging state indefinitely? Server 2008 Standard R2 x64 used as web servers, IIS 7.5.

I'm a newbie to NLB. We have just two identical servers in the NLB, a pair of nics, and unicast mode, being used as web servers. Let me know if you need additional info and what it may be.
What I'm doing is adding ip addresses to the cluster using the NLB Manager, one ip add for each site. It doesn't happen every time, but many times when I add an ip add one of the servers just spins converging.
I have KB 978943 which says there's a hotfix available for the problem. What I don't have is the Event ID 119 in the Event logs mentioned in the KB. I have nlb.sys v6.1.7600.16385 dated 13July09.
How can I fix this?

I had similar issue with 2 virtual web servers configured in NLB Windows 2008 R2.
The setup was working fine until recently and in bizarre way one of the machines went into converging state and never stopped doing that.
I tried:
- reinstalling NLB
- rebuilding the machine which kept on converging
- changed the IP addresses on both the machines; but with no luck. Even with new machine it kept on converging when I introduced it to the NLB
Resolution I found:
1. The issue was not with the machine which kept on converging; but the machine which remained converged all the time
2. I removed the machines from the domain. Changed their DNS names. Reintroduced them to the domain and BINGO; they bothe converged successfully in NLB after doing this action. In some awkward way the domain schema had a old foot print of the this NLB configuration
which got resolved after changing the DNS names of both the web servers.
Let me know if it works.
note: I have not used KB 978943

Failed SQL express install on Server 2008 Standard

I am attempting to install Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition on a Server 2008 Standard SP2, which all ready includes SQL Server 2008. The installer includes SQL Server Express, which is failing without any error codes.
Visual Web Developer only partly installs. The tools folder has a shortcut to Remote Debugger, as the only component to succeed. It seems this is the newest version of Visual Studio compatible with Server 2008 Standard.
My real goal is to create an empty Win Forms site bound to its existing SQL Server 2008 and then drop my completed development site pages into the production server. I need a successful complete install.

Based on your description, you had install SQL Server 2008 Standard edition, and you try to install the Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition SP1 with SQL Server 2008 Express, but SQL Server install failed with this error message: "A component could not
be downloaded".
When install SQL Server express, it will download files from website, please verify the issue is not caused by the network issue.
You can try to review the SQL Server Setup log for more details. The dafult path is:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\.
You can also try to download the SQL Server 2008 express from the following link and install separately.

You can install two instances on Single windows server as well as you can install two instances on two different windows server its totally no issue with any scenario.
You need to decide yourself we upfront cannot give you any concrete advise a we dont know why and for what purpose you are installing
