Upgrade, or update catalog in LR2.1

I've just installed and then loaded LR 2.1.
I now have a window asking me, do I want to,
"Upgrade the Lightroom 1 Catalog, named "Lightroom Catalog"?
OR, do I want to
"Create a new Lightroom 2 catalog"?
What should I do?
What advantages/disadvantages are there to these options?
I've read of some of the horror stories from my fellow pro's, on this forum, when files are imported, albeit that was from upgrading from LR1.4 to LR2.
I waited until the LR 2.1 was "out" hoping to avoid any problems with my catalog.
My system is as follows:
Pc, XP(sp3)
2gig ram

If you want to use your existing catalog, you're going to need to upgrade it. The upgrade process saves a copy of your existing 1.x catalog.
If you don't, you'll have to re-import all your photos, and you'll lose everything about those photos unless you've written out the xmp data to them. Even then, you'll lose flags, VCs, Develop history, stacks and collections.

Upgrading existing catalog to LR2 at a later time?

I just bought and installed the LR2 Upgrade but cancelled out just before deciding whether to start a new LR2 catalog or upgrade the existing catalog. I'm reading messages here from people who went with upping their existing catalogs only to run into problems. I'm leaning towards starting with a new catalog but wonder if I can migrate the old catalog over at a later date or bite the bullet and let the program do the translation now?
I'm not going to attempt anything until I get feedback. Please do post your suggestions. Thanks

Yeah. I let it convert my 1.4 catalog and it did so with no problems. But then I had about 500 images in my LR2 beta catalog with their adjustments I wanted to bring over. To top it off, those images existed in my full catalog already, but WITHOUT those adjustments I wanted.
Under file, you can import a catalog... I just imported my LR2 beta, it said it needed to convert it... then it gave me options of what to do about duplicate files, metadata, etc. Worked very well.

Error: Unable to Update Catalog while upgrading catalog from lr4 to lr5

I just recently installed Lightroom 5 from my new Creative Cloud account. While accessing for the first time, it asks me to upgrade the lr4 catalog to lr5. Everytime I run the process, I eceive the following message below.
I tried optimizing the lr4 catalog, but that diddn't work. I saw another post saying to try upgrading the lr4 backup catalog, but that didn't work also.
Any suggestions? Please help since I a newer user to Lightroom.

Try this:
Make sure this checkbox is checked in the System/Sharing preference pane:
If it is, uncheck it and then recheck and try ordering again.

Unable to upgrade a LR1 or an LR2 Catalogue in LR3 or LR4

Unable to upgrade a LR1 or an LR2 Catalogue in LR3 or LR4. Both LR3 and LR4 try to upgrade the LR1/LR2 Catalogs but then give an error message saying it is unable to upgrade the catalog just before opening. Can anyone help? I'm using all updated versions....

Problem solved
There maybe a problem upgrading a catalogue from PowerPC to an Intel. I finally mangaged to open my (PowerPC) LR1 catalog in (Intel) LR4 by installing the trial version of LR2 on the Intel, opening the LR1 catalog in LR2, and then opening the new LR2 catalog in LR4 which will then upgrade it. Problem solved.

Upgraded LR1 - LR3 Catalog: blank Grid, non functioning app

I've been dealing with support on this, but they're utterly useless, taking days to get back to me and spinning me over troubleshooting 101 stuff.
Problem:
Upgraded a perfectly working LR1 catalog to LR3. No issues during upgrade.
Upon trying to use the LR3, the first thousand or so of my photos show up in Grid, but everything after that is blank. By that I mean, a grid cell is drawn, but LR3 doesn't display a thumbnail, or any cell extras or metadata.
Clicking on one of these empty cells gives me a thumbnail frame and some metadata (slowwwwly).
Going to Loupe View on a non-empty cell gives me a "Loading..." spinner and an unrendered thumbnail preview (CPU is not ramping up at all)
Going to Loupe View on an empty cell just gives me a blank screen (CPU is not ramping up at all)
Develop module does load the picture, but slowly.
When I quit, the app freezes up completely, with beachball. Must force-quit (after giving it 20 minutes in case it was actually trying to do something)
Initially, when I load LR3, my CPU runs high, 75%, like it's working on something. Then it just cuts out as if it's given up.
Console output when this happens is the following:

Other things I've tried:
Trashing all LR3 prefs, caches (running YASU), LR preview caches, plists, extensions, reinstalling, restarting -- no luck
Noticed it was copying the LR1 prefs plist, so I archived that. LR3 generated a new pref, but no help
Downloaded LR2 Demo, upgraded LR1 Catalog to LR2 Catalog (which works perfectly, no issues), and then LR2 Cat -> LR3 -- no luck
Checking integrity of Catalog in LR1 and LR2 (no problems) and LR3 when upgrading (no problems)
LR3 runs fine on an empty catalog and if I point it at my photo folder and import everything, it's ok (with none of my 3 years of modifications of course).
Is my only option to write out LR1 data to sidecar files and then setup a new Catalog in LR3?

Well, on top of having full access to the photo files, LR obviously has proper permissions to affect the files it generates in the AppSupport>Adobe>Lightroom folder, the Caches>Lightroom folder, the Pictures>Lightroom folder and the Preferences> folder, otherwise it wouldn't be able to build a new catalog, new prefs, new caches and so forth when I generate a new empty catalog.
I really doubt this is a permissions voodoo issue or a monitor profile issue.
LR3 works fine with a brand new catalog (and all the same Photo files).
LR1 and LR2 have absolutely no problem with my catalog and photo files.
LR2 upgrades my LR1 Catalog without issue.
LR3 fails with my upgraded catalog (and all the same photo files)
Unless I'm missing something in my logic tree here, it seems to me this is obviously a problem with LR3 upgrading my Catalog.
Other people's catalogs upgrade fine, and that's dandy, but my catalog doesn't upgrade AND it fails with exactly the same error message every time in the Console (See original post), which seem to be related to some internal db issue, dividing by zero, nil values.
Something ain't being handled right by LR3 that previous versions of LR had no problem with.

Lightroom 3 crash after upgrading Lightroom 1 Catalog

I installed Lightroom 3 and upgraded my Lightroom 1 catalog (21,000 photos). It runs through the upgrade process without any problems and opens Lightroom 3, where I can browse through a few screens of images.
However, if I scroll past a certain point in my Grid view, Lightroom 3 stops rendering thumbnails. Double clicking on images fails to render a preview. CPU usage at this point goes from 50% to 0. At this point, Lightroom 3 becomes useless, though I can still scroll up and down, I only see empty grid thumbnail frames.
If I quit the application, I get a beachball, for minutes on end before I force quit.
Console reports the following:

Deleting all Lightroom 3 prefs, plists, catalog, previews, rebooting and trying the process again results in exactly the same problem.
I can still run Lightroom 1 fine. It has no problem with the Lightroom 1 catalog. I tried optimizing the Lightroom 1 catalog before upgrading, but this
did nothing.
I'm running on a 2007 MacBookPro with 3GB RAM and a 7200 RPM 500GB drive under Mac OS X 10.5.8.

The problem lies in 1 or more "corrupt" catalog entries from the old catalog. I had exactly the same problem going from LR2 to LR3 on a 2009 iMac running 10.6.4. I got the same console error messages and had exactly the same symptoms.
However I discovered that I could start LR3 with a new empty library and then use "import from catalog" to selectively import some parts from my LR2 catalog. There are about 6k images in the LR2 catalog and some folders would work fine and others would fail. After a lot of trial and error I was able to isolate where LR3 would hang and give me problems. And the images that it had a problem with were 2 images from the old catalog that LR2 would not display. Instead LR2 would show a blank thumbnail where the "corrupt" catalog thumbnail should be and would not be able to display that image. For those images, LR2 gave the following console error message:

Aside from not display the thumbnails and images for those two files, LR2 worked fine. When I unselected those two images from the "import from catalog" dialog, I was able to import the rest of my LR2 catalog into LR3 in one shot.
If LR1 fails to display some thumbnails, you could manually note which those are and then use the same process I used. It is still tedious going through a large library looking for blank thumbnails. If LR1 displays all thumbnails correctly then you could try the brute force trial and error approach that I initially used but that is very time consuming.

Option to Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog not available (LR5, PSE 12, Win 8)

Hi there. I have trial versions of both Photoshop Elements 12 and Lightroom 5.2 (trial licenses are both still active (i.e. not expired)). I'm looking to import my PSE12 catalog into Lightroom before I plunk down the money to buy it.
I cannot, however, locate the "File->Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog" option in LR5.
I may have originally installed LR 5 before installing PSE 12. So I uninstalled LR5 and reinstalled it. Still no luck - the option isn't there.
Any other ways to force LR5 to look for the PSE 12 catalog? Will LR5 even recognize a PSE12 catalog?

SCCM 2012 R2 -CU3 fails at 'Create Software Update Catalog'

I am trying to upgrade SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 to CU3 (skipping CU2) but the upgrade fails in the middle with following message in the log
Task 'Create Software Update Catalog' completed, state is 'failed' ExceptionText: Error: Setup detected an unexpected problem during installation. Error message: A valid file name is required.
Parameter name: fileName
I have checked following article but it does not fixed mine.

** RESOLVED **
After attempting several times and uninstalling when it failed, finally it got installed successfully.
Since I was skipping CU2 so I thought to install that as well before installing CU3. However, the CU2 also failed at Admin Console update. Re started installing CU3 but this time I choose not to create deployment packages for client, server and console.
Not sure if that fixed it or CU2 but I am glad its over now. After installing CU3 successfully, ran the installer again to create all required deployment packages for console, client and server.
All looks good now.

Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog option is missing

The File Menu/Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog is missing on my version of LR5. I've followed the suggested procedure to update the preferences files for both Elements 12 and Lightroom 5, but LR5 still does not recognize that I have an existing Elements 12 catalog. I assume if it did the option would now be available?

'Upgrade Photoshop Elements catalog' menu item missing

Hi,
I have been using PSE for many years and recently upgraded to PSE8 (and PRE8). In addition, I started playing with the LR3 Beta and realized that I wanted to migrate LR from PSE. I just bought LR3 and now want to import my PSE8 catalog into LR3. The Lightroom Help tells me that I should go to File - Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog (while in Library module), but this menu item is not showing up in my Lightroom... Is my LR3 not detecting my PSE8 catalog installation? How can I fix this?
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Update catalog with new files ? - LR 2.2

I have imported all my files/folders into catalogs in LR2.2
But if I add new files to a folder, the files do not show up
in LR. I guess I have to update/refresh the catalog but how
do I do this ? Do I have to import the folder again, to get
all the new files into the catalogs ?

Right click on the folder when in Library and choose "Synchronise folder.....". This will allow you to import the new files in that folder.

After upgrading Ver 8 catalog in Ver 12, Ver 12 just crashes

I have upgraded to Version 12 from Version 8. After upgrading the catalog via the "Manage Catalogs" option Version 12 just closes and the only way to get it going is to rename the catalog in the ProgData.folder.
I have also tried to move the Albums to a new Ver 12 catalog. I can copy the Albums and install them but there is nothing in each album. How can I fill each album with the photos that were there in Ver 8.

Thanks for your reply. I am using Photoshop Elements 8 and 12. I have been trying to get the catalog from 8 to 12. I have converted the catalog to ver 12 but it will not open. Surprisingly, it still opens in ver 8.
I have also tried just moving just the Albums. I saved all the Albums to a file then imported the albums into ver 12. However they remain empty and I cannot work out how get the data back into them.
We have updated to a new Toshiba i7 laptop running Win 8.1 and have updated all drivers. I tried the same conversion on the old (10 year) hp laptop and it worked fine. I could open the converted catalog with no problem. However it did not contain all the photos so it was not possible to just transfer the updated catalog from that PC.
All I want is an updated catalog with all previous albums intact. There are about 55,000 photos in the catalog.
Hopefully you can help.

Updating Catalog

Just started using the trial version.
When I add images to an existing folder, how do I get the Catalog to update - force an update to the current catalog?
Probably simple, but I can't find how to do it.

I don't know where this specific one is described. The 3 dots are shown while LR determines the metadata status on a photo, so they should disappear after some time on all the thumbnails.

If you hover with your mouse over the badges, you'll get a balloon help telling you what a specific badge means. Under the View menu in View Options, you can set which badges and indications are shown in the Grid View, and what information should be shown in the Loupe View. Both views have to flavours, the compact and expanded cells for the grid (toggle with "J"), and the info 1 and info 2 view for loupe (toggle with "I").
One final question - is there a way to get Lightroom and Elements to share the same catalog? Seems like it would make sense if they "live" on the same computer. Or do you have to export from Lightroom and then open in Elements, or something similar?
If you decide to go with LR, it does not make sense to work with the PSE catalog anymore. What you can do is upgrade your PSE catalog into an LR catalog. Then, when you want to edit a photo from within LR by means of PSE, you can do so by choosing "Edit in PSE".
