UPGRADE  Panther or Tiger on Imac DV 400?

I am trying to determine which OS would be the better choice for my computer. I have been running 10.2.8 for a few years, but I just bought photoshop elements 4 and now I see I need 10.3 or better. I can use the educator discount from Apple for Tiger, or probably find an old retail disc for Panther, but I am wondering (for those who've tried with a similar system), which OS works better?
iMac DV 400 Mac OS X (10.2.x) original 10G hard drive, 576 ram

It really doesn't matter which one you decide to use. However, that original 10G hard drive must be getting a bit cramped. Without having the RAM up to full capacity (it will take two 512 MB chips), you are overly depending upon virtual memory, which needs lots of free hard drive space to write to. Unless you are doing frequent restarts and keeping lots of hard drive space freed up, you could start having problems, and possibly losing data.
Before considering upgrading the OS, it would be best to consider upgrading the hard drive and/or installing more RAM.

  • Please help, need to upgrade from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4 Tiger on imac g3 400 dv

Hello, I would greatly appreciate assistance to upgrade my operating system from 9.2.2 to osx 10.4.10. I have gotten the firmware upgrade installed to 4.1.9. Can anyone tell me what else I need to upgrade to have this computer able to install Tiger 10.4, on an imac g3 400 dv slot loading.....
Right now when I try to install the disc 10.4 using the option key at restart, it wont load the install disc. Any help would be appreciated , thank u in advance!!!!!!!

Hi, thank u for responding, my harddrive is 10 gigs, and my memory ram is only 64 megs, I ordered 2 512 mg from 18004memory.com and it didnt work , the computer said there was a memory issue. So I returned the memory back to 18004 memory.com...... I will neve ruse them again , because on their website they stated its guranteed to work and is compliant with imac 400 dv. They stated they will send me another set from another manufacturer, but to return the memory first.....
I know I meet all the requirements for tiger , except for the ram which apple says I need 256 mg,
But I was referring to any firmaware upgrades or bios upgrades or any of those type of programming upgrades to ready it for tiger, I know I installed the 4.19, and went from os 9.0 to its current 9.22, I think that alone was 5 upgrades. I think I might be missing an upgrade or maybe not. I will run the utility u posted and thank u for that.....
Apple told me that I can installl tiger 10.4.10 on this computer.
The install discs I bought on ebay state imac MAC osx install disc one and there is and install disc 2, it says AHT VERSION 3A127, and dated as produced in the year 2007. it colored grey , but doesnt have the black X like someone else posted it should have
Oh and it does open the files in 9.22, it does mount, and it does have folders,
Thank u for ur help as I progress to ultimately saving this imac....
    many thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Upgraded Panther to Tiger: now Mail won't download email from Sympatico

    Hi there,
If someone wouldn't mind advising... I just ugraded my wife's powerbook from Panther to Tiger (10.4.9)... and even though her email settings are still the same (incoming server, outgoing server, etc.), Mail won't collect her email from the Sympatico site.
Do I have to get rid of her Mail prefs and re-boot? Or something? (if it's the former, which prefs exactly, and where are they?).
    thanks,
    Malcolm

You can always delete your account from Mail and re-create it... There are 2 kinds of account settings for a Sympatico account:
The "old ones" that have the same settings since Sympatico started 10 years ago:
    Username: b1**##
    Password: access password
    Incoming mail (POP3): pop6.sympatico.ca
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp1.sympatico.ca
Port server 25 for Outgoing (SMTP)
Port server 110 for Incoming (POP3)
The other Sympatico e-mail is the enhance one with MSN. The settings are differents and the authentification is different. Any new Sympatico accounts since June 2004 are on that new plaform:
    Username: [email protected]
    Password: e-mail password
    Incoming mail (POP3): pophm.sympatico.ca
    Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtphm.sympatico.ca
    Verify that your server is set to requires anthentiation with agin your Sympatico e-mail and Sympatico password;
Both servers, Outgoing and Incoming, require a secure connection (SSL)
If you are not sure witch is what try to login online at: http://www.sympaticomail.sympatico.ca it will tell you if can upgrade to new enhance e-mail or if you sign in like a Hotmail account if you are already enhance.
    I hope this help....
    Cheers

  • MDD upgrade Panther to Tiger problem

I have 2 G4 MDD running 10.3.9 I wanted to upgrade them to Tiger to run CS3. The first machine upgraded normally the second one only gets to the checking hard drive screen +/_ a bit and the message comes on the screen that I need to restart the computer. All controls are locked out and only the power button will shut it down. I tried booting from the install disc by holding the C key down but it does the same thing. I have done this several times but it won't take it! Checking the install disc is ok no fault. Thoughts?

How can you be so sure?
First off, if you don't have at least 256 MB of RAM, upgrade the RAM*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
    According to:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2191?viewlocale=en_US
The only 10.4 disc that will work with any MDD is the retail one which looks like * and does not say Upgrade, DropIn, or OEM.
If you are using the correct disc, verify the drive you have in your system is indeed a DVD drive. If it is a DVD drive, verify the clock battery has been replaced in the last 4 years.
If the clock battery has been replaced, zap the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If zapping the PRAM doesn't work, then you may have to clean the optical drive, or replace it.

  • Upgrade Panther to Tiger

    Dear all
We are currently running 10.3.9 and need to update some software. Therefore we need to upgrade the OS system.
I am concerned upgrading from Panther to Leopard will cause problems and would rather update to Tiger.
Could anyone advise me on the process and if my concerns are valid.
Would anyone suggest differently and think Panther is the best option.
Any links to further information or advice would be really useful.
    Many thanks in advance.

    sarah:
Your iMac G5 will easily meet both the minimum system requirements for Tiger and the technical specifications for Leopard. So you can go either way. Your computer will support up to 2 GB - 184-pin PC-3200 (400MHz) DDR SDRAM, but your 1 GB will work well for you, unless you decide to upgrade.
The main concern at this point would be whether you have third party applications that may not be supported by Leopard. In terms of which way to go, costwise the installation software for either OS will cost about the same, so, if everything else seems in order, you may be ahead going for Leopard.
Please do post back with further questions, or any specific concerns you may have.
    Good luck.

  • Upgrading Panther to Tiger & iPhoto 4 to iPhoto 6

I did a complete bootalble carbon copy backup of my Mac HD to an External HD. Did a "erase and Install"(erase Mac HD, and clean install of Tiger). Installed iPhoto 6. BTW, I changed user names on the new install cuz my wife never uses the mac and I go tired of trying to maintain two user accounts while using Panther. New user name is Jerry. Old user name was Shari. I have admin. priveledges onto old Back up Ext. HD as well as new installed tiger on mac hd.
Everything has been going pretty well. Got he network and printers going. Reinstalled misc programs like Elements, and Canon Scanner, without problem. Imported iTunes music.
I am having trouble bringing the iPhoto 4 pictures from my external HD into the iPhoto 6 Mac HD. I tried iPhoto's "Import to Library" from the External to the internal HD, but just got a spinning gear and had to cancel. I tried dragging the iphoto 4 Library to the iPhoto 6 library, but the pictures don't show up in iphoto 6 and now i'm afraid I mucked things up in my pictures>iPhoto Library. There is another iPhoto below the iPhoto Library.
    ie. pictures>iphoto library>iphoto library>(all my iphoto 4 picts from 2000 thru 2006 + albums, etc.)
I've read of holding down the option key while opening iphoto library folder below iPhoto library and it gives me the option of Create or choose library, but I really don't know if this is what I need. What I want is to basically restore my iPhoto 4 pictures on the External Drive to iPhoto 6 on my Mac HD. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Jerry:
To get the old library up and running on the new computer all you need to do is copy that iPhoto Library folder intact into the Pictures folder on your new computer. Then reset the ownership and permissions on that folder and its contents as follows:
Setting Permissions for iPhoto Library Folder
1 - Select the iPhoto Library folder and type Command-I.
2 - When the Info window comes up go to the Ownership and Permissions section and make sure You have Read & Write permission and that the Owner and Group have Read & Write also. Others - Read Only.
3 - Then click on the "Apply to enclosed items..." button.
Now when you launch iPhoto 6 it will tell you it needs to update the library. Go ahead and do so. That should give you a V6 library.

  • Why upgrade from Panther to Tiger on G4 iMac?

I have two iMacs. I use a G5 recently upgraded from Panther to Leopard 10.5.5. My wife has a G4 with Panther 10.3.9.
Now that I have Leopard I have a Tiger install license available.
Are there good reasons to upgrade my wife's G4 to Tiger?
She uses it heavily for e-mail, internet, and MS Word.
She's networked to my G5 through Airport and we use printer sharing and file sharing.
Her G4 works great, but I'm wondering about security issues.
    Comments?
    -Bob

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Apple is still releasing Security updates for Panther too, isn't it?
I think some of the Panther software is starting to show its age limitations for Internet capabilities, and things like iTunes for all the new iPods, etc. On one hand if you're not actually having problems then my feeling is an old computer best runs software designed for it. On the other hand I am not sure you would lose any functionality if you did upgrade. I think most Panther applications run on Tiger, the system requirements are pretty similar. It's not like when you upgrade to Leopard that you suddenly lose Classic support and it requires (demands?) a faster processor. From my personal perspective upgrading to Leopard really makes a big difference in capabilities both ways and may even be a negative upgrade if you run old software the way I do. Upgrading from Panther to Tiger didn't have any downsides and had several upsides in terms of software is still being brought out for Tiger.

  • Upgrading iMac G3 400 DVD slot-loader to Tiger

My iMac's hard drive is dying and have purchased a brand new Seagate Barracuda 7200 8MB cache 120GB ATA IDE hard drive on eBay to replace it (haven't received it yet). Also am going to replace the PRAM battery and add 256MB of RAM. The Mac currently only has 64MB of RAM in it!! Will add more RAM when I can afford to...
I have checked the System Profile before the hard drive gives up the ghost and the firmware will need updated. The Mac has OS 9.0 on it. Had to buy a OS 9.0 full version disk on eBay (to install on the new drive) and happened to find the 9.2.1 update CD at a garage sale last year! Have downloaded the 9.2.2 update from the Apple website.
After I replace the hard drive and install OS 9.0, the 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates and the firmware update, here is my question:
Can Tiger be installed after the above installations, or would I have to install Jaguar (that's the other version of OS X I have on hand) before Tiger can be installed?
I want to use the iMac as an "all-in-one" DVD player for the most part. Tried playing a DVD on it before the factory hard drive started messing up again, but it couldn't find the video card or something. Am sure the hard drive is losing files as it's slowly dying...
    Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It's far better to start your own thread then resurrect one from the end of last year - if you do you'll get several opinions.
10.2.8 is a useable OS and if you have no legacy OS9 applications then you don't need to keep the OS 9 System Folder or Applications (the former of which allows OS X to run Classic mode). Just delete them. Before you delete OS 9 boot in to it ( Apple Menu > System Preferences... > Startup Disk ) and ensure that you have installed this firmware update (link). Technically it is required prior to OS X but will cause serious harm if you go above 10.2.8 without it. After that you can delete OS 9.
This iMac is going to be a pretty lean and not so mean iMovie machine. You might wish to consider giving her the full 1Gb of RAM and 128Gb Hard Drive.

  • Upgrading from 9.2.2 to either Panther or Tiger

I am needing to upgrade my iMac from OS 9.2.2 to either Panther or Tiger. I realize I need more memory, probably. I have 7GB available on my hard drive. Which would be best for me?

craftymac, with your 400 MHz G3 processor you are at the bare minimum for QuickTime 7 and below the minimum for iTunes 6 so you should probably not go beyond Panther 10.3.9 and if you don't have built-in FireWire that's another reason not to go to Tiger. It sounds like you have a slot-loader so you'll need to update the Firmware if you haven't already done so.

  • Printer doesn't work after Panther to Tiger upgrade

After upgrading from Panther to Tiger my usb connected Canon PIXMA iP5000 printer no longer works. In printer setup utility when I click "add" I see the ip5000 but the "Print Using" dialog box says "please select a driver or printer model". In the drop down list under Canon there is no driver listed that corresponds to my iP5000 (also, only gimp-print drivers are listed for some reason).
I reinstalled the printer software from the disk that came with the printer but still nothing relevant appears in the list under Canon. I installed a newer OSX driver from the Canon website but still nothing relevant (and still only the gimp-print drivers in the list under Canon).
Using the finder search function I located a file called ip5000.ppd on the hard drive. I selected this file in the "Print Using" dialog box and was then able to add the printer. When I try to print though nothing comes out of the printer.
I installed a driver from www.printfab.com for the iP5000. This works fine but apparently I have to buy a license for $61 to use the software?
Can anyone out there tell me what's going on? Why is the driver from the Canon web site not showing up under the Canon tab in the printer setup utility? Any idea where it is or what file extension it should have so I can search for it?
    Thanks,
    Stickman007
    imac G5 PowerPC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

In step 3, I moved the contents of the BJPrinters
folder to the desktop instead of deleting them
    (deleting is so final).
We need to delete and empty the trash. It seems that for some setups, leaving the files on the system (including the trash) interferes with the new driver installation/operation.
In step 4, the only file that seemed close to what
you mentioned was CanonPrinterDrivers.pkg. I moved
    it to the desktop also.
This is the original package included with the OS for the Canon BJ drivers we are deleting. In case you ever need to add an old Canon driver then it would be best to put this file back. But it is odd that there is no other Canon package. I expected there to be one for the iP5000 that you installed.
The result was the same as before - when I try to add
the printer the "Print Using" menu still shows a
greyed out "please select a driver of printer model".
The Canon folder still shows the same gimp-print
options, none of which are related to the iP5000.
Yes. The iP5000 won't appear in the list as it hasn't been written to do so. As I said before, the driver, upon detection of the printer, adds the printer to the list. You cannot browse to it.
Let me know if you have any other ideas (or if I need
to delete the files rather than just move them to the
    desktop).
So, I think you need to do the steps again, this time delete the contents of the CanonBJ folder and empty it from the trash. The thing I would add this time is turn off the iP5000 (unplug the power cord but leave the USB connected) at Step 6 (you may need to shutdown rather than restart the Mac). Then start the Mac, install the latest driver (which is v4.1.9) do the disk permissions and then, before you open the Printer Setup Utility, reconnect the power cord to the printer. Hopefully now the driver will detect the printer and add it to the list.

  • Intalling Panther or Tiger on an imac G3

    Hello,
I have a Blueberry color Imac G3 which was made in spring of 2000. I recently bought a new ibook and want to upgrade the older mac as my sister is now using it. I asked this ? a long time back but am requesting any further help you can give. The imac has 640 of ram and the Hardrive is 30 gig. There's almost nothing taking up any HD space and almost all is available. This mac is mostly used to surf the net. I do however want to install either Panther or Tiger on this unit. The person who responded before said to use a retail version for a full install. Also, would either Panther or Tiger work on this mac?
Lastly, what does the install involve??
    Thanks very much
    1bookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    omshanti:
I am not familiar with your computer, but it should easily support Panther, maybe even Tiger. Here are the basic requirements:
    -Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    -Built-in USB
-At least 128MB of physical RAM
-Built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
In terms of installation, here are some suggestions to Archive and install. If you choose to do a clean install see note below:
    Panther: Archive and Install
If you do not have a Full Retail Version you can get one on eBay relatively inexpensively.
If you have the right disks here is what you do.
    1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any apps you can't afford to lose.
    2. Check to see if you have the latest Firmware Update: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
    3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
    4. Once booted go to the Installer Menu and open Disk Utility.
    5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
    9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    NOTE (below):
    To do a clean install:
Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
    a. In Disk Utility select your HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    b. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    c. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. (Note: This procedure will erase the contents of your entire HDD. Be sure you have anything you want saved backed up.Select option to zero all data. Click OK. Click Erase. This process may take a while, so this is a good time to take a walk or call your mother
    d. After HDD is erased resume at No. 7 above.
Post back with any questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • IMac DV/400 will not read CD's since I installed Panther

    Hi,
A customer's iMac DV/400 with 384 MB RAM was running OS 9.2.2. We decided to upgrade his OS to 10.3 (firmware was already up to date 4.19) After the first CD finished and it restarted and asked for disk 2, it would no longer read ANY CD's. In fact I had to cancel the rest of the install, because it wouldn't even recognize disk 2. What can be done to fix this? nothing has changed except the OS. I made the Mac boot from the old 9.2.2 again and the CD's read fine.
    HELP!

If the DV ROM works with OS 9.2.2 then there is nothing wrong with it. Try installing Panther again. What is the size of the hard drive? Does it have enough free space?

  • G5 killed by mail when upgrading from Panther to Tiger...HELP!

    Hello,
I just upgraded one of our G5s from Panther to Tiger. When I opened mail, it began "importing" all the messages (I assume because of the update to mail.app). Now, the user who's computer I upgraded contained 9GB of mail (!!!) but the G5 had more than enough space for this. When the "importing" completes, mail.app is open and all folders/subfolders, etc. are there, but the program doesn't contain any of the messages from the import. Every folder/subfolder is empty, the inbox is empty, etc. AND, to top it off, the HD of the G5 now has zero free space (while, when before the import, it had at least 40GB of free space). Does anyone know a fix for this? Has this happened before?
    Regards,
    Kristin.

OPEN LETTER TO THE MAIL 2.0 CODING TEAM. RSVP.
with thanks to DAVID GIMENO GOST, for answering so many people's posts about all the mail 2.0 bugs.
    hi guys,
i love all things apple, and i have done for twenty years.
but with respect, your build of mail 2.0 really could be a lot better.
moving my mail from 1.0 on an ibook g3 running os X 10.3.9, over to mail 2.0 on an intel macbook 1.83 running os X 10.4.7 has been a nightmare.
the discussion boards of many mac sites feature countless cases of people making the move from 1.0 to 2.0, with all their e-mails disappearing.
having spent two weeks reading the knowledge forums, and learning about emailchemy, plus all the complications which, even with that third party program, still exist in moving one's mail over from version 1.0 over to 2.0, are both massive and horrendous.
and that's for me, who has twenty years of finding my way around mac bugs.
but this one is the most difficult i've ever seen, as well as being one of the most widespread problems in a FULL VERSION RELEASE of an apple program, which apple has done nothing to resolve during the six months in which this problem has been widespread in the mac community worldwide.
so thank god for DAVID GIMENO GOST !
i'm amazed that apple still hasn't come up with a patch for moving mail from 1.0 to 2.0.
even now, while i've finally got all my mail back today, 95% is showing as unread, due to the last obstacles in the process, which i can no longer face solving.
i've also lost hundreds of red mail flags during the transfer :o(.
    PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, guys:
we shouldn't need to be buying third party software to move our e-mails from apple mail 1.0 up to apple mail 2.0, and even then be faced by massive hurdles to overcome, which take weeks for someone who at least has SOME idea of what he's doing.
i pity all the people who read the numerous forum posts about how difficult it is to transfer their mail from 1.0 to 2.0, and simply give up on the spot, and have to start their e-mail history TODAY, unable to access their previous e-mail again - potentially now for ever.
because the ironic joke is that we can't even have an access copy of mail 1.0 on our macs to read our old e-mails, unless we hack that program out of the 10.3 cd installation set, which the gurus on your own web site recommend us NOT to do !
so what are we supposed to do, to access our old e-mail, which we can't open, even though YES, it is in our mail folder, and YES, we did full rebuilds of every mail folder, and YES, we trashed our mail preferences first.
e-mail is now at the very center of the average mac user's digital life.
a user's most important program should not require countless hours scrolling through the astonishing number of problems within mail 2.0, which the apple.com discussion boards evidence, with new problems being added every day.
please sort this out, and build a patch, for the sanity of the many people who love apple, but who are unable to access any of their old e-mails.
because i wouldn't wish the last fortnight on anyone else.
    RSVP, APPLE.
with best wishes to everyone on the infinity loop,
    michael thorne
