Upgrade paranoia revisited
This is an update to my "upgrade paranoia" posted several days ago.
I tried an upgrade installation from 10.3.9 to 10.4 using the DVDs I bought at the Apple store. (Probably should have used archive and restore!)
Installation went smoothly. When I did the restart we got to the apple screen and the spinning "clock" that appears during start up, which spun and spun and eventually I got the international "not" sign (circle with line diagonally). The spinner kept spinning.
I did a restore from my backup on a firewire drive and am now running 10.3.9 again. An interesting morning and nothing accomplished!
So any advice?
I did a macJanitor, disk utility, and DiskWarrior run before the install.
I have a G4 400 with an 800MHz Sonnet upgrade. Sonnet requested that I install a "Sonnetcache" installation for 10.4 which I did prior to the upgrade.
I have a Radeon 9000 Mac edition (not the card the machine came with). I think I have the latest update for their driver, but will check again.
I've got two hard drives.
Any thoughts welcomed.
G4 400Mz 800 MHz upgrade Mac OS X (10.3.9) 1G memory
Several possibilities. First, if you did not repair the hard drive and permissions prior to your upgrade then that's a likely reason why the upgrade failed.
Further, I would remove your processor and video card, replace them with the originals. Connect only your original keyboard and mouse. Repair the hard drive and permissions then upgrade.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. If all is OK you can proceed with the OS X installation.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now, if it were up to me I would recommend you not do an Upgrade install this time. Instead do an Archive and Install. Select the option to preserve the users and network preferences. Your drive will not be erased and your old system will be archived in a Previous System Folder. A fresh copy of OS X will be installed.

[SOLVED] VAIO brightness no longer working after upgrade
Hi I used to set brightness on my VAIO VPCCAS1E, via...
xfce4 -> fn keys
i3 -> "echo 5 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"
none of them are working after having upgraded the system yesterday. I have checked the news and done my -Syu accordingly.

[S]Systemd can't start Load Kernel Modules after upgrade to Linux 4.0
After upgrading from linux 3.19.3-3 to 4.0.1-1 I've been having a bit of an issue. At that same time I upgraded readline (6.3.006-1 → 6.3.008-1), linux-firmware (20150206.17657c3-1 → 20150410.ec89525-1), nvidia (349.16-1 → 349.16-2) , wpa_suplican (2.4-1 → 1:2.3-1), and arpack (3.1.5-1 → 3.2.0-1). There may be some typos there since I'm copying by hand. Normally this wouldn't be much of a problem because I have been, priory to a few weeks ago, really good about back ups and would just roll my OS back 15 minutes. But things like that tend to fly out the window when the semester gets heavy. My last snapshot was on May 22nd, which I could still use, but would rather not. Also, it seems like a good idea to try to actual fix things for a change.
[edit] I should mention that this upgrade was run April 30th.[/edit]
When I finished booting the system after the upgrade, I got an error message during boot “systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.” When it finished booting I run “dmesg -l err” to confirm that I'm not having a bad day dream or something. I'm also still seeing the errors that I described in this thread. Don't know if the two are related. I also noticed, when I was logging in, that it said that my stystem was still using the old kernel. Indeed, according to “uname -r” I'm still using 3.19.3-3-ARCH.
The closest thing to experience I have with this is when I forget to mount /boot before upgrading linux, so I made sure /boot was mounted and rand “sudo pacman -S linux” to reinstall, but this didn't help. Just to check I ran “ls /lib/modules” and see the directorys “4.0.1-1-ARCH” and “extramodules-4.0-ARCH” as I would expect after a succesful upgrade of the kernel.
Running “systemctl –failed, shows that in addition to systemd-modules-load.service, lm_sensors.service has also failed. I somehow expect lm_sensors depends on systemd-modules-load. I tried “systemctl restart systemd-modules-load”, but was rewarded with a message telling me that it failed. The “journalctl -xe” log has the lines
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
Looking at the Wiki for Systemd under troubleshooting it actually has an example of trying to work through this exact issue. Following that I tried
journalctl _PID=1799
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
which I already mentioned. At this point that bit of the Wiki stopped being useful.
Looking up on Google Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented returned this thread from two years ago. Running “lsmod |grep sg” or $lsmod |grep nfs” returns nothing, but it also returns nothing on this laptop I'm using as well, so I don't imagine that is useful. Also, “# grep nfs /lib/modules/4.0.1-1-ARCH/modules.alias” returns a “Nosuch file or directory” error.
Searching for something on 'sg' turned up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165361, which was also not useful.
As a sort of last resort I tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel
I reboot and boot into my fallback installation, running 3.19.3-3, mount the partition with my main Arch on it, and arch-chroot into it.
I downgraded linux, and nvidia, exited chroot, and rebooted hoping to the Great Bacon that I didn't do anything too damaging. After all, my back ups are more than a week out of date.
This worked. I'm still getting those annyoing (they are only annoying right?) error messages I mentioned earlier. My system seems fine, if somewhat out of date.
Still, the question remains, “why did that happen, and how do I actually fix it?”
[edit2=solution]
There were two problems. First, my grub.cfg entry was pointing to the wrong UUID. I fixed this by regenerating it. Then I noticed the UUID in the grub menu itself (during the boot prosses) did not match what was in grub.cfg. To fix this I reinstalled grub.
Last edited by nstgc (2015-05-05 12:07:30)Well, I took snapshots, not back ups but they work well enough for this, and rsynced /boot/ to where it use to be, moved/renamed the subvolume boot, and commented out the appropriate line in fstab. I also deleted that other /boot from before. I unmount /boot, and regenerate my grub.cfg. If my machine still boots, I'll try for an upgrade.
grub.cfg now looks like
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE

# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

It seems as if the lines you mentioned, Scimmia, have changed. I'll take that as a good sign.
[edit] System still boots. Trying for the upgrade.
[edit2] Still can't use Linux 4.0. I'm getting the same errors as before.
[edit3] Successfully downgraded.
[edit4] I looked through /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and there isn't anything in there that isn't in my laptop's. I don't know if this will help, but here is the output of "pacman -Q"

[edit5] My /etc/modules-load.d directory is empty by the way, and "sudo /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load" returns nothing. Note, this is all while running Linux 3.19, but I believe it should demonstrate that I don't have any special modules running. Or so I believe.

How do I get iChat 3 working ? Upgrade hints:FAQ
Trouble Shooting Revisited
Ok We will start with loading Tiger and iChat version 3.0
From Panther
There are or were serveral Add-ons and applications avaiblable to Panther users of iChat that are not compatible with iChat 3.
These following need to be deleted.
iCAR - An Add-on that posts an Auto response Away message (produces a 1 fps result in a Video chat)
Virex for Panther - An Anti Virus app avialable to @mac account users (Produces the 1 fsp problem)
iChatUSBCam for Panther/iChat2.x - A Add-on utility for using iSight or USB cam with iChat2.x (Incompatible with Tiger/iChat 3)
iProfile - An Add-on for producing a profile on the AIM server that ichat 2.x could not do (not proven to be a problem but now not needed).
A clean install of Tiger (not Archive and Install) produces the best results.
But any install should also check these Tiger settings.
First, UPGRADE to 10.4.3 as this gets past many Connection issues that became apparent with the basic Tiger (10.4) and iChat 3.0 It updates iChat to version 3.1
Check Settings
Don't be complacent that you have not set anything different.
There are several new things in Tiger that may trip you up.
These are worth looking at:
Mac Firewall. Now includes the ability to Block all UDP traffic in the Advanced button (System Preferences > Sharing >Firewall tab then the Advanced Button).
Also can now open UDP protocol for ports where as the Panther one only did TCP (Check any old Panther settings you Added to the presets).
The ports should be:
TCP -5190
UDP -5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
There are more ports for Bonjour 5297, 5298, 5353 UDP and 5298 TCP and Jabber, 5220, 5222, 5223 on TCP)
(Table View see 7th Sept)
QuickTime. This has a change in the name of the Connection Speed tab to Streaming (System Preferences > QuickTime) Check this is set to be equal to your connection speed (the download one if this is faster). See Apple Doc 301641 Dated 9th November 2005.
Date & Time. Not conclusively involved but worth eliminating. Set a Network Server and the correct Time Zone.
Apple Remote Desktop. If this is active in System Preferences > Sharing > Services tab it causes problems for iChat.
Next, test the actual speed you are getting from your ISP.
http://www.dslreports.com/stest
There is a table here of the speeds you need:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301050
The one you get linked to in the Help menu is wrong.
Other Known Problems
There are several other applications that iChat 3 does not seem to like.
folding@home This is a application that uses spare processor time to help find protein chains for a University.
PostgreSQL This is a data base application that can be reset to allow more processor time for iChat. See here http://www.murraywilliams.com/blog/archives/000046.html
Lotus Notes Some people have reported problems with this.
Make sure any Add-on Video cards or input PCI cards have up to date Firmware
IF you are still having problems I would do Routine Maintenance Tasks as laid out here.
Lastly, some routers/modems are SIP aware and give different results in iChat 3 compared to iChat 2.
This is due to the Operating System changing (like a new computer connecting to the modem) rather than iChat.
See My web pages: page4 at the SIP Text in a Box section.
Also for the above try some housekeeping particularly if you do not keep your Computer on 24/7 Gulliver, "kmosx3: Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance"

in anycase, trye starting one app before the other to see which combination works., other wise i think more apps will fall out of sync with old logic pro -
How can I upgrade my G3, 640 Ram, 500 MHz, with OS 10.2.8
Hi all,
I'm revisiting my old iBook, described above in Subject line. (Wow, it's been a while. Now use an iMac and MacBookPro. This little lovely is so slow!)
1. What is the newest OS that I might upgrade it to?
2. Right now, the wireless icon in upper right shows black rings--meaning it is picking up a signal--but it won't connect to the internet. I get an error message that says it can't find the particular server (no matter what address I insert). For example, it can't find http://www.apple.com.
Can anyone help out with these two issues?
Thanks!Roam and Ronda, thank you so much for getting back so quickly.
Ronda, your post really hit the nail on the head for me. Trying to think out the problem, I thought it might be that I'm using an Airport Extreme now. I will look at the documentation or the app and see how to allow earlier cards to make contact via mixed mode.
Also Roam--long ago, I bought 10.4.1 for an earlier upgrade. I tried to upgrade my dual USB but can't get there. Upon clicking the restart button to proceed (as it requests at the initial screen when just opened), it restarts and I get a dark grey screen with a lot of confusing text (some overlayed). Some about kernal, some in various languages telling me it can't find a driver and I must reboot . . . .
But no way to get out except to shut down. Then found a way to eject the disk on startup. Yikes.
Per your thought, I don't have to upgrade if I can get wireless to work. I'd like to give this iBook to my sister-in-law who simply wants to do research on the web. I'm hoping Safari will work fast enough to be of use to her. But I have a feeling things will be slow. We've come so far over the past 9 years! I worry this may be more painful than useful to her . . . .
Thanks again, both of you!! Enjoy this day. -

And dont have any sound anymore, nowhere. PulseAudio is just ignoring my sound-card completely and KDE/GNOME System settings tell me that i do not even have any soundcard
Alsamixer detects the soundcard fine and if i unmute the soundcard there, it works. But its not really comfortable to change the volume with Alsamixer. Also i have no ability to change between HDMI and Analog.
Any idea what could have cause this? As you can see in the logs, there havent been any major kernel update nor pulseaudio update.
This is the Soundcard: Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
Kernel Module is snd_hda_intel which is loaded and working
Seems like Pulseaudio is not running at all, it also does not start with the message "E: [pulseaudio] core-util.c: Home directory not accessible: Permission denied" which is not true
Last edited by Vamp898 (2014-01-26 15:29:22)Ok, found out it was true.
Seems like whatever reason i have to find out reset some files (not all) to root, so i was no longer the owner of some random files for whatever reason.
Works now. -
9.2 Client Upgrade Necessary?
Hello all,
I'm working in a large group, and a decsion has been made to upgrade the SERVER from 9.0 to 9.2. Is it absoluetely necessary (from a JDBC standpoint) to upgrade the CLIENTs on all the dev machines?
In the past, the upgrades haven't mattered all that much... I just wnated to make sure.
Thanks,
StuMy understanding is that you need to upgrade at least the version of the JDBC driver (which may or may not entail an Oracle client upgrade). The JDBC drivers are backwards compatible, but not necessarily forward compatible as I understand it.
Realistically, you probably won't have any problems running 9.0 JDBC drivers against a 9.2 database, but I tend to err on the side of paranoia.

Database performance is poor after upgrading to 9i
hi Guys
My system was upgraded to 9i by the third party after that I took over from that and I am getting the continuous complaints regarding performance of Database.
there are 150 Users who connects using citrix , from different locations and DB size is 20 GB.
this is my Init Ora file

I feel SGA size and Sort area size are not correct if we increase the value of both will it solve some my problem
AbhiI have run the some scripts to check the performance

Trouble Shooting Revisited.
First, UPGRADE to 10.4.2 as this gets past many Connection issues that became apparent with the basic Tiger (10.4) and iChat 3.0 It updates iChat to version 3.0.1
<table border=1; cellpadding=5><Tr><td colspan=3; align=center>Tiger TCP and UDP Ports For Mac Firewall</td></tr><tr><td align=center>Method</td><td align=center>TCP Ports</td><td align=center>UDP Ports</td></Tr><tr><td>iChat over AIM</td><td>5190</td><td>5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403</td></tr><tr><td>Bonjou</td><td>5298</td><td>5297, 5298, 5353</td></tr><tr><td>Jabber</td><td>5220, 5222, 5223</td><td></td></tr><tr><td>All Ports</td><td>5190, 5220, 5222, 5223, 5298</td><td>5060, 5297, 5298, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403</td></tr></table>
QuickTime. This has a change in the name of the Connection Speed tab to Streaming (System Preferences > QuickTime) Check this is set to be equal to your connection speed (the download one if this is faster).
Thread on Miglia.

+9/18/08 9:42:14 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (org.openldap.slurpd) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds+
The cycle repeats every 11 seconds or so. This has only started since a 10.5.5 upgrade. Any ideas?I've revisited my setup, this is a production server for a small business so I don't get much opportunity to access it, to check that it is still configured as originally set up. The server is configured as master, it does not replicate with any other servers, though I did enable replication for a backup server some time ago this should not still be in place. Can anyone give me some pointers as to which config files I should look at to find potential replicas?

Library upgraded from 1.5 2.0 not fully functional?
after installing 2.0 (prior to the 2.0.1 patch) i reset the library path to one of my old 1.5 libraries. restarted and it asked if i wanted to upgrade. i said sure and let it do its thing. when all was done and referenced images were tied back to their masters (had done some reorganization while still in 1.5 when i left Aperture for Lightroom). i started going through the library and revisiting some of the photos i hadn't seen in awhile. this was an old library that i was more testing 2.0 with since i had read all the horror stories about people losing full libraries.
most of the functionality is available for my images in 2.0. i say most because i opened one of my images and decided to open the exposure a little and i knew that i could save the blown out bits that i knew would come in with the recovery slider BUT... the recovery slider was greyed out so was the black point slider. this is the same on all the images. all of the images are linked to their master RAW file referenced on an external drive.
i do have some images that i loaded directly from card to AP 2.0 and they do have recovery and black point. thought this was a little strange. anyone else running into this? is there a way around it?Sure. You're using the old RAW conversion algorithm... 1.1 or 1.0. You can't use the new adjustments with these photos.
Change the RAW conversion to 2.0... it's in the top box under RAW conversion settings. You can bulk convert images with the "migrate" command -- be aware this may substantially change how the images look as it's a totally different RAW pipeline. But once you've done that, the new adjustments will be available. -
I have two 6509's each with an RSM. The RSM is running IOS 12.1, 121-2.E to be exact. The supervisor (Sup1a) is running version 6.1(4).
Should these be upgraded as a matter of course, or, are they fine as is ?For any network infrastructure, one should baseline and periodically evaluate the running software. Consistency across like platforms and being on a supported current release are two good criterion one should meet (besides the obvious of having a release that meets your needs). Any inconsistency should be for validated reasons that are documented and revisited at the next review cycle.
New releases include not just bug fixes, but also features (the whole purpose of Cisco "T" (technology) train software releases).
One other thing to consider in the specific situation you describe is the possibility of moving off of hybrid (CatOS on the Sup + IOS on the MSFC) to a native IOS image. Many folks find the native integration of the switchs layer 2 and layer 3 functionality to be a more intuitive configuration. -
Firewire is gone after upgrading!
I updated OSX Panther on my Powermac G5 to Tiger today and after that I upgraded FCP4.5 to FCP5. But now FCP can't play back any video through firewire and iTunes doesn't recognize my iPod (an oldie with firewire). I tried everything in FCP but it doesn't 'see' my camera connected with Firewire.
Any thoughts anyone?

Unless you get a better answer elsewhere, you could try a firewire reset -
from Mike Mihalik, LaCie
"Seems like the FireWire issue needs to be revisited quite often. Here is my often repeated suggestion which appears to clear up many FireWire issues: reset the FireWire ports. Panther has a Finder Preference to show mounted volumes on the Desktop. You must set this for mounted drives to be visible. Please follow these instructions to reset your FireWire port.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
Here is a summary:
* shut down and disconnect all external drives and peripherals ; make sure nothing is connected to the FireWire ports
* use Apple Disk Utility to repair permissions on your internal boot drive
* shut down and disconnect the AC power from the computer as well as the drives; if laptop, also remove battery
* let sit unpowered and unconnected for 15 minutes
* reconnect AC power to only the computer (battery too if laptop)
* restart computer
* verify that FireWire ports are visible within Apple System Profiler
* reconnect FireWire drive (only one); refresh window within Apple System Profiler to rescan the FireWire bus; confirm that drive is visible
* confirm drive is OK by using Apple Disk Utility and apply First Aid
* repeat for other drives, one at a time" -
I am in external hard drive **** - someone please help!
I use my external hard drive as my music drive, and since upgrading to mountain lion something has gone wrong, and I have no idea what.
Basically it is incredibly slow at everything - appearing in finder, showing its contents, and copying from or to it. This is a problem that has only happened since my upgrade. I have tried to verify and repair it, but each time this happens it simply tells me every thing is OK! The only message I get is
'Updating boot support partitions as required.'
But this happens each time! I have no idea what this means (i am happy in my ignorance about computers most of the time)
I dont think that there is a problem with my hard drive, because I have seen the speed of my USB memory stick reduce in this time too, and if I leave it connected for long enough, it eventually finds all my files and folders and I can use them just fine. Its as if my USB ports speeds have all degraded very fast, for no particular reason. It has to be something to do with mountain lion...
Anyway, any ideas guys and gals? Please help me!Basically I thought that mackeeper would keep everything nice and clean...
That's what the con-artist developer wants you to think, and it's the exact opposite of the truth.
How to maintain a Mac
1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.
3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cleaners,” “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this kind of material is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
The free anti-malware application ClamXav is not crap, and although it’s not routinely needed, it may be useful in some environments, such as a mixed Mac-Windows enterprise network.
4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most users don't.
5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Mac notebooks that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
Use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.
6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” “running periodic scripts,” “deleting log files,” “scanning for viruses,” or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are for solving problems as they arise, not for maintenance.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it. -
Upgrading from 10.3 on my iBook G4 800mhz
Hi all,
I would like to be able to use Flash 10 on my iBook, so I need to upgrade to 10.4 or 10.5. I'm having trouble getting either installed from the disks I have.
I have a 10.5 retail install disk, but it refuses to install on the iBook (it's apparently 67 mhz too slow).
I also have a set of Mac mini system install disks with 10.4 on them. (I bought a mini with 10.4 on it, then got a 10.5 upgrade for it.)
When I boot the iBook from the mini install disks, I get a kernel panic ("Can't find <something> for Powerbook6,3"). Not really surprising.
The next thing I tried was to put the iBook in disk target mode and hook it up to the mini via FireWire. It shows up on the desktop just fine. However, the 10.4 installer says it can't install the OS to that drive. It doesn't say why, it just shows a stop sign badge on the iBook's drive.
I guess I have a couple of questions.
1) Can anyone come up with some suggestions for getting either 10.4 or 10.5 installed on the iBook G4 with this setup? I also have a 30 gig iPod with Firewire and an external Firewire 250gb drive that might be helpful. There's also a 500gb USB drive on the mini which I use for Time Machine, but it doesn't work on the iBook (the iBook thinks it isn't formatted).
2) Are there any licensing issues? I know I shouldn't run 10.5 on the iBook without a second copy of the software, but what about the 10.4 software? I'm not running a copy of that on any machines anywhere, so it seems like I should be able to legally put it on the iBook. Can anyone confirm or deny?
Thanks,

So, not having a Combo or Superdrive in an early iBook may limit
the ability for it to have Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard 10.5.x installed.
Limited availability of Tiger 4-CD installer sets as part of Apple's
exchange program keeps some demand on the few out there high;
but a bootable FireWire optical superdrive could be used to install.
This would require a full retail installer; not a machine specific one.
And some machines which shipped with a Combo drive, but did not
have their original OS on DVD won't boot from OS X installer DVDs.
This is a limited occurrence, but I have found it to be true in some.
Or the later system may require a superdrive to burn featured content
to DVD media, such as some iLife & other apps need to for support.
Another issue, a machine specific installer is a limited version of the
OSX in question and can't adaptively put the correct parts into another
computer series or model than the one it was intended for.
Depending on the iBook's specifications, and those of the Mac Mini,
you could use an optical DVD drive to put a correct full retail install
of Tiger on the iBook, that has been documented online, where a
PPC machine has been able to install to a FireWire TDM PPC from
a PPC, by using correct full retail install discs. Not machine-specific.
Some of the hack-type of blogs and web sites out there have noted
some workarounds where the appropriate software installers were
used and correctly among suitable hardware configurations; many
of these kinds of articles would be fairly old, unless revisited by new
questions by those attempting these same steps three years later.
In any event...
Good luck & happy computing!
