Upgrade PE6/Win to PE8/Mac - load old catalog into Bridge?

I've been successfully using Photoshop Elements 6 on XP for some time. But, I'm shifting my main machine from PC to Mac, and as part of that move I just bought Photoshop Elements 8 for the Mac. Right now, I'm accessing the existing photos via a shared folder from the XP machine, so the folder structure is the same on both. Of course, I've got metadata for the pics on the PC, mostly star ratings. Is there any way to take the catalog from Organizer on the XP machine and import it into Bridge on the Mac? If I can't, it won't be a heartbreaker, but it sure would be nice.

No, sorry. Bridge is a browser, not an asset management system; it keeps no database, just shows you the current state of the folder you point it to. What you can do is to make tags for your categories, ratings, etc. in windows before exporting the photos to the mac, then use Write tags and properties to Files in the organizer to make metadata keywords out of them (You might also prefer to use psedbtool for this). Then any program that can read metadata can pick up the keywords, although you'll have to re-establish your hierarchies. There are some limitations on doing this--not much good with raw files, for instance--so try it on a couple of images first.

Is there any way to load old messages into your mailbox on a iPhone?
In my mailbox on the iPhone it only shows mails for about one or 2 weeks, but i want all the mails i have in my POP3 mail... is that possible?

When accessing a POP account with an email client, the email client downloads new messages received at the incoming mail server for the account. If these messages downloaded with the email client used on your computer for accessing the account have been removed from the server when downloaded by the email client used on your computer for accessing the account, the messages are no longer available at the incoming mail server for the iPhone's mail client to download.
This is the nature of a POP account. Although a POP account can be accessed with more than one email client, a POP account is designed to be accessed with a single email client only. An IMAP account is designed to be accessed with more than one email client.
If your account were an IMAP account, all messages in the account's Inbox mailbox with the email client used on your computer for accessing the account would be available in the account's Inbox mailbox with the iPhone's mail client. All server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept synchronized with the server automatically with each email client used to access the account. You can also store sent messages on the server with an IMAP account so all sent messages are the same with each email client used to access the account.
This is not possible with a POP account.

Installed PSE12. Loaded PSE10 catalog into organiser but have lost categories & sub categories

The photos appear to have retained their keyword tag info but all the sorting into sub-categories and categories has gone as have all the album and smart album data.
What have I done wrong? After all - no self respecting huge software company removes user data and functionality - they must just have omitted to mention what I needed to do in their (less than impressive) help files.
Any advice gratefully received.

Loaded is good for me (the terminology is not really fixed and clear...) but you have two ways to 'load' your picture files into your catalog:
1 - As you described by using the 'convert' catalog option. The Organizer reads the data in the old catalog and writes it in a new catalog in the new format. The result is that the new PSE12 catalog stores the same data and is renamed to the old catalog name. The old PSE10 catalog is renamed with a -1 suffix, but is still usable in PSE10.

What OS is on your new Mac? I'm doubtful AE CS3 will even run if it's new!
The oldest version of AE that is okay to run on OSX v10.10 (Yosemite) is CS6 (After Effects version 11.0.4).
I'd recommend just upgrading to After Effects CC 2014. It's significantly cheaper than $1,000.00 (think $20 a month or $50 if you want the ENTIRE software suite)
The current version of AE is 13.1.1 - to compare, AE CS3 is version 8.0.2
If I remember correctly, CS3 was the first version of AE that even supported Intel processors on the Mac!
Anyway, in case it might work, the serial numbers should be on the case that the After Effects version 7 discs came in.
If you don't have a serial number on that disc and you were doing some form of online activation, you're in for some more fun! Adobe no longer supports CS2 online activation. Problem loading old files from Bridge (CS6)

just upgraded from CS5 to CS6 (originally had CS3) now when trying to load images which were loaded in 2002 when using CS3 I get an error message 'windows cannot find C:\Program files(x86)\Adobe PhotoshopCS3\Photoshop.exe Make sure you typed the name correctly then try again' I assume that there is an association with a file that no longer exists how can I change this?

I am starting to get the same thing. I had CS3&5 on my PC/Win7/64 desktop, along with CS6. CS3 was loaded, but has been deactivated for some time. I deactivated CS5 yesterday. Everything was running fine. Then, today, I unistalled both suites, 3&5. Now, when I try to open an image, raw or jpg, in Bridge, I get the same response as the OP.
My file assoc. is Photoshop for raw and jpg, but it doesn't list a version, just PS.

I currently have Master Collection 4 for Mac, and Master Collection 4 for Win. I upgraded to CS5 for Win using my CS4 for Win license.
Since it costs less to upgrade from CS5 to 5.5 and Adobe doesn't allow one license key to be flip-flopped between platforms , I am consolidating all my software and am choosing OS X.

The other possibility...and you'd have to act very fast, is to do a platform swap now of CS5. The benefit there would be that you would get to legally have CS5 and CS5.5. If you wait and upgrade to 5.5 using the crossplatform upgrade, you'll need to destroy the old CS5 media and delete the software.
Could come in handy especially for InDesign.

If it were too old, the App Store wouldn't download it.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

Yes. It is called a cross-grade and as far as I know it must be done directly through Adobe sales. There is a process to go through including a letter of destruction which usually entails you sending back the other copy to them or giving them something back proving the destruction process.
After that you get a full version disc for the upgrade price because you cannot use an upgrade version to cross-grade since the Mac serials are different than Windows serials.

You need to find the old profile folder which is not in programs files.

Search your D drive for a file called places.sqlite, there will be a copy of that file in the old profile folder. Once you have found the old profile folder, you can copy the necessary data files to your current profile folder.
