Upgrade Plug-ins error (Cannot Open File)

I was working on a document in CS3 as a final thesis for my masters work. I was using a Blurb template in order to export the file for printing. In between working on the file, one afternoon I could no longer open the file and was met with the follwing error:
Cannot Open File
IMAGE.RPLN
IMAGE FILTERS.RPLN
HYPERLINKS.RPLN
"Cannot open "Masters_book dec.indd".
Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest
versions, or upgrade to the latest version of
Adobe InDesign."
I hadn't changed any other files on my computer or ran any updates. I was simply met with the error when I tried launching the application. After trying to run necessary updates I was still met with the same error message. I downloaded the trial version of CS5 on another machine and tried to open it and was once again met with the above error message. I have a back up of the file that I can use but it still represents a lot of lost work if I have to resort to an old file.

I probably shouldn't dwell, on this, but I can get really worked up over it.
I come from the Cosmos and I can assure you we have sent no "Rays" to your puny Earth Planet today!(*)
Since this concerns a CS3 file and I haven't seen posts of others having the same issue, either with CS3 or with any other version, I have to take it as a One-Time Fluke.
I'm pretty firmly convinced this never happens. There are real problems and even if we only see them once, they are happening hundreds and thousands of times and going unreported and undetected, but they are no less real. In fact, because of the reporting bias towards repeatable problems, they are probably causing added frustration and confusion without being detected or fixed properly. So, IMNSHO, we owe a larger duty to pay attention to so-called "unreproducible" bugs.
(You can imagine how well these conversations with Adobe Support go...)
Of course, in this case, it's probably really hard to find the problem. And since it's effectively an end-of-life'd product that is 3 versions behind the released product and at least 4 versions behind the development product, well, it's hard to lose too much sleep over it.
(*) Yes, I know, this incident would not have been "today." Consider it time dilation.

  • Suddenly getting "Missing Plug-Ins" errors when opening .indd files in InDesign CS2

I have a PC running Windows 7 and InDesign CS2. The laptop's installation of Windows was corrupted and I had to re-install the OS. I backed up all files, reinstalled the OS, and then reinstalled applications. One of those applications was InDesign CS2. However, after the installation of CS2 on the fresh copy of Windows, I noticed that I have trouble opening most, but not all, of the InDesign files on my hard drive.
When I try to open a .indd file I see an error message pop up that says "Missing Plug-ins. LILO.APLN, DYNAMICDOCUMENTS.RPLN, CONDITIONALTEXT.RPLN" and three more. Under that list of missing plugins is the warning "This document uses one or more plug-ins which are not currently available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?"  If I click "okay" I then am met with another dialog box that says "Cannot open file. TEXT.RPLN, LAYER.RPLN" and on and on for about 60 more items.
I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING! I've searched around concerning this issue and it appears the consensus is that the file was opened by a newer version of InDesign. That possibility is, in fact, an impossibility. Never have I used a newer version of InDesign. The files that I am working on were backed up, stored on local storage and not touched once before reinstalling the OS and reinstalling InDesign CS2.
I also noticed that not all InDesign file formats were associated with InDesign in "Windows Programs and Defaults." I changed those to look to InDesign. I've also uninstalled InDesign CS2 and re-installed.
Not all InDesign CS2 files are exhibiting this behavior. So far, it appears more than half are, but some can be opened with no problems. There seems to be no correlation between which ones are able to be opened and which ones can't be opened.
What could have happened to these files and is there any possibility of opened them again? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Conditional Text was a new feature in CS4. I'm thinking, can you explain how your old CS2 documents became aware of it?
    Not exactly sure myself. Abiogenesis?
    [Edit]
Almost forgot. I wrote a script to unequivocally determine the InDesign version a document was last saved as:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4071273
I'll give that a try today. Even an affirmative judgement that the files are newer than CS2 would not impress me however. The fact remains, the files were copied off one hard drive over to another, the plug was pulled on the hard drive, the PC was re-imaged, CS2 was reinstalled, the files were copied back over... and whammo.

  • Just upgraded to Lion and cannot open files on my old SL partition - permissions error

I have just installed Lion on my 2008 MacPro on a new internal HD and cannot open word/text etc  files on the original Snow Leopard disc.  I get a permissions error.  I can preview the file but not open it.  When I do a get info, I can add my user and give it R&W permissions but still cannot open the file.  I have a third disc with just videos and no system and this is OK.
For information my upgrade method was as follows:
Install blank hard disc and fromat it.
Clone original HD onto new drive using CCC
         Give it a new name
Boot from the new clone and go through the lion install
Update the new system to 10.7.4
         Repair disc permissions
Through this method, I have a duplicate set of files on the Lion partition and these I have no problem opening, it is just those on the SL disc.
Any ideas as to how to fix this.  I did the duplication as I still want to be able to boot from SL for some old applications and hardware (a film scanner being one).
    Thanks
    Dave

    Softwater,
Well, I booted back into SL, and as I mentioned, I did have filesharing enabled.  So I added the whole disc as shared and re-booted back into Lion.
Still no luck. I get exactly the same permissions error and cannot open any files.  This seems crazy that from Lion I cannot open files on other bootable partitions.
I added myself as a RW permission on the disc via Get info and still cannot see the files. This is very strange behaviour.  According to get info on the disc, I have full read/write access and on the file itself.
I can see all the files on non-bootable partions.

  • After activating "Click-to-play" plug-ins, I cannot open pdf files.

In the latest release of Firefox, information about how to prevent plug-ins from loading automatically was in the release notes. I activated this in about:config. (Click-to-play).
After that, I cannot open pdf files! When I click on a link all I get is an empty window. Reloading page don't help.
What I can do, is to click on the button next to the awesome bar and set that plug-ins will always load automatically for this page. Then the pdf file loads.
Another work around is to copy the link and paste it in IE.
Is this a bug with "click-to-play"?

Thanks cor-el. I have read the various bug reports and it is indeed the same. Has been known for a while...
Anyway, I find no mention of the work-around: "Click on the button next to the awesome bar and set that plug-ins will always load automatically for this page."
I don't know if there is a place to give that feedback.

  • Plug-ins missing, can open files anyway

I'm using WinXP and CS2(4.0.5). Every time I open a particular doc, I get the following message: "The document uses one or more plug-ins which are not currently available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?" The missing plug-ins are: jpeg filter.rpln, gif filter.rpln, dib import filter.rpln, export manager.rpln.
I see most people in the forums either can't open their docs (not my case) or have had some interaction with CS3 (also not my case).
I do have the option to ignore the error message in the future, but I have to resave the doc as a new doc each time I close it, thus negating that step and restarting the process all over. I have no idea if I used to have these plug-ins and lost them or if I need to find them somewhere. If so, where??
    Any help would be appreciated!

  • Program Error- cannot open file? Please help! I lost my whole project!

When I try to open an animation psd file, I keep getting a box that says my request could not be completed due to a program error. The file is 23.7 MB and I am using a PC.... I at least need to get the file open so i can export the animation.

I don't personally know how to repair such a file, but I can suggest a utility that will be able to fetch an uncorrupted backup copy if it is in Window's Shadow copy.
http://shadowexplorer.com/   It's a free and easy to use utility. I personally have it.

  • Opening links to .ai files on client sites returns error "cannot open file, unknown file type" but only of illustrator isn't already open

It seem like illustrator won't allow us to link to files from a network drive without having it already open. This is a real pain for the team which is building a template library on an internal site. Any suggestions?

    Issue:
Clients logging into File Services over SMB with OS X 10.9 experience hanging connection upon login attempt.
    Root Cause:
OS X 10.9 now utilizes a new SMB2 stack written by Apple.   Apple's SMB2 implementation is not compatible with many other SMB2 NAS products on the market today while Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 works just fine.   In short, its an Apple bug.
    Workaround Option 1:
To force your connection to be SMB1, simply type cifs://servername instead of smb://servername when connecting to a Windows or NAS share.  This is by far easier and requires no real configuration changes.
    Workaround Option 2:
To force all connections to be SMB1:
    Open A terminal window
paste in the following line followed by the return key(should be all on one line):
    echo "[default]" >> ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf; echo "smb_neg=smb1_only" >> ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf
    What the command does:
Creates a file called nsmb.conf  in your  home directory at the path ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf.
Adds directives to force SMB connections to use the SMB1 protocol.  This is slower but stable.
    How to remove the workaround:
    Open a terminal window
paste in the following at the prompt and then hit the return button:
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/nsmb.conf
    Notes:
Its a good idea to restart your mac before trying to connect to your storage again. This will clear any hung SMB processes from previous attempts to connect to your storage before implementing this workaround.

  • Why do I get Error FIL-080101: Cannot open file

    Hi,
Most likely a user error, once again :(. I am using DS 12.2.0.0.
This question is also posted in BoB [http://www.forumtopics.com/busobj/viewtopic.php?p=767673#767673].
I have created a ERP SAP datastore and imported one function, which is a simple BAPI. It takes 3 simple char parameters and returns a BAPIRET2 table.
I have a dataflow which contains:
    - An Excel source file with the input parameters
    - A query using the BAPI
    - A flat target file to contain the result
    I have checked the following:
    - wiki [https://wiki.sdn.sap.com:443/wiki/display/BOBJ/SharedDirectoryaccess]
--> I checked my Services logon properties for Data Services. The logon is set to the Administrator and not to local
    - SAP Note 1388857 (Error: "Cannot open file <<path to pcache area and file name>>. Please check its path and permissions." - Data Services XI 3.2 (12.2))
--> I have no problem executing other jobs and reading the files. I only have the issue that when using the ABAP data flow
It is not clear to me which users is trying to access the files. The SAP user? The Job Server? If the job server, I don't understand why it has issues in this particular job when all others are fine.
    Help appreciated.
    Best Regards

  • Error Message #100 Cannot open file

When double-clicking on an MDF file, I'm getting the following error:
    Cannot open file 'Y:\shared\Lending\CFP.ifd'
Any idea what is causing this? This CFP.ifd file isn't even the file I'm trying to open, and as far as I know it doesn't exist. I'm able to open the MDF file with FILE>OPEN with no errors.

  • Cannot open file E:/DataLoader/ecdcs01.cprod.corp.ntgov/migration/BOXI_DS/

    Hi All,
I am attempting to read data from SAP so that we can ensure duplicates are not loaded.
The data store DS_SAP is defined and I can connect to SAP.
The table is defined in the data store and I can view the data manually,
The transfer method defined in the store in for a Shared Directory.
    ecdcs01.cprod.corp.ntgov/migration/boxi_ds
ABAP Data Flow works with the file created on the SAP Application Server.
Job server has permissions set to read from the shared directory
However when I execute the job I get the following error:
    Cannot open file <E:/DataLoader/ecdcs01.cprod.corp.ntgov/migration/BOXI_DS/CharacteristicsBasicData_Existing.dat>
*Why is the job changing the UNC path to a directory path?*
I have changed the transfer method, compresed the local repository, changed it back to shared directory and re executed the job.
    Same Result
Next exported the data store as an ATL, deleted the data store in the local repository and compressed it again.  Exited the designer, openned the designer and imported the data store ATL, after checking that no string "E:/DataLoader" existed.  Re executed the job.  Same error message.

    Hi Paul,
    Thanks for the reply.
The SAP ECC6 server is running on Windows 2008, and so is the Business Objects Data Services job server.
    SAP Server ecdcs01.cprod.corp.ntgov
    SAP SID: ECD
    SAP SNO: 01
    The Working Directory:
    ecdcs01.cprod.corp.ntgov\migration\BOXI_DS
    Application Path to shared Directory:
    ecdcs01.cprod.corp.ntgov\migration\BOXI_DS
Checked the job server has access to the directory and file on the SAP server.
Created a mapped drive on the Business Objects Server to check that the ABAPFlow was creating the file.
Tried changing the Application Path to the Mapped Drive S:\
    Ended up with the message
    E:/DataLoader/s/

  • In CS4, "Cannot open file" "Please upgrade your plug-ins..."

    Greetings,
I am using InDesign CS4 on a PC. I am trying to open an .indd file created by our marketing department. I don't know what version of InDesign they use nor whether they work on Macs or PCs.
When I double-click to open the file, I get a "Cannot Open File" popup box. The box reads "Cannot open docname.indd. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign." It then lists 18 different plugins:
    ASSIGNMENTS.RPLN
    TEXT.RPLN
    SPREAD.RPLN
    MASTER PAGE.RPLN
    TEXT ATTRIBUTES.RPLN
    .... and 13 more.
When I go to Help > Configure Plug-Ins, I can see that I do have all of these plug-ins. But apparently they are not the latest versions.
Anyone know how I can update these plugins? I have searched for them on the Adobe website, but no joy.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jen

It's a safe bet that they are working in CS5. The only way to get those plugins is to install CS5 on your machine.
You could ask your marketing department to export an IDML file from CS5, which you can open up in CS4, but it might fail horribly (and it's guaranteed to lay out incorrectly if they've used any tools in CS5 that aren't in CS4). If you rely on this workflow, by regularly using a document going back and forth between CS5 and CS4, chances are very, very good that it will fail at a critical moment. The only really safe thing to do here is to get everyone using the same version of InDesign.

  • Can't open file, upgrade plug-ins? Help.

First, I have InDesign CC and am using InDesign CC files. Every time I open a file which is an InDesignCC template file, the warning window opens and says,
"Cannot Open File. Cannot open file. Please upgrade your plug-ins to their latest versions, or upgrade to the latest version of Adobe InDesign."
Well I've already updated InDesign so I assume it's the plug-ins. Can someone direct me on how to update them or how to fix this problem? I'm on a Mac.
    Thanks

That error message has to be coming from CS6 (not yet patched to 8.0.2) or earlier. All current versions of ID would tell you which version was used to save the file.
You might have a Creative Cloud subscription, but never downloaded the CC or CC 2014 versions of ID (versions 9 & 10, respectively).
