Upgrade possible?

Hi,
Im quite new in the Mac world, so i appologies already now for any "stupid" questions.
i have a MacBook with OS 10.6.8 - 1.83Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and 1 GB 667 MHz RAM, -
am i able to upgrade to Mountain Lion without any performance issues?
As it is never ever sure on the Windows World that an upgrade is always better, i thougt before trying it with my Mac, just ask before.
i know that the requirements for Mountain Lion is just to have 10.6.8 or higher, well i have it, but is then the hardware still enough to runn smoothly the MAC (just for Internet, Email, FaceTime, Photo Viewer) nothing to heavy.
thx a lot guys

thx to all of you
im happy that i posted the question regarding the upgrade.
And thanks as well for the many usfull hints, where to find what kind of info for the future.
cheers to all and thx again from Switzerland.
cheers

  • What is the maximum ram upgrade possible on a Mid 2011 iMac 21.5-inch

I have an iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 running OS X 10.9.5 which currently has 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram. The Hard Drive has 149.87 GB free out of 499.25 GB. It has been running slow for a while now. I would like to know what is the "TRUE" maximum Ram Upgrade possible. The reason I say "TRUE" is because the specs say one things when I find others saying another. I would like to install the maximum Ram that will increase the speed to its optimum. I have read some information that this particular computer will not take advantage of anything past a certain amount of ram.
So with all that said, I am asking for specific numbers, types of ram, suggestions etc etc...
    Thanks

Here's what you can do and need:
    Maximum Memory
32 GB (Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Sources for memory I recommend are:
    OWC
    DataMem

  • Any Upgrades Possible for Mid-2007 MBP?

I was wondering if anybody knew the answer to this question.
Before I start, there are a couple of issues I'd like to address.
First, my Macbook Pro's optical drive has become unreliable just like most other users have experienced over the years. To remedy this, I just purchased an external DVD writer. This leaves me with the thought to remove the superdrive and install a second HDD in it's place (See: Data Doubler). Also, the original HDD had failed during my Applecare warranty, and Apple had replaced it with a larger capacity one.
Second, my Time Machine backup external HDD began to make unusual and loud noises today. To me It sounds like it's approaching failure (I certainly hope not), which has really made me think about stepping up to a RAID config.
Finally, I've read in some articles about upgrading 4GB MBP's to 6GB. I was hoping if I could do the same with mine.
So my question invovles the following: Can I upgrade my MBP to have two HDDs in a RAID1 configuration, and add more memory? Can I also set up an External RAID1 or RAID5 configuation? ? If none of these apply, what are my other possible options?
I'm running Lion if that helps.
    Thank you.

Just to be sure - is it a MacBookPro3,1? Need to know that first. But of course you can use the Data Doubler in your machine but to set up RAID, I think that you'd have to have two identical HD's in the bay. I've never used RAID on Mac' so I'll let someone else answer that.
As to RAM, MacTracker reports that you can use up to 6GB of RAM (1 stick of 2 GB, 1 stick of 4 GB). You can't go wrong with calling the good folks at OWC to ask about a RAID config using their Data Doubler, though.
And, as to your external 'dying,' I think that my first priority would be replacing it so that you can keep your back-ups up-to-date. You don't say, but since you can run Lion, I'm assuming you are? If so, then you could use Time Machine, which I swear by - I've been using it since my Snow Leopard days on a 2006 1,1.
Again, I'd call OWC and ask for their recommendations. Sure, they're going to want to sell you something but they are always good for advice, too.

I don't want to spend 500 for the phone. Phone B contract and be upped another 2 years, but I want the phone for Phone A @ $300.

  • Any upgrades possible? CPU/GPU/Processor Satellite L745-s4310

Ive already upgraded the RAM to 8GB. I know how laptops are supposed to be difficult to upgrade and such, but i can manage if something compatible is possible. Anything to increase my power would be much appreciated!

Do you really think that a CPU upgrade will bring a strong performance boost? I doubt this
Therefore you have to exchange the complete notebook architecture. That means a new mainboard with faster chipset, support for more and faster RAM, etc.
Furthermore you will loose the warranty if you exchange the CPU and its own your own risk!!!

  • Confirmation: BW 7.3 upgrade possible if SEM is installed

I realize that SAP BW 7.2 has been cancelled and that it will be consolidated with 7.3, however, I would assume that the following would remain true.
    1. If SEM BPS is installed with SAP BW 7.01, then an upgrade is not possible at this stage?
    2. What are the options (work arounds) to upgrade?
    3. When is a supporting SEM BPS version planned to allow for an upgrade?
    Cheers.

I don't have the answer, but would certainly like to see it answered.   We had the same problem going to enhp 1, and were told we had to wait and do ERP Enhancement Pack 4 (which included Netweaver enhp 1) because we have SEM.
We were able to do that upgrade this year.  But we are trying to use Business Objects Webi, and seeing lots of performance improvements still being released.   Support pack 5 or above looks like its our immediate path, but we will want these 7.3 features too.

  • Is a 16gig/RAM upgrade possible 13" MACBOOK PRO 2.9ghz if so is it worth it or am I better off with a 15" MBP?

Forgive me for trolling on this topic but I wanted to be a bit more specific and get properly eductated before I make a final decision.  I had a 17" and I f@cking hate it because of it's size.
I have been a mac guy for a few years but up until now I relyed on my tech/junior assistant to deal with all the tech stuff.  He has now gone and on his own leaving me to get all techy again.
A little about me and what I will use the laptop for.
I am a photographer/film maker. I run CS6 very often sometimes daily.  I usually have multiple picuture files open with multiple layers.  Some images can range to a size of 600mb+.  I shoot with cameras with no less than 18 megapxls.  On top of that I may also have FINAL CUT PRO and working on short films.  I generally have the habit of jumping back and forth between the two, plus get distracted with the web and stream videos. and the od video game (but not so much).
I keep reading that 16 gigs of ram is a possible upgrade on a 13" macbook.  Is it possible?  And if so, what sort of performance boost can I expect (in comparison to the 15" MBP?  Also, if so are there any glitches that may damage the computer?
    1.  I travel quite a bit I really prefer the portability of the 13" MBP and want to avoid having to buy te 15" MBP
    2.  I am attempting to be cost effective (which may be a futile attempt)
    All answers are welcome.
Thanks for your time and have a fine day Ladies and Gents.
    Cheers

Thanks mate but it doesnt, answer the question about performance.
In terms of screen real estate, I don't care much for it as I usually work relatively close to the pixel sizes and I generally work in very dum conditions so the antiglare is something I also dont care for.  If mac offered a Matt finish screen again it would be a dream lol.
Retina though sweet is really just a gimmick, stare at one screen, starred at them all, so I'm fine with the regular MBP.
    And size does matter.

  • Mac os X Server Universal Binary install upgrade possible ?

Has anyone attempted the following upgrade pattern with the new mac pros with mac os X Universal Binary build ?
Take your PowerPC mac os X server build to an external hard drive (Carbon Copy clonning or via SuperDuper). Tie in the external hard drive to the Mac Pro . Upgrade the Mac os X server install via the DVD install for mac os X server coming with the mac pro . CCC it back to the mac pro ... watch the fireworks ?
I am still in waiting the machine but there are loads of data i would like to transfer from our my present mac os X server quad setup to the upcoming MacPro and doing this manipulation might make the transition soooo much easier than having to transport everything ...
I hope there are no other already started threads concerning this procedure but if such would be the case i apologize for the inconvinience caused and would be glad if reffering threads would be posted here ...
    G5 Quad 2.5 7TB xraid 16GB of ram.   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mac os X server 10.4.7

From the looks of it the upgrade from Mac os X server PPC to Mac os X server Universal Binary is not possible from install disk .... i backed up a whole PPC drive loaded my Mac os X Server UB in the machine and booted off the CD on a MBP ... and the installer just wont take the PPC build as upgradable .. once again apple leaves us in the middle of the transition ... WHY ???? For those of us getting mac pros to run mac os x server applications this would be a great benefit to all parties involved and help solve the many dog heared problems we have faced all along in 10.4.
Edit: Same thing from a PPC standpoint a PPC build wont upgade to a Universal Binary build at all as it seems ... i am calling Apple support and hope to get further information to share ... wish me luck
I dare hope leopard behaves better than 10.4 has been especially on the server side which broke many functions that 10.3 got right pretty quickly and neatly .

A few questions I think the technical team can confirm and answer for me:
    1.   CPU soldered in or upradeable with aftermarket CPU purchase? This is Intel i7 4700
    2.  Is GPU upgradeable with aftermarket GPU?  This one is 470M
    3.  Possibility of installing an additional SSD (one to boot), and HDD for a performance/storage configuration (not mSSD).
-Use of drive caddy or something a long these lines e.g. where mSata, or DVD drives can both be swapped for a drive caddy.
    Thanks.
    This question was solved.

The CPU is not soldered in place but you are going to find that there is not a lot of improvement possible. That is a 4th gen i7 processor and even if you could get one a tick or 2 faster the price would be astronomical not to mention you would void the warranty. Not worth it.
No GPU upgrade is possible. The video is on a chip soldered to the board.
Yes, the laptop has a second hard drive bay and you can get an SSD (regular full sized) to put in the first bay to use as a boot drive. This will speed it up tremendously such that you will not want to upgrade the CPU any more.
Here is the caddy you need:

  • Is A NonDisruptive System/Signature Upgrade Possible?

Reading the config guides I can't seem to accept that my colleague is correct in saying its possible to do a non disruptive system/signature upgrade on an ASA 5520 with an AIP-SSM-10 module.
Can you do a nondisruptive system/signature upgrade?

Short answer...depends on your definitions of non-disruptive and system.
A more useful answer is that a signature update is designed to be as non-disruptive as possible to sensing. That is, traffic will continue to flow and sensing will continue to happen to as much extent as possible. It is possible that the signature update could siphon off enough processing power to start affecting sensing. If this happens, the sensor can cut in an auto bypass feature (configurable) to unload the CPU enough to get the update finished. Traffic will continue to flow, but sensing would be disrupted momentarily. When the update finishes the bypass is removed and sensing will recover.
A system update (defined as an Engine Update, Service Pack, Minor, or Major release) will have a greater level of disruptive impact. An Engine Update will invoke bypass and stop sensing activity while the sensing binary (sensorApp) is replaced and restarted. Traffic will flow via the bypass until sensorApp is restarted and then sensing will continue. Service Packs and higher typically have to invoke a system reboot, which will disrupt traffic in the lower performance sensors. The two newest sensors (4260 and 4270) have hardware bypass on the Cu NICs and can invoke that bypass to keep traffic flowing if the network design is correct (inline interface pairs on the same interface card).

  • Is a hard drive upgrade possible for an old Powerbook G4?

I just recently got a Powerbook G4 400 (the first version, I think). It only has a 10 GB hard drive and 256K memory. I would like to know if it is possible, or worthwile to buy a newer, bigger hard drive, memory and a new OS. If so, can anyone give me ideas about what to look for, models, etc...???
I am completely lost so thanks for any help!

It is possible to upgrade your RAM and hard drive and install a fairly recent version of OS X on your Powerbook, but I wouldn't call it worthwhile. You'll spend as much or more doing so as the machine is worth afterward.
Your machine is now over nine and a half years old (it was released in January 2001). It has a DVD-ROM drive, so it can't burn CDs or DVDs unless you replace that drive, and its non-upgradeable graphics processor is completely obsolete for any sort of multimedia or streaming video on today's websites, or for gaming. Its CPU, blazing fast for a notebook of its time, is ten to forty times slower than the ones in today's Macs.
The most recent OS X version you should consider is Tiger (10.4.x). To install it, you would have to replace your hard drive and you'd want to add RAM. A new 80GB or 120GB hard drive (you can't use one larger than 120GB in that machine without third-party commercial software and a lot of caveats) will cost $60-$75. 512MB of RAM would cost $35-50 and 1GB would cost $55-80. The kicker is that even a decent used copy of the retail Tiger installer DVD is likely to cost over $100. So at a minimum, you'd be putting $200 into a machine that right now isn't worth that much, and wouldn't be worth any more than that afterward. If you're OK with that, go ahead, but don't expect that the result is going to resemble the experience of getting a new Mac in 2010.
