UPGRADE PROBOOK 6470b HDD - SSD

Hello All,
Unfortunately I am getting persistent HDD problems/errors on my ProBook 6470b (warranty has expired).
I would like to replace the HDD with a SSD for better performance.
Now, although I have the experience and skills to carry out this procedure I would like some recommendations on a new SSD.
Basically, which SSDs will be compatible with the ProBook 6470b?
I have read that some are not recognised in the BIOS and some couldn't install an O/S.
Thank you in advance.

Samsung 840 Evo will work fine, as will the newer 850. Stay clear of the Crucial MX100 series. Other than that you can use just about any SSD on the market in the 2.5 inch SATA form factor.

  • I want to upgrade the 500gb HDD to an SSD on an S230u with windows 8 but want clone the drive

I want to upgrade the 500gb HDD to an SSD on an Thinkpad Twist S230u with windows 8 but don't want to lose the data and programs installed on the drive and have to start over. I tried to clone it but no software could do it. I tried acronis and EasyToDo. I was able to clone it with a duplicator but it wasn't bootable. Am I to assume that what I need to do is the following - 1- Create the recovery media on a 32gb usb stick. 2- back up the drive using Acronis (or other) 3- Physically replace the drive 4- boot to the USB Recovery Media and bring the system back to it's original state out of the box but with the SSD Drive. 5- Use Acronis (or other) to restore back up made of the 500gb prior to removal. Thanks in advance! Scott Fischer

Before you start cloning your HDD with acronis, you have to prepare the SSD:
at first: connect your SSD with USB to your notebook and
     1. Start CMD.EXE as Admin
     2. type: "diskpart"
     3. type: "select disk x " x = Letter of your SSD
     4.  type: "list partition" the drive should be unformatted
     5.  type: "create partition primary align=1024"
     6. type: "active"
     7. type: "format fs=ntfs" --> wait some minutes
     8. type: "assign letter=x" --> For example "x"
     9. type: "exit"
Start acronis true image 2013 (trial version)
    select "Backup" without empty sectors
you can select any partitions, so also the the invisible lenovo backup paritions
The Backup can be "Restore"-d to the SSD, incl.  GPT (MBR like in UEFI Systems)
After all, the SSD is ready to use. Booting on USB gives here a blue screen. I tought it was my fault. It isnt. You can build in the SSD into your SATA Port and Windows 8 will boot very well.
    Sorry for my bad english

    Hi ghattiya,
Removing and replacing the HDD, assuming the same form factor, is shown in the Lenovo Training Videos.
For tips on how to clone the drive or do a clean install, I suggest starting by searching the forum.

  • Upgrading RAM and maybe SSD

Alright, so I have a HP Pavilion Touchsmart 14 Sleekbook. I want to have a little more speed and capacity. I would like to upgrade my RAM and SSD, but I have no clue on the maximum capacity on this computer. If you all could help me out, I would greatly appreciate that. Also, any recommendations for the brand or sub categories would also be appreciated.Thank you all!!

    Hi again,
    Manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03721290
    Specs: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-14-Sleekbook/5355021/model/5438123/document/c0389800...
You can upgrade upto 8GB maximum according to the Specs page and Manual. And your laptop already had 4gigs in one slot.
There are 2 customer-accessible slots available & you can buy one more exactly identical 4GB RAM preferably same brand for the upgrade & both can act in Dual-channel configuration for better performance.
About the RAM frequency, the user guide does not give reliable information for Celeron processors. So better you find that from BIOS setup f10, soon after powering on the laptop or running CPUZ program tool.
    http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
Crucial has an online scanner which detects and lists compatible upgrades guaranteed in your system, you can run that and probably purchase one from them.
    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/systemscanner
You can replace HDD with SSD of similar form factor - 2.5 inch SATA 7mm thick. A 250gb or above Samsung Evo SSD would be good in my opinion. Cloning the HDD to SSD would be preferable if you don't want to do a clean install. You could also use Recovery USB you must have created initially to factory reset laptop after SSD upgrade.
If you don't have recovery media, you could create one now preferably in a 32gb good branded USB (avoid Sandisk):
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03481733
If you've upgraded Windows 8 to 8.1 , recovery partition might have become corrupted , this ordering Recovery USB is the option left.
See Page 54-56, 66, 67 Chapter 5 in the Manual & you can see that, for installing SSD, memory module you have to take the System motherboard out. Its better you give it to nearest HP service center for the upgrade since they'll be having all the tools required.
It'll void warranty if you do it yourself & in the process break something.

  • Attempting to upgrade Yogo Pro 2 SSD to larger one by cloning (and obviously failing)

    The laptop: Yoga Pro 2
    OS: Windows 8.1
Situation: The laptop comes with a Samsung 128gb ssd (mSATA).  I used this space up, and need to upgrade to a larger SSD.
Solution: I bought a Crucial M550 256gb ssd from MicroCenter for $159, and a Kingwin KM-U3MSATA USB 3.0 Mini SATA SSD Enclosure Adapter.  I downloaded a few free cloning programs, EaseUS, Acronis and Macrium Reflect.
Problem:  OK, so i have cloned a few HDD's in my day.  Never once had a problem transferring full cloning to a new larger drive.  But this time I am having all kinds of problems.
    Process-
    1) I stick 256GB card in Kingwin Enclosure.
    2) I plug enclosure into USB 3.0 slot on Yoga.
    3) I select Disk Management
    4) Disk management says it needs to initialize disk before using.  Asks me to choose either MBR or GBT.  I choose what is preslected- GBT.
    5) Disk appears now in Disk Management as Unallocated.
    6) Open up EaseUS, and select the cloning option.
    7) Choose all the partitions in the first section, and my new 256gb drive as the option to clone them too.  I leave uncheced "optimize for ssd" and something else about sector stuff.
    8) All seems to be going well.  Sectors start writing.
    9) Then for some flipping reason it stops writing, maybe halfway through.  I get an error code.
    10) I send the error code back to EaseUS.  Its rejected as undeliverable.
    11) I delete the partition, which now is coming up as a RAW format.
    12) I try to repeat the process, sometimes with little to no success.
I did return the SSD back to microcenter to swap for a new one.  That didn't seem to help matters.
So can anyone offer any help for a desperate Yoga fan?  It's not supposed to be this hard, is it?  What am I missing?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK so if anyone wants to know, maybe you are experiencing the same problem, I have found a soltion for this, that worked for me anyways.
I was attempting to do a full disc clone, outlined the the procedures above.
I tried SEVERAL different cloning programs, and all came up with the same problem- It would stop working midway through a clone.
I thought it was maybe a setting on my laptop- Maybe the USB port, SSD etc is set to turn off at a certain time.
Nope.  I changed all these settings, and it was for nothing.
So as a last resort I chose to image my SDD instead of cloning it.
It required I send the file to my Desktop computer (it had enough memory available, so I found my Desktop on the Network and sent the image to a public folder.
Then I used my Kingwin USB SSD adapter, plugged it into Desktop, and wrote the Image file to it using EaseUS software.
Plugged the larger SSD into my Yoga, and it went through all four original bottable media options in DOS, denying me every time, but after proceding it allowed me to choose the Crucial 256GB SSD afterwards.  Booted right up.
I did have to use AOMEI Partition to merge the unallocated space with the imaged Partitions, but afterwards I am all set.
Still no idea why I couldn't just do a simple system clone.

  • Does Satellite P70-A-129 support the second HDD/SSD

I recently bought this model P70-A-129 from Greece, and i am wondering if it accepts a second HDD / SSD drive.
I opened the underneath cover and there is a second connector but i don't know if it is connected to the Main-board.
Can you assist me by telling me if this model can manage a second drive?
    Thanks

    Hi
    Its easy to test this
You can try to connect the HDD placed in the first HDD bay to the 2nd HDD controller in the 2nd HDD bay. In case the BIOS would recognize the HDD properly, the upgrade should be possible.
Please check also this Toshiba Satellite P70 / Qosmio X70 HDD replacement procedure.

  • Cant access to BIOS aftre HDD/SSD password!

    Hello,
Today I set a HDD/SSD password to my Tecra A-11 (updated BIOS) and I am verry happy with that pas,but I cant enter to the BIOS after I enter my HDD/SSD passwor - I press F2,but the screen just go dark for a second or two and the system acts like just being restarted - starting Windows 7 Ultimate.
Please advice what have to be done so I can enter my BIOS again.
    Thanks in advance

If it thinks it has a BIOS or HDD password, there's no way to remove that without servicing. It sounds like it likely got damaged in the drop.

  • Is there a way to upgrade the 512GB hdd to 1TB on a 2011 mbp under applecare so that the applecare is not voided?

Is there a way to upgrade the 512GB hdd to 1TB on a 2011 mbp under applecare so that the applecare is not voided?
    I am currently using Mavericks.

A hard drive replacement doesn't void warranty on a MacBook Pro, so you can replace the hard drive without worrying about its warranty. However, you have to be sure of what you are doing, because if you damage any part, you will void warranty.
First look for a hard drive. I recommend you to visit OWC for hard drives > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ 7200 rpm hard drives will give you extra performance.
Then, just reinstall OS X through OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718 Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting, format the hard drive with Disk Utility and reinstall OS X or restore a Time Machine backup

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of the computer, inside the battery compartment, or on the BIOS startup/setup screen. Please do not include the serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
If your computer came with Windows 8, it may be possible to install the SSD and run your HP Recovery Discs successfully. If successful, your SSD will be partitoned with an OS partition and other partition. If this doesn't work you may be able to download Windows 8 OEM and install that, however your computer will have no HP customization and you won't be able to install any HP value-added software.
If your computer came with Windows 7, it is unlikely that your will be able to run your HP Recovery Discs successfully on the SSD. You may be able to download and install Windows 7, however your computer will have no HP customization and you won't be able to install any HP value-added software.
In both cases you may be able to "clone" the factory hard drive to the SSD.
