Upgrade question - Should I upgrade from 10.3.7 to 10.3.9 or jump to Tiger?

Hi. Thanks in advance for reading my thread.
Here's my dilemma.
Lately I've been unable to use certain programs and view some web pages which I believe is due to my OS being 10.3.7. For example, I can't upgrade to Quicktime 7 (which I need to perform some tasks - including fully use my video Ipod I think) and I've been having programs "Unexpectedly Quit" quite often. (I do repair permissions consistently and I use Mac Janitor weekly).
However, the main programs I run, Avid Xpress Pro 4.6, Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD, Adobe Photoshop CS 8, Microsoft Office 2004 all are running pretty well.
It appears that if I upgrade to 10.3.9 I will be able to upgrade to Quicktime 7.0 which would be helpful. But, upgrading scares me because I have 3 random firewire drives and I've read about problems with certain chip sets etc. In fact, in the recent past I lost a couple drives due (I think) to a chip set issue with a particular enclosure.
If I upgrade to Tiger I'm afraid of having issues with the programs I am currently using (like Adobe, FCP, and Avid).
I'm looking for any recommendations and opinions on what I should upgrade to. Keep in mind I'm a definitely not a Mac Genius.
Thanks for your help.

Upgrading would be a good idea. You can download the 10.3.9 Combo Upgrader directly from Apple's website (www.apple.com/support/downloads/.)
Photoshop and Office will work OK. I believe so should FCP. As for Avid you should check with their website to determine if the version you are using is compatible. If not you should be able to upgrade.
Upgrading to Tiger may be another matter. Although Adobe apps and Office will work OK, I'm not sure about FCP or Avid. Upgrades may be necessary for compatibility. Upgrading to Tiger will require purchasing the Tiger retail installer package.
To avoid any Firewire problems disconnect all FW drives before updating. Also be sure to do the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Upgrade question....from 1 to 3 same price as from 2 to 3?

I have Lightroom 1....still (hey, I've been a student the last two years!)  I was looking into upgrading to 2 and discovered the 3 beta is out already.  Generally with Adobe products can you upgrade from a version two previous....say from LR 1 to 3...or Photoshop CS2 to CS4 for the same price as going from LR2 to 3 over CS3 to 4?  Would like to move my software forwards, but wondering if I should wait a few months....I appreciate any words of advice.

    Tom,
Nobody knows. At least, nobody who does know is allowed to say.
I seem to recall that PS upgrades were the same price even when you skip a version, and it wouldn't surprise me if LR worked the same way. We'll probably know within a couple of months, but my personal guess is that you won't lose any money by waiting for Version 3 to be released.

  • Should i upgrade my iphone 3g from ios 3.1.2  to 4.2?

should i upgrade my iphone 3g from ios 3.1.2  to 4.2? i cant use all the latest apps !

SSince Apple does not support downgrading the iOS I suggest you start a new question that gives a good title to a specific problem. Then in the body of the thread describe the problem in detail, tell us what steps you have tried so far to correct the problem, what happened, and what error messages you received.

  • Should I upgrade to Macericks now from 10.6.8 on my i-Mac(mid 2007, core 2 duo?). Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ? 10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about future supportibility?

Should I upgrade to Mavericks now from 10.6.8 (i-Mac, mid 2007, core 2 duo)? Will Mavericks be more secure than 10.6.8 ?  I have the latest version of 10.6.8 and have upgraded my memory to 4GB. This could be one reason for me to make the move now.
10.6.8 has been great, it runs great with all my apps but am concerned about lack of support now. I know my PC apps will not work but maybe some apps that work now will "walk away" from 10.6.8 and then there's the security question of above.
I am also concerned about iPhoto 9 transition to i-Photo 11 and compatibility of my Time Machine WD Passport HD (format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled) based on several questions in applicable forums.
Thanks for your help in this important decision!

If I were you I would stick with Snow Leopard. It's much better suited to your old hardware. That said:
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Should I upgrade from Lion (OS 10.7.5)?

My Macbook Pro is 4+  years-old. I have no complaints (except for MS Office for Mac - another topic). My question is whether I should upgrade (to Mountain Lion?)   Am I missing much? Do I risk anything by upgrading?  Can I go from Lion to Mavericks without first upgrading to Mtn Lion?  Many thanks to you all for your attention and interest.

Easy question first - Yes, you can go directly from Lion to Mavericks. Open the Mac app store and start the download and install. It's free.
Warning though - check with the makers of your other software to see if it is compatible with Mavericks. Some older packages are no longer supported. Some lose functionality. Some just don't work. Check first.
Also, make a complete backup of your system before upgrading. In fact you should have back ups of all your important data at all times, but doing so before upgrading is especially important. The risk is that something goes wrong and you lose it all. Does not happen all that often but do you want to be the person who thought it would not happen to them?
What is it that you are expecting from Mavericks (or Mountain Lion) that you do not have now? Have you looked at a Mac running it and seen the differences? Be sure you know why you are upgrading before you do so. Not to discourage you, I like Mavericks aside from some minor issues, but the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy of IT management has a purpose.
    Best of luck.

  • Upgrade from Panther - pre-upgrade questions

Hello all! I want to upgrade my iBook OS 10.3.9 to either Tiger or Leopard (I have install disks for both) and have a few questions.
1-I have read of many install problems with Leopard, should I upgrade to Tiger instead for ease?
2-besides backing up my files like photos and music, etc, what else do I back up? I have a 500GB external hard drive so I have plenty of space. Do I make a new image of my disc? I read somewhere about making a "bootable" backup - and that would be what exactly?
3-I also read something about running Disk Utility before the upgrade - why and what am I running in Disk Utility?
Thank you all for any questions you can answer!

But you have not read many of the successful installs with zero problems, have you? They are not here for obvious reasons.
I recommend Leopard. I have never had any problems on any of my three machines.
What you read here is like reading the casebook at the local hospital emergency room - but we don't think from that that everyone there is typical, do we?

The best backup is the bootable clone. Both CCC and SuperDuper! provide this. Check to see if they support Panther.

I am no longer very familiar with Panther, but in diskutility there are two functions - repair permissions and repair hard drive. They are more important in Leopard than previous OSs. If there are there, run them before upgrading.
    After upgrading, run them again.

  • Should I upgrade from version 6?

I just bought a Nikon D5000 and I would like to start using the RAW support features in photoshop elements and I currently have Photoshop Elements 6.  Is there a significant different in the RAW support between 6 and 8?  Is the raw support in PE decent, or is CS recommended?
    Thanks in advance,  Craig

As I understand it The D5000 requires Nikon "AF-S" lenses for autofocus operation. (I'm not quite certain). The operation of the D-40, D-40x, and D-60 is thus.
The D-50, D-70, D-80, and D-90 all have provisions for using the "screw drive" mechanical drive "AF-D" lens in full auto focus operation.
I'm not fully literate in all the D-5000's specs, but if AF-D lens operation is not an issue to you, then go for it. As I understand it, one of the D-X000 series cameras carries the same CMOS sensor as the D-90. The D-90's CMOS sensor is a dramatic improvement over the CCD in the D-80, which is a great camera in it's own right.
As to your original question about the upgrade from PSE-6 to 8, unfortunately I went from PSE-5 to 7, and it might be prudent for me not to put my foot too far in my mouth by presuming an opinion. I do know the general chatter has been that the organizer in PSE-8 "sucks", but here again, that's hearsay. Some "amateur"product reviews reflect the intellect of the reviewer, rather than the utility of the product.
In PSE-8, the organizer is supposed to be compatible with 16 bit files, Windows 7, and a 64 bit OS. If any of these things is in your future, then mabye you should download the trial version and give it a shot. With PSE-8, Elements now requires activation, and doesn't rely on a person's moral compass to limit the installation options

Hello to all. I'm not an expert in operating systems, and I pose this question: Can I upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion on a Mac Book Pro

That depends on the Macbook Pro.The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

It doesn't matter. The results are the same. Lightroom 3.2 is Lightroom 3.2 whether you download it or buy the box.

I agree ... skip 2.0, although this seems irrelevant to your title and first paragraph.

  • No service on IPad 2 after upgrade to IOS 8. Waited a month to try it. A restart brings connectivity back for a while. If the iPad 2 was too old to receive this upgrade it should have been excluded from it.

Upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8. Waited a month as I saw all the problems other users were having. Now I am with them. No service. Connectivity restored only after a restart . These are necessary frequently. Last week I had a fully functioning iPad now I do not.
If the IPad 2 was not capable of handling the upgrade it should have been excluded. I have read the fixes, tried some, apprehensive about trying others. Why should the customers have to work to fix an upgrade meant to improve performance?
Any news on an IOS fix?
Any solutions other than wiping out  everything and starting over? Have seen that several times. Backing up, wiping clean, refreshing, restoring...why do we have to struggle?
i am spending way too much time trying to get my iPad back to what I had. I am sure the genius bar is packed with iphone 6 users and the new edition iPads. No room for folks with "old" ones. And if I try something and fail then I have nothing at all.
Hoping for a "fix" from Apple as well as any ideas.

    Hello, ik31.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an article that I would recommend going through when experiencing this issue.
If your iOS device restarts, displays the Apple logo, or powers off while you're using it

Although my machine excedes the minimum requirements for Tiger, I have held off on upgrading for a long time, because when it first came out, I heard reports that it was much slower than Panther on older macs.
I now, however, have two pieces of software that I want to run that require Tiger, so I am debating again whether to upgrade. My computer is stable and runs well, and I don't want to hurt that or slow it down significantly.
My computer is a dual 550Ghz G4 with 640 mb of Ram and about 5 Gigs of free boot drive space. I did get the DVD rom drive installed when I bought it, so that shouldn't be a problem.
    Should I upgrade?

    Hi Matthew,
since you already run 10.3.9 it does not make much sense to upgrade. Many of the new features of Tiger will not run on your computer due to limited hardware resources. If you are happy with Panther, stay with it until you buy a new computer. My G3/900 iBook runs happily with Panther as well.
BTW: 10.4. Tiger is NOT slower than Panther, in some situations it is even faster.

I had an iPhone 5s with iOS 8.1 on it and I didn't notice any more or less battery life. I don't know what "bug" you're referring to.
I recently upgraded to an iPhone 6 with iOS 8.1 and I do notice better battery life. But I think that's due to the new phone, not iOS.

Can I upgrade to OS X Lion from a Macbook OS X 10.5.8?  Based on what I read I should be able to easily do this.  I am not a computer guru, just know enought to be dangerous:)

    Upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard, then update to 10.6.8      Snow Leopard Purchase
Check that you computer is compatible with Mountain Lion

Check to make sure your applications are compatible.         Application Compatibility
If you have applications that you want to use that aren't compatible, you can retain Snow Leopard and create a new partition to install Mountain Lion on.
If your computer isn't compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.        Computer Compatibility - Lion
