Upgrade Server 2008 Enterprise Domain Controller to Server 2012 Standard?

Hey there,
We are going to be attempting to upgrade several of our Windows Server 2008 Domain Controllers in our satellite offices from Windows Server 2008 Enterprise to Server 2012 Standard.  I know the inplace upgrade will work (tried it on a member server)
but are there any caveats being that they are Domain Controllers?  Contacted Microsoft and they said we shouldn't have any issues upgrading, and there is nothing special that has to be done in preparation.  (I thought for sure we would have to DCPromo
down before and dcpromo up after the upgrade, but not so much, according to MS)  But I figured I would check and see if anyone has done this successfully.  I should mention that we already have 2, Windows Server 2012 Domain Controllers in our environment,
and one of them has the FSMO roles.  Thanks in advance!

It should work with no problems. My favorite options remains always to demote the DC, re-install it completely and then promoting it again: This is just my own way to work as it makes me sure that I start with a clean base with the fresh install.

    Hi Lawrence,
After configuring the GPO, did we run command gpupdate/force to update the policy immediately on domain controller? Besides, please run command gpresult/h c:\gpreport.html to check if the audit policy
    setting was applied successfully.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller NOT logging EventID 4740

EventID 4740 (account lockout) is not being logged to the event viewer. When searching through the security log there are none to be found. Having accounts locked out and no logging is driving me nuts. Hope someone has run into this before. This is what
    i have checked thus far.
    >Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controller
    >Verified the following GPO settings are set and correct:
    >Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy\ all are set for Success & Failure
    >Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Advanced Audit Configuration\Logon/Logoff) is set for Success and Failure
    >Powershell command Get-Eventlog -log Security -InstanceId 4740 returns no results which makes sense since there are no entries in the security log file.
    >No 4740 entries in the netlogon.log debug file
AD and the LockoutStatus tool show the account is locked out but i still have nothing in the logs.
Anyone have any ideas? From everything i can find online , it appears i have everything set properly.
    Thanks, Chico

    Hi Chico,
I suggest you try to enable this group policy below:

I suspected some issue with AV so uninstalled.
To resolve the Access Denied I followed these steps:
    stop w32time
    w32tm /unregister
    reboot
    regsvr32 /u w32time.dll
    w32tm /register
sc query w32time -- you should see that the service is set to
shared mode -- this is presumably how it should be -- if you try to start right now, you'll get the expected 1290 SID-related error
    reboot
w32time should now automatically start at boot up and be running -- that was my result -- it's running as shared, started on its own, and I can do the w32tm /query commands successfully
After rebooting the time service started.
    I then repeated the steps:
    net stop w32time
    w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manual /manualpeerlist:"0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org, 2.pool.ntp.org"
    w32tm /config /reliable:yes
    net start w32time
    w32tm /query /configuration
And all worked. I'll wait a short while to see if this fixes the issue. I also have am SA case with MS so will confirm fix when resolved.

  • Windows Server 2012 Standard - HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus printer not working after promoting to Domain Controller / AD Services

An associate and myself installed the built-in drivers for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus multi-function (network) printer on a Windows Server 2012 Standard server installation and everything worked fine whenever I want to print anything directly from the
Windows Server machine (there's a reason for this, so please understand that ;)  ).
We were able to print without any problems from the Windows Server 2012 machine, using the drivers from Microsoft.  Mainly, because HP has not listed any specific support for Windows Server 2012, only Windows Server 2008 R2, however, the drivers that
came with Windows 2012 seem to work very well.
PROBLEM: I later had to promote the Windows Server 2012 to a Domain Controller, and created the Active Directory configurations, even enabled the Print Services.  After doing all of that, the HP printer will not print anything.  It's like all print
requests directly from the Windows Server go to Nil.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this before? The only thing I can think of is that after perhaps something affected printing directly once we promoted the server to being a DC, and added other features / roles.  I even tried installing the
HP drivers for Windows Server 2008 R2, and the results are still the same...nothing prints.  Trust me, the printer is set as the Default Printer and even when choosing to print, we make sure the HP OfficeJet Pro is selected, and is on, as other Windows
Client PC's can print to it directly.
Does anyone have any suggestions we could try?  Thanks in advance.

While it is quite a while since this was posted - I can concur a similar issue exists.
We have spent the better part of a day trying to work out why other HP printers work fine but our 8620 prints are not printing and going to Nil.  The print server is hosted on a shared DC.  Comparing to the initial posters details, for some reason
it seems to be most commonly related to the OfficeJet Pro 8600/8610/8620/8630 series printers.
I ended up doing a print server migration from the domain controller to stand alone host and all printers now work from a single server rather than a mix.  Domain controller OSes varied from 2008, 2012, 2012 R2 (tested with multiple) and only after
all of those failed then tried a stand alone server os machine as a last resort which worked fine.  Printing directly from Win 7 / 8 /8.1 clients to the IP always worked.

  • How to reset Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controller "Administrator" password?

    Hello Everyone,
I have lost Administrator password for the following system:
    Windows 2008 R2
Domain Controller setup on same machine
Stand alone server - no workstations or other servers invovled
I still have the "Directory Service Restore Password" but I don't think that helps me for lost Administrator password. I beleive I need to boot from an .iso file to gain access. I already tried "Offline NT Password & Registery Editor" and it has set
Administrator password to (blank) but that is not allowing me access as it seems that I have to login to domain controller Administrator. So, how can I reset that password?
    Thanks

It wasn't difficult to reset the domain password and I think Microsoft's policy of not providing an easy forward way is to create an
illusion of security which is not there. Linux systems that are much more secure that MSFT software allow easy password reset when physical access is there so why not include the same tools in System Repair tools or using F8?
Anyhow, this guide helped me reset the password in 5 minutes. Read the bottom of it to find the scripted / automatic version of the process:

  • SharePoint 2013 OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 vs Windows Server 2012 Standard

    Hi Team,
We are thinking on upgrading from SharePoint 2010 to SP 2013 soon. I have been researching about the server OS I should install as host, and it seems that SharePoint 2013 is fully compatible by now with both Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard + SP1 and
Windows Server 2012 Standard. In my opinion we should go with server 2012, but Windows server 2008 is the norm here at our organization and our Infrastructure team seems reluctant to upgrade servers to 2012 yet.
My question is, what SharePoint or Windows 2012 features will we miss if we decide to stay on Windows 2008?  What are the perks (selling points) of going with 2012 over 2008? (besides the obvious Microsoft support range extension).
    Thanks!
    -Rob.

If you stay on Windows Server 2008 R2 you will enter the extended/out of support phase sooner, of course. You will miss out on IIS improvements, although in practical terms it may not mean much.
There are extra patches required for a 2008 R2 deployment that are not needed on 2012 for SharePoint 2013. But other than that, I think the other big issue is that mostly in the community, you'll find people running Server 2012 which means issues are better
'known' by the community, versus 2008 R2 in combination with SharePoint 2013.

  • SharePoint 2013 Enterprise and SQL Server 2012 Standard edition vs. Enterprise - feature question

I can't seem to find any clear answers to the implications of installing SQL Server 2012 standard edition vs. enterprise in regards to SharePoint 2013.
I understand that to get many of the features you need Enterprise edition of SQL 2012; but, what I can't figure out is if the backend SharePoint SQL 2012 is standard; but, the PowerPivot/SSRS server is Enterprise will we still get the features?
If we have 3 tier SharePoint farm, one of those tiers is for the SQL Server database backend.  If that SQL instance is 2012 standard and we add another server to the farm w/ SQL 2012 Enterprise to handle the tabular models, PowerPivot, and SSRS in integrated
mode will we still get the features?
Or, can we (should we) install Enterprise 2012 as the SharePoint database backend and let that instance triple down as also the PowerPivot and SSRS instance?

    Hi MMilligan,
SQL Server 2012 Standard is not supported PowePivot for SharePoint . In addition, SQL Server 2012 Standard is also not support some Reporting Services Features.

  • Data Retrieval from SSRS 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 standard

    Hello,
We have a virtual machine running SSRS 2008 R2 and a physical server running SQL server 2012 standard.  We are having an issue with a report that is taking almost 10 minutes for the data to be retrieved from the sql 2012 database.  We used the
execution logging query to debug and analyze.  We see that it renders and processes very fast, but the data retrieval time is very slow.  When the same query is run using sql studio mgr. from the SSRS server it runs just fine...it
takes seconds for the results to come up.
I don't believe there is a compatibilty issue because other reports run fine.  We're just having problems with one report.

A long shot, but I've seen where the data type of a report parameter is mismatched against the data type of the table it is being compared against.  SQL profiler would show this clearly.
This would explain why the query returns quickly in ssms but not with the report.

  • Upgrade to server 2012 standard

    Hello
I am currently running Server 2012 Essentials and want to upgrade to Server 2012 Standard.
I have downloaded the 2012 Standard trial ISO and would like to know where to from here? I have done a bit of reading about upgrading essentials 2012 whereby I understand one can do it from PS using a command. What I am not clear about is how I can get server
2012 std onto the server to upgrade? Or is the PS command taking care of that in that it installs 2012 std onto the server?
I had a look at this

and the last post is exactly what I too need to know.
Can someone please advise what steps I need to take to get server 2012 std running?
    TIA

  • Upgrade to Server 2012 Standard (user limit fix) - Not Supported?

Which WD Sentinel do you have? The process is only supported and applies to the WD Sentinel DS5100 and DS6100 since they have different hardware than the DX and RX series.

There aren't any huge differences in the operating system when going from Server 2012 R2 Essentials to Server 2012 R2 Standard. The biggest peice is that users need to purchase the correct licencing before making the swap. Western Digital appears to have created a video to assist users with the transitions from the stock operating system to Server 2012 Standard. (Upgrade DS6100 to Server 2012 Standard) The upgrade process itself based on the video and mention of the upgrade in the administrator's/owners manual gives the appearance that such an upgrade is endorsed/supported by WD. Appearances, however, can be deceiving. Midway through the process I ran into a problem (Raid Config Problem) and attempted to contact customer support over the phone. After being elevated up to a second level of support I was told over the phone that because I had made changes to my unit that it was no longer in its original confiuration, I had voided my warranty, and I am on my own until I restore the unit to its original configuration. I mentioned to the tech that I don't think I did anything outside the bounds of what I should be doing based on the video (link above) and the following exerpt from the administrator's manual: "Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials supports up to 25 users and 50 devices. When your business needs exceed the limit, you can purchase an additional license and upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard." The response I received was fairly surprising to say the least. I was directed to page 80 GPU/GPL section: "Modification of or tampering with the Software, including but not limited to any Open Source Software, is solely at your own risk. Western Digital is not responsible for any such modification or tampering. Western Digital will not support any product in which you have or have attempted to modify the Software supplied by Western Digital." In my specific case, I knew what the issue was and more specifically, I knew exactly what I needed to resolve the issue (the installation binaries for the Raid Configuration Utility). The tech on the phone said that since I had modified the OS, that I needed to reach out to Microsoft for assistance (which makes no sense since the software in question is Western Digital's) and refused to provide me with any information on how I might obtain the installation software. Ultimately I resolved the issue on my own by pure happenstance. I encourage anyone even thinking about buying one of these units for a medium to large business to be very leery and way your options carefully. I'd be happy to provide my case # to anyone at WD who would like to contact me and/or look at the particulars of my problem.

Glad the issue was solved by yourself.
