  • Upgrade Windows 2008 R2 Standard to 2008 R2 Enterprise fails

    Hi,
I am trying to perform an in place upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise. I want to setup some things with failover clustering. The install goes all the way to the last step where it is transferring files and then it hangs. This server
is in my home and I don't have a plethora of servers to play with so I need to upgrade. This server is an HP ProLiant ML330 G6. My other server is a DL385G2 running 2008 R2 Enterprise. They are different because I was scouring eBay and pounced when a deal
    came up. :-)
This server is a DC and it is running:
    DHCP
    DNS
    Exchange 2010
    MS Forefront Security
    Print Server
    DFS Namespace
DFSR (I have a second server that it replicates with)
All HP services (But I disable them for the upgrade)
I suspect that it is failing on a print driver but I am not sure. I disabled all non-MS services from boot. I also added the system environment variable with the iphlp dll. (can't recall it right at this moment)
The way I have been doing this is to power off the server, break the RAID 1 O/S mirror by removing 1 of the drives, power up and run the upgrade. If it fails, I power off, insert the drive I removed and pop out the "upgraded" drive. Boot up, pop
in the failed upgrade drive and let it rebuild.
Any thoughts? The last time it failed I let it back out the upgrade and I copied off a bunch of the setup log files before I restored the previous mirrored drive.
I am also contemplating upgrading this server to 2012 R2. Would using my RAID 1 method above work? I don't know if the upgrade will change something with the server's computer account therefore not allowing me to revert to 2008 R2.
Lastly, I know that I shouldn't have all of these services on one server, but this is in my home and not a work environment. It runs fairly flawlessly.

    Hi,
In addition to Dave Patrick, what is the error message when you upgrade failed?
    Meanwhile, please check this article:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/server_core/archive/2009/10/14/upgrading-windows-server-2008-r2-without-media.aspx
It seems like the server can't be a DC at the time of upgrade.  If you demote a DC using dcpromo, you can upgrade, then re-promote it.

  • Could I upgrade my 2008 r2 Standard license to Enterprise ?

Could I upgrade my 2008 r2 Standard license to Enterprise ?
is there anything related to 2012 licenses ??

    Hi,
There are no possibility to upgrade your 2008 R2 Standard Edition to Enterprise Edition. It was possible only before the availability of the 2012 Version for customers with active Software assurance for Standard Edition in open value with the step UP license
    from Standard to Enterprise.
Actually, the only way to have the 2008 R2 enterprise Edition is to purchase the Standard Edition of Windows Server 2012 R2 Version than you may downgrade to the Enterprise Edition 2008 R2.
Note: for Enterprise Edition 2008 R2 you have one physical + 4 VMs. if you downgrade your Standard Edition 2012 R2 to Enterprise 2008 R2, you receive only 2 VMs for your Enterprise Edition. If you wants to have 4 VMs, than you need two Windows Server 2012
    R2 Standard Edition licenses.
    I hope is helpful
    thanks

OR their is nothing to worry about it I guess their is memory limitation between both of them. Please suggest

    Hi,
Here you can find the officially Hardware and Software Requirements for SQL Server 2008 R2:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.105).aspx
There should be NO problem as much as I know if the basic limitation fit you (as shanky mentioned).
I had (an clients still have) several servers with Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard & SQL
Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and Standard with no problem (today I have one old developing server with this exact installations work great for several years).

  • Issue in Upgrading Windows 2008 R2 Standard server to Windows 2012 Standard Srever

    Hi
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 stadard running... (came with the server).
To use 64GB, we have just purchased a licence key (retail) and downloaded ISO (Evaluation version) to upgrade.
Then I got this error message saying that
"Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard cannot be upgraded to Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI). You can choose to install a new copy of Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation (Server with a GUI) instead, but this is different from
an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs."
Well, fresh installation is not an option for me. no way..
I read somewhere that it is because I am trying to upgrade from licenced 2008 R2 standard to evaluation 2012 standard. Then I saw a screenshot where you supply a licence key after selecting an edition to choose..
I don't get that screen sinceit is the evaluation version.
    Well, I am supposed to upgrade the system before the end of the new year...  now I am in a panic.. - - ;;
Can anyone help me with this please???

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Agree with words of “Dave & Tim” and based on my research, we need to perform a clean installation of Windows Server 2012 Evaluation Versions instead upgrading.
However, if we have licensed Windows Server 2012, we can upgrade to Windows Server 2012 by referring to the Upgrading previous retail versions of Windows Server to Windows Server 2012 part of
Evaluation Versions and Upgrade Options for Windows Server 2012.
    Hope it helps!
    Regards.

Please help As i am running out of time as i have to upgrade TFS for that first step is to install SQL server.

    Hello,
The following are a few things you can try:
Copy the media to the local disk drive, unzip it (in case you are installing from an ISO file, and run SQL Server setup from there.
Try to unregister and register the Windows Installer with the following two commands:
    msiexec /unregister
    msiexec /regserver
Try to use Process Monitor to log the detailed error produced when the installation of dw20sharedamd64.msi fails. You can download Process Monitor from the following link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645
Share with us the error captured by Process Monitor.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows 7 64-bit Pro not connecting to SQL Server on domain Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

I am upgrading computers from Windows XP Professional to Windows 7 Professional but I have a problem getting one of the stock control software programs we use to connect to our SQL Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard from the new Windows 7 computers.
Our computers are connected to a domain and so is the SQL Server. The Windows XP computers allows each standard domain user to log on and connect to the SQL Server via the stock control software program.
But on the Windows 7 Pro computers standard domain users can't connect to the SQL Server but the domain administrator accounts on the same Windows 7 Pro computers can connect to the SQL Server via the stock control program.
I have setup the server alias, server name and port number via the SQL Server Client Network Utility (cliconfg.exe) so I know this isn't the problem as it works when I am logged on as domain administrator.
It seems to be something to do with domain user permissions and Windows 7 Pro. There seems to be a change from Windows XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro that doesn't allow standard domain users to connect to an SQL Server. But I can't find anything about this and
can't workout how to fix it except to make all the users domain administrators which is obviously not a good thing to do. So basically I I think I need to create a group policy that allows the users to connect to the SQL Server but I have no experience doing
this and don't know where to begin.
Thanks for all you guys help and I hope someone can provide me with the solution to this problem.

    Hi,
    Was there any message?
Please run the stock control software as Administrator to check if it was caused by UAC.
If it could run as administrator, please add the standard domain user to local administrator.

  • Lms 3.2 and window server 2008 r2 standard

we have bought lms 3.2 and window server 2008 r2 standard. Now we know, it cant be used togetther
Could we upgrade to lms 4.0.1 ? If so, how can we do ?
    thank you.
    Duyen.

Correct, LMS 3.2 is not supported on Windows 2008 R2.  You can upgrade to LMS 4.0 (which is supported on R2), but that is not a free upgrade from LMS 3.x.  You can, however, download a free 90-day eval of LMS 4.0 from http://www.cisco.com/go/nmsevals .
It sounds like you need to contact your reseller or account manager to see what they can do.  If you just purchased LMS 3.2, you may be able to get a free or discounted upgrade to 4.0.

  • Virtual Copy of Physical Machine MS Server 2008 R2 Standard Genuine issue

I have created a cirtual copy of a physical machine to conduct software upgrade testing in a SCADA system.
My copy of Windows server 2008 R2 Standard is no longer genuine.
I tried to buy a copy online, but it is no longer availiable on the website from Microsoft according to the Chat I had in the website.
How can I get this copy genuine?

Several vendors still have OEM versions for sale. If you can get your testing done inside of 180 days then evaluation version may work.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard "Certificate Authority Service" / Exchange Server 2010 EMC not starting and no AD connectivity for authentication.

    Hello,
I am a new IT Manager at this company and need assistance big time. Their environment looks as follows:
Server 1. Domain Controller Server (Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard) running active directory.
Server 2. Email Server (Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard) running Exchange Server 2010 .
    * Note. No back ups to work with aside from whats mentioned below.
DC had a virus infection causing a lot of issues on the shared network drives 2 days ago locking up all the files with a crypto ransom virus. Running Avast suppressed the infection. Had to recover the file shares which luckily had a back up.
The issue is that the Exchange Server 2 post this lost connectivity with the AD Server 1. Exchange Server 2 when launching EMC could not launch the console stating the following:
"No Exchange servers are available in any Active Directory sites. You can’t connect to remote
Powershell on a computer that only has the Management Tools role installed."
Shortly after I found that it is possible the EMC launcher was corrupt and needed to be reinstalled following another blog post. I deleted the exchange management console.msc  per instructions only to discover I couldnt relaunch it because there was
no way how. So I copied another msc file that happened to be on the DC Server 1  back to Exchange Server 2 and got it to launch again.
Another post said that it might be an issue with the Domain Account for the Computer, so to delete it in the AD Server 1 only to find that rejoining it from Exchange Server 2 using Computer>Properties> Chage Settings > Change is greyed out because
it is using the Certificate Authority Service.
I tried manually re-adding the computer in AD and modeling permissions after another server in group settings but no go. After this I was unable to login to the Exchange Server 2 with domain accounts but only local admin, receiving the following Alert:
"The Trust Relationship between this workstation and primary domain failed."
I tried running the Power Shell tools on Exchange Server 2 to rejoing and to reset passwords for domain accounts as noted in some other blogs but no luck as the Server 2 could not make the connection with Server1 or other errors it kept spitting out.
I also during the investigation found the DNS settings were all altered on both the Server 1 and Server 2 which I luckily was able to change back to original because of inventorying it in the beginning when I started.
I need help figuring out if I need to rejoin the Exchange Server 2 manually by disabling the Certificate Authority Service (or removing the CA as listed here:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/fb23deab-0a12-410d-946c-517d5aea7fae/windows-server-2008-r2-with-certificate-authority-service-to-rejoin-domain?forum=winserversecurity
and getting exchange server to launch again. (Mind you I am relatively fresh to server managing) Please help E-Mail has been down for a whole day now!
