Upgrade software... location and backup?
I purchased the new apps from iTunes last night, and upgraded my iTunes/QuickTime to the latest versions. Is the iPod upgrade software part of the iTunes library of that machine? And, if so, can it be backed up somehow in case I have a system (or iPod) problem?

I installed the 1.1.3 update (which was very small and free of charge), but surely that little 12k file doesn't contain all the new apps...?
The purchased software download said ("153MB" or close to that) as it was trying to download. It failed with network timeouts every time I tried it last night... that's the one I'm wanting to back up (once I get it to download, that is...)
I thought perhaps I could try downloading it from here at work, where my net connection is more reliable, but I'm guessing I have to do it from the machine that's associated with my iTunes account.

I am using Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Updated from 10.6.7 with manual download and install.
Problem: Sorftware update do not work. The update start and after a while the message: The update of "iTunes" can´t be installed. Software Update can´t connect to the update server. Make shure you´re connected to the internet, and try again. iTunes is only an example.

I have moved to a new location and there may be an issue with the modem, but I have two other iMacs running standard Mac OS 10.6.7 with no such problems. They have the same network settings as the server. I have also tried using the same network ports in the office.
I got the same errors with Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard 10.6.7.

Implementing a file server and backup solution
Hi there - Looking for sage advice from the experts! Here's my dilemma:
I have a 1st gen Intel iMac, and I recently picked up the 13-inch aluminum MacBook. Both have 250 Gb drives. I have a fair amount of media and software using all but 9 gigs of space on the iMac. One more Final Cut project should eat the majority of that:-)
Before I start moving media over to the MacBook and run into the same space issues, I'd like to come up with a storage and back up solution that does the following:
1. Provides one centralized location for all media (music, photos, video files)
2. Keep back ups of centralized location AND backups of both iMac and MacBook--I don't want to lose any work in progress.
I'd love to hear how others manage this problem. Can a Time Machine solve the problem? Am I looking at a RAID solution?

In a case where the same workbook is saved locally and on the application server and this error happens, what is the decisive factor? Meaning why does this happen for some workbooks and not for others? Is it a question of size, number of queries, other?
Do embedded excel functionalities and update links also interfere?

Upgrading Software -- what to delete?

I just purchased a brand new Mac Pro G5. I transferred the system drive from my old G4 to my new G5. Now my new G5 has old versions of FCP (3.0 & 4.5). I installed my upgraded version of FCP (5.1.2).
I got a weird error in FCP 5.1 when I was rendering my project.
Is it safe to delete old versions of FCP? Will deleting old versions effect my upgraded software? And, how do I uninstall safely without messing up the 5.1 software?
Any specific feedback/advice would be great!

Do you mean you physically installed the old system drive on the new Mac - or did you transfer the System Software?
If so, did you drag it, clone it, or what?

Ipod Touch can't find Bluetooth device. (Jam Box)
Upgraded Itunes software did a backup and restore on the Ipod.
My PC sees Jam Box fine. IPod used to work with JamBox. Reset Jambox, no luck.
Followed every instruction from the forums. Still no luck.
Reset Jam Box to factory settings.Did a network reset on the Ipod after the backup and restore. No luck

Time Capsule in Yosemite can be used for router/internet but Mac cannot locate for backups.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
I upgraded itunes since a pop up stated that I would have to upgrade it so it can recognize my iphone5's new software. I upgraded the itunes and now when I plug in the iphone its asking "set up as new iphone" will this delete everything on my phone? Also why is it forcing me to set up as a new iphone, why doesn't it recognize it like it did before I upgraded iTunes. I'm afaid I will lose all my apps, music, pictures etc. please help. thank you.
You are correct. Corrupted files are in the backup. If you've already restored the iPhone it has been erased and starting over is the way to go in order to eliminate the corrupted files.

I'm trying to upgrade an ipad and in the system under general there is no software update. What do I do?
The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

Upgraded my iMac and Office software no longer supported but I have many documents to access.
I recently upgraded my iMac and all its contents were transferred over to the new Yosemite model from Snow Leopard. I find I can no longer open and use the software Office for Mac 2004 and all its associated documents.

If they are no longer available then users should be warned that unavailable items are about to be removed from the store before it happens. Backups of my music, files and external software purchases I have, the App Store purchases install directly and as such are not available as a download .dmg file....or are they, am I doing something wrong!!!

I can't get my Windows 7 pc to recognise my old LG VN251 phone via USB. The verison software upgrade assistant runs and my phone is up to date. I do get a window that pops up that says I can either run the bootstrap or look at the files on the phone, but I cannot see any photos. Thoughts?

I did a software upgrade to IOS6 and my Iphone4S is now unable to update. Do I lose all my contacts and calendar entries when I restore?
You should be syncing all your contacts and calendars with your computer, either via iCloud or iTunes, so it is easy to re-sync them back to the phone after you restore.

I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard. Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?
Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine. -
