I'm finding I need the most recent operating system to get third party programs to work... so, I have an old MacBook Pro w/ following specs:
Processor: 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 2 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM
I just bought the Mac Box Set of Snow Leopard - did I waste my money - should I return it because I can't use it with what I have?

Hi teach4evr: Why would you think you couldn't use the Mac Box set? Your listed computer specs are very capable of running Snow Leopard. I am running Snow Leopard on a first generation MacBook Pro (1.83gHz) with 2gB of RAM.

Hello, BD Aqua many thanks for your prompt reply. It's a gray one. And the message is "OSX can't 'be installed on this computer " or something like that. The installing program doesn't launch anything but just ask me the language I choice and after ...relaunching and relaunching ... nothing happens. However when I' ve called previously the Apple support they told me to upgrade directly in Snow Leopard. I want to be sure to have the possibility to install it before purchasing it and in which version ?
And do I have to erase my previous disk as somebody recommand it before installing the new OS ?

I do not need to upgrade that much because 10.4.11 is so great and I hate to leave it. Paying the full price of an operating system does not make sense to me. I have a Power PC dual 2 gig G5 running OS X 10.4.10. I know at some point that Leopard will not support the power PC platform, but I also know I probably will have one more upgrade path before my computer is no longer supported. I have not upgraded because My machine runs perfect. But I also know that a lot of my software will not run when I upgrade. Pro Tools, Maya,Mocha, various plug ins for Pro Tools. What path should I take to my final upgrade to the latest OS?

Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...

But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
General requirements
   * Mac computer with an Intel processor
    * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
    * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

That disk is very probably formated as FAT 32, the normal format for PCs. FAT 32 cannot support files larger than 4 GB; also, it corrupts some types of Mac OS files. If you want to securely backup your mac files, you must have a disk prepared for Mac OS.
Therefore, open Disk Utility, choose again 1 partition for your external disk and, under Options, GUID partition map (it may also be a boot disk for an intel mac), then format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled. Y0u are done.
If you want to exchange data with PCs, you should chose Master Boot REcord and NTFS format, for this you must use a additional utility like NTFS-3G. But note that mac files may also get corrupt in NTFS format.

The only operating system you can upgrade to is OS X 10.5 Leopard. Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor, which the Powerbooks don't have. I confirmed the other day that you can still buy Leopard from the US online Apple store at 800-MY-APPLE.
Before you update, be sure you download any updates to non-Apple software that may be needed to run under Leopard.

You can buy Lion in the App Store now, but move to iCloud now. If you wait to Mountain Lion, you will only have Mail in Snow Leopard, so you will lose syncing unless you use Lion or Mountain Lion. It's up to you

They sent me 10.6.3, however, it looks like I need 10.6.8 to get the new itunes which was my reason for upgrading in the first place. My son got the ipod touch 5th generation ($225) which requires the new itunes. How do I get my new Snow Leopard 10.6.3 upgrade to be 10.6.8? The price tag is adding up quickly!

Or update using the this download > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo

Can't scan from my HPC4280 with new Snow Leopard

I downloaded the new snow leopard and now my HPC4280 All In One scanner is not working. Printer and copier works fine. I've tried the 3 fixes from the HP support but nothing is working. I went to System Preference clicked on printer/fax, click on the left dialog box clicked on HP AIO to view the options and when I click on scanner it said not available or something like that, I then did what HP said in the" Important Gotcha" clicking on - at the bottom to delete, then clicking the + to add back, after I did that, the scan icon no longer appeared. Scanner was working just fine prior to the new snow leopard
