Upgrade T61p with SSD

I have a Thinkpad T61p Type 6460 - EEG T9300 and I want to upgrade my HD to a SSD Intel 320 - 300GB disk, and Windows 7.  What is the procedure so I do not get trouble?

This is probably just personal preferrence, but I prefer to run the lenovo system update before installing any windows updates. The reason is a newly installed windows version may not have drivers for all your hardware, windows update will see this and will try to install the best one's it feels match your hardware. I've seen this cause problems so I always run lenovo system update first, verify all the drivers for your hardware are working, then let windows update apply anything it recommends after I look at each update to confirm it's really something I want installed.
One specific issue that applies to the T61p is the nVidia drivers. If you install the latest version released by nVidia you're likely to have a problem, you need to first install the drivers authorized by Lenovo, then if you want to get the most performance from your graphics system you can update to a newer version (at your own risk).

  • Upgrade MBP with SSD+HDD to Mountain Lion

I have a MBP mid-2009 with 4Gb RAM, which I replaced the HDD with an SSD and moved the HDD to the optical bay. The current Snow Leopard OS boots from the SSD (all system files are in the SSD), however I keep the home folders (/Users) in the HDD. This is because my SSD is small while I have a lot of large personal files. Now I want to upgrade the OS to Mountain Lion (required to run certain apps). My main concern is whether the ML upgrade will break my system configuration (perhaps lose files, unbootable), because my SSD+HDD system configuration is nonstandard. Any experience or tips are very welcome. Thanks!

You shouldn't have any problems. However, I will suggest the following:
Repair your hard drive and permissions before upgrading.
Make a backup of your current system, preferable a bootable one, just in case.
After you download Mountain Lion, you might wish to do this:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
        installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
      a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
          the process has completed.
      d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
      f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
         drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
      a. Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
      b. Open Disk Utility.
      c. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
      d. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      e. Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
      f. Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
      g. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above (you still have to do your own download of Lion/Mountain Lion) you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process of Steps 2 through 4.

  • Buy a MacBook pro with SSD or upgrade to SSD?

Hey guys! Hope you can help me out with this one!
I have just purchased a MacBook Pro 13" with i7 2.9 GHz processor, 8 GB ram and a 750 GB 5400 rpm HDD.
The simple reason that I bought it with a HDD and not a SSD is that I could not afford the SSD.
Now after searching the web I have come across a huge amount of videos and threads on various Apple forums talking about how easy it is to upgrade your MacBook Pro to have a SSD instead of a HDD. I have also researched the cost of such an upgrade and it seems incredibly cheap compared to buying a MBP with a SSD already installed.
How is this possible? To me it seems to good to be true that it is cheaper to upgrade your computer with a SSD than buying a computer with a SSD already installed?! Does such an upgrade come with a lot of downsides? Or is it really true that you can save yourself money by doing the upgrade yourself after purchasing the computer?
    Thanks a lot!

Because Apple gouges its customers on any upgraded from Standard, Stock, configurations.
No real downsides except that you mi=ust Enable TRIM support yourself once you install an afermarket SSD. If Apple installs one, Branded as an Apple SSD, then TRIM is Auto Enabled, Go figure.
The next, and only other, downside is you will lose some storage capacity as a SSD of 750GBs, or even close to 750GBs, will cost you lots of money. So most people install 256GB models which in your case would drop the total internal drive capacity by 500GBs+/-.

  • G50-70 59421783 upgrade with SSD 250 GB and to 8GB RAM

    Hi, i would like to buy G50-70 59421783 ( Intel Core i5 4210U (1.70/2.70GHz, 2MB L3)
    HD 1TB SATA - RAM 4GB - Display 15,6" wide
    Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n - Bluetooth 4.0 - Windows 8.1 64-bit
Graphic card AMD Radeon R5 M230 2GB ) and so I'll become a LENOVO user!!!
Is possible to upgrade it adding more RAM  ? Is there another slot available?
Is also possible to replace the HDD with SSD 250 Gb (MZ-7TE250BW 840 EVO) ? Is there any issue related (e.g. connector, driver, size ... )? I red the MZ-7TE250BW 840 EVO is 2,5" : is it perfectly suitable  ?
Many thanks in advance for the answer.
    Cheers,

    hi Giacomo,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums
    Regarding your questions:
    1. Looking at page 28 of the HMM, the G50-70 uses the following RAM:
    DDR3L-1,600 MHz SODIMM × 2 (max 16 GB)
    - Link to picture
For the upgrade, you will need to look under the hood to identify if you have 2GB (x2), or a single 4GB.stick. Alternatively, you can also use CPU-Z for the identification.
    - Link to picture
    2. For the HDD,  G50-70 with machine type 59421783 uses an ST1000LM024 8G 9.5mm 5.4K 1TB HDD.
Although the Samsung MZ-7TE250BW 840 EVO is 7mm thick, it will still fit on the G50-70 and should work properly as there's a bracket that holds the drive in place (see page 37-38 of the HMM).

    Hey,
I want to upgrade RAM and SSD on my macbook pro, identifier 5,3, and I want to make sure the parts I picked will be compatible with my Macbook.
I'm specifically not sure about its support of 512GB.

Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
    Now about that Crucial drive:

It's not clear to me that this issue was resolved. The last post goes nowhere!
    I always use OWC:

Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it.

  • Tecra R940 with SSD Windows 7 boot failure

My company has purchased Tecra R940 laptops and are replacing the existing HDD with Kingston SSDNow 200 V+ 120GB SSD drives. On a test unit after installing the SSD, the laptop was rebuilt with our corporate image (Windows 7 x64) which completed successfully.
Post build however a number of issues are apparent:
    1. Occasionally during a reboot, the laptop will post and then hang at the "starting windows" screen before the Windows logo animation is displayed and with the hard drive light on solid. After a period of time an Windows recovery is attempted and eventually an error reported:
    Status: 0xc00000e9
Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred
This issue does not occur at every boot but once in every 2 or 3.
    2. The following error is logged in the Windows System log
    Source: ATAPI
    Event ID: 11
Description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0
I have tried the following in order to resolve the issue:
    1. Upgraded the R940 BIOS to latest available (6.40).
    2. Confirmed that the BIOS SATA Controller Mode is set to AHCI.
    3. Confirmed there are no available SSD drive firmware updates.
    4. Installed the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from Toshiba (11.0.0.1032).
    5. Tried an alternate SSD. Same errors noted, so not a faulty SSD.
    6. Tried the SSD in a Toshiba Portege R930. In this case the errors above are not apparent.
    7. Reinstalled the original HDD. In this case the errors above are not apparent.
    8. Confirmed a 2nd unit (with SSD installed) logs the same Event ID 11.
My testing has left me at a point where I believe there is something wrong at the R940 end with either hardware or software that does not like SSD's.
Has anyone resolved a similar problem or have any thoughts on resolving this?
    Thank you in advance.

    > Reinstalled the original HDD. In this case the errors above are not apparent
So using an HDD everything works properly
So the controller seems to be OK.
I searched for Even ID 11 error description and the Event ID 11 source disk means The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0
There are many people having such issue with different notebooks and different SSD drives.
There is also different recommendation to solve this:
Someone could solve this my SSD drive firmware update
The other one solved this by running a full SMART scan with repair (reallocation of unstable sectors)
There is also an newer version of the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver available on Intel page.
So its worth to update this,

  • Can I make a bootcamp Partition on the HDD on an iMac 21.5" with SSD and HDD

I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5" . I am not sure yet, whether to get one with ssd and hdd pre-installed. But I would like to, cause it's much faster.
In the manual of the boot camp it says that if you have more than one internal hard drive and you wanna put bootcamp on one that isn't the first, you have to remove the other hard drives. That would be hard cause you can't open the iMac easily. And especially not without loosing guarantee.
So my question is. Has anyone installed windows with bootcamp on an hdd partition on an iMac pre-installed with ssd (on which is macos x) and hd(on which I want my windows partition and the Mac files such as photos and videos)? It must be possible without opening the iMac right?
    Thanks for your help.

27" iMac: Apple's SSDs are still quite slow
    Community Search: "iMac SSD"
That article is misleading to an extent and applied to the workstations with 4 internal drives and easy to access - and misleading as to why other drives had to be removed etc.
As for warranty, it use to be a customer upgraded part to swap out hard drives. All that is needed to disconnect the data cable going to the drive.

  • Macbook Pro with SSD 10.8 OS install CC desktop failed

System disk (256GB SSD) has 210GB before installation process started, 16GB system DIMM available, OS is v10.8. The process of updating Creative Cloud Desktop could not be finished, system prompted warning message of "insufficient memory for app installation" even SDD still has 140GB left.

    Dear Kapil,
I still failed to install CC desktop successfully. Same failure encountered. It looks like the installation process could not be finished for some reason, the storage space in SSD was keeping consuming for more than 60GB. I would not believe CC desktop needs more than 60G storage for installation. I had already installed it on my Mac Pro without any problem. I tried to install it on my MBP as backup. My issue may also relate to my changing level of my subscription last week. I upgraded my subscription level from single app to full function last week by the help from Adobe Service staff. However, I still saw the older subscription was listed on my subscription list, even the service staff said he or she has already cancelled my single app subscription successfully. I started to get warning message of trial expiration soon today while I was using Photoshop CC. This did tell me my single app subscription has been cancelled. Why I still saw it in my subscription list? It is really confusing.

Can I change hard disk with SSD drive in Toshiba NB100 ?
The Hard disc in this model is same size as SSD 2.5" drive?

    Hi
As mentioned above: the SATA controller is supported so you will need to use a SATA SSD drive usually it should not be a big problem to upgrade the notebook with an SSD drive in some cases it could be possible that the SSD firmware needs to be updated but this depends on the SSD drive manufacturer
However, the SSD drive is much faster than a common HDD. Therefore you should notice a faster performance

        http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c03325481
It supports 8Gb max. CPU-Z (SPD tab) should show you RAM information including brand. You can work out what do you need using that information. My suggestion: use information on the SPD tab INCLUDING brand.

This upgrade with SSD is not supported by Toshiba so all you do is on your risk. Check please this forum. If Im remembering well some people have already posted own experiences.
I think in most cases they have ordered such HDD/SSD caddy but disc drive was not recognized at all.
In my opinion you should not do such upgrade.
    RAM
According notebook specification you can upgrade RAM up to 16 GB and at the bottom side under memory cover you should find two memory slots. How to upgrade RAM is described in users manuals. Check please page 72.
Compatible RAM modules for your notebook model are:
    4GB DDR3L-1600 - PA5104U-1M4G
    8GB DDR3L-1600 - PA5104U-1M8G
