Upgrade ThinkPad W510 to Win 10

I want to try to update a 5 year old ThinkPad W510, which I have not really been using much, from Win 7 to Win 10. I don't yet see it in the compatability list yet so I am not sure whether it will be viable although hardware-wise it meets the Win 10 specs. I looked at the recommendations for upgrading from Win 7 to Windows 8 and I will attempt to follow those as a first step. 1) It recommended updating the BIOS as there was a BIOS change relating to Windows 8. I have done that.2) I will remove a lot of unused software. Those that I want to retain might need to be updated and I will install the latest ones after the upgrade.3) There was a list of five software programs / drivers that were indicated as being required to be removed. I will do that prior to the update.4) There was a whole slew of Lenovo software and some drivers that were recommended to be removed. I can do that also but it seems that Lenovo has not developed updated versions yet. I think it might be best to wait for those before committing to the upgrade.5) Regarding drivers, when I ran Windows Update under Win 7, it has 7 driver updates available: a) AuthenTec driver update for TouchChip Fingerprint CoProcessor [my device is made by UPEK] b) Intel Lan - Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection c) Lenovo LCD (1366x768) [This is the .INF file defining the ThinkPad display] d) Lenovo Other Hardware - Lenovo PM (Power Mgmt) Device e) nVidia - Graphics Adapter Quadro FX 880M f) Ricoh Company - Storage - PCIe Memory Stick Host Controller g) Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device   Using Windows Update to install drivers has been prone to problems for many. I intend to update what I can from the Lenovo drivers site. a) Lenovo has an update to the Fingerprint software for Win7/Win8 which includes a new driver. Apparently AuthenTec bought up the technology from UPEK, that explains the name change. Since Lenovo recommends that the Fingerprint software be uninstalled, I am not sure whether to install the new software and then uninstall it prior to the Win 10 install or whether Lenovo will be coming out with a new version for Win 10. b) For the Intel LAN Adapter I will install the Lenovo update. c) I probably will let Windows Update install the LCD .INF file. Lenovo has two different versions, one appears to be newer which had included support for Win 10 and then removed it (?). d) The Power Mgmt Device is questionable since I was not able to find any update from Lenovo. e), f), g) I will use Lenovo's updates for these.  [ I would hope Win 10 would apply any driver updates that would be needed, but whether Lenovo will have new ones available shortly after the releae of Win 10, I don't know. ] Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,   JohnD

According to the information I have been able to find at Lenovo Support on upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and from Windows 7 to Windows 10, there appears to be a bunch of Lenovo software that must be or is recommended to be removed before doing the jump to Win 10. Whether I will be able to get updates for them at this point, I don't know. Since this will basically be used as a test system for Win 10, for somethings (such as the Fingerprint reader and a lot of other items) it is not a big deal. I will be happy to have basic functions working such as TouchPad, Keyboard, Ethernet, and Wireless. i will have some limited software installed which I also hope will continue to function. I suspect that Win 10 may update some of the drivers as part of the installation process. This is what I have gathered regarding what should remain and what should be uninstalled: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ KEEP:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------     Intel Network Connection Drivers

  • Firefox 4.0 beta 10 crashes my Thinkpad W510

Firefox Beta 4.10 crashes the video driver on my Thinkpad W510 running Windows 7 64. This behavior did not occur using Firefox 3.0 and it doesn't occur using Internet Explorer 9.0 Beta. I use my laptop at work in a docking station hooked up to 3 monitors. Firefox 4.0 Beta has not crashed while docked. It only crashes when it is being used as a portable machine using the laptops display. The last crash ID I had was in December because I quit using Firefox and switched to Internet Explorer.
Firefox doesn't allow me to edit my sharepoint site properly.

    * Upgrade to Firefox 4.0 Beta 11.
    * Upgrade your graphic driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-266.58-whql-driver.html or from your computer manufacturer support site.
    * If it does not solve your issue, try to disable Norton IPS 2.0 that is known to be crashy for Firefox 4. See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]].
    * Using the latest version of plugins is also good to prevent crashes, [http://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/ check your plugin].

  • Connect Pro doesn't recognised the ThinkPad webcam in Win 7 64-bit

Since upgrading my ThinkPad X300 to Win 7 64-bit, Connect Pro (7 and 7.5) wouldn't recognised the webcam. Funnily enough, ConnectNow from Acrobat.com doesn't have the same problem.

This just doesn't work. No matter how many times you tick the box on/off. And it's really a pain while working with projects on different workstations containing around 1500 video files! Especially now that Premiere isn't smart enough to search the subfolders of a project itself...
Anyone from Adobe that could give us a notice about if this feature will be fixed and when?

  • Thinkpad W510 and W540 accessories compatibility

    Hello all,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and I am looking to upgrade to a W540. For my current W510 I have a docking station and two power adapters. Will they all still work on a W540?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello.
No, neither the dock nor the power supplies will work. The xx40 series of ThinkPads use the new rectangle tip power jacks instead of the barrel shaped ones, thus requiring new models of both.
    Cheers!

Is there any indication of the specific folder you are having problems with. Are you logged in as the administrator (or the same as when you installed) and have anti-virus disabled during the update? You might also try the updates from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=1&platform=Windows.

  • Problem installing Free BSD 64-bit with VMware Player on Thinkpad W510

I installed VM Ware Player on the latest Thinkpad W510 with a 2.66ghz Intel processor. I am getting an error message indicating that the CPU doesn't support long mode. I was advised by the freenode #freeBSD channel that long mode is x86_64/amd64/emt64. This same channel also suggested that I tell vmware it was a 64bit guest. But I don't know how to do this. How do I do this? VMware Player didn't offer me any user options during the install. Is this something I should setup in the bios of the Thinkpad? Or something else? Is there more than one version of the VMware pLayer?

Look on BIOS if VT is enabled.
    Best regards.

  • Thinkpad W510 and W530 accessories compatibility

    Hello all,
From a previous post, I found that accessories such as the power adapter and docking station will not work between the Lenovo Thinkpad W510 and W540 models. Instead, are they compatible between a W510 and W530 and if not, how about a W510 and W520?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No. W530 and W520 use the same docks and AC adapters; W510 uses different ones. All 3 have the same shape of battery, but the W530 needs one with an additional chip. A W530 battery will work in any of them. Nothing fits a W540.  The only difference in the dock on the T510 (vs. T520, T530) is the AC jack is keyed for the 170W adapter.

  • ThinkPad W510 HDD LED indicator always on

    Hi,
I'm using a ThinkPad W510 but I notice that the HDD light is always on, though there's no significant I/O task.
I remember the HDD light is blinking only when you're doing something with the hard disk, and most of other time, it stays off.
The machine is run with Windows 8. Don't know if there's anything wrong with it. Does anybody have the same situation? \
    Thanks alot

I would suggest adding them back a few at a time, and see when it starts the behavior.

Elements 5 will not start from windows.old after upgrading from vista to win 7

  • Which HDD to upgrade Thinkpad T30 after a HDD crash

    Hi everybody,
I left my laptop to a friend that decided to make a defrag to the HDD.
Unfortunately for me HDD's arm broke during the defrag (reorganizing the disc). It happens sometimes especially if the HDD is old.
    Mine was a IC25N040ATCS04-0 (40 Go, 4200 RPM, Ultra-ATA/100) from 2002.
I'd like to change it for an upgraded one. But I am not sure which one I can put in it?
I will have to re-install all the laptop software, bios included???
Anyway, I've seen that you can install HDD over 100 Go capacity, is it easy, whiche ones to you advices.
Is there tips and tricks better to know before doing any change.
My computer is still working a bit if something is needed to be checked.
Thanks in advance for any help you could give.
    Best regards.

Ps: Please excuse my bad english, I did not practice for ages.

    Hi ever23,
    It supports:-
PATA or ATA-6 2.5 inch form factor drive
12.5 mm for systems without the touch pad
9.5mm for systems with the touch pad
    2.5 inch form factor
    Dimensions (mm): 9.5 (H) by 70 (W) by 100 (D)
The following drives it supports:- http://computers.shop.ebay.com/Hard-Drives-/158830/i.html?_nkw=t30+drive&_catref=1&_dmpt=PCC_Drives_...
Software, yes, you would need to install. BIOS, no you don't but perhaps you would need to upgrade it nonetheless.
    Hope it helps.

  • Built-in mic on Thinkpad Edge E545 Win 8.1 not working

OK so when I got this computer shipped to me from school back in November of 2014 it had Win. 7 on it. I had the Windows 8 recovery disc and decided to use that to upgrade the OS. Since that day my mic has been on steriods. I also keep getting the stupid message about the Dolby digital audio drivers not working. I've done everything I could find to to on the interwebs. I had installed the update first and still got it.  Then I uninstalled, reinstalled, and restarted the laptop... still got the message.  Now I can't even use Skype.  PLEASE someone with updated information help! I need this thing to work for school since I have tutoring groups via Skype and such.  Many thanks.

Thanks for your answer! I was able to solve the problem by running the pre-installed System Update rather than some of the solutions that had been poster somewhere else in the forum.
In any case, for the record, the path of the file I was referring to is C:\Program Files (x86)\ Thinkpad \ Utilities\ PWMTR64V.dll

  • Thinkpad W510 Lacks Quality

A new W510 Touchscreen model is what I got 3 weeks ago. I am dissapointed about the quality of this machine. This machine is mostly all plasic and feels different from the previous thinkpad models I had ( X201 ).  There is just too much body flex all over and the plastic around the plamrest area makes noise when you place your hands on it to type. I am not trying to discourage anyone here, what i am trying to find out is if others share the same issues or did i get a bad one one out of the bunch.
    -Alex

I actually like the build quality, the exterior is really solid, especially the LCD exterior and hinges.  But yes the palm area and that entire piece is a bit thin and cheap.  It's probably loose because it's made to detach easily which is great for upgrading and replacing but not so great when you can press down on it easily.
The only thing really of poor quality is the interior LCD plastic framing that holds the touch screen in place.  The bottom portion already peeled away a little probably due to the amount of heat in that area.  But it's something I've experienced in the past with my tablet PC, and I think it's just something that happens with touchscreen type.  Mine is only about a week and 1/2 old now so I don't think it should have happened so soon but I don't really care about that so won't be returning it to get it fixed.
Also if you open up the keyboard and the base plate, there is an even thinner piece of plastic just under the left side of the keyboard, don't grab it when you try to pull that plastic base off, it'll bend really easily.

  • Upgrading Thinkpad R61 from Vista-32Bit to Win7-64Bit_stuck & need Help

I'm in the mids of upgrading my ThinkPad R61
I've added memory to 4Gb and a newer drive 320Gb
I've purchased the Win7 Home Premium Vista to Win7 upgrade (CDs).
Can I upgrade this R61 laptop to Win 7-64Bit OS?
Thus far, I cannot boot from the Win7 Upgrade CD
So I tried with a USB external DVD.  I got past the Boot stage, however, it's prompting me for a CD/DVD driver before it can continue to load.
I am sensing that I will be prompted multiple times for additional drivers (perhaps 64Bit) before I ever complete the upgrade process.
What is the quickest & easiest path to upgrade my laptop to Win7-64Bit.  (At least, to the point where I can boot from the upgraded drive).
    My ThinkPad R61 Model =  #8932CTO

    Thanks GMAC-R60
My intention was to actualy do a clean install to Win7 -64Bit.
Perhaps it has everything to do with using an upgrade (32-Bit & 64-Bit) version CD of Win7 from Vista?
When I tried to upgrade to 64Bit, it eventually took me to a screen prompting for a CD/DVD driver to continue the upgrade.  I suspected it was looking for a 64bit driver (likely the SATA controller), so I opted out thinking it will be lloking for more drivers through the upgrade process.
I then successfully upgraded it to Win7 - 32Bit version.
However, I would like to take advantage of the 64Bit speed & useability of the additional RA I have inside the laptiop.
I noticed that Lenovo have a listing of Win7 64Bit drivers under their Support section.  If one was to download and expand them them to a folder, would it be possible to essentialy upgrade to 64Bit?
Or, perhaps get CD copy from Lenovo with all the required files & drivers?

  • Can't upgrade Thinkpad warranty

Click on "Upgrade warranty" in Thinkvantage Toolbox, takes me to web page where I enter model and serial number and then click continue which takes me to a blank page with url http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/gbweb/LenovoPortal/en_GB/config.workflow:ContinueWar... which remains steadfastly blank. This happens in both Firefox and IE8. Help!

    Hi,
Yes, there seems to be a problem with the website, I'll report it to lenovo. In the meantime, for warranty I would suggest calling the support in your region:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=migr-4hwse3

  • Upgrade Thinkpad T61

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade my Processor and Video card of my Thinkpad T61.
It’s a 7665, It got now a Intel Centrino 2,0GHz processor and a nVidea nvs 140ms video card. I would like to have a min of 2,5GHz and a 256mb onboard 3D (preferred 512mb) or can't you remove the parts?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kyoshin

You can either upgrade your ram now or later it doesn't matter, but before you decide to jump on to the 64 bit bandwagon, please remember that some softwares don't have native 64 bit support in which case they won't work.
Also, if i am you then i would wait to next year to upgrade the OS, use the 32 bit Vista now, because Microsoft is abandonding their Vista OS (relatively speaking) and is going to release Windows 7 next year to lure people away from Win XP.  So don't waste any more money on Vista, and just wait for the new OS to come out.
But getting 2 x 2 gig of ram is not going to hurt you, because the price of PC 5300 SO DIMM ram has pretty much bottomed out, any price change is minor and mostly will be result of different currency exchange rate. In Australia Ram price actually went up due to Weak Australian Dollar against every major foreign currency.
