Upgrade tips please!

What should I buy to upgrade from the old 10.4.11 OS X?
I have G5 iMac and am not the most technically proficient person. Confused about the snow leopards, mountain lions and other cats - what on earth should I do! I'm hoping I can download something from the apple store but I don't know what my best option is.
Appreciate any help.
Thanks,
E

In no particular order...
OS X 10.5 is the last OS X release that will run on PowerPC / PPC / G5 hardware, and there is no support for the App Store and software downloads that far back.
The oldest OS X release that can download software from the App Store is 10.6.8.
To upgrade that 10.4 system to 10.5, you'd need to scrounge up a retail DVD and install that.    There's probably not really all that much point in expending the time and effort and money involved with this upgrade, either.   (If you're going to stay where you are, you might consider scrounging up another old G5 of the same model for spare parts, and plan to have to swap disks and related parts around as they fail.)
OS X 10.6 and all later releases require an Intel processor, and the current 10.9 release has some additional requirements.
Typical approach here would be the wholesale replacement of this PowerPC / PPC / G5 Mac.    With a newer or a new Mac.   A new Intel Mac will arrive with 10.9 or potentially the next "Yosemite" release, depending on exactly when you buy it and when Apple releases the "Yosemite" version.
Your existing PowerPC / PPC / G5 software can be emulated on 10.6, if you buy a (used) Intel Mac that is old enough to support that release.  That's not really a long-term solution, as 10.6 is itself very old.
You will require replacement application software for any newer Mac or new Mac system.   You'll need new application versions that are built for Intel on later releases.  Your existing PowerPC / PPC / G5 application software will not work past OS X 10.6.8.  How you migrate your data depends on the application, assuming there are new versions of all of your application packages.
Here is a list of the project names for the various OS X releases — the older releases were named after big cats, and 10.5 was Leopard.
Whatever you decide to do (or not do) here, always have backups of your Mac.
Probably best to visit the local Apple store or Apple reseller and have a detailed discussion with the folks there.

    If you have an Intel Mac and have recently upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion; here is a post I made in another similar thread:
    I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
    Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
    However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between Final Cut Pro or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the screen from your other Mac to view and work FCP in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCP (such as FCP X) and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:

    Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
    NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
    NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

    All day calendar events not being displayed in the notification centre for iphone 5 post ios 7 upgrade. Please help. Is it a bug?
    With iOS 6, the all day events showed up in the notification centre but it lacks in the upgrade iOS 7.

    Same problem here. Some people pointed out that all-day events do show up in their notification center, but that seems only to be the case for birthdays (and only as text like the weather). I've tried it myself on my iPhone and iPad and it did work for birthdays but not for any other all-day events. I already sent this to Apple as a product feedback as well, as should everyone of you. The more people mention it, the faster Apple's going to fix this issue. In its current state, notification center is not a very helpful feature in my opinion. There's absolutely no point in not showing all-day events in the 'today' calendar overview.
    Here's a link to the product feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
    I posted my message in the iPhone section since I couldn't find a page specifically dedicated to iOS 7.
    I really love the look & feel of iOS 7 but it's kinda sad to see notification center not tapping its full potential.
    Cheers!

    My iPhone 4 no longer appears in iTunes. But it does charge. Tried most tips please help someone!

    Hi there,
    No I didn't. Someone suggested in another thread that my iPod was registering as a disk instead of a device, so if I removed my iPod as a disk on Disk Utility then it would reload etc. and show up in iTunes. Which it didn't, and instead just cleared all my music (16,000 songs).
    So frustrating.
    Hope if you have the same problem you are able to find a better solution!

  • HT1751 I have moved my library from an external hard drive into my laptop music file but I am not able to open i-tunes when holding down the shift key as advised in step 4 and thus not seeing the library option box - any tips please??

    I have moved my itunes library from old computer to portable hard drive and then on, into new laptop, in music file. However I am then unable to open I-Tunes when holding down the shift button as directed in step 4 - this means I am not seeing the library choice box and cannot synch the tunes into ITunes library - any tips please?........Alan

    Close iTunes. Click the icon to launch iTunes and immediately press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. If iTunes opens normally, close it,  and try again.

    am using iphone 3g and it is having currently IOS 4.1 version,till what IOS version can i upgrade ? please help me many of my apps are not working esp whatsapp.

    iOS 4.2.1 is the latest version of iOS for the 3G.
    Facebook and Whatsapp both require 4.3 or higher.
    If you want to use those apps, either use the old version that should be in your iTunes library or upgrade the hardware to a 3GS or newer device.

    Thank you for the update Dlawrenceusa.  I would recommend reviewing the installation logs for the updates that are failing to apply to determine the exact cause of the failure.  You can find details on how to locate and interpret the installation log files at Creative Cloud Help / Troubleshoot install issues with log files | CC.  You are welcome to post any specific error messages you discover to this discussion.

    Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. If the problem isn't solved, ask for further instructions.
    1. Are the current date (including the year) and time shown on your system clock? If not, correct them and test.
    2. Disable any third-party firewall, "security" software, or network filter.
    3. In some versions of OS X, Parental Controls has a bug that prevents loading of secure websites. Turn it off.
    4. The process by which OS X checks the validity of root SSL certificates doesn't work behind the authenticating SOCKS proxies used on some enterprise networks. If applicable, contact your network administrator. The proxy server may need to have its settings changed.

    Cellular calling doesn't yet work reliably.
    Make sure you've followed the instructions in this support article. Note that both iCloud and FaceTime on the Mac must be signed in to the same Apple ID; those are two separate steps. Also note that the Mac and the phone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Ethernet won't work. Trying to pair the phone to the Mac as a Bluetooth device won't work either.
    If cellular calling still doesn't work, sign out of FaceTime and sign back in. You may have to do the same on the phone. The email address that you use as your Apple ID must be able to receive FaceTime calls.
