Upgrade to 10.6.6 ruins DVD drive - THANK YOU, APPLE!!!!!

Funny, since the upgrade from 10.6.5. to 10.6.6. I too have problems with a formerly more or less perfect system.
I cannot read or write CD-RWs anymore and I've just discovered a data DVD which the MacMini will not read.
This was NOT the case before the upgrade and it is not a problem with the CD's or DVD's as they can be read via an external (firewire) drive.
What the **** have you done, Apple, to screw up my computer hardware through a software update?! Huh!?!?!?! FIX IT!! Or tell me how I can get back to 10.6.5 and I swear I will never ever touch the "Software Update" button. I'm done with that. Jesus, maybe I should switch back to Windows.
(Really, I'm done with System upgrades. From now on, if the system runs well, no updates anymore. Not even if it's an "important security upgrade". Screw it. I'm speechless.

This is both a rant and a 4x duplicated post, both of which are a violation of the [terms of use of these forums|http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#terms]. It's very likely it will be removed.
If you read this before then, note that these two events (the update and the failure of your drive) are not related. This is not a known issue, and for that matter, only a firmware update can ruin hardware... a software update cannot ruin your hardware.
Calm yourself down, and once you can behave civilly again, call Apple for service on the drive.

  • Upgrading to Tiger using an external DVD Drive

    Our computers at work don't have internal DVD drives. When we try to install Tiger using an external DVD we can't get past the restart process. We insert the DVD into the external DVD drive and restart our computers. Once the computer restarts, we double-click the Tiger DVD and it once again tells us to restart. My questions is....Can you upgrade to Tiger using an external DVD drive or should I request the CDs from Apple for the upgrade?
    Thanks,
    Devra

    Hi Devra,
    first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
    Be aware that you CANNOT boot from an external USB-drive: Don't start up from an external USB device. You have to use an external firewire drive. Then insert the DVD and reboot while holding down the Option-key. Select the DVD in the external firewire drive as boot volume.
    You also might want to follow this procedure: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist . It also covers potential install errors due to outdated firewire-drive firmware.

  • What external dvd drive do you use?

    I didnt purchase the ultra base for the x201, i didnt feel like paying the high price tag on it.
    So which external dvd drive do you guys use and or recommend?
    As well, i apologize in advance if this post does not belong in X-series forum.

    Hello,
    From looking at the specifications, the Asus SBC-04D1S-U requires an Intel Pentium D 945 (3.4GHz) or faster desktop CPU.  I am not sure if the X201's CPU provides higher performance?  I am assuming it does, since that is an older CPU, but it would probably be a good idea to purchase the Blu-ray drive from a store that has a decent returns policy, in case there is a compatiblity issue.

  • Upgrade again.. but w/o DVD drive:-)

    Hi,
    +/* Sorry to bother the community with maybe same question: I see many regarding upgrades. Unfortunately I didn't find a solution for my particular situation, so here it goes again ...+
    1) I have a G5 with 10.3.9; need to upgrade to a higher v-n (unfortunately; the only reason is that Sibelius-5 doesn't work on Panther, what a shame);
    2) I got a black DVD with a silver X;
    3) but... I have no place to insert it:-)
    +(some recent problem with my SONY DVD RW DW-U21A: can now only read/write CDs but not DVDs. At least not double-sided ones for sure).+
    My question is basically:
    *- is it possible at all to install a new OS w/o buying a new optical drive?*
    // Even funnier: I looked at a nice external optical drive today - here in the apple store -- LaCie-smth... - nice indeed except it only works with v10.4.8 or >> .
    To complete the picture, I also have a laptop (more modern and with a good dvd drive that can read my DVD fine) and also a usb backup hard drive.
    ... So 1st tried a "simple" thing 1st: created a *dmg from the dvd, copied it to my ucb disk, copied it then to my desktop, but - that didn't work (says: restart? - sure, restart, after which it forgets the dmg mount(? or smth. else?; maybe an anti-piracy thing. Indeed that would be too easy otherwise:-))..
    In any case, I am hoping there's still a solution (keeping in mind I have two macs and a f/w cable -?).
    Or, if not, here goes my 2n q-n: is there an external optical drive that a) would work with 10.3 so I could install 10.4 and b) would still be worth it while with 10.4 / 10.5?
    Your help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks.

  • Upgrade to SL using an external DVD drive?

    Hi all:
    I've got an older mac mini (it's an intel machine), but the internal dvd drive has been broken for a long time. I've been using an external DVD drive when needed. I've been trying to upgrade to SL from 10.5.8, but it just won't work. It gets to the instal screen and then at "45 minutes remaining" it flashes to the end of the status bar and reboots my computer... where I am still on 10.5.8. I tried repairing permissions and all that good stuff, but no dice.
    Any help? Is the weak link my external DVD burner? Thanks!

    Yes, there is a reason. That's what I was trying to figure out. I don't think it would have to do with using an external DVD. Did you try starting up from the DVD. You might try that. If you want to erase and install, then you'll have to start up from the DVD. If you can, once the installation begins choose your language; open Disk Utility from the top of the next page; highlight your drive and choose Partition; assuming you want one partition select 1 (you must select a number here even if you don't want to change the number); and select GUID under the options (which also will format/erase your drive). Shut down Disk Utility and continue your installation.
    Next, if you have access to another properly equipped Mac (see link), then you may be able to install using [firewire target disk mode.|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661] Finally, [here is another interesting install possibility mentioned above.|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20051227162152292] You should be able create your image file like this:
    a. Insert the DVD/CD;
    b. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    c. from the Disk Utility File menu select New Disk Image from Disk 1;
    d. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image, click Save; and
    e. Upon completion, Get Info on the .cdr file and lock the file.

    Would like to get Messages on Macbook Pro OSX 10.7.5 so that I can sync with iMessages from my iPhone 3GS. Not sure if this is possible though. Or do you  have to have Mountain Lion to get Messages? It seems that I only have iChat on my Macbook.

  • "resource shortcuts are currently disabled" error message in citrix receiver after Mozilla upgrade- is there a fix for this? Thank you!

    As above, I have windows 8, a new computer and updated firefox to the most recent version with the new computer. I have tried the online fixes suggested including changing the plugin to 'always activate' and going into config:about and changing the plugins.load_appdir_plugins to true but neither of those have made a difference. I also just put citrix on 2 months ago, so believe this should be the latest version. Works fine on internet explorer. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • CD/DVD drive no longer reads music CD's after 10.5.6 upgrade

    After going through the 10.5.6 upgrade, the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E on my 2.16 Intel MacBook is no longer recognizing music CD's. Bought 3 new CD's just before upgrading and they aren't recognized now, as well as older CD's I own. DVD's and software CD/DVD's seem to work fine however.
    Any ideas on why and how to correct the issue? Is there a firmware update for the Matshita DVD drives used by Apple?
    Thanks in advance
    Joseph
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:
    Firmware Revision: ZB0E
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

    My G5 iMac was doing the same thing in the early months of 2008, and it wasn't till June that I discovered the drive itself was going bad. I could burn a disc, and when it finished, it wouldn't mount. I would reboot, and while the disc would then mount, the iMac said it was not the proper format. (Even though it was just burned on the Mac).
    A new drive eliminated this problem, so I would ask, how old is your computer?
    Mine was a little over two years old when it started this, and it took four months to completely die on me.

  • Upgrading to Leopard from external DVD drive

    I have a 1.25 GHz eMac currently running OS X 10.4.11. I'd like to upgrade it to Leopard, but I don't have a working internal drive. Can I do that from an external DVD drive?

    Yes you can, but it needs to be connected with FireWire. USB won't work because you will need to boot from the DVD, and eMacs cannot boot from USB devices.
    If you have another Mac with a DVD drive handy, you might be able to use it as a FireWire DVD drive by putting in the DVD, and booting it up into FW target mode by holding down T at boot time. Then hook it up to your eMac with FireWire, and see if your eMac can see and boot from the DVD.

  • DVD drive not working with win 8.1

    Hi. I have HP pavilion 15-e020TU notebook. My DVD drive worked with windows 7 and windows 8. After upgrading to windows 8.1 , the DVD drive is not working. Windows device manager can find the DVD drive but shows a yellow error mark. I selected "Update driver software" and then "Search automatically for updated driver software" . Then the name changed from "Mitsumi CD drive" to "hp DVD A DU8A5SH". And still not working. I installed the firmware update from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv481en&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jum... But a command prompt shows "Error: no mitsumi drives found." What can I do now ?

  • No DVD Drive Found on my G4

    Hi,
    I recently purchased a used G4 with OS 10.1.5. In order to upgrade to Tiger I need a DVD Driver. When I do a find no driver is found, I also tried inserting a DVD, Nada. How easy/difficult is to find a DVD Driver? Are they available for download? Also, is it the best idea to go from 10.1.5 to Tiger on a G$ or is it advisable to upgrade to Panther?
    Thanks a million,
    Michlin
    A new & confused Mac User.

    ...to upgrade to Tiger I need a DVD Driver.
    Not "Driver" but "drive". Apparently the optical drive in your G4 can not read DVDs. To use that Tiger DVD you will need an optical drive with DVD reading capabilities.
    OR you can trade in the Tiger DVD for CDs. Go to www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/ and look for the "Media Exchange Program" in the right column.

  • DVD drive turned on randomly with no disk

    At least I think that is what it was. I had no disk in the drive, and all of a sudden I heard a loud spinning sound which at first I thought wa sa fan going nuts. But then realized it sounded like the DVD drive.
    *It stopped after like ten seconds and has not persisted. Anyone have this issue or know if it is a bug of some kind???*
    I was using pages just writing a document when it happened.
    Thanks.
