Upgrade to 10.6 Concerns

I am about to upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6. I have a few concerns that I would like answered before proceeding:
- What affect will the upgrade have on my Time Machine archive ? Will I continue to be able to easily restore files from my current (10.5) archive ? Will a new archive need to be started once upgrade is complete ?
- I use the Apache, PhP, mysql and and such. Should I be concerned about loosing any configurations ? Is my 'websever' dir (inside "Library") safe ?
- I do some iPhone development on this machine as well. Should I have any concerns about the xcode, other sdk elements or the security identities (for provision files and such) ?
- Generally, what effect will the switch to 64bit have on my currently installed applications ? Can I expect the majority of them to continue working without issue ? (most specifically I am concerned about Adobe products like Dreamweaver and such)
I do realize these questions may seem a bit simple and unnecessary, but, I am just the kind of person that likes to be completely certain of the affects of something like an OS upgrade before I execute. That and I hate repeating configuration steps.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

What affect will the upgrade have on my Time Machine archive ? Will I continue to be able to easily restore files from my current (10.5) archive ? Will a new archive need to be started once upgrade is complete ?
As long as you have your 10.5 installer disc, and you don't delete the old archives of your 10.5 backups that you wish to keep, you'll be fine. Note Time Machine recursively deletes intermediate backups to allow space for newer backups once the archived backups fill up the hard drive. You can avoid this at anytime, by imaging the said backups to DVD or another non-Time Machine hard drive before allowing further backups to take place. You can manually turn off Time Machine's activity in the Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Time Machine.
I use the Apache, PhP, mysql and and such. Should I be concerned about loosing any configurations ? Is my 'websever' dir (inside "Library") safe ?
These applications may change their nature. That's a question you should pose to the various resources that allow you to use them. If you wish to assure your web server is safe, keep a clone of your 10.5 system handy in event some don't work.
I do some iPhone development on this machine as well. Should I have any concerns about the xcode, other sdk elements or the security identities (for provision files and such) ?

Generally, what effect will the switch to 64bit have on my currently installed applications ?
Universal applications which do not require system plugins, contextual menu items or drivers generally will be fine. Rosetta applications may in some cases break. See these guides on compatible applications and drivers:
http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
http://www.macintouch.com/specialreports/snowleopard/slcompat.html
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
You will have an option to run some applications in 32bit mode in the Finder's File menu -> Get Info that sometimes will improve compatibility.
64 bit mode is not available to all Intel Macs. These will work:

  • Upgrades vs. Virus Concerns

    I am a long time Mac user and the thoughts of virus are just starting to come into my thinking.
    I do the normal upgrades on a regular basis. For a while when I finish the upgrades I have another window "SuperDrive Update" pop-up that reads:
    FOUND KA16 update for HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N
    Your computer requires this update.
    Do not restart, shutdown, or unplug this computer while the update is in progress.
    After the update is complete, restart this computer.
    If you don't want to update now, you can update later.
    I have a rule that if I don't know, I don't click. I do not follow links in emails. I go to sites in question and follow links there. I admit laziness here but I am not sure where to go. So I am asking here. Do I do this update?

    This appears to be an actual Firmware Apple Update. Note this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3744
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't change the master page after upgrading to SharePoint 2013.

    After upgrading our farm to SharePoint 2013 we are having trouble changing the master page for sites that don't have sub-sites. We are still using the v4 UI version, and that appears to be what is causing the problem. The error we get when going to /_layouts/ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx
    is:
    System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.    at Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing.Internal.CodeBehind.AreaChromeSettingsPage.OnLoad(EventArgs e)     at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive()
    at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)
    I took a peek at the source code for AreaChromeSettingsPage.OnLoad and found that it references a CheckBox control that does not exist in the v4 ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx:
    protected override void OnLoad(EventArgs e)
    base.OnLoad(e);
    this.EnsureChildControls();
    if (!this.Page.IsPostBack)
    this.LoadValues();
    if (base.Web.Webs.Count == 0)
    this.resetSystemMasterPageSubSitesCheckBox.Visible = false;
    this.resetSubSitesCheckBox.Visible = false;
    this.resetAlternateCssSubSitesCheckBox.Visible = false;
    this.resetThemeSubSitesCheckBox.Visible = false;
    base.ConfigureCancelButton(this.BtnCancel);
    If I manually add a checkbox control with the ID "resetThemeSubSitesCheckBox" to a hidden panel in the v4 copy of ChangeSiteMasterPage.aspx the page works, but obviously this is not a best practice. How can we fix this without upgrading the UI version, which
    we are not yet ready to do?

    Thanks Mike - Could you please share what is your next step then? I also have custom master pages and layout but I am going to make new master page and layout in 2013 as we need to change the existing branding too. so, i upgrade the site collection. I understand
    the Look and Feel will not persist after the upgrade but I am concern that at least the page should show the content on the page after the upgrade. The page had Calendar webppart on it but after the upgrade it is coming blank.
    any suggestion?

  • Which upgrade for Late 2009 Mac Pro Currently Running 10.6.8?

    I am in a qaundry not knowing the best way to upgrade my machine. I would like to install Adobe Lightroom 5 but can not do it from Snow Leopard. I haven't upgraded because I was concerned about creating a nightmare of problems for myself. I use this computer mainly for photography and some household bookkeeping/record keeping, etc. I keep my photos and Lightroom catalog on an external drive which is also backed up. There is a separate drive in the Mac for Time Machine. I haven't upgraded because I was concerned about creating problems for myself and because I live in a rural area there is little access to help so I'm pretty much on my own solving any problems. A lot of this stuff is a bit over my head so please go easy on me :-) Thanks, Roberta

    I don't have a clue about PPC programs? I tried to google the term and it says something about pay per click??? No idea so perhaps they don't exist for me.
    People seem to be having problems with Mavericks from what I am reading here. I really don't want to do something that will make me wish I had opted for a root canal rather than upgrading my machine. I have Carbon Copy Cloner doing a backup clone weekly to an external drive and use Chronosync for backing up my photo files and other records, again to an external drive. I can only assume my present system is healthy - haven't had problems. I am not a sophisticated user just trying my best but as I said initially some of this stuff is over my head.  Would I perhaps be better off opting for something like Mountain Lion first?

  • BW 3.5 Upgrade approx 20Days to do?

    I would like some input into estimates of effort to upgrade our 3.1 to 3.5.
    I have been following some threads and it seems that the upgrade,if you follow the SAP instructions and are well prepared, seems straight forward.
    I have reviewed the 'How to.....SAP BW 3.5..." document.
    It seems quite explicit in its steps and information.
    Are there any other major steps  that I am missing. If its approx 20 days to do then that is what it is, I am just a bit perplexed. We want to move on with the upgrade and its the scheduling of the upgrade window is my concern if it is the above amount of time. We may well have to put-off for 6 months.
    We only have one application running in SEM - BPS.

    Frank,
    The document would give you an idea as to what all needs to be done. But you also need to look ata
    1. Volume of data / number of cubes / ODS to be migrated into 3.5
    2. You will also have to do the same to your DEV , QAS and PRD systems in order to continue from this point onwards with BW 3.5
    3. You should also look at testing the entire setup post upgradation. Please ask your application consultant if they have budgeted for this and have made a correct estimate of the volumes and different systems.
    I am not saying that 20 days is too short but I think testing has been left out and validation.
    You would have to find out all reports / Graphs etc etc and then look at migration and then also look at any new expectations - since there might be enhancements with the feeling that - ' Anyway we are upgrading - let us get these reports also done in the process' This thought will increase the scope and increase the timelines.

  • CSS Code upgrade.

    Hi,
    We are upgrading a code on CSS 11503,
    Current version is sg0740306s
    We are upgrading to sg0810503.adi-gz
    I went through the prcedure which is very clear, I am planning to upgrade it manually, my concern is on creating the ftp-record, I downloaded filezilla and started ftp, my questions are on how to proceed from here,
    1) CSS management ip is 1.1.1.1 so what should be my pc ip?, I assigned 1.1.1.5 to my pc and I can ping the device from the CSS
    2) what type of cable do I need to use?
    3) I tried to open ftp in its default mode like when it starts up it will have a loop back address and 14147, when I click ok it will start and says logged on but in CSS when I create ftp-record with the ip,name and password and try to access ftp it never does
    FileZilla Server version 0.9.31 beta
    Copyright 2001-2009 by Tim Kosse ([email protected])
    Connecting to server...
    Connected, waiting for authentication
    Logged on
    On CSS side if I try to download the software from server it says
    "unable to connect to the server"
    Could you please let me know where I am going wrong??
    Thanks in Advance.
    Josh.

    Hi Josh,
    1. The IP address can be anything reachable by the CSS.
    2. Don't understand this.
    The loopback address and port 14147 are for administration. Check that you are actually running an FTP server by using the "netstat -a" command. Look for ports 20 and 21.
    If FTP is running, do you have a firewall/ACL that is blocking inbound connections?
    Check that your FTP record is pointing at the real address of the FTP server.
    ftp-record DEFAULT_FTP 1.1.1.5 wibble ...
    and that you have valid credentials on your FTP server (logonid/password).
    If that is working, try copying the running configuration to check that FTP is working as required before you kick off an upgrade:
    copy running-config ftp DEFAULT_FTP wibble.txt

  • ACE: Upgrade from A2(1.4a) to A2(3.0)

    Hi,
    I'm planning on upgrading my ACE-modules, currently running A2(1.4a) to A2(3.0), as I need to test the 'persistence rebalance strict' feature. So far, I haven't found anything in the releasenotes that would advise against this upgrade.
    My main concern is that v3.0 is still relatively new (released 12/2009 if I remember correctly), so I'm trying to learn, if anyone has already gone through the upgrade from A2(1.x) to A2(3.0) and have had the chance to test it. Unfortunately, I only have one set of modules running both my test and production enviroment, so my testoptions are quite limited. Still, A2(3.0) might solve a couple of ongoing issues, I've struggled with for quite some time now.
    Any info will do.
    Thanx
    /Ulrich

    Persistence rebalance strict was introduced in A2(2.1) ,
    You can upgrade to A2(2.3) which has more bug fixes than A2(3.0). It wil
    l take a while for A2(3.x) train to catch up with bug fixes. (like IOS T train versus IOS mainl

  • Web Premium Upgrade CS4 to CS5 - no need to re-install Acrobat Pro?

    Just received Web Premium Upgrade package today. Currently have CS3 Web Standard. and CS4 Web Premium installed so will be removing CS3 Standard before attempting CS5 upgrade. My question concerns Acrobat Pro 9, perhaps obviously given the forum I'm posting in! :-) Would I be correct in assuming that given I have an up-to-date version of Acrobat Pro 9 installed as part of CS4 I can ignore the CS5 Acrobat installation? That's based on an associated assumption that the upgrade package is intended to also cover upgrades from CS4 Standard and other suites that did not include Acrobat Pro.

    Apologies; answered my own question! From the CS5 installation instructions (online, not provided with installation package) "If you already have Acrobat 9 Pro installed, either as part of a suite or as a standalone application, you do not need to reinstall it." • Upgrade Panther to Tiger

    Dear all
    We are currently running 10.3.9 and need to update some software. Therefore we need to upgrade the OS system.
    I am concerned upgrading from Panther to Leopard will cause problems and would rather update to Tiger.
    Could anyone advise me on the process and if my concerns are valid.
    Would anyone suggest differently and think Panther is the best option.
    Any links to further information or advice would be really useful.
    Many thanks in advance.

    sarah:
    Your iMac G5 will easily meet both the minimum system requirements for Tiger and the technical specifications for Leopard. So you can go either way. Your computer will support up to 2 GB - 184-pin PC-3200 (400MHz) DDR SDRAM, but your 1 GB will work well for you, unless you decide to upgrade.
    The main concern at this point would be whether you have third party applications that may not be supported by Leopard. In terms of which way to go, costwise the installation software for either OS will cost about the same, so, if everything else seems in order, you may be ahead going for Leopard.
    Please do post back with further questions, or any specific concerns you may have.
    Good luck.

  • Do i have to disconnect my time machine backup drive before I upgrade to Yosemite from mavericks

    I am considering upgrading from mavericks to yosemite. Do I need to disconnect my time machine external backup disc drive before I upgrade.

    Thanks,
    I was concerned that if the upgrade went wrong for any reason, it may corrupt the back up drive as well as the hard drive and I would somehow loose the ability to recover my files.

  • Upgrading to ios5 will delete media!?!

    I have an iPhone 4 and so does my girlfriend.  I have a Macbook Pro and she has a Macbook.  I always connect my iphone to my macbook pro and it regulalry backs up my iphone and syncs.  So I upgraded to ios 5 yesterday.  There were some error messages but eventually I got upgraded.  I then connected my girlfriend's iphone to her macbook and when I went to click upgrade, it popped up with a message that said if I upgrade to ios 5 on this device that all media and itunes purchases will be deleted and that I should connect the iphone to a computer that I regularly sync with.  Huh?  My girlfriend would only connect her iphone to her macbook.  I didn't perform the upgrade because I was concerned that her camera roll/photos and itunes purchases made on her iphone would be deleted.  I did do a backup and sync.  Is that enough?  If I do the upgrade would I be able to restore from a backup?  She will kill me if I lose her data on her iphone.

    The update to iOS 5.0 or higher ia an erase/restore deal. So, follow the directions here:

  • 7200 rpm HD Upgrade - a good idea?

    I'm thinking of replacing the hard drive on my Mac Mini (1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo) with a 7200 rpm drive. I know many people have been successful with this upgrade, but I'm concerned about heat & noise issues - has anyone had any bad experiences with a 7200 rpm HD in a Mac Mini? Are there drives that anyone can recommend (or avoid?)
    This is the HD I'm considering (suitable or not?) :
    Seagate Momentus 7200.4 SATA 3Gb/s 320-GB Hard Drive
    http://www.microanvika.com/product.asp?PNO=SEA53295A&PNAME=Momentus-HD-320GB-720 0rpm-SATA-2.5
    Many thanks.

    I described my experience doing a similar upgrade in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2218493&tstart=0
    I would agree with Ian that many people will find this upgrade difficult or tricky to do, while others will not.
    I don't think that heat is an issue, however. Nor was noise an issue with the drive I used.
    The larger, faster drive with plenty of free space on it definitely speeds up this Mini, as long as you also have max'ed the RAM to 2 Gig, which can be fairly easily done when you have disassembled the Mini to upgrade the hard drive.
    If you don't want to perform surgery on the Mini, using a full-size firewire external drive as your startup drive can also provide substantial speed benefits. You can clone your internal to the external using the free feature of SuperDuper! .
    If your Mini has only 512 Meg of RAM, you will be speed-limited by that, regardless of what you do with your hard drives. Even a 1-Gig Mini will gain some speed by being max'ed to 2 Gig of RAM.

  • Will I lose Applications if I upgrade?

    I am currently running 10.4.11. I haven't upgraded because I'm concerned that some of the programs that I've been using won't run on 10.5 or 10.6. Is this true? One program that I use all the time is Microsoft Office. I don't think I'm running Office 08 v.X. I think I'm using Office 04.X. If I upgrade to 10.6, will Office still work?

    Have a look here for compatible apps...

  • New message: BT Vision is Changing

    I received a message sent to my BTV box and it says BT are moving me to a new look BT Vision platform in 30 days.
    At the moment, I'm not on Infinity, nor do I have any wish to upgrade, though I am concerned I may lose my ESPN channel, which I've had for years.
    I'd really appreciate it if you guys can clarify what changes I'll see after the new look platform has updated.
    Many thanks
    Neil

    Just to make it clear, when I said it won't affect your "services" I meant the key things you are signed up to. So if you are on ADSL broadband and subscribe to ESPN via Freeview then those things should stay exactly the same after the upgrade. Like PP I'm on the Total Sports Max ADSL package and have been upgraded to the New Look software. Nothing has changed regarding my contract and the main services I subscribe to.
    The lack of some functionality after the upgrade and the general usability and reliability of the New Look software is a whole different matter. Just read through the numerous threads on this forum discussing issues.
    As well as the lack of surround sound support one other key difference is the lack of any teletext and red button support. My box version has also lost the 1080 HD option. Anyway, you can judge for yourself after the upgrade.

    Safari problem:  when I switch back into safari from another application, the menu bar comes up but no tabs or windows.  What's going on?  Just started yesterday.  I have found a workaround: when I Command Tab back to safari, I hit command T to open a new tab and Command W to close it, and my other tabs are visible.
    I have tried shutting down, closing tabs, with no success.  What's going on and how can I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Cindi B
    PS:  I'm not sure of the actual OS level, but I have not allowed it to upgrade to Maverick yet; concerned about it because of a few things I've read...

    A Safari extension or third party plugin may be causing the menu bar issue.
    From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
    If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
    Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
    If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
    As for which OS X is installed.
    Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.
    v10.6 Snow Leopard v10.7 Lion  v10.8 Mountain Lion
    It's your choice whether or not to upgrade to Mavericks. If you decide to do this, make sure your Mac meets the requirements noted here.
