Upgrade to 10.8 broke all (?) aliases
Yesterday, I upgraded from 10.7.5 to 10.8.3 via App Store. As I've gingerly returned to work post-upgrade, everything seems OK so far, except: Most (all?) of my existing aliases are broken. Never had any particular problem with aliases before. Now, when I click on an alias, I get the standard error message ;ole this:
The alias “foo” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.
All the aliases I've checked so far are broken. I can't think of anything that would explain this. It isn't an earth-shattering problem, but definitely a pain, as I depend quite a bit on aliases to access folders and files.
Test 1: I examined a broken, recently-made alias to a folder by doing File --> Get Info on it. Nothing seems amiss. I copied the path of the original from the Get Info box and placed it in quotes after "cd " on a Terminal command line, schematically:
cd "/work/Project 5/Subproject C/Yellow/Working Files/"
Since the alias fails, I expected this command to fail, but it doesn't. It puts me right where I expected to be, as I defined the alias. So the problem isn't the path, exactly.
Test 2: I tried clicking on a much older alias. (Yeah, it is superstitious of me to assume the age of the alias might make a difference -- but what else do I have?) According to its Get Info, I created it in 2010, and modified it last November.
It failed, too, but before I got the usual "... because the original item can't be found ..." error message I got this alert:
There was a problem connecting to the server "sam.local"
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.
Check the server name or IP address, check your network
connection, and then try again.
where "Sam" is my computer name. After I respond OK to this, I get the usual "... because the original item can't be found ..." This sequence is repeatable. HUH? Wait, isn't "myhost.local" always available? I'm having no trouble at all with network operations. No problem accessing email, the web, and a LAN-connected printer. OK, maybe this error message is a red-herring, an artifact.
Returning to the fundamental issue: I looked again, more closely, at the Get Info for this older alias. Wait, the original path shown seems to date back to 2010. I modified the name of the target folder about 6 months ago. That explains the sumptom, but not why this alias worked yesterday and fails today.
Yeah, there seems to be an inconsistency between Test 1 and Test 2 as described above. By my observations: When following an alias, and when displaying Get Info for an alias, Finder gets confused. Is it possible that the mechanism for tracking aliases was completely changed in 10.8, and that the new accounting was not properly updated in my case?
Easy enough to fix each particular case with "Select new Original..." in the Get Info dialog, or "Fix alias" in the standard broken alias dialog. But ... But...
Better ideas? How about an overall fix?

More experience with this issue:
When I find a broken alias -- one apparently broken by updating to 10.8.3-- I open the info box (Finder -> File -> Get Info) for the alias and carefully observe (text copy and/or screenshot) the path to the original file.
Then I accept the invitation in the info box, "Select New Original...", navigate to the original file, and choose ("open") it.
The info box stays open. Here is what I see: No change in the path. As far as the UI is concerned I have not changed anything. But... now the alias works.
Could this be due to insertion of faulty data, e.g. unprintable characters? Or, as I interpret the Wikipedia article on Mac aliases, linkages from alias to the original are made based on more than the path, also the file ID. Updating the OS should not damage any of this data, and yet it seems clear something has gone wrong. In at least some cases. I find I currently have almost 700 aliases defined. A quick spot-check seems to indicate mostly recent ones got clobbered.
Any ideas?

Everything on my permissions even on the pages of the media I cant play is set to : Use Default.
Now, I thought this was just some kind plug-in problem, I even thought it was just something with the updated made Firefox incompatible with some of the webplayers. Of course I found out this was wrong. Keep on reading:

Now, all these videos I listed before, If I had them all open in tabs and then proceeded to terminate my flash plugin in Task Manager, they would all be replaced by that grey message window that the plugin crashed.

they wont even be affected by it. Its like they arent even using the flash plugin.
Whenever I would terminate/end process my plugin from my task manager in 34.0 EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING would not work including every vine video and instgram video, it would either show that grey message that says the plugin crashed or it would not work. They would all work again when I refreshed the page. Everything, in 34.0 in my firefox was using the flash plugin.
Now, as I stated above I thought it was just some kind of webplayer and firefox 35.0 conflict that was causing these problems.

IS because of their file extension, their file types.

In Conclusion, what gives??
-In 34.0 Everything worked.
-If I terminated/ended process the Flash plugin in 34.0 everything would be affected by it , either by not working anymore or showing me that grey crash message.
-This all started when I upgraded to 35.0
-Has nothing to do with webplayer conflicting with 35.0 as proven above.
-The reason for all of this not working is the type of video extension they have. Judging from the examples I gave of the things I cant play, it would seem I cant play mp4, flv and whatever vine uses. Which I think its mp4 as well.
Anyways, how do I fix all this so it works like it did before I upgraded to 35.0I looked at that but it only shows for Windows 8.1 , 8.0 , 7 , i have Vista , 64 bit Ultimate , would the Windows 7 one work ?? , or am i out of luck ?
And what plug-in icon in the address bar ?? , i don't see anything that pertains to any plug-ins

My MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) is too slow after installing Yosemite version 10.10.1. All programs take for ever to load especially Safari and even chrome. I regret upgrading to yosemite, it was all fine with Maverick. Any suggestions ? ThankYou
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is backing up data from the iPhone before installing the new operating system. I have done everything suggested in Apple support with no success. I still get the error everytime (about 5 minutes into backing up iPhone data). How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my iPhone (the error message says that if I continue I will lose all data on the phone)? If I have already synced the phone before upgrading the OS, would I be able to restore my data after installing the new OS by syncing after the OS upgrade is complete? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first. -
I have upgrade to IOS 8 and all Fotos are ereased on my Iphone and on my Computer is only the last Backup and there a no Photos now what can i do?
You really need to try this on a computer, not on the iPad.
Seeing how what is in the cloud is also on the iPad, if the content is not on the iPad, there is a good chance that the content is lost. But you can try logging into www.icloud.com in a web browser on a computer and log into your account and see if you can get into the Pages app. You may have to sign up for iCloud drive if you didn't do so already. Make SURE you that you read the blurb that will pop up in that window in iCloud for more information. -
Upgrading to V4 has lost all of my Bookmarks, I still have the restore files in my profile data but they will not load, I have tried importing the html backup file too but it didn't work either. How can I get them back?

Thank you for your response, I went throught each and every step without any luck, even got the recovery programme, and painstakingly tried to sift through all that mumbojumbo to find what i needed. finally found the bookmark bit, but it had been fully overwritten :(, so on reading about previous ff versions, found the sqlite thingys, and they were relatively unscathed(partly written over, but saveable apparently TG), saved them to adiff drive, amongst other possibly good folders. Then looked up how to install them, and it said to close FF, and install to profile folder.
So i tried to close FF, and the original problem from a few days ago, where it asked me if 'i was sure i wanted to close this window as it has X tabs open', popped up again. This is where 'open blank page' selection was set, over 'open previous tabs'. Wanting to save that info on how to sort out these friggin files, I reset the Option to 'open previous tabs', and closed FF. After unsucessfully searching for the profile folder on my laptop, i opened FF intending to search online for where i could find said folder.
AND BANG, surprise surprise, the FF I had just closed with only tabs open about finding out what the heck to do, had disappeared, and instead my original saved tabs were up, and my bookmarks are there..... I am gobsmacked! what the heck just happened there???
I have made 3 back up in different folders now, of those friggin bookmarks. I am weary now tho of shutting it all down.... what if its back to the other pages I had with no bookmarks, tomorrow :( -
Upgrade 8.1.1 wiped all my music. Is it a bug?
After upgrade to 8.1.1 all my music was gone. I tunes could not find it. I managed to get it back thanks to a safety copy on external disc.
Does anybody know if this is a bug and if it has been reported? Are there any actions taken from Apple?
I find this bug very alarming especially for those who don´t have back ups of their music.
maybe it is time for Apple to get back to programming and scrap 8.1.1 until a safer version is launched.Ditto! I did multiple searches, different methods, and bottom line is the actual music (purchased and ripped from personal CDs)/podcast files don't reside on my computer anymore. Big bummer as I am one of the dummies who wasn't backed up. Quite sad. Before I try and reinstall 8.1.1 and reaquire my "material", it sure would be nice for Apple to tell us what's going on and a suggestion of an alternative cousrse of action. "HELP us Apple!"

Make sure that you choose Mail>View>Show Mailbox List, then hover your cursor over one of the subordinate mailbox categories, and you should see "Show." Next click on "Show." -

My Macbook is running on OS 10.5.8. However, I forgot my admin password. I would like to find out if I can use OS 10.6 CD to reset the admin password while upgrading OS? Also, will all my files be still present after upgrade??
1. Should be possible to do that; go to the Utilities menu and select 'reset password' before starting the installer. (while booted from the DVD of course)
2. Standard installation of SL only replaces system components; applications, user data and preference settings should not be affected.
3. But you do have a backup just in case, don't you? -

After installing version 5 upgrade to my Iphone 4 all the apps stopped working.
After installing version 5 upgrade to my Iphone 4 all the apps stopped working and I cannot reinstall them at the Appstore giving me a message that I have already purchased them. I can see all the apps, click on them, but none of them will open. How can I make them work again, since the Appstore will not allow me to reinstall the apps? The only apps that are working are the ones pre-installed by the upgrade.

Try downloading any free app using the App Store on the phone. -
