Upgrade to 2.5gb - Performance Benifits

I was wondering if anyone who has upgraded their Second Generation iMac G5 with a 2gb ram stick could tell me what kind of performance benifits they saw. Is it worth the investment? I use Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, After Effects, and other pretty heavy duty software on a regular basis, so I'm assuming it will help.

If you use those apps regularly and you have the stock 512MB, you will see a big boot in performance. I have 2GB on mine and while I am not a pro, I dabble with those apps and they run very nicely with the 2GB, but there are still pageouts indicating that they would want even more RAM if that was possible.

Do I turn in the new laptop for a pre-Lion rebuild to keep Snow Leopard, or do I return new computer and get upgraded memory to improve performance of existing MacBookPro?  I'm mostly still happy with existing MacBookPro, but Aperture doesn't work, the computer can't handle it.
Other possibility is setting up virtual machine with Snow Leopard server software on new computer.
Any opinions on what would allow moving forward with the least hassle and best workflow continuity?

  • Can I upgrade Zen Micro 5GB to anything say 20

Is there any sort of case that I can purchase to use the old dri've as back-up mobile storage

Upgrading the older players was easier, particularly those that use the 2.5" dri'ves because (a) 2.5" dri'ves tend to come in only a few different sizes (b) they're relati'vely cheap (c) you can get a pretty significant upgrade to say 00-20Gb.
With the newer players it's not so straightforward. Dri've form factors can vary slightly causing the dri've not to fit, the smaller dri'ves are much more expensi've particularly in larger sizes, and you don't get significant changes in size.
This tends to mean it's uneconomic to try upgrading the newer players.

    For the Micro's microdri've, I'm not sure.

I'm losing track of the various issues with the players, but have a look at the buglist linked from my signature.

I have a G4 Dual 450 AGP with 1.5Gb of RAM. I am working on a large catalog. I use InDesign and Photshop a lot. Will I even notice the extra 512 Mb enough to justify the purchase? Thanks.

    Hi
You could try using the Activity Monitor application located in the Applications\Utilities folder to monitor your existing memory usage whilst you perform your work. The following article explains how to interpret the information shown:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107918
As already mentioned a processor upgrade may be more beneficial. IMHO you get the most bang for the buck with a mid range processor upgrade, perhaps a single 1.4 - 1.5GHz 7455 based one, e.g.

  • Upgrade 9i to 10g Performance Issue

    Hi All,
DBA team recently upgraded the database from 9i to 10g (Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.2.0 - 64bi).
There is a process as follows
Mainframe --> Flat file --> (Informatica) --> Oracle DB --> (processing through SPs) --> Report
The whole process normally used to take 1.5 - 2 hrs which is now taking 4-5 hrs after 9i to 10g upgrade.
I tried searching on Google but could not find any detailed procedure to root out the cause. Below is the link of such an instance-
    http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/2007/02/02/10g-upgrade/
Can someone suggest where to start digging to find out the reason behind the slowdown (if possible, please tell the detailed procedure or reference)?
It is to be noted that there was no other change besides Database upgrade. Also, for about 20 days after the upgrade the whole process took near 1 hr (which was a pleasnt gain) but afterward it shoot up to 4-5 hrs suddenly and since then its taking same time.
    Thanks.

Without more information (Statspack reports, AWR reports, or at least query plans), it's going to be exceptionally hard to help you.
There are dozens, more likely hundreds, of parameters which change between 9i and 10g. And one of which could cause an individual query to perform worse. Plus, obviously something changed after the process was running quickly for 20 days, so there is some change on your side that would need to be identified and accounted for. There is no way for anyone to guess which of the hundreds of parameter and behavioral changes might have contributed to the problem, nor for us to guess what might have changed after 20 days in your database.
If you can at least provide Statspace/ AWR reports, we may be able to help you out with a general tuning exercise. If you can identify what changed between the time the process was running well to the time it stopped running well, we may be able to help there as well.

Working in After Effects efficiently and enjoying it is not just dependent on the rendering speed of your computer. Enjoying working in After Effects is planning your work to get the most out of your existing system's abilities without too much frustration. Work at resolutions, in color spaces and frame rates adequate to the task of editing and creating. After your designs and rough cuts are approved, you advance to working in the release medium.
In a commercial setting,  if you have the machines and IT support to keep it running, the work of full rez output can be offloaded to a render farm. At home, you learn to use what you have until you can figure out a way to pay for new hardware. However, in the many years I have been using After Effects, advances in hardware do not necessarily mean improvements in rendering speeds. My huge new Macintosh only gives me a slight improvement in rendering. The vast oceans of RAM and fast SSD will allow creative experimentation, once I figure it all out and relearn my long-established workflows, but it's going to take Adobe some time to figure out how to take advantage of PC and Mac hardare advances.

  • Upgrading for better gaming performance.

    Hey everyone,
I recently received this latop for Christmas. I really enjoy all around gaming from PC to Console. The problem that I am having is mostly on WoW. I ran the system via systemrequirementslab.com (the can you run this section) and it told me that I had the minimum requirements capable of running. For a few days it worked phenomenally but most recently the game slows to a crawl to the point that it takes 15+ minutes before I get two minutes of movement. Is there anything I can do to upgrade my laptop and run videogames better?

  • Will Memory upgrade make difference in performance of Toshiba NB notebook?

WILL IT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE TO PERFORMANCE IF I UPGRADE NY NOTEBOOK FROM 1GB TO 2 GB?

If you have XP and an efficient Virus Scanner (I recommend Avira), 1GB should be fine for light usage (internet, email etc..). 2GB will help if you have many apps open at once.
If you have Win7, 2GB is highly recommended. I doubt one 4GB Module will work on an Atom CPU, check compatibility first. Remember there is only one RAM Slot in the NB series.

  • Severe Samba performance decrease after u6 - u7 upgrade

I just upgraded my Solaris 10 x86 system from u6 (kernel 138889-08) to u7 using LiveUpgrade. I have samba sharing some ZFS filesystems, and the first thing I noticed after the upgrade was a severe performance decrease in reading files via smb.
For example, using smbget from a MacOS client to retrieve a particular test file, pre-upgrade I was getting about 30Mb/sec, but after the upgrade to u7 I'm only getting 100Kb/sec. If I boot back to my alternate boot environment that still has u6, performance returns to normal. This happened when u7 was first released, so I just ignored it and went back to u6, and now I tried u7 again yesterday and applied all of the current security and most recommended patches (including the latest samba patch) and am still experiencing the same behavior.
I don't currently have any socket options or other performance tuning in my smb.conf, it is about as simple as possible with just a couple share definitions.
Any ideas why the upgrade would cause such problems for samba? The only troubleshooting I can think to check is that the network card (e1000g) isn't getting errors all of a sudden after the upgrade, but netstat -i shows everything is working as expected; 0 errors/collisions/etc.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

  • 3.x query performance on upgraded BI 7.0 - worse than before upgrade?

    Dear Sirs,
upgraded a BI system this weekend from 3.x to 7.0. Purely technical upgrade so no upgrade to 7.0 queries yet.
What we have seen is that queries with "loose"/lagre selection ? (e.g all plant .. all months) etc have worse performance than before upgrade.
One example: a query went from 26second to 60 seconds to run.
Small selection (e.g one specific plant and date) is same run time.
    Has anyone had similar experience?
Is BI 7.0 optimized for 7.0 queries, or are there any performance parameteres I could look at.

  • 11.2.0.0 upgrade- performance issue when commits

We have upgraded our data warehouse system from 10.2.0.4 for 11.2.0.2. After upgrade ETL system has performance issue. Extraction is fine because we compared the explain plans before and after upgrade. However, loading is taking very long. In loading there is a commit after every 1000 records, that why its slow. Even when we import data with commit=y option its very slow. Is there any know issue on this?
    Any help pl?
    Thanks

We are solaris 10. ETL job on 10.2.0.3 was taking 2 hours and now its taking 11 hours.
I beleive commit is a issue because
    1. Source query (Extraction) has same explain plan.
    2. Source database is still on 10.2.0.3
    3. Servers and network is same for 10g and 11g.
    4. I already experienced COMMIT=y performance issue in import.

  • Do I need a RAM upgrade

    Hi- I've got a PB 1.67GHZ (aluminum) with 1GB RAM (2 512MB chips).
I tend to leave lots of apps open (around 10) for my workflow. I'm always having to jump between apps. None of them are particularly taxing though I do play one game that takes over the system (so I shut down other apps for that). My system definitely gets slower with lots of apps open.
Currently, my Activity Monitor shows page in/out as 307943/213848. I'm thinking that second number is not good and I ought to get some more RAM.
In addition to recommending a RAM upgrade, should I go for just an upgrade to 1.5GB or go for 2GB?

Currently, my Activity Monitor shows page in/out as
307943/213848. I'm thinking that second number is
not good and I ought to get some more RAM.
Your system is memory deprived. The general guideline is that page outs should be 10% or less of page ins. Yours are currently about 69%, meaning for every 10 page ins, your system is paging out roughly 7 pages. A page out is where the system has to move something out of memory to disk to make room for something else, and that impacts performance.
You can upgrade to 1.5gb by installing a 1gb RAM strip, and monitor your page ins/outs and performance/feel. For what you run, that may do it for you. However, if you don't see much improvement, then going to 2gb is available to you.
Recommend Crucial, Kingston (not their valueram line), or Samsung memory, which has proven reliable in our PB's. Crucial can be found at their website http://www.crucial.com , Kingston at http://www.kingston.com , and Samsung is available from a number of companies, of which OWC at http://www.macsales.com is one source.

  • Improving G5 performance

    Hello,
I've got a G5 dual-core 2.0Ghz (PCI-e model) and I'd like to boost its performance. I'm considering two options, but can only afford one. I'd like some help deciding which would have the greatest effect for my needs.
Option 1: upgrade from 2.5GB to 4.5GB of RAM
Option 2: upgrade from 6600 to x1900 graphics card
I'm a fine art photographer, and I use Aperture and Photoshop daily. I do most of my editing in Photoshop, and basically use Aperture as an image management system. If I had to choose between improving Aperture performance, or improving Photoshop, I'd probably choose Photoshop. (Of course I'd prefer both!)
I understand that the x1900 will improve Aperture a lot, but will it affect Photoshop at all? Will it have any effect on the general GUI "responsiveness" and applications like Safari, iCal, etc.?
I'm guessing the 2 more gigs of RAM will help Photoshop, but how much? Will it be significantly noticeable? Will more RAM help Aperture noticeably?
Thanks for your help understanding the finer points of this.
    Best,
    Chris

Thank you for your very thorough reply. I have a couple of questions comments (below).
Option 1: upgrade from 2.5GB to 4.5GB of RAM
I did go ahead and upgrade to 4.5GB of RAM. So far, any performance improvements that might have happened are barely noticeable. Actually, the app I notice the most change in is Aperture, which is nice.
The more you fill a boot drive (or any drive) over
50% the slower it will perform, since your are
caching/swapping memory to the boot drive constantly
due to insufficient RAM, this makes everything slow.
I'm using a "sandbox" set-up with a backup/cloning program called SuperDuper. I have a 74GB Raptor set as the sandbox, which means it has a copy of the applications and system installed on it but nothing else. Of 70GB available, 15GB are used - leaving roughly 80% of free space.
The internal HD (400GB, 7200 RPM) has my system and user files on it. That drive has 150GB used, so about 60% remains. It would seem disk space is not the problem, right?
You probably know how a sandbox works, but for those who don't... it enables me to install updates to the system and apps and test them for a while. If there aren't any problems, I use SuperDuper to "smart update" the HD with new changes. If there are problems, I simply boot back to the HD and then roll back the sandbox to the state it was in prior to the updates.
Finally, I back up that internal 400GB HD to an external 400GB FW drive.
I don't know what effect, if any, the sandbox configuration has on speed.
If you go through the steps of a backup/c boot from
the Tiger installer/disk utility erase with
zero/fresh install of Tiger/update/install apps and
update and all that for the boot drive, your machine
will perform better as well as this will optimize the
drive as well as eliminate any glitches that have
occurred which may be affecting your performance in
    other programs.
I understand everything you've said here, except for "backup/c boot". What is that?
If you just run one major heavy duty program at a
time, it will have all the RAM for itself, instead of
sharing it. Supposedly 3.5 GB is what Photoshop CS2
could optimally use, then you need a 1GB for Mac OS
    X. If you have Dashboard widgets up the kazoo that
    eats memory. (reboot to clear)
I have five widgets active, and maybe 20 in the toolbar (do those use memory too?)
Use X-Bench to test your boot drive speed. Your
looking for the fastest 4k uncached write speed as
    you can get.
I've never done this. Is it self-explanatory if I download x-bench?
Are you saying you have a RAID 0 with two 10,000 RPM drives? (Sorry, I know very little about storage tech). If so, with only two internal drives on the G5, where do your files go?
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard gone awry

Hello, I have a late 2007 MBP and decided to upgrade from Leopard 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard 10.6.8. After reading forum posts and articles I decided to attempt a clean install as opposed to just an upgrade to gain some performance on this old mac until I can afford to replace it.  Here's the history of what I did and where I'm at now.  Any help would be appreciated as I can't find any forum posts that address this problem directly.
12/26: Created time machine backup on external backup (mirrored raid via FW800 if it makes a difference) while still on Leopard to prepare for clean install of Snow Leopard.
12/28: Did clean install to upgrade to Snow Leopard (booted from disk, erased hd and installed SL).  Then, being safety minded, created another time machine backup (a mistake in hindsight)
    Restarted under new SL.
Tried to use migration assistant to migrate documents, apps, libraries, etc only to find only my latest backup SL backup is available which obviously doesn't have any of my files.  Migration Asst apparently only offers access to the previous 12/26 backup.  Crap.  At least I have my Time Machine backup.
Go to time machine and try to restore Macintosh HD to state it was in on 12/26.  It runs for a couple hours, asks me do I want to copy or replace the user profile (I choose replace)  and when finished there's no sign of any change…no docs, no apps, nothing visibly different.  I tried again, this time, Time Machine says my hard drive is full and I can't restore!  I look at hard drive "get info" and sure enough it says I'm using 280GB out of 293GB.  However when I "get info" on the individual Apps, Library, System & Users it only adds up to ~7.5GB of space.  So clearly Time Machine has copied massive files (likely twice now) that are somehow invisible to me.
I'm quite frustrated at this point.  I realize I took the more complicated path by not just "upgrading" and I made a couple missteps along the way.  However, neither Migration Assistant or a Time Machine restore are able to help put my Documents and Apps back and now my hard drive is full.  I'm tempted to just erase and reinstall clean SL again and then manually move things from my 12/26 Time Machine backup but I'm concerned about doing this right.  Is there a more sensible, possibly less drastic way of untangling this mess?  Thanks for any input.

Tell me you can get at the Time Machine data. That will put a smile on my face!
Yes, most importantly, my data is still very safe and I can see the 12/26 time machine data on the external drive, both by browsing to it with the finder and also when I launch Time Machine and browse back in time.
What I was unable to do is:
Migrate the 12/26 data using the "Migration Assistant" app "after" I did a backup of my new Snow Leopard install which I realize was a mistake.  Now when I attempt to use the "Migration Assistant" app and point it to the Time Machine volume, all it sees is the useless 12/28 Snow Leopard backup which obviously has none of my data.  I can't point Migration Assistant to the 12/26 restore point which has the real data.
Following that I attempted to launch the "Time Machine" app, go back in time to restore to the 12/26 backup.  This seemed to fill my internal HDD with (I'm guessing) files and folders that I am unable to see.  When I command click to get-info on the internal HDD icon it shows it being full.  However browsing through the drive via Finder it seems very empty.  Command clicking to get info on the 4 folders in the internal HDD, it shows a total of 7.5GB used.  Perhaps my data is there but hidden, however since I tried this twice, there's likely a level of redudancy that's quite a mess now.  It seemed simple but   Reading the article you sent, it sounds like I should have booted with the Snow Leopard disk and done the
From what I've read, I understand there are three ways to migrate my 12/26 data:
    1. Migration Assistant App (because of the above description, I think cannot work anymore)
    2. Time Machine App
    3. Manually browse and copy necessary files and folders from the external
What I was trying to understand was when you say "transfer," which of these options are you referring to?  I'm gathering #2, using the Time Machine app to restore as opposed using Migration Assistant?
By the way, I appreciate your patience and generosity with your time.  I will make sure to print and follow the tutorials you sent as well.
