Upgrade to 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 ??

I'm upgrading my Thinkpad T61 from 32-bit Vista to Windows 7.
Is there any reason I should stick with 32-bit? I plan to do a clean install either way.
As far as I can tell, I'm compatible with 64-bit. Most of my software these days is web-based and I should be fine with Adobe Creative Suite. I'll update my bios if needed before installation.
Any words of wisdom or advice?
thanks!

Hello,
One thing to consider is that you may wish to upgrade your T61's memory beyond the currently installed 2GB of RAM.  From looking at this page, the T61 appears to be upgradeable to at leat 4GB of RAM.  With a 32-bit operating system, you will be limited to 3-and-a-fraction GB of RAM, due to limitations in how memory is utilized, but in a 64-bit environment, the problem effectively goes away.  At work, I run Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition x64 on a T61 with 4GB of RAM.
As RichK noted, some older programs which perform direct hardware access will no longer work (unless updated with 64-bit compatible code), however, any program written in the past five years or so should either run just fine as a 32-bit process, or come in a 64-bit version.

  • Can't Upgrade and can't remove itunes on Windows 7 64 bit.

I transferred itunes from one windows 7 32 bit machine to a windows 7 64 bit machine. All worked fine till I tried to upgrade itunes. It will not upgrade, saying that this version of itunes is intended for a 32 bit machine. I have tried to use the 64 bit version of the itunes upgrade but still get the same problem report. I can not remove the itunes on the machine because I get the same trouble report.

Can someone please respond to my request for support?  I tried the provided correct answer at https://discussions.apple.com/message/11561783#11561783  but it did not work.
I also got a MSFT tech support person to remotely look at my machine, for what its worth, he said the registry file is fine and to contact Apple support.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

2011 MacBook Pro, 64 bit i7 quad core, upgraded to Lion OSx, Bootcamp installed with Windows 7, wanting to install Windows 8 (don't ask), tried downloading/installing bootcamp 5.0.5033 (both on the mac/windows partitions (actually using a parallel to run Windows)), error message something similar to bootcamp doesn't support this Windows
So the question is am I doing something wrong? Should I just try and install windows 8 through my windows 7 partition and see if I can use the bootcamp 5.05033. Or do I solely have to use the bootcamp to install Windows 8? I'm not too familiar with bootcamp and how it runs.

if you're using parallels and full bootcamp then you're making it 100% more troublesome for youself then it needs to be
bootcamp is running windows directly on the hardware this give full memory and cpu and 3d video game power
running windows in parallels is running a virtual machine where one can't run powerful games and the like but one can have it in a window and change fast between osx and windows
parallels as the only virutal machine (as far as I know) support not have the operating system as a file on the osx harddisk but can access a bootcamp parition as virtual machine but without the benefits bootcamps provides
it's a service parallels provide for those who want both to play games in normal bootcamp and sometimes use windows in a virutal machine
just install it like a normal virtual machine and you need not worry about bootcamp drivers and the likes
plus it would mean that the windows part would be a part of the timemachine bacup of osx
which it is not when it's in bootcamp

  • Windows 7 32-bit to 64-bit upgrade

I will be getting a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983 Laptop, and it has only 3gb's of DDR2 RAM, so it comes with Windows 7 32-bit, but I want more RAM, and I was going to add 2gb's more, so i could run 64-bit. Does anyone know any way I could upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit? And if not, will the computer recognize the two extra gig's of RAM and use them, and still run 32-bit ok? Because I heard that the computer needed 3gb's of ram for 32-bit, and even if you added more RAM to it the computer wouldn't recognize it and would just run on the 3gb's already installed. I would really like an answer!

    Hi BlargeMan,
As Mark said, if you would like to install Windows 7 x64 bit over x32 version, you need perform a clean installation.
Regarding the recommended System Requirements for Windows 7, please refer to this thread: Windows 7 min. system requirements.
As to the RAM in x32 bit version operating systems, if you have more than 4GB RAM, it will only recognized a portion of the physical 4GB of RAM (ranges from 2.75GB to 3.5GB depending on the devices installed, motherboard's chipset & BIOS). If you would like to know more information about this, please refer to this website.
Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.
In addition, before you install Windows 7, it is recommended running Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check the potential issues.

  • Lenovo Windows 7 Upgrade Program site is broken (forcing 64-bit to 32-bit)

When I attempt to register my T400 for upgrade to Windows 7 the website offers me the incorrect upgrade.
If I set the Original Windows OS installed to: Windows Vista Business 64-bit
the Eligible upgrade Windows 7 product is: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
The opposite is also true; original Vista Business 32-bit -> upgrade Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.
Other version upgrades also give the same problem.

Use ABR tool to backup your product key.
Download a 32 bit version of your windows 7
Install, then activate with with your old product key, and install all drivers as needed

  • Upgrade Roadmap for Windows/Oracle/SAP from 32 bit to 64 bit

    Hello,
what steps do I have to perform when upgrading the following system:
    SOURCE:
    - OS Windows 2000 32 bit
    - Oracle 8.1.6 32 bit
    - SAP 46C 32 bit (46D Kernel)
    TARGET:
    - OS Windows 2003 64 bit
    - Oracle 10.2 64 bit
    - SAP ERP 2004 64 bit
In which sequence do I have to perform what steps?
First the OS, then the DB, then the SAP?
    or something else?
    Thanks for any help,

    Hi Michael
Sorry to open your old thread.
Would you mind sharing your upgrade experience on 32 bit to 64 bit?
We are planning to upgrade our CRM 4.0 (Oracle 10g + Windows 2003 32 bit)
    Source:
    CRM 4.0 (Web AS 620 + 640 kernel)
    Java 620
    Windows 32 bit
    Oracle 10g
    Target
    CRM 4.0 (Web AS 620 + 640 kernel)
    Java 620
    Windows 64 bit
    Oracle 10g
I am bit confused about installing SAP CRM on Windows 64 bit software. I understand that you install SAP using 640 kernel for 64 bit.
I would appreciate if you can share your experience or the procedure followed.
After the 64 bit migration is completed, we will be upgrading our CRM 4.0 to CRM 2007.

  • 32 bit to 64 bit upgrade in Windows x86_64 on Oracle

Please suggest an approach for 32 bit to 64 bit migration on Windows/Oracle combination 9i.
PAM indicates that, Oracle runs in 64bit mode only in 10g version
This would require an oracle upgrade.
Please suggest an approach when your database size is huge.
    Govind

    Hi Markus,
Let me cleary explain the sceanrio,
I have a Sandbox 4.6C , Oracle 9.2.0.8 with Windows 2003 Server on 32 bit with over  1 TB of data.
Now i have a brand new x86_64 bit hardware with Windows 2003 Server 64 bit OS install.
I have to use this to make a System Copy of the current Sandbox and upgrade it ECC 6.0.
How do i plan this, it is quite confusing???
    There are two things here
    a) 32 bit to 64 bit migration
    b) Oracle 10g upgrade
    Plan a)
Make an Export of the current 9i 32 bit database , fresh install of Oracle 10g  64 bit on the new 64 bit server and import the whole data
But the only problem is huge data to export.
    Plan b)
Make a homogeneous sytem copy since it is Windows 32 bit to Windows 64 bit and then upgrade to Oracle 10g. This requires me to install Oracle 32 bit 9i on a 64 bit hardware, is it SAP recommended??
    How do i do this??

  • Upgrading windows 8.1 32 bit to 64 bit

I purchased windows 8.1 on the microsoft store and I selected the online download version, and it automatically installed as a 32 bit OS. I have looked for solutions on the forums and internet, but all of these solutions include a clean DVD reinstall,
and I do not have that. Is there any way I could get a disk version mailed to my house or any other way to get a 64 bit version? Or do I have to repurchase windows?

    Hi,
You can't upgrade a 32-bit to 64-bit version, this always requires a full re-installation. There are ways to download the correct media from the microsoft website.
See this page for example: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading Solaris 10 from 32-bit to 64-bit in a VirtualBox VM

    Hello,
I am running 32-bit Sol 10 u5 x86 as a guest in a Sun VirtualBox (Vbox) virtual machine on a 32-bit WinXP host with 64-bit VT-capable Xeon processors, and am considering upgrading Solaris 10 to 64-bit using the latest version of Vbox (2.0.0). After installing WinXP Professional x64 and the 64-bit version of Vbox, will I have to completely re-install Sol 10 to get it to run in 64-bit, or is there some way to get it to 64-bit without a re-install? The Vbox forums suggested that I post this question on a Solaris forum, as they don't know the answer.
They apparently also do not know if Windows XP x64 is a compatible host OS on which to run 64-bit guests. They list only Vista, Linux, and OpenSolaris as supported 64-bit host OSs. Has anyone used WinXP x64 as a host for Vbox 64-bit guests? Due to policy, Vista is not available to me on my system/network.
    Thank you...

The x86 installer will place both 32-bit and 64-bit code on the disk.
The loader fired by GRUB will attempt to detect the proper hardware and launch the correct kernel.
Other portions of the upgrade could conceivably cause a problem, but having the CPUs go from 32-bit only to 64-bit capable shouldn't be an issue. You don't have to make any changes.

  • Migration of Oracle 32-bit to 64-bit on same Windows host.

    Hi,
Title: Migration of Oracle 32-bit to 64-bit on same Windows host.
We have windows host x64 bit. Oracle is 10g 32 bit and we want to migrate it to 10g 64 bit. I would like to know the steps. Note 940811 is not clear enough.
    Please help.
    Many thanks,
    Mohan.

    Hi,
I think SAP Note 940811 is not relevant to your case as far as I understand your case in your previous thread because you are already on oracle 10.2 and there is no upgrade required.
Please check SAP note 192822 and please check below extract from this note:
          5. Can I switch to 64-bit, even though I already run the same oracle release on 32-bit?
Yes. The only thing that needs to be done is
run del_ora.csh to delete the 32-bit software
    install the 64-bit software
    start the database.
As the wordsize changes with 64-bit, all pl-sql-predures should be recompiled.
Therefore please run the following two scipts on db-level:
          @$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/utlip.sql -invalidates all plsql-procedures
@$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/utlrp.sql -recreates the plsql-procedures with the new word size
    Thanks
    Sunny

  • Computers came with Windows 7 64-bit and we need Windows 7 32-bit

Our company purchased 5 IdeaCentre K300 computers from a big blue retail store. The computers came with W7 64-bit Home Premium preinstalled. We also purchased 5 Windows Anytime Upgrade PIN's  allowing us to upgrade to W7 Professional so we can add these computers to our domain. We have several products that launch from domain share and won't work with the 64-bit OS and running in XP mode just flat out doesn't work (for those apps). The person who purchased the computers was told the computers contain both 64-bit and 32-bit W7 Home Premium and we can switch to the 32-bit version by using the OneKey Recovery utility then run the Windows Anytime Upgrade. I booted one of the computer several time and pressed the F2 key when the Lenovo logo appeared and only have one option, the 64-bit version.
How do I obtain the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium for these computer?
    Thanks in advance,
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

it's not possible to switch windows 32 <> 64 bit by performing clean windows installation ( with one key recover )
you need to install clean windows installation. download legal windows iso from the link below, then make a clean installation for your computer, for activation, use online activation or call microsoft.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/428068-legal-windows-7-download-links-just-like-...
ps: make sure you download 32 windows. and burn recovery discs before clean windows installation, just in case.
you can download drivers from the link below:
    http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/uk/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_list.aspx?CategoryID=856301
    edit:
windows anytime upgrade pin's allowing us to upgrade to w7 professional
you may select windows 7 32 bit while upgrading windows. so you won't need to download/install windows 7 from legal iso.

  • Windows 7 64-bit, Firefox 13.0, is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Using Firefox 13.0 and Windows 7 ( I think is 64-bit). Had flashplayer crashes, when Adobe flashplayer upgraded, so downloaded older version to install, but don't know whether to use 32-bit or 64-bit. Can someone help me?

In ordinary circumstances this is easily resolved. If you navigate to the Adobe site using the browser that you wish to install Firefox on it auto detects the browser type and provides the correct download.
If you have 64 bit OS and 64bit Internet Explorer, then as Tobbi says you will need the 64 bit FlashPlayer.
However the standard Firefox Browsers for Windows are 32 bit as you say in the question title.
You will therefore need both versions a 64 bit version for Windows IE and a 32bit version for Firefox. In any event separate flash Software is required for the two browsers.
Whilst installing FlashPlayer be aware that the current version is version 11.3 but that some users are finding problems, sometimes this is resolved by installing an older version of Flash Player, either Version 10.3, which is fully secure or Version 11.2 which has more features but is less secure.
We have some Knowledge Base articles on the subject of Flash Player and are trying to keep them updated as this situation evolves:
    * [[flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems]]
    * [[flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox]]
    * [[Flash 11.3 crashes]]
N.B. AFAIK these present problems are due to a security change relating to Windows, and so do not affect Linux or Mac users.
Other, more technical information about these issues can be found under these Links:
