Upgrade to 7.3.1?  Scared!

Last time I did an upgrade..it was sheer disaster. SOmeone tell me why I want this newest version, please.

ugh. i am extremely not happy with itunes 7.3 and i really wish i could go back. always getting an error msg for downloading album artwork, trouble connecting to the store. and for some reason, it won't hold the changes i make (genre, track numbers ( x of x ) etc.)
so disappointed. this is the first time i've been so annoyed with itunes.
in regards to people having music "grayed" out or saying you don't have permission in vista... it's not the itunes settings, it's the vista admin settings, you have to change them all over, it's really annoying, but you only have to do it once.

  • Free upgrade to Yosemite from 10.6.8 - FAILED

I've spent the last few hours trying to upgrade my iMac to Yosemite 10.10.2 (from 10.6.8), which I believe was do-able.
URK - that's HOURS I'm never getting back - all for NOTHING - it FAILED TWICE.
    What is going on?

When I upgraded to Yosemite this past weekend, on both my MacBook and iMac, I thought the upgrade failed because after an hour or so, all I got was a white screen with a thermometer half way - then everything stopped. I waited for over an hour on the MacBook (which I upgraded first).
I was scared, and I was planning a trip to the Apple store. But I decided to force quit the MacBook by pressing and holding the power button. After it turned off, I waited a minute, then pressed the power button. It booted right up. I figure maybe a neutron lost its way and Yosemite just wasn't able to reboot my Mac. But I can see why some users would think the upgrade failed.
So, I am wondering if this same situation happened to you, one in which the upgrade just stops AFTER it has been processed and is supposed to but doesn't startup.
I upgraded 10.6.8-->Mavericks (6 months ago)-->Yosemite (this weekend). I don't know, but it seems to me you should be able to install directly to Yosemite from 10.6.8. Just wondering, but maybe you could try upgrading to Mavericks, then to Yosemite.
As for your two hours of lost time you will never get back, well... welcome to the club. For some reason, you are in a minority of Apple users, as I have been, who have experiemced great frustration. As they say - there are two types of computer user, those that have been frustrated, and those who will be frustrated.
Calm down, take it one step at a time. Answer the questions asked by those in the preceding posts. They will then help you.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I recently upgraded my mac desktop to oxs 10.9.2 and when I open my i photo library there are no pictures.  The message is "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade.Scared to hit upgrade!!!

I recently upgraded my mac desktop to oxs 10.9.2 and when I opened i photo, it says the photo livrary needs to be upgraded to work with this version of I photo.  Where are my pictures?  The message is "Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of Iphoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete".  I'm scared to upgrade!!  Does this mean my photos can't be read once I upgrade?  Where are my pictures?

First have you backed up  your computer, if you have and your iPhoto library is in the back up you have nothing to be concerned about. If you are not using at least Time Machine to back up your system then you should be concerned because well frankly that is simply bad computing practice and you risking all of your data.
As for the message you received all that means is your system was using an earlier version of iPhoto with the version of OS X you previously had installed and now that you have updated to 10.9.2 (Mavericks) your version of iPhoto has also upgraded and  needs to get ready to import all of your pictures. If you have backup then you should be confident the upgrade will go through smoothly, Apple generally has very good instructions and will not give bad advice, second guessing them may be cautious but is generally unnecessary.

  • HT1338 Do I have to reinstall my print drivers after upgrading to 10.8? I seem to have lost both my printers and my ability to download from my camera. Never had problems with 10.7. I'm a little scared.

Do I have to reinstall my printer drivers after upgrading to 10.8? I seem to have lost the ability to communicate with either of 2 wireless printers and to download pictures from my camera. (Photoshop keeps telling me it can't find the device.) Any suggestions?

Have you repaired permissions and restarted your computer after installing ML?  Checked your printer settings in System Preferences?
If Software Update does not list any updated drivers for your model printer, you should go to the printer's manufacturer website and download the drivers from there and/or contact their tech support to determine if your printer is compatible w/ML.
Read the various Knowledge Base ML printing articles.  Here are a few to get you started:
OS X Mountain Lion: If the software for your printer can’t be found
OS X Mountain Lion: Troubleshoot a USB printer
OS X Mountain Lion: Troubleshoot an AirPort printer
If none of the above work, post back w/the model of your printer and how it's connected to your computer.  USB?  Wireless?

  • Scared to upgrade to Tiger; will I have to purchase upgrades for my apps?

    Hi,
I have been looking for info on application support for Tiger, and I am either looking in the wrong place or it does not exist, because have searched and have not found a definitive answer.
I work in the video industry and I have spent a lot of money on programs that I use all the time in my G4 PowerMac running 10.3.9.
    I have:
    Final Cut Pro HD;
    DVD STudio Pro 3;
    Adobe Photoshop CS
    Macromedia Dreamweaver MX
Also, I have an old scanner that I love that DOES have support for OSX, but not Tiger specifically.
I am wondering if any or all of these apps work as is in Tiger or am I going to have to purchase upgrades for these programs to work with Tiger. Is there any where I can look up specific support issues for my apps before I upgrade and find out, "oops, that don't work here."
I was content to stay in Panther since why "fix what ain't broken", as they say, but I do feel I am getting left behind. All MAC mags I use to love to read for tips and tricks now only pertain to Tiger and widgets and spotlight look super cool.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    G4 PowerMac MDD 1.25 Ghz DP; 17 PowerBook G4 1.33 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Your apps are all going to work just fine. The scanner? Check for an update to the software. Probably be just fine.
Here's the thing, though. it sounds like you do not have a backup on an external. If not, all bets are off. You are jumping with no net. Good luck.

  • Scared to upgrade to Snow Leopard

I have been extremely hesitant to upgrade my 20" Core 2 Duo iMac (aluminum early 2008). I am still running Leopard 3 years into ownership. I am a designer who relies on his Adobe CS5 suite to work and thus am cautious. I have read so many conflicting stories; buy Snow Leopard and upgrade, wipe the drive and start from fresh, no it won't have a problem, yes it will cause problems.
What am I to do? I really want the full 64-bit advantage. Does anyone have words of advice for this?
    Regards

Like stated above, there is always the element of risk involved and like you said you have your options:
    Upgrade install or Erase install.
There are thousands of customer's who have simple gone and got the upgrade disc, put it in, follow the installation and upgrade fine. On the other hand dealing on the technical end there are calls regarding booting to grey screen, corrupt OS after upgrade (this is usually caused by people getting the upgrade disc from 10.4 to 10.6 without the Mac Box Set) forcing you to do an Erase Install. But for the most part is is an extremely easy process. I can say it is a rock solid system and rarely see tech calls related to CS5 not working on 10.6... but it's not a guarantee. With every update on any system there always seems to be some issue with Adobe CS at least that I have noticed. In most cases what I suggest is uninstall adobe completely and reinstall if not do an archive install after an update causes an issue with Adobe CS products.
Do what was mentioned above, create a cloned image of your system, copy it to an external device. In addition to that copy the actual folders/files manually because I am one who does not put all my faith in a cloned image (the more backup the better). Then do a Time Machine backup in addition to all of that. Now proceed to do the upgrade. If CS5 does not work after the upgrade, uninstall CS5 and then reinstall it. Most applications reside in the "application" layer but Adobe products like to dwell in the root system. So when we get updates, I believe this is why most people have issues with it after an update, call me crazy. I have done plenty of upgrades in a lab with plenty of success in the upgrade.
If you do the right backup and take precaution you will be fine. If not you have AppleCare to call or refer to these boards.

  • I can't update my iPhoto after upgrading to Maverick

I just upgraded to Mavericks and ever since, my iPhoto (v. 9.2) will not work. It has a grey circle with a line through it over the application. I do see in my app store I have an update for iPhoto 11, but when I try to upgrade it and enter my apple ID, I get this error message. I only have this one apple ID and password, so I have no idea why it is saying this. I am so scared I've lost my photos!!!
    Error message reads:
Update Unavailable with this Apple ID:
This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.
I do not understand this or what to do. I have not ever tried to purchase this previously.
    PLEASE HELP!!

You must log into th eApp store using the Apple ID that was used to set up the computer
If that is not working then you must contact App store support - link is on the right of the app store windw

  • Memory Upgrade in 2009 Mac Mini?

    Hi,
I want to upgrade my Mac Mini to 4 GB of ram, it's the core 2 duo 2009 model.
I don't want to pay silly amounts for Mac own memory, has anyone ever used Crucial Memory in a Mini Mac? if so how does it run?
The other option I guess is to look at Corsair! As i believe they make the memory for Apple anyway! anyone else upgraded themselves? how did it go?
    Thanks

I read a lot before I upgraded mine to 4 GB. The difficulty was overrated. It took me < 40 minutes from never opening a Mini to running it with 4gb all put back together. Don't be scared by others descriptions. But do be careful whenever you take apart any delicate electronics.
It was far easier than taking apart my Thinkpads. There are videos on-line showing the whole process. Much better than still pictures.

  • I'm scared.  Can you help?  I can't jump from here to there.

    Dear Apple MobileMe
I am very eager to make the move from MobileMe to iCloud, but...
As you can see from your own email, this is far from simple
My wife and I totally depend on my Macbook Pro (1), my old Powerbook that my wife uses (2), our iPhones (3 & 4), our iPad (5), my Time Machine, and my MobileMe (6), including Backups to our iDisk on MobileMe to keep our lives running.
iCal's synced across 6 Apple platforms
Address Books synced across 6 Apple platforms
Email synced across 6 Apple platforms (me using Mail and wife using AOL)
Bookmarks synced across 6 Apple platforms
Various apple ID's synced across 6 Apple platforms
    You get the picture
I would hate to mess this delicately balanced Apple computer ecosystem up at all.
iOS 10.7 requires that I upgrade a bunch of my key work apps and figure out a way to transfer a 10 year dependence on Quicken onto some other equally robust financial management platform that doesn't seem to exist.  Just to add insult to potential injury.
    I'm scared.
Wish this whole process could be 500% more automated.
We've been on Macs  and other Apple devices since 1987.  I can't keep track of all of my "Apple ID's" for this and that that you've asked me to set up for each device and for each service over the years.  Everything's registered with you.
    Devices
    MobileMe email aliases
    iTunes
    iDisk
    App Store
    AppleCare(s)
    MobileMe
    Apple.com support (here)
    Apple ProCare
    Apple iDisk Public folder
    etc.
    etc.
You should be able to gather all of my identities together into one place and figure out the best way to migrate me to the new Apple iCloud Garden of Eden.
You've got to find a way to help us work all this out.  It's more than intimidating.  We're frozen in fear.  We just can't jump from here to there.

iCloud is here Dear MobileMe member,
iCloud is here and you can now make the transition from MobileMe. You can move your
MobileMe mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks to iCloud, and keep your me.com and
mac.com email addresses. iCloud is a breakthrough set of free cloud services, including iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream
and Documents in the Cloud, that works seamlessly with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or
PC to store your content in iCloud and push it to all your devices. When content changes on one
device, all your other devices are updated automatically and wirelessly.
    Making the Move
Before moving to iCloud, make sure that your iOS devices and computers have the required
software and your data is properly backed up by following these steps:
    Get iTunes 10.5.
Download iTunes 10.5 to your Mac or PC.
Update your devices to iOS 5.
Update your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch to iOS 5 by connecting each
device to your Mac or PC and following the instructions in iTunes.
When you are asked to provide your Apple ID during iOS setup, use
your MobileMe email address and password.
Update your computers.Mac: Update to OS X Lion v10.7.2PC:   Update to Windows 7 or Windows Vista Service Pack 2 andinstall the iCloud Control Panel for Windows.
    Back up your MobileMe data.
For detailed instructions, review this article.
    Verify your contacts and bookmarks.
Verify that your contacts and bookmarks are completely up to date on
at least one device you will use with iCloud. They will be uploaded to
iCloud from your devices after you move. iCloud will not copy any
contacts or bookmarks directly from me.com.
When you are ready, go to me.com/move and follow the instructions to move your account to
    iCloud.
    Important Notes
If your me.com or mac.com email address is used with more than one Apple ID, you may be
unable to access some iCloud services. If this occurs, you can remove duplicate email
addresses from your other Apple IDs by visiting My Apple ID. You can also use different Apple IDs for iCloud and your Store purchases (including iTunes,
App Store and iBookstore). For more information and detailed instructions, review this article. You can make the move from MobileMe to iCloud anytime between now and June 30, 2012. For
answers to some of the most common questions about the transition, see the MobileMe
    transition FAQ. Sincerely,
    Apple
iCloud requires iOS 5 on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2; a Mac computer
with OS X Lion; or a PC with Windows Vista or Windows 7 (Outlook 2007 or 2010 or an up-to-date browser is
required for accessing email, contacts and calendars). Some features require a Wi-Fi connection. Some features
are not available in all countries. Access to some services is limited to 10 devices. Previous purchases may be
unavailable if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.

You are receiving this email from Apple to notify you of service information regarding your MobileMe account.

This is a user-to-user forum: you aren't talking to Apple here.
I do sympathize with your situation: you are among many for whom upgrading is impracticable, but who are dependent on MobileMe facilities which will be withdrawn next June.
As you say, you will need 10.7.2 to access iCloud on a Mac, and iOS5 for mobile devices.
I can't offer you any easy solutions, but this list may at least clarify the exact situation for you:
Your email, calendars, contacts and bookmarks, and 'Find my iPhone' will be migrated to iCloud.
Your iDisk, together with website hosting and Gallery. will continue to work as before until next June.
You will be able to access email, calendar and contacts on the iCloud website at http://icloud.com provided your browser is reasonably up-to-date.
You will not be able to sync contacts or bookmarks from a pre-Lion Mac.
You will be able to enter the server settings for email manually in the Mail application and access your email.
You will not be able to sync your calendars directly.
Some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. BusyCal is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion.
There appears to be no method of syncing contacts (though Address Book on a Mac can be synced with Google or Yahoo address books - I don't know how reliable this is).

    Best Regards,
    Desiree Cardenas

    Hi Eric,
In fact in the previous post you can see:
    the problem is with the
RDDEXECL JOB. Which is in the status CANCELED
When we Check the JOB LOG it gives this:
    22.10.2007 10:59:35 Job started
22.10.2007 10:59:35 Step 001 started (program RDDEXECL, variant , user ID DDIC)
22.10.2007 10:59:35 All DB buffers of application server vensapd were synchronized PU
    22.10.2007 11:01:17 ABAP/4 processor: CONVT_CODEPAGE_INIT
    22.10.2007 11:01:17 Job cancelled 00
When you click on ABAP/4 processor: CONVT_CODEPAGE_INIT you get this:
    Runtime errors CONVT_CODEPAGE_INIT
    Exception CX_SY_CODEPAGE_CONVERTER_INIT
    Occurred on 22.10.2007 at 11:01:17
The conversion of some code pages is not supported.
    What happened?
The conversion of texts in code page '1800' to code page '1100' is not
    supported here.
The running ABAP program 'SAPLSTXD' had to be terminated, since conversion
could cause incorrect data to be generated.
    Error analysis
An exception occurred. This exception is dealt with in more detail below
. The exception, which is assigned to the class
    'CX_SY_CODEPAGE_CONVERTER_INIT', was neither
caught nor passed along using a RAISING clause, in the procedure "READ_TEXTLINES" "(FORM)".
Since the caller of the procedure could not have expected this exception
to occur, the running program was terminated.
The reason for the exception is:
One of the two code pages, '1800' or '1100' may be unknown to the system.
It may be that a Unicode code page was specified for a file in the
LEGACY MODE. This is not permitted.
It is possible that additional parameters for the code page conversion
(for example, the replacement character) have invalid values. Further
information can be found under "Internal Notes".
If the conversion error occurred while the system was opening, reading,
or writing a file, the name of this file is 'no file'.
(For more information on this file: " X ð####Ìÿ#,").
Sorry for the big amount of information. I will put the complete JOB LOG.
    LOG:

The running ABAP program 'SAPLSTXD' had to be terminated, since conversion
could cause incorrect data to be generated.
    What can you do?
Print out the error message (using the "Print" function)
and make a note of the actions and input that caused the
    error.
To resolve the problem, contact your SAP system administrator.
You can use transaction ST22 (ABAP Dump Analysis) to view and administer
termination messages, especially those beyond their normal deletion
    date.
If the application required you to enter a code page, you may be able to
avoid the error by restarting the application and entering a different
    code page.
You can display the available codepages using the transaction SCP. For
more utilities for codepages, use the transaction SNLS.

  • Time to upgrade Quicksilver HD & DVR - What? How? Suggestions?

    Hi,
I am considering upgrading my internal hard drive and replacing my existing DVR. I hate to mess with things that are not broke, but I am at the point now that I think I need to just go for it! I am not too tech savvy so bear with me. I would appreciate any recommendations and/or suggestions as what to use & how to do it the least painful way.
    1. What type of internal HD do I need? Am I limited to the size I use? Can I leave the one I already have in the computer and just add another larger size internal HD - so I could have two? Do they need to be switched around?
    2. What kind of DVR would be compatible with my computer and what needs to be done to computer to do the upgrade. (NEC 3550A, or Pioneer 110?)
    3. Should I update to 10.3.9 before or after installing new hardware? (I've been scared to update - all works fine now. Anything I should do to avoid problems after updating????)
Here is what I have NOW:
    - G4 Quicksilver 2002 (800mhz/768mg)
    - Running OS x 10.3.8 & OS9 (even though I do not use OS9 that much anymore)
    - Pioneer DVR-105
    - 40gb internal HD(only 14gb left available!)
Sorry for all the questions. I have read some of the posts on here and think I have an idea of what I need to do, but just want to make sure and verify.
    Thanks in advance,
    Leah

Hi! Sounds like you're well on your way!
Any of the approaches you have mentioned should work okay. I would take the easiest approach and clone the startup volume from the 40GB drive to a partition on the 160GB drive, check the cloned volume to insure that all went well, then apply the updates to it from Software Update. When I was certain that the updates went well (no rush, give it some time), I would then clone the newly-cloned volume back to the 40GB drive, which would provide me with a complete and up-to-date backup volume that I knew was fully operational.
You can use Disk Utility's Restore option to create the clone, but I'd recommend Super Duper or CarbonCopyCloner, which are faster and less quirky. The links are below.
As long as you do not choose the option to clone to a disk image, the cloned volume will be bootable (if you make a disk image clone, you can't boot to it because you have to open/expand the image before you can do anything with it). Just clone one volume to another volume and it will be a bootable duplicate of the original volume.
You may boot from either the master or slave drive. It's recommended that the master drive be the startup drive for better efficiency, but it isn't essential. When two drives operate on the same bus, the master drive gets priority from the controller when both drives need to access the CPU at the same time. Since the system drive is the most critical one in relation to data flow with the CPU, it normally is set as master. This only affects your Mac's speed when both drives need access at the same time, though. Otherwise, it makes no difference whether you're booted from the master or the slave.
You can switch the drives around at any time if you wish - just be certain that the jumpers are reset when you change their locations on the ribbon cable.
Concerning "junk", the only time I do a fresh install of the OS is when there's a major upgrade, such as going from Panther to Tiger. That's when all my "junk" that's hidden in various folders all over the place gets thoroughly cleaned out... Installing everything from scratch on an OS update for me just seems to be too much work for the benefit that's gained.
Some third party applications tend to put required files in non-standard locations, which is one reason to be leery of copying apps over, rather than reinstalling them... the supporting files are easy to miss. Unless you have a lot of junk to get rid of, I'd stick with a clone of the whole works, weeding things out bit-by-bit afterwards, if you must. After all, you will then have a bootable clone for backup, if you mistakenly toss the wrong thing and have problems.
You are going to have two drives with a total of three volumes. Particularly as you use the second partition on the 160GB drive, please remain aware that there's no way to backup 160GB to a 40GB drive. As your data storage increases, you might consider budgeting for yet another drive somewhere down the line...

  • Time to upgrade, but concerned...

Hi...I currently have an iBook G4, and while I love this little white book, it is deffently time to upgrade. I have droped this puppy more then once and now it is a permenent desktop due to hinge damage.
Anyways, im thinking of buying a new macbook, but a couple things concern me.
    1. Ive heard the new macbooks overheat like a vintage PSX during ff7. haha.....you know what i mean...(if you don't, look up some PSX game system history...lol). Anyways, my ibooks fan never turns on. during the 2+ years that ive owned it, its maybe turned on 5 times, and that was usually during WOW. It also scared the crap outta me, because it would just turn on and id hear this wizzing noise.

    1. Ive heard the new macbooks overheat like a
    vintage PSX during ff7.
I got mine 5 months ago and when I first got it, it did run hot. But after the firmware update, it's been beautiful. I mean it never seems to get hot. Not even toasty-warm.
And I rarely noticed the fans running, though, of course, sometimes they do.

Again, there were some hiccups at the very beginning, but at this point the experimentation is waaay over. Every new Mac is using them and they're working out brilliantly. Lightening speed and great performance.
Upgrade, guy. You will be amazed not just by the speed and performance of this machine, but by its stunningly beautiful screen, the incredibly responsive keyboard and being able to use the built-in camera. It's really a fantastic machine.
