Upgrade to Blu-Ray Optical DVD-RW for HP DV-5

Ok, thanks to MumboDog my hard drive issues are fully resolved.  Thanks MumboDog.  Now my next question is I've been having problems with the button not opening my optical drive.  I can bypass the button with the paper clip trick, but who wants to carry a paper clip with them?
So I was wondering if I could remove this drive and install a blu-ray optical dvd-rw for the HP DV-5?  Anyone have suggestions on where to buy, model no., or any suggestions as to a temporary fix to my current situation.  By the way, the drive shows up in the BIOS but its currently not reading any cd's or dvd's.  Could I be missing a driver?  I did install the LightScribe drivers, got all current updates and installed Windows 7.
Thanks in advance for any and all of your thoughts and suggestions.

Use device manager to uninstall the DVD drive, reboot and let windows reinstall it automatically, see if it works now.
The problem with upgrading optical drives in notebooks is the the tray bezel is unique to each model, and some are not removeable so you cannot transfer it to the new drive.
I use to buy generic optical drives from electronics retailers to replace broken ones in notebooks, take the old bezel off and transfer it to the new one, this way it looks like it belongs on the notebook like the original, but I have noticed they are no longer removeable on some models, so if you want it to look right you need to order it from HP.

  • Best workflow for burning Blu-ray and DVD

    Hi,
What's the best workflow for effciency sake for burning both a Blu-ray and a DVD of the same project?
Essientially I'd like to export and create a menu once, then be able to downrez to DVD. However, I'm not sure that is possible since blu-ray and DVD are differnt codecs.
    Thank you

The only way that you can get acceptable re-scaling of menus is to go from BR to DVD, and do the editing in Photoshop.  Simply re-scaling the menu here will not give acceptable results.
I usually copy the various button layers from the BR menu to a new DVD menu file created using the provided Photoshop preset.  You will still have to do  some manual re-scaling and alignment.  The thing that has given me the most trouble over the years is round button highlights - a segment is often chopped off.  Font sizes will probably need adjusting too.
Unless you are adept with handling layers and groups within Photoshop, it may be easier to start again.
Any attempt to convert within Encore is unlikely to produce acceptable menus in my experience.

Thanks.  I do not have the experience on burning discs from iMovie for the movie after editing (ie for video discs players).  It seems that i cannot find the relevant command in the tool bar for this purpsoe.  Would you please show me the way?
The command is gone because iDVD has been discontinued by Apple. After Apple discontinued iDVD they removed the iDVD burning link from iMovie. I still use iDVD sometimes, only because I have an old copy.

You have mentioned about Handbrake as a converter.  What is the RF no. (under Constant Quality) meant?  It seems that the smaller the no. is, the better quality will be.  What is the optimal no.? or should we use the Average Bitrate? Again, what is the best rate?  Furthermore, which format is more suitable or the best: H264 or mpeg 2/4?
I don't know what RF means. When I have used HandBrake, I've used presets that apply to what I want to do, so I don't know the meaning of each individual setting. However, it appears that many of them are listed in the HandBrake User's Guide that is linked from the Help menu in the program:

Photoshop is not amateur-level software, and although it can edit a video, it cannot burn a DVD. Unfortunately, because I still use iMovie, I haven't tried anything else. You might want to read the reviews of various DVD-burning applications in the Mac App Store.

  • Unable to play Blu-Ray or DVD through MediaSmart on HDX 18

My drive has the Blu-Ray symbol on it, so I know it's supposed to have Blu-Ray capabilities, but every time I put a Blu-Ray OR DVD in, MediaSmart DVD pops up and says "No disc loaded in drive." However, I am able to run DVDs through Windows Media Player. So, what's wrong with my MediaSmart? Is there another way to play Blu-Rays?

I have been having this problem for close to 10 months (since I bought my HP laptop). I didn't care initially because I could use other players to play regular DVDs and CDs. I was in a fix when I tried to watch my first movie in Blu Ray disc. I tried multiple installs and re-installs but couldn't get it to work. I however got to a point where it would say the "Disc is ready, hit the play button", but when I hit the play button it just flashed the screen (adjusting screen display) for a second and then did nothing. I finally called HP support and they walked me through regular install and install as per their process. When the initial instructions didn't work, I on my own did two things while on call.
    1. I first Un-installed my antivirus software, just to make sure it doesn't interfere with any of the other activities being instructed by the support staff since they were related to drivers.
    2. I had a Divx player and converter installed in my machine. Just on random thought of driver conflicts I went ahead and un-installed all the Divx related software. It asked me for a restart and bingo. When the machine rebooted, HP mediasmart DVD was able to play the Blu Ray disc.
I don't know which of the un-installs did it. My guess is it probably was Divx or a combination of both. I then asked HP support to stop going through rest of the process. He advised me to update the BIOS and software for fingerprint device which I did and it solved another problem for me. I saw the whole movie without too many issues. Once issue I found was when I paused the play using keyboard and resumed the sound went away. I then had to close and restart the movie. Based on above experience, I would advice anyone else having same problems to first un-install all the free DVD/CD/Blu Ray player software from the machine, then proceed with un-installing antivirus (if necessary at all. You can install it back again). I haven't tried re-running the blu ray disc after re-installing the anitvirus. I will re-post any problem here if I find any issue. That would also nail down the culprit.
Hope this helps so some of you.

  • FCP X fails to share to blu-ray or DVD, no chance to trash com.app...plsit from lion, what to do?

I burned some Blu-Ray before with my new FCPX, now I get a "Failed" message when I try to share both Blu-Ray and DVD to hard drive for an image or actually burn a disc. I saw one answer was to trash the com.apple.final...plist files but I do not know how to do it from the new Lion OS, any help?

    Tom,
Thank you so much. It trashed the files and now FCPX is burning my Blu-Ray :-)

  • Pioneer BDR-101A Blu-ray burner now available, for just $999

Is this blue ray/ hd dvd worth the money! They say it can burn hd dvd and blu-ray dvds. Please give me your thoughts?

No, not worth the money at this point, but it's not aimed at people who are looking for value. Right now it is the ultimate earlier adopter toy.
I'd love one so I could finally burn footage from my Hi-Def camcorder, but the price tag is just too steep, when I'm sure it will be $500 in six months or $250 in a year. I'm happy to just wait a bit longer. My footage isn't going anywhere.

  • Blu-Ray Optical Drive

Is it possible to install a Blu-Ray optical drive (read/write) into the Mac Pro? Will the Apple software author a BD disk then? I am very interested in being able to do this. Thanks.

I've had a Lacie External Blu-Ray for a while now and can confirm it would also work fine internally. The big issue with Blu-Ray and Apple at the moment is that the only way to author a Blu-Ray disc to work in PS3's and other Blu-Ray drives is to use Adobe Encore/Premiere. Then you come across another issue, Encore/Premiere is not compatible with Leopard. As mentioned here, Toast works flawlessly and is great for backups but that's where it ends.
Blu-Ray drives are coming down all the time so my advice would be wait 2-3 months and by then everything will have moved on hugely now that Blu-Ray appears to be winning the war.
If you want to author HD movies from your camera, buy an AppleTV and export for that. AppleTV is one of the most underrated pieces of Apple hardware ever and if the rumours are true that it will be dropped shortly, get one quick. Loads less hassle than Blu-Ray and works flawlessly.

  • Settings For HDV to Blu-ray and DVD

What is the best strategy for avoiding unnecessary rendering and transcoding issues? I edit HDV or AVCHD (from a DataVideo DN-60) in Premiere Pro CS6. I want to output to multiple formats - DVD, Blu-ray and Flash from the same project. I'd like to maximize quality as well to fit project on disk.
I'd also like to know which format most easily transcodes for my purposes. I typically shoot 23.98 or 29.98 fps 1080p, but sometimes 1080i.
I assume Dynamic Link is the way to go, but it doesn't look like the resulting settings are automatic. For example, if I go into project settings after Dynamic Linking a PPro sequence, and choose Blu-ray, I would expect the transcode settings to match the imported project. If it does not, then what should I change the default settings to?

Let me clarify the intent of my original post. I have read in places that it is best to choose export and DVD project settings that match the original footage whenever possible to avoid rendering problems. So, if I shoot and edit HDV or AVCHD footage say at 29.98 fps progressive, then what corresponding settings should I use for DVD and Blu-ray?
I see that with 29.97 fps the progressive option is not available in the Blu-ray
presets. Should I not shoot progressive then at 29.97?
How do I maximize quality of the video while fitting on a single disk? The only way to do it automatically is to Dynamic link, which you advise against. If I manually set exports, then I must calculate all the sequence outputs from Premiere. What then should my priorities be? For starters, MPEG2 Blu-ray or H.264 Blu-ray? What should take precedence, bitrate settings or number of passes?
I am also considering render/transcode speed. How do the above settings affect speed?

  • Best settings for highest quality results, Blu-Ray vs DVD

    I am shooting AVCHD 1080p 60fps with a JVC GC-PX100, using a Windows 7, i7-2600 3.40Ghz., 8Gb.RAM, 1 TB HDD with PE11 and a Pioneer Blu-Ray writer drive.
I'm looking to find the best settings for replay on a 55" HDTV.  I have tested both BD and DVD without seeing very much difference between the two as far as video quality is concerned,
but I want to make sure I'm using the right settings for the best quality on both drives. Can someone please offer a step by step settings procedure for both BD and DVD, also which do you
think is the better route to take between the two?
Also, I have noticed there is a ghosting image after letters/numbers on faster moving content (like railroad cars) on my video even before transferring it, can anyone give some insight to what that might be and if there may be a solution ??
Many thanks for your anticipated help.

    Rikko
    Thanks for the reply.
Referring back to your post 4.
Additional info:  When I published my test video for DVD I chose “Computer” on the Publish+Share drop-down list, then chose MPEG, Presets: HDTV 1080p 29.97 High Quality.
Saved and burned to DVD.  I also did the same choosing AVCHD Presets: MP4 – H264 1920x1080p 30. Saved and burned to DVD
Let us clarify. When the end result is "...burned to DVD" in either case, are saying that you take your saved file to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc or AVCHD on DVD disc, using another Premiere Elements 11 project on Windows 7 64 bit.
My post numbered 1, contained the step by step for taking your 1080p60 Timeline directly to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc.
If you are going to introduce intermediates in your workflow (Timeline content saved to file and then burn to disc), then I would offer the following scheme
    a. 1080p60 project preset (project 1)
    b. 1080p60 Timeline saved to file via
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVCHD
with presets = MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30 (and then under the Advanced Button/Video Tab, customize the export settings for 1080p60 instead of 1080p30)
    c. Import that back into Premiere Elements 1080p60 project (project 2) and burn to disc DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, AVCHD on DVD disc, or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc..
This is another alternative interpretation to your saved and burned to DVD.....in one project, you are doing two different exports...one to a file saved to the hard drive and after than the burn to disc (be it DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc, AVCHD format on DVD disc, or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc). If this is the case, there is no "intermediate".
There used to be the discussion about HDV to DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc - whether HDV file should be imported into the project as source or whether the user should downsize the HDV to DV widescreen in the camera before import into a DV Widescreen Premiere Elements project. As we getting into this type of question with your 1080p60 to DV widescreen?
Please review and consider. And, then please let me know if any of the above addresses your considerations.
    Thanks.

  • Satellite L775-119 - Upgrade with blu-ray drive?

Had my L775-119 for a few weeks, and it's going great, really pleased but am just wondering if it's possible, sometime in the future to upgrade the DVD RW Drive to a Blu ray re-writer?

    Hello
Im not Satellite L775 owner but I think it should be possible because some L770/L775 models are delivered with blu-ray drive so generally speaking it seems that the notebook support such drives.
But you can get an exact answer from an authorized service provider. The guys can order a compatible drive for you and install it if you are not familiar with notebook part exchange.
Do you know how to contact an authorized service provider?

Hi I have a 2011 modell of macbook pro

Nothing wrong with having half an optical drive inside your Mac. No, wait. Two-thirds, actually. After all, it is no longer needed for OS maintenance since the days of the downloadable Lions.
Why? Well, if it can do it, you will be able to read and write CDs. Read and write DVDs. Read raw Blu-Ray content. OS X does not and apparently will never support Blu-Ray decoding. For some strange reason Steve and successors have decided that Blu-Ray is kaput and not worth pursuing, even though Apple is a member of the Blu-Ray Disc Association. So if you aim to watch BU movies, you will have to resort to illegal or gray-area software that may or may not work all the time. Same can be said for burning BU writable media (and hear your wallet say OUCH). But to each his own.
Me? I have an LG Super Multi BU burner on an external FW800/USB3/E-SATA enclosure, that can read or write any shape, form or kind of optical media known to man.

  • Blu-ray optical drive no longer plays Blu-ray discs. Will play all other discs

I have a HP Pavilion Elite hpe-510y desktop pc. HP product # bv538aa#aba.  Optical drive has stopped playing and recognizing Blu-ray discs. All other discs play fine. I didn't notice this problem for awhile because I don't always play Blu-ray discs on my PC. I don't know if their was an update or if the optical drive has just gone bad. I am not sure if its a hardware or software problem. Has anyone else had this problem with this model. Would appreciate any help you can give me in this matter. Thank You. Dennis

    Dennis, welcome to the forum.
I suggest uninstalling the drive.  You can do this by going into Control Panel / Device Manager / DVD/CD-ROM drives.  Right click on your drive and select "Uninstall".  Then, reboot the computer.  Windows will indentify it and reinstall it.
Please click the "Thumbs up + button" if I have helped you and click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved.
