Upgrade to Discoverer 10.1.2

We've been running Discoverer Admin/Desktop 9.0.2 and Discoverer Viewer 9.0.4 for 4 years with few problems. We also run Portal 9.0.4.
We don't use Plus very much and we don't use Discoverer Portlet Provider, although we might experiment with the Portlet Provider when we get to 10.1.2.
We're thinking of upgrading Discoverer to 10.1.2.0.2, which might also be 10.2.2.1. Oracle's versioning is confusing to me. In the end, I think that Discoverer gets
to 10.1.2.48.18.
Has Discoverer 10.1.2.48.18 been a stable version for anyone who stopped there and didn't apply the patchsets that take Discoverer (and Application Server) to
10.1.2.2 or to 10.1.2.3?
--- Steve

Hi Steve,
At this point in time, 10.1.2.3 has been out for a while + Oracle has released three Discoverer cumulative patches on top of that so I guess I wouldn't consider it "the leading edge". Discoverer 10g is fairly mature now, so maybe I would consider it the most stable (not perfect, but most stable) (if that is what you are looking for)
In the 10.1.2.1 (10.1.2.48.18) time frame, Oracle would release one-off patches and then if you ran into an issue they would "merge" several one-off patches. That is what patch 5381031 is, it is the merging of several one-off patches and it did correct quite a few nasty issues that are listed in doc 367389.1
After 10.1.2.2 patchset was released, Oracle moved to bundling several one-off patches together and releasing them as "cumulative patches". The difference here is that the patches are run through some QA and include fixes that most customers are likely to encounter.
The problem that you may run into is that if you encounter an issue the requires a fix, then Oracle will tell you to patch to the latest patchset and cumulative patch (if it is already fixed there) or they will tell you to patch to that point anyway since the "timer" has run out for back porting fixes to 10.1.2.1 and 10.1.2.2 (you get a year). In other words, new fixes only go onto the latest patchset. Of course, you can "cross that bridge when you come to it"
The 10.1.2.2 patchset and the 10.1.2.3 patchset include all the fixes in 5381031. Patch 5381031 is a good one to apply if you decided to stay on 10.1.2.1 or start with 10.1.2.1

Steve

    Hi Padmanabh
How are you doing the upgrade?
Personally, because you have to use a new weblogic server anyway I would install a clean 11g and then re-apply any preferences. With that done I would export the entire EUL from 10g and import it into the clean 11g. You'll be up and running in no time at all.
There is no need to upgrade the EUL as it is the same in both 10g R2 and 11g.

  • I've upgraded the Discoverer from release 4 to 10.2.0.3

    Hi guys,
I've upgraded the Discoverer from release 4 to 10.2.0.3 on two of my test systems.
the difference between the two test system is that one is SSL enable and the other one is not.
On the test system that is not SSL enabled users can access Discoverer via EBS fine but
on the tests system that has SSL enabled users cant so now they have to go directly to
the Discoverer link to access it. I've logged an SR with Oracle and they told me to edit the ssl.conf file
for the Discoverer side which I did and I placed the file directories and the locations of the certificates in that ssl.conf.
How can I get Discoverer to through EBS when SSL is enabled.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Firstly, you need to check that the ICX: Discoverer Launcher system profile has the correct https url to launch Discoverer.

    Sabra,
Not sure exactly what this might be... there could be an issue there.
Please make sure that you review the upgrade.log. Are there any errors / warnings?
Also, you might wanna peek the Metalink Note:262623.1 - Master Note for OracleAS Portal Upgrade Issues, where you'll find some nice things where to start looking at.
Later you may wanna open a Service Request into the Oracle Support.
    I hope it helps...

  • Discoverer upgrade to 10g

    Hi,
Please assist me with some of the ff issues I experienced post my upgrade to discoverer 10g from discoverer vs 3.1.
    1. The icons get greyed out after a while with working on discoverer plus. Any ideas why this happens and what is the fix?
    2. Is there any way I can default the users e-mail address to the user logged in in discoverer viewer when they click on the "send as e-mail" option? Currently the user has to type in his mail address and recipient and cc's.
    3. I believe the File Save as and File Send as functions are no longer available in discoverer plus 10g. Hence the user cannot save a file to the file system. Is there any word on this coming back sooooon or not at all?
    4. One user at my User test requested for batch scheduling of workbooks and exporting these scheduled workbooks to a specific directory that is accesible to multi users. He requires this to be done using the comand prompt. Please assist with the details on how to do this?
    Many thanks
    Saliha Mohammed

    Hi Saliha
Which version of 10g are you talking about? Are you referring to 10g R1 (9.0.4) or 10g R2 (10.1.2)?
With regards to your icons being grayed out this is an indication that you are out of memory on either the client or the server. Even though Plus and Viewer are web-based applications, the amount of memory available on the client does make a significant difference. I used to say that 512 Mb was needed but I have personally come across performance issues at a client whose machines have that amount of memory. My own laptop, which has 2Gb of RAM has no such issues. I will therefore be recommending a minimum of 1Gb from now on with an optimum of 2Gb. If you can possibly afford it, your new Plus machines should have at least 1Gb and be capable of being expanded to 2Gb should the need arise. Of course, if you can get 2Gb to begin with you will have far fewer issues.
With regards to the batch scheduling of workbooks and exporting these scheduled workbooks to a specific directory you need to use a third-party scheduler along with Discoverer's command-line utility. My new Discoverer 10g Handbook describes this in great detail on pages 495 to 509, which as you will appreciate is far too much detail to post here.

  • Upgrade Oracle 9iAS Discoverer Plus & Viewer

I need to upgrade Oracle Discoverer Administrator & Desktop edition to release 4.1.45.08.00.
This release also upgrades the EUL version. I connect to the EUL throught the Oracle 9iAS release 1.0.2.2.1.
I need to know what patch I must apply to the Discoverer Plus & Viewer.
Thanks a lot and sorry about my english.

    Hi,
Check that the ICX system profiles are set correctly for your Discoverer configuration. In particular the ICX: Discoverer Launcher and ICX: Discoverer Viewer Launcher system profiles.
When IE displays an error is the URL displayed in the browser a correct Disco URL?

  • Discoverer Server Upgrade

    Subject: Discoverer Server upgrade
    Hi,
A question on Discoverer Server upgrade. Currently we are running out Discoverer server and Datamart on the same 9i database. But now we want to move on Discoverer server to a different 10g database but keep our datamart on the old 9i DB. I was wondering if this is possible and if the work that has already being done in Discoverer will work once the discoverer server is moved to a new database. Currently we are using 3i but plan on upgrading our discoverer version to 10 g later.
Please let me know if I didn't explain the scenario properly.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
You won't be able to use Discoverer 3i with a 10g database.

  • Upgrading Discoverer from 4.1.48,06, should it be 10.1.2?

    Hi There,
i'me currently looking into the prospect of upgrading our Discoverer, hopefully to 10.1.2, therefore i have a few questions that i would be grateful if someone could help me with.
We are currently running on Application Version 11.5.7, although we have applied Family packs HR FP K and FIN FP G, we are running on a database of version 9.2.0.4.0
We currently user Desktop, Viewer and the Web-based version of Discoverer.
    1) What benefits to the user community are there in upgrading to this version?
    2) Anybody any idea what documents i can look at that will tell me if the database version etc is compatable with Discoverer 10.1.2.
    3) Should i be upgrading to a different version?
    4) What direction is oracle going, i have read their going to make everything Java-based, is this still the case?
    5) Are oracle going to continue their support of desktop? If not, when does it become desupported? I have had conflicting answers to this, so a difinately YES/NO would be great.
    Kind Regards
    Ross

To reiterate Steve's point on support for Discoverer Desktop, the single word answer is YES - Desktop is supported and shall continue to be supported in the future.
Also, there is one additional feature in Desktop that we do not yet have in Plus: 'Import SQL'. Ok, two more, if you also count 'Images in Titles'.

  • Discoverer 10G Plus Questions

    Hi
We're in the process of upgrading from Discoverer 4 (APPS EUL) to 10G. We're doing away with the Desktop client. Most users will be given access to Discoverer Viewer and other users will be given access to Plus. We have recently upgraded or DEV instance and there are a few "questions" (i.e. gripes) that users have come back to me with:
    1) Do all reports have to be stored on the database to allow them to be accessed by Plus or Viewer? Can only the 10G client version open files from a local hardrive or shared network drive?
    2) Can only one report be open at any given time with Plus or Viewer? In client it is possible to have 2 reports open at the same time to facilitate easier comparisons.
    3) NULL values are still showing the word "NULL" even though in Tools Options we have set it to show blank, existing reports are still using the NULL value.
I'd very much appreciate feedback on any of the 3 points above.
    Thanks.
    Paul.

    Hi paul,
Its a good idea to upgrade from 4i to 10g 4i is no more used by many and their are some issues or bugs with it.The latest version is 11g which has been released 1 week back.If not go with 10g version available.
    1) Do all reports have to be stored on the database to allow them to be accessed by Plus or Viewer? Can only the 10G client version open files from a local hardrive or shared network drive?Yes they have to stored in the database so any ened user can access them from plus or viewer.
Can only one report be open at any given time with Plus or Viewer? In client it is possible to have 2 reports open at the same time to facilitate easier comparisons.Yes,if the reports are registered as different reports and if the end user has access to both the reports thn he can open and compare it OR if both reports are in same workbook as different sheets than its easy to view or compare.
NULL values are still showing the word "NULL" even though in Tools Options we have set it to show blank, existing reports are still using the NULL value. It should show blank, might be some problem. In discoverer 10g i think you will not find this issues.
    Hope this helps you.
    Best Wishes,
    kranthi.

If you are not planning to use Oracle AS 10g features (like Discoverer Connection Management, Discoverer Portlet Provider, and Oracle Single Sign On, ..etc), you can choose to install Oracle Business Intelligence Server 10g Release 2. Oracle Business Intelligence Server 10g Release 2 is available on a separate standalone CD and includes Discoverer Server 10g, Discoverer Plus 10g, and Discoverer Viewer 10g.

  • Oracle discoverer ver 9.0.2.39.02 - Error While using  discoverer plus

I have installed oracle 9i discoverer ver 9.0.2.39.02 and while tyring to use Discoverer Plus (http://ip:port/discoverer/plus)
I get error when creaating a workbook using workbook wizard, if i go thru the steps 1 to 10 It just does'nt do anything when i click Finish. At the same time
If i click Finish on the Table layout screen immediately after selecting the items it generates the worksheet
what could be the reason for me unable to generate the worksheet.
Create / edit Business Privilege is granted to the user.
    can anybody help me.
    Thanks

    Hi
But Desktop is not the product that you reported the error on, you said that Plus was giving you the problem.
Desktop generally has far fewer issues that Plus because it is a client-based tool and I would expect it to work fine in Desktop.
Have you ever had 9.0.2 Plus working as you describe or have you recently installed it? Either way, I strongly recommend upgrading your Discoverer Plus to the version in my previous reply.
By the way, I think you will find that most people rapidly got off 9.0.2 as soon as 9.0.4 came out which was 10g Release 1. If you look on my blog: http://learndiscoverer.blogspot.com/ you will see a couple of surveys that were conducted earlier this year. The top one indicates that only 4% of Discoverer sites are using 9.0.2. Of those I would suggest most will be on the 54 release which really was quite stable.
You will fnd it really hard to get help if you stay on the 39 release because there are so few folks around who have it installed.
    Best wishes
    Michael
