Upgrade to Hybrid Harddrive on m7-1015dx

I want to upgrade my harddrive on my m7-1015dx laptop. In the process of installing the new harddrive and attempting to install windows, i get error saying "Windows setup could not configure windows to run on computer's hardware." I believe the issue is the BIOS setting for harrdrive but with the Insydeh20 bios, it is not possible to change the BIOS configuration. Is there anyway to change the BIOS on this laptop and/or get this harddrive to work?
This question was solved.

  • Upgrading ram and harddrive before turning on macbook for the first time?

Hello, I'm totally new to the world of Macs. I am for sure going to purchase a Macbook, but I feel it might be better to upgrade ram and harddrive through third party. I have never upgraded ram or a harddrive, but it seems easy enough after watching the video at macworld and reading instructions. My question is:
Should I install the ram and harddrive before I turn on the macbook for the first time? Would this make things any easier? Would this be a bad thing to do?
I plan on ordering both the macbook and the ram and harddrive on the same day. Which is basically why I was wondering.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to the discussions!
I agree fully with Ned. You will want to power it up and run the setup and even do your data transfer and maybe even install a program or two before doing any upgrades at all.
    Why?
Updating the OS tests your Airport or ethernet connection.
Migrating data over by FireWire or USB tests those connections.
Installing programs from CD will test out the CD drive.
You will also get a feel for the baseline performance and have something to compare it to once you do those upgrades.

  • Upgrading to new harddrive on gateway notebook/laptop without any disk

I'm wanting to upgrade to a 1.0 TB WD10JPVX hard drive on my NE56R41U gateway laptop it didn't come with any disk did my back like suppose to do did another systems backup on usb drive I also have everything backup on a 1.0TB WD drive the system came
with windows 8 on ive upgraded to 8.1 via ms and then to 8.1 pro via download version (have so many ?'s )been wanting to make a dvd version of 8.1pro for backup what is needed for installing this new drive without any disk tried using usb drive but
got no where it also was saying drive is locked go unlock it try again can I get pointed in a direction any one want to be a buddy and answer the hundreds of ?'s and yes I know don't buy without a os systems disk ever again

    Hi,
I just would like to confirm with you if you would like backup your system and restore it to the new 1TB harddrive.
    If so, check following steps:
Note that this will format and repartition the new disk and restore the volumes contained in the image. This will restore the OS, applications and data contained in the critical volumes (volumes required for Windows to run). You can restore
the data on the other partitions on the disk from a file backup of required data from the old disk. I am assuming you have a file backup of your data as well.
    1) Create a System Image backup to the USB drive. When prompted to create a ‘System Repair’ disk, do so.
    2) Shutdown the computer and remove the hard drive power and SATA connectors from your original Windows 7 hard drive and any additional internal hard drives.
    3) Connect the power and SATA connector to the new hard drive. At this point this should be your only internal hard drive connected to the computer’s motherboard.
    4) Boot from the ‘System Repair’ disc.
    5) Verify the keyboard input method and click ‘Next’.
    6) Select the ‘Restore your computer using a system image that you created’ option located in the lower left and click ‘Next’.
    7) A scan for system images that are on your USB drive will begin. At completion of the scan you will have the option to ‘Use the latest available system image’ or ‘Select a system image’. Choose the recommended option and use the latest available system
    image and click ‘Next’.
    8) Choose additional restore options: Note: The ‘Format and repartition disks’ option will be check marked but disabled/grayed out. Click ‘Next’.
    9) The ‘Your computer will be restored from the following system image:’ information will be displayed. Click ‘Finish’.
    10) Re-image Your Computer prompt. You will now see a pop up with the following message: All data to be restored will be formatted and replaced with the layout and data in the system image. Are you sure you want to continue? Click ‘Yes’.
    11) Windows will now start restoring the image to the new hard drive.
    12) At the completion of the image restoration your computer will reboot, sit back and wait for Windows to start and then logon as you normally do, then remove the System Repair disc.
    13) You may be prompted to restart the computer to apply changes. Restart the computer.

  • Weird pop sound after upgrading ram and harddrive

I randomly got the pop sound after I upgraded my mac mini core 2 duo to 320 gb 5400 rpm harddrive and 4 GB ram (2GBx2GB).
The sound is like a plastic click (similar sound when I the wireless mice hit the aluminum wireless keyboard) and it's quite loud.
Everything works fine except the pop sound ,Im a bit worried.
First I thought it was the hard drive problem so I copied the 3 GB music from the CD to the newly 320 GB internal HD with no problem at all ,no pop sound or click sound.
Do you have any idea where the sound come from?
    Please help

I will try to swap the 80Gb back .
If the clicking sound disappear then it's the HD.
No, that's not the best way to test it. Leaving the new drive in the system, try and copy a large file to or from it. What that will do is keep the drive busy for the duration of the file copy, and let you listen for the noise. If the noise continues while the copy is taking place, and particularly if it increases in frequency, it would suggest a problem with the drive that is not a simple matter of self-parking - in other words, would be suggestive of a faulty drive that you would likely be best not to trust at all (in fact return it).
If the sound disappears while the copy takes place, then it suggests the noise is the self-parking activity, in which case as much as the noise is odd and even disturbing, it wouldn't suggest a fault or any real indication of imminent failure.
It should be said that many drives used in early minis made the most alarming sounds, yet are still in regular use with no unusual failure rate. Indeed, one of the manufacturers concerned (Seagate) indicated at one point that over time the sounds would change and grow less prolific, which in my experienced turned out to be the case. In your situation therefore, I'd continue to use the drive, ensuring I had an adequate backup routine of course, and see what happens!

  • Upgrading ram and harddrive cost.

how much does it cost to update a 1 gig ram & 80 gigharddrive macbook, to a 3 gig ram, 320 to 500 gig harddrive macbook? and wat do u suggest?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231135 $39.99 2X2GB shipped (if the C2D model you will be limited to 3GB but might as well get the 4GB). If it is the CD model you are limited to 2GB and shouldn't buy this one you should buy http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148086 $16.99 shipped 2X1GB.
I'm still not entirely sure which one you have as if you had the blackbook wouldn't it have come with a 120 GB HDD? Anyway, is it a 2 GHz CD or 2GHz C2D CPU? That would make the difference.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145227 Hitachi 5k320. $69.99 shipped. I paid way more for this in October even with the rebate.

  • Best HD Upgrade Strategy?

I have a MacPro ("Early 2008") 2.8 GHz Quad Core 45-nm Intel Xeon E5462 2008 with 8GB RAM. I am running it as an office server with Mountain Lion Server. Two years ago I upgraded the two harddrives to 3TB each ... but at the time, did not install the RAID. I use a utiltiy to clone one drive every week or so (for "back-up"). I now have more than 2.2TB on the drive (cloned when I do the back-up) ... including files and system, etc.
I would really like to increase my storage space to last a while and reinstall the RAID. Two 6TB drives would be great.
Questions: Best hardware options for this? Other recommendations (SSD for system)? What is a specific process for migrating to new config (i.e. to re-establish RAID, keep users, preferences, permissions, etc.
Alot of info, I know. I appreciate the advcie/help.

Avoid the Apple hardware RAID card. For one thing it does not support 2.5TB and up.
Want to stay iwth mirroring, look at SoftRAID.com
Of course SSD is fine for system.
Seagate Enterprise drives for RAID, NAS or software arrays.
    Seagate ST1000NM0033 Enterprise Constellation ES.3
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A47FPL8/
    SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 128GB
    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7TE120BW/dp/B00E3 W15P0/
One issue with 3TB, often those are 'green' not 7200 rpm and not suited to arrays, let alone hardware RAID.

  • Using multiple harddrives for one project

I'm about to purchase a new iMac and Final Cut Studio, and I have a question about harddrive setup. Currently, I have two external 320 GB harddrives I'm planning on using, and the iMac will come with an internal drive of 320 GB. This should be enough space to fit the estimated 468 GB of footage I'll have (36 hrs * 13 GB/hr for HDV is my calculation), but I've heard that there can be problems splitting a project across multiple harddrives. Should I upgrade the internal harddrive on the iMac to 750 GB so I can fit the project all on one drive?
    Thanks very much!

    Listen to what David said,
don't use your internal disk as scratch disk, it will slow down your system, put it at an unnecessary risk .
Are your drives FW connected or USB? If the case is the latter use your drives as back up drives and for more efficiency get at least FW400 drives and in the future do take into consideration bigger drives, 320 GB when editing video on a regular basis is peanuts.

  • Invalid serial  number CS2 Photoshop upgrade?

    mmail@morninmail
invalid serial number when trying to upgrade Photoshop CS2  Harddrive crashed, trying to reload. Could not unlock.

In all your responses not once did you give the actual error message it displayed.  Was it "Invalid Serial Number"?  If so, in what dialog did it display that message?  Maybe even a screen grab would be helpful to show it.
I know you've been around the block with support, and they're really the ones you're supposed to be able to get help from, but if you're going to ask a question here and expect more than sympathy, how about providing:
    1.  The exact sequence of steps you're going through.
    2.  What goes wrong.
    3.  The exact wording of any and all error messages.
    4.  Info from the Windows logs.
It may be that someone here will recognize a problem they've solved and say something like, "Oh, that problem needs you to use the licensing repair tool" or "you need to run the installer as Administrator" or similar.
At this point you just haven't provided any information about what's wrong.

  • Changing APM/S.M.A.R.T setting for my harddrive

    Hello everyone,
After 3 years I upgraded my internal harddrive to a Samsung HM160HC 160GB. It works like a charm but there seems to be a problem with read/write head changing from parked to ready (and vice versa). I've read some articles about this "clicking" sound the drives make... Under Linux you have tools such as hdparm or smartctl (available via fink) that help. I've tried them using a live cd of Ubuntu and those noises disappear.
What do these programms do? You are able to set the APM value of your harddrive by hand (using hdparm) and/or set the SMART automatic offline test to enable (using smartctl). As I've said above smartctl is available for OSX but the operation is not supported under OSX
Beside the noise the drive makes those useless head parkings reduce the lifetime of the drive drastically. My LoadCycleCount for my new drive (less than a month old) is already >18000 (normally harddrive do about 200.000 before their lifetime ends).
So how can I change some APM/SMART settings under OSX (and eventually make them permanent) so my harddrive lives longer than 2 months?
Here is a article which has a working solution for linux. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problemwith_hard_driveclicking

Just like to say thanks for this neat little app. I was experiencing the clunking sounds on my MBP. Tried Declunk first, but didn't think it was a very good solution. Further testing under WinXp with Smartmon and Hdparm and I was able to eliminate the issue (hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda). Problem was, that it doesn't update the firmware, so after a power cycle the HDD will go back to its aggressive power saving settings and clunk away. OSX alternatives to hdparm are pretty much non-existent, APM Tuner X is no longer supported. Thats when I found your post. Downloaded and installed (although I had to sudo mkdir /usr/local/bin and cp the hdapm there) CLUNK GONE! Wish I had have known about your app sooner as I think my cycles for a two year old Seagate are over 100,000!!!

If you fo to New Egg's website, and read the comments posted by the folks who have actually bought OCZ drives from there, they're rather horrendous. Mushkin - whose RAM I hold in the highest of regards - also faired poorly.
The bottom line is, *anything* with a SandForce (I call it sandbox) controller can only enter this household for free...
Apart from that, my big issue with OCZ is physical fit, since some of their drives are a pinch wider and don't sit properly in the ThinkPad's caddy.
I've had zero problems with Crucial which is more than I can say about any other SSD manufacturer, and that's why I'm recomending them...
    Obviously, YMMV.

  • Upgrade options mid-2012 mbp

If I want to make my laptop go a little faster, what are my upgrade options? What are the differences between upgrading RAM v. harddrive to SSD for instance?

    kristin268,
since your computer is not yet two years old, and given your typical tasks, I think that your computer doesn’t need to be replaced; upgrading the RAM and getting a SSD will be far less expensive than getting a new computer. The price of RAM will depend upon where you purchase it; for example, OWC’s price for 8 GB can be found here (and their RAM comes with a lifetime advance replacement warranty). The price of a SSD depends upon its manufacturer, its model, and its capacity. In my case, I put a 512 GB Samsung 840 PRO in my MacBook Pro; I chose it because of its five-year warranty and its performance characteristics. There are other SSDs that have  higher capacities, but not many SSDs come with five-year warranties. (I interpret the warranty length as being indicative of a manufacturer’s expectation of low rates of product replacement during the warranty period.)

  • Need recomandation regarding hardware upgrade

    Hello,
    I bought
HP Pavilion dv8-1080ea Notebook (18.4-inch Display, Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Core Processor i7-... from Amazon. But before buying I went to PC World and asked the techguys consultant there about upgrading the memory from 4gb to 8gb and upgrading the two harddrives from 320 gb to 500 gb each. He said we dont sell the memory of that category and we dont have that hard drives either. But he said they can put the parts in the laptop if I buy from some other source and bring it to them. But we will not guarantee about the hardware or  your laptops after fixing the parts.
So my question from seniors on this forum is that if I go for the upgrade and buy the parts on my own and pass it to Techguys available at store should it be ok. if ok, please recomand me the  brands to buy the memory and harddrive. Your suggestions are always welcome ...
    Thanks and regards
    Austinn

    Where to buy the memory
    Hard drive to consider
Yes the above items will work in your laptop just fine.
So based on the above pricing you would get $500 in the memory and 2 x $120 or $240 in the hard drives for a total investment of $740US plus whatever the tech guys are charging for installation (should not be much). Very expensive. You could resell your 4 gigs of memory and 2 x 320 gig hard drives but would be lucky to recoup $250 of the $740 so $490 net which is still very expensive.
I have found no reason to upgrade any computer I have to 8 gigs of memory. I could see doing it only if I were doing heavy Photoshop work or video production work. If you do that kind of stuff, then you are making money with your computer and the upgrade is worth it. You can maybe find 8 gigs of DDR3-10600 for a bit less, but not much less and it pays to buy from Crucial because they ship it fast and have a very good return policy and a great record of customer satisfaction. As far as the hard drives, if you need the space you pretty much have to do it. The drives I have linked above are likely faster and better-performing than what you have. Make sure to burn the recovery DVD(s) from the HP Backup program then you can reinstall your system on the new drive(s). Good luck.

  • Upgrading Leopard to Snow Leopard to run on Yosemite

OK...kind of an odd question, but need help accomplishing it.
My MacBook just bit the dust, (blackscreen of death) and I had an external running Leopard 10.5.8 OS for my audio programs.  I never upgraded to 10.6.8 since my hardware couldn't handle it.
Now I am looking into a brand new MacBook pro that is running Yosemite.  I saw there is a way to run a Snow Leopard server version to run 10.6.8 on this OS.
Is there a way to upgrade the external harddrive from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8 via this new machine or any other way?  Besides finding an old machine that had 10.5 on it originally, and could be upgraded to 10.6.
Also, can some one explain running a server version of the 10.6.8 OS, and if it would be suitable for me.
    Thanks in advance

Since I got no replies, found a refurbed MacBook Pro from 2010 that has Leopard on it but can be upgraded to Yosemite.  Wanted to go new, but I know this way it will work and I won't lose any data from older OSX.
