Upgrade to intel - will plugins still work?

Okay, this may sound stupid...
I'm using Logic 7.2 on a dual 1ghz G4 MDD and thinking of upgrading to an intel mac.I understand Logic 7.2 works on intels, but I've heard it runs rather slow. Is that true? I'm okay to buy Logic 8 if that's the best route.
My REAL question is, will my many many plugins (many free ones) still work on an intel? Do plugins (au and some vst wrapped by FXpansion's vst to au converter) generally work on intels? Does Logic 8 work okay with old plug ins?
I think I have over 120 of them so checking every single one will be a major time-consuming pain. I'm not sure how the intel architecture works and how easy it is to crossover to intel with an audio "studio" built up over the years on PPC.
I wonder if I should just get a second hand G5 dual or the last incarnation of the G5 iMac (for the quietness) and have an easier, if slower, mac life.
Apologies if I sound like an idiot - I often am.

It's not.

No. Actually, it runs faster, because it's running on a much faster machine. But you can't just copy it over, it has to be installed fresh.

Well, maybe, but that's your preference. Logic 8 has some nice features, but Logic 7 will work fine.

Most of them - but you HAVE to install them again, with the latest universal binary version (UB) When a plug-in is installed, it installs different code depending on which platform you're running on. The installer (usually) decides what components need to be installed.

You can't mix and match. When you go to an Intel machine, ALL plug-ins and Logic itself need to be installed again, with the latest UB version.
I think I have over 120 of them so checking every single one will be a major time-consuming pain.
Maybe so, but that's the price of upgrading. Maybe now is a good time to abandon some of those plug-ins which you really don't use

It's a day or two of pain, but then you'll be much happier. Kinda like going to the dentist.

I don't think it's wise to buy old technology. You're going to regret it, as we're already seeing that new applications are being released which require an Intel machine and/or Leopard. Snow Leopard, the next OS, will only run on an Intel machine, for example.

You don't. Perfectly sensible questions. Hope my answers help.

  • Upgrade CS4 to CS5 - Will CS4 Still Work?

I have CS4 Web Premium on a Windows Vista X64 machine. I have downloaded trial of CS5 Web Premium and everything seems to work fine (i.e. both versions are running on this computer and seem to work fine).
My question is: If I upgrade to CS5, will CS4 still work?
The main reason I ask is that I have onOne software Plug-in suite 4.5 running on Photoshop CS4. onOne is charging $149 to upgrade to a version that works on CS5. I still want to be able to use onOne, but, at this point, not enough to pay their upgrade price.
I appreciate anyone that can offer some input.
    Thanks, Wayne

    Bob,
I guess my real question was what would happen to CS4 when I activated CS5. Considering the licensing practices of software companies today, I wasn't sure. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

  • Will mail still work on my power mac G5 after icloud?

I have an intel macbook pro that I suppose I need to upgrade so I can use icloud.  But will mail still work on my Power Mac G5 that can not be upgraded past Leopard?

You should be able to enter the email server settings manually:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html
This page assumes Snow Leopard: probably Leopard, where Mail is similar, should work but I can't confirm it. The key item is the ability to use SSL, which MobileMe doesn't.

I bought Adobe Acrobat 7.0 professional a few years before, Will it still work? I have the serial number and CD.
Or do I have to pay monthly subscription to convert pdf to word, to use pdf reader etc?

You may or may not be able to install Acrobat 7.0 on a modern operating system.
Also, you can no longer activate Acrobat 7.0 with your original serial number; you need to download the installer and get a special serial number from this website https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/creative-suite-2-activation-end-life.ht ml

    Thanks.

There is no such thing as Windows for Mac. Windows is Windows and you can install it on a Windows computer or on an Apple computer. Once installed it will work until you remove it.

If I install VM Fusion or Parallels, does Windows run all the time? How does that affect computer performance? and how much do I need to worry about hard drive corruption?
Current versions of Fusion and Parallels are compatible with Yosemite. Both are applications which you only run when you want to run Windows within them. As such, there's no effect on computer performance when they're not in use. Like any other software, there is some additional load on your Mac when both Windows and the Mac OS are running together, but any noticeable effect depends on what each is being expected to do and what resources (e.g. available RAM and the number of CPU cores) you can devote to each.
I think there's less chance of HD corruption with a VM than there is with running Windows natively on the Mac in Boot Camp. Consider that, with a VM, you can create Snapshots of the state of your VM at a given time, and then, if something goes wrong (virus, malware, software installations), you can simply restore the Snapshot in a matter of seconds and eliminate the problems in the process. Moreover you can make a backup copy of the entire VM file, and replace a later version if you wish. Also consider that you can assign, say, 100GB of HD space to the VM, but the actual space devoted to the VM is only what's actually used; as more is needed, more is made available and Windows can't tell the difference. So, for example, my Win 7 Pro VM has an 80 GB virtual HD but only takes up 45 GB on my SSD, and that's with XP Mode in VPC installed inside it.
Microsoft no longer supports XP, though virus signature updates are still being issued. But MS has installed a pop-up message about EOL that won't go away (it's installed with KB2934207). Even if you remove that KB in Add and Remove Software, the pop-up continues. But if you have a Snapshot or a backup which is prior to it's original installation, you can skip installing KB2934207, and suppress it's reappearance on a Software Update list.

  • Will my iphone 5 still work if I unregister it with Apple and will iMessage still work without it being registered?

Can anyone out there help me. If I unregister my iphone 5 will it still work and will it still be able to receive and send iMessages? Will this mess up iTunes?

If you turn off iMessage, then you can't send or receive iMessages... in case that wasn't apparent.
The problem is the android users who did not turn off iMessage on their iPhones before they switched to something else.  They need to fix that. If they don't, then your only option is to turn off iMessage or forcibly send the messages as SMS messages.

I have an older Hitachi widescreen 1080p  TV that has a DVI input, no HDMI input.  Is there an adapter and if so will it still work?

As HDMI is the only supported method there will no guarantee with any converter.
DVI doesn't tranfer audio so you would have to either go through optical to connect speakers, or use a DAC in connection with analogue speakers.
Also, unless the TV is HDCP compliant you will be unable to play protected content (ie iTunes, Netflix)

  • If I buy a Iphone5 in the UK, (unlocked) will it still work in Colombia?

    Hi, can anybody help me?
If I buy a Iphone5 in the UK, (unlocked) will it still work in Colombia on their local networks?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Well, in that case you will need to get it unlocked in Colombia, and most carriers will NOT unlock until after you have fullfilled your obligations (ie length of contract etc). Check with the carriers to see what their unlocking policies are.
If you plan to go to the UK quite often, then buying ther unlocked UK phone might be an option, even if you ignore the fact that if you need service, you will need to go to the UK to get it serviced. And then there is the issue of LTE. So far no carrier in Latin America (except TelCel in Mexico) offers LTE.

  • If i buy an iPhone in the USA will it still work when i move to Canada?, If i buy an iPhone in the USA will it still work when i move to Canada?

If i buy an iphone in the USA will it still work when i move back to Canada?

You would probably want to look at a factory unlocked iPhone so you do not have to use a contract with a US carrier.  And look at the network standards being used, in the US iPhones are CDMA (verizon and Sprint) and GSM (AT&T).  What are the carriers in Canada using?  If majority, or the carrier in your location are GSM then you should look at the GSM iPhone.  Also check warranty and applicability in Canada...iPhone warranties are supposed to be valid only in the country of purchase.
AppleCare+ is available in the US and Canada but, again, be sure you can transfer the coverage to Canada.

How do I get water out of my Mac book and will it still work?

You can't and it won't, it's done for.
Take the hard drive out, use a SATA to USB adapter cable and install MacDrive in Windows to read files or use Migration Assistance on your new Mac to transfer apps and files over.
