You can not install iOS 5. It is no longer signed by Apple. You can only install the current version of iOS. For a 3GS, that's 6.1.3.
However... if you have 4.2.1 on your phone, odds are it is not a 3GS, it is a 3G. If that's the case, you've reached the end of the road for that. It can not run anything higher than 4.2.1.

Since I upgraded to iOS 7.1.2, new Outlook calendar and contact items will not sync to/from my iOS devices - I am not using the iCloud, just sync'ing direct to/from laptop. Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks for the question. If the iCloud tab (and other tabs) are greyed out, and you are unable to tap on them, it sounds like Restrictions have been enabled on your device. Specifically, the Restriction titled “Allow Changes: Accounts”.

Upgraded to iOS 6; No WiFi on iPhone 4S and now iPad 3

Upgraded to iOS 6 earlier today at work. Used their WiFi to update. Came home and now no WiFi. I've tried changing the SSID and changed from WEP to WPA and then back to WPA. After doing all those changes still not connecting.
I know some topics have said to delete the Safari history or whatever. Tried that and that didn't work.
I just updated my iPad 3 to iOS 6 and now it won't connect to my WiFi. I have a Netgear WGT624 v3 with the latest firmware. This is an older router but ALL my devices have worked with no issues until this update was released and install on 2 of my devices.
I still have an iPad, iPad 2, 2 other iPhone 4's and a 3GS to update and I'm not doing that until I have my WiFi working on the iPhone 4S and iPad 3.
What is the problem Apple? Its going to be weeks before they fix this issue.

Found a solution to my problem.
I'm using the Netgear WGT624 v3 router with the latest firmware. I searched online for Netgear issues with iOS 6 and found this link.

Basicallt I downgraded the firmware of my router and now the WiFi works. Just a temp fix until Apple address the issue. Then I will try to upgrade back to the newest firmware.

I just got the iBooks update and that fixed the problem, except the book covers look like they were done in a government printing office.

When I turned on my iPad this morning, it prompted me to upgrade to IOS 7.1. I did it and all went as usual until the iPad promptd to plug into iTunes. I've done that but it is now stuck in that mode. Hw do I complete the upgrade?

I plugged it to a laptop, then the message on the laptop stated "iPod is in Recovery Mode" Nothing worked to get the iPad to complete the upgrade, not even an attempt to restore iPad to factory settings - it is stuck in the "plug to iTunes" mode.
Any suggestions to either uninstall IOS 7.1, to complete the install, or to reset it? At this point, it is a $700 papeweight.

iOS 4.3.1 is the last version of iOS for the iPhone 3G.

If you are already running iOS 4.3.1, there is no further upgrade.

Upgrade to iOS 8.1.1 on a iPhone 4s -- Can't activate WLAN

I have gotten a used iPhone 4s, on which iOS 8 had been installed already. Unfortunately I haven't been able to turn on WLAN.
So I figured out that it might be a good idea to upgrade to iOS 8.1.1 but I can still not activate WLAN.
I am not able to pull the slider in the WLAN menu to activate. It just doesn't work.
Here are the things I have tried already:
hard/cold reboot --> Did not change much. Actually it got worse. So when I tried to open the WLAN menu the settings screen some kind of froze for some time and it did not go into the WLAN menu anymore. No matter how many times I tried it.
Reset of the network settings --> This brought me back to the beginning. I am able to access the WLNA menu but I am not able to pull the slider (activate WLAN)
I have turned on and off the airplane mode --> Nothing changed by doing this
I have turned off Share My Location in the privacy settings --> Nothing changed by doing this
Does anybody can give me a hint to get WLAn to work. I really need this :-(

There is no solution. I hoped that maybe the next software version will fix the problem but nothing happened after installing (via iTunes, because I don't have WIFI) the new 8.1.1. Slider is grey and there is no physical force to move it to green. No WIFI at all. It worked for one day once I had this brilliant idea to upgrade to iOs 8 (the worst idea of my life, #1, I have to say), then I lost the network and when I connected again to my carrier, the WIFI button was gone.
Much ado about nothing, I am one of the thousands with the same problem, and my carrier said, that the only solution is to change the phone.
You bought the used iPhone because the guy selling it KNEW that is its functionality is broken, and happily he found a naive customer.
And you can't make a reclamation, because it is not a problem of the phone, but the software. But Apple doesn't care. They expect that we will get tired and will buy another Apple phone.

Is you Gmail an Exchange based one (so it will Push)? Is the other account (smtp is a type of server) an Exchange account? POP or iMAP?

This was driving me crazy. Sync between Outlook 2007 and my iphone was working perfectly on ios 6 - I primarily sync Calendar, contacts, and notes.
Then everything went bizerk with ios 7... All of a sudden nothing was getting syncronized, but rather multiple Calendars and Contacts showed up in Outlook 2007. Disabling Calendar, contacts, and Notes in my iphone's icloud settings did the trick. Now I have ONE Calendar and ONE contact list in Outlook, fully in sync with my iphone.
