Upgrade to iOS4 deleted all my SMS messages

After the about 4 hours it took to upgrade to iOS 4, all my contacts and my SMS messages were deleted. Fortunately I could get my contacts back from my computer (even though I have MobileMe, the contacts just wouldn't transfer to my phone) but all my text messages are gone.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Do you know if there's a way to get them back?

!!! and now i just realized that all my app data is gone. lists, notes, camera roll, game scores....
all this data it should theoretically be contained in the backup, yet it just puts the app on in their original default condition.
this has gone from bad to worse.

If you backed up to your computer recently (should do this automatically when you sync, unless you disabled it), then you can restore the backup. Not really worth it, unless you've got a show stopper SMS message.

The Delete All button shows up at the bottom of the screen. Hit it! You’re done! Use iTunes to backup files from your old ipod first then transfer to the new iPod. Please
follow the steps in How to transfer your backup from one iOS device to a new device. By the way, if you don't have the iTunes, you can use this iPhone transfer program. It help you to transfer sms and contacts from iPhone.

iCloud does not delete your mail when full, you have some other problem.

Hotmail in OS X Mail: DELETED all of my messages?

right now i absolutely despise OS X's Mail program. I've been using Entourage for a while and decided it'd be nice to just use all Apple software, but boy did i make the wrong decision.
it seemed like i was able to sync my hotmail account up fine with my OS X Mail, but something ended up happening and all of my messages from my hotmail folders disappeared. I went to hotmail.com to check my actual folders and alas, all the messages are gone from there too. Either OS X Mail somehow just deleted all of my messages (years worth of saved stuff) or it put it somewhere on my computer. I went to Library/Mail, but all of the folders in there that have the same names as my hotmail subfolders seem to be empty, unless i'm missing something. it just seems completely unreal that all of my messages just suddenly disappeared. Apple can't suck that badly...
can anyone please help me with this? i'd really like to use OS X Mail, but i can't be having this! i also had several other problems with it, including messages i sent through hotmail via the OS X Mail didn't appear in the Sent folder when i log into hotmail.com. Entourage did this perfectly.

Mail isn't at fault, since it can't control what you see on Hotmail. It all depends on how the server is setup, but many web-based services will not show any indication of receiving an email from the same address that has been sent through their system. Some will, some won't. If you do this in Gmail, it will show it,but it won't download it; if you do it in Yahoo! Mail, it won't even show the email.

Only if you stop using Hotmail, or just use the Hotmail web-based interface for everything and store your messages online.
i'd prefer to not even save copies to my computer. or do i have to in order for me to have access to them on Mail and Entourage?
If you want to be able to read them on your Mac, you have to download them.

It's very possible to get your messages back. Verizon Messages (app) from the Play Store has options both to restore and back up your messages. They can be downloaded as a file and saved on the device or SD card. By pulling the menu out from the left side and choosing "Restore Conversations", you can (hopefully) restore your lost messages but it says for 90 days. I hope this doesn't reach you too late.

I have similar problem. I deleted contents of an iMessage from a spcific contact.
I tried to restore them from backup however, it restored to certain date and it still lacks about 2 months. Is there a way to get those important 2 months?

An Apple genius told me to delete all my SMS for stability sake, should I do it?

I'm experiencing random reboots on my iPhone4 so i've been to an Apple Genius Bar.
He told me my problems might come from a corrupted backup file.
To try to get rid of this I shall restore my iPhone and register it as a New One.
In the process I will lost all my SMS (1500+) and he say Apple provide no methods to restore them after this process.
Well this is quite a hard remedy as I backup on my iMac(+TM) and on iCloud and previoulsy i got it synced with the yet dead MobileMe.
What should I do is there an alternative?
I lived with random reboot since 6 month, i'm not sure its far worse than loosing memories...
Will Apple provide a way to Sync SMS with iMessage on Mountain Lion in a near futur?
If so it would totaly worth the wait for me!

Its really frustrating and annoying..when i get a new message, it even separates into a different contact column..Lets say after i message my gf,when i get a reply i have two sections of my gf msg,one the one i sent and one the one she sent at the messages main menu. When i try to open the one i receive, the sms program shuts down itself back to iphone homepage menu!! When i reopen the sms program, all the messages is lost!! There not an iMessages app on the Mac.
The App is called Messages.
It can use the iMessages system if you add an Apple ID in the Account settings.
Conversations (from Contacts in the iMessages account) and Chats (From Buddies from all other account types) can be displayed in the Main Messages window that also acts as an interface for some of the apps functions.
This main window can display multiple chats/conversations at once.
Mousing over the Side Bar will reveal an x for each one. This can be used to remove that Chat or Conversation from view.
iMessages as a whole are stored in ~/Library/Messages across three .db items
Deleting these will remove the contents of the Chat/Conversation side of the main window on restarting it.
I have only removed the chat.db item myself and this does not remove the Side Bar info. (it means you see empty conversations).
There is also a setting for Save on Close in Messages Menu > Preferences >General Section that stores all Chats/Conversations when the app is Quit or ended in some form such as leaving the app open but Shutting down the computer or if you dismiss a chat as listed above.
These are stored in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive and then in dated folders.
The Archive of Stored Chats and the .db items are used in the "History" when you reconnect to someone and the previous "chat" shows up.
This should be enough info for you to delete the bites you want to.

Is it normal for the phone to delete all text messages without warning? I tried to send a text, the screen went black with the apple logo and when the phone started back up, all texts were gone :(

If you backed up the phone BEFORE the messages disappeared, they can be restored by restoring the backup:
1. Disable automatic syncing on connection in iTunes prefs > Devices > Disable....
2. Connect phone.
3. Right-click the device tab on left border of iTunes window and select "Restore from backup."
