Upgrade to iphone 5 using another upgrade
I have 5 lines on my plan. Only one line is a smart phone which is a droid and is not eligible for an upgrade until May 2013. 3 of the other lines on my plan our eligible for an upgrade but are not smart phones. Would I be able to use one of these upgrades for the iPhone 5 and activate it to the line that my Droid is on? My only concern is committing to another data plan on a line that is not a smart phone. I understand you not wanting to add an additional data plan on a line that will not be needing it. As mdram4x4 mentioned you can use the upgrade eligibility of your other line to get the iPhone 5 on the line that already has a data plan. You can do an alternate upgrade, which is basically just transferring the upgrade to another line on the account. Visit http://bit.ly/RiHrRf for more information.

Go into Settings > Store, at the bottom select your Apple ID, sign out, and sign in with the new one. -

You were told you could use the other SIM, so long as it was one the carrier your phone is locked to, if locked, and it the phone is unlocked it wouldn't matter. You could use it as an iPod then, but it has to be activated and activation requires a SIM.
If the phone you have is locked to a carrier other than the one your friend's SIM is from, then you cannot use their SIM. If the phone is unlocked, then you could use their SIM. -

You need to have a sim in the phone to be able to activate it. It does not need to be an active sim and can be an old one. If the phone is locked to a carrier then you need to have a sim from that carrier to activate the phone

Question on using another family members upgrade
Okay, so I plan to pre-order the iPhone 4 on the 3rd, but I am not eligible for an upgrade yet. However, my uncle is eligible and has said that I can use his upgrade. When I order the iPhone 4 using his line, how exactly do I then activate it for my line? Please note that he lives in a different state right now, so I won't have his phone available to me during this process. is his phone needed at all?
During the preorder for the iphone you will not be able to select " Alternate Upgrade". The functionality of the alternate upgrade will become available online at a later date. To process the upgrade online for the iPhone, you will have to select the line that is eligible for the upgrade. Once you receive the device and activate it you may then swap the ESN to the line of your choice. To swap the ESN to your device contact our customer service team.

I'm glad to hear you'll be taking advantage of an alternate upgrade on your lines. As previously mentioned, this can be done directly from My Verizon, where you can compare up to five devices and decide which device is perfect for you. Keep in mind you'll first select the line that is eligible for an upgrade. Once this is done you will get an option to choose the line where the device will be activated. Sorry... But... The Apple ID and Password that was Originally used to Activate the iDevice is required.
If you cannot get this information from the seller
Removing a device from a previous owner’s account
You need to return the Device for a refund, as you will not be able to re-activate it.
There is No Workaroud for Activation Lock. -

I have an Iphone 4 using ios 4.2.6 and need to upgrade to at least ios 4.3 or better yet ios 5. I have never received any update notices. I understand upgrades are through Itunes but when I go to Itunes downloads there is nothing there. Help!

any body help me?The only person that can help you is the prior owner with Apple ID and password.
Without that it is completely worthless.
If you can't get the Apple ID and password then return for a refund of your money.
