Upgrade to iphoto6

I have an ibook G4 OSX 10.4.11 with iphoto5, and I have been making photo books which will not work after sept. of 09, the new software will not be supported on my old system and I want to keep this laptop another year...can i install iphoto6 to keep making iphoto books for a while?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Yes. Assuming you have enough RAM you can also install iPhoto 08.

  • IPhoto 5 slideshow music still available after upgrade to iPhoto6?

I've just upgraded to iPhoto6 and see that the default slideshow music has changed. I'd still like to use the iPhoto5 default music - does anyone know if this should still be available?

iLife 6 installs a new bunch of sounds, tunes, Garageband loops, etc. as well as the older ones. I believe you will be very impressed with the assortment that Apple provides (/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/iLife Sound Effects Folder). I know I was!

  • Upgraded to iPhoto6 and photo library didn't come with it

i just upgraded to iPhoto6 and got a message that my library couldn't be upgraded because some files were locked. i changed the permissions on the whole library and unlocked everything. now when i open iPhoto6, there are simply no photos (i had more than 9,000 in my library). i tried to import them manually using the "Import to Library" command, but get a message saying the files are "unreadable".
i read some help files and tried the suggestions with a command in the console and also tried rebuilding the library, but so far no luck with anything. suggestions? thanks.

    Laura:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's unfortunate you didn't make a backup of your iPhoto Library folder before updating to V6.
You may be out of luck on the albums, etc. but here's one possible way to fairly quickly locate the full sized image file and import them into a new iPhoto 6 library. Here's how:
1 - move the iPhoto library folder to the desktop.
    2 - open it and type Command-F.
3 - in the search mode set the following as the search criteria:
    Kind: Images
    Size: Greater than 100 KB
This will bring up all files whose size is greater than the thumbnails in the library.
4 - create a new, clean library and open it.
5 - select all files in the search results window and drag into the open iPhoto window.
This will give you all your photos in one roll. You'll want to create new rolls with files based on whatever criteria is best for your workflow. I personally like to use rolls by month. Here's how you can do that.
1 - select all the photos in the library and use the Photos->Batch Rename to change the title to the Date.
2 - in the main library under the View options sort by title in the ascending direction.
3 - select files by whatever date criteria you want (you could start by year and then break it down later my month) and go to iPhoto->Create file roll menu option. When the roll is created, select it and change the title to whatever you want in the Info pane at the bottom of the Source pane.
When you're done reorganizing I suggest you follow the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
P.S. Those guys don't know diddley squat. All they do is look at themselves in the mirror.

  • Upgraded to iPhoto6 -keywords go missing

    Hi all,
Recently I upgraded iPhoto2 to iPhoto6 on a PowerMac G4 running Tiger (10.4.11) and after the upgrade all the keywords(~40 or so) were gone! I read a number of posts here on the topic and ran across the app iPhoto Library Manager. I downloaded and installed the free version and using the "Rebuild Library" option I was able to rebuild the iPhoto library and re-populate about half of my albums. There remaining albums still have no pics in them.
However, I still see no keywords. As far as I can tell iPhoto6 is still pointed to the old library. How do I point iPhoto6 to use the new rebuilt library, which I see in a separate folder?
Any tips would be greatly appeciated!

    Hi Terance,
That indeed does seem to be the case Is the correct procedure to bring up iPhoto6 for the first time, answer NO to the "Upgrade" question, and then iPhoto6 will display a blank, empty new library in a new folder? Then to get the keywords and other meta-data brought over correctly, one selects "Import" in the new iPhoto6, pointing it to the old iPhoto library and proceed?
That brings up another question. I do have tape backups of the machine, so I could restore the old iPhoto library onto another disc on that machine. In the new iPhoto6 "upgraded" library, are ALL the photos themselves still there? Or, can the iPhoto6 "upgrade" be a potentially destructive process of corrupting or deleting some photo files as well?
I noticed that a large fraction of the "upgraded" library are in the sub-category "Early Photos" and not correctly showing up by date taken. Seems like the "upgrade" process indeed stomps on a number of different meta-data fields during the "upgrade" process. Is the only recourse to fix these photos manually in the GUI?
Thanks again for your answers, they've helped clarify a confusing situation!

  • IPhoto6 Upgrade deleted my Albums and lost many photos

I just upgraded to iPhoto6. When I ran iPhoto6 for the first time, it converted the iPhoto5 library. It also said that it found several photos in the Picture folder that were not in the libray. It found some duplicates and asked if I wanted to import the duplicates. I said no. When the process was finished, all my albums disappeared. How do I get them back?
Then several photos were missing and had many duplicates. I do have a backup of my Photo folder. But everytime I try the upgrade, I get the same mess. How do people succesfully upgrade and maintain albums and all their photos?

Were the photos stored on your iPad or in iCloud.

  • Lost iphoto images upon upgrade

I have upgraded to Iphoto6. When I opened Iphoto, it asked me if I wanted to upgrade the current photos in the Iphoto. I said yes. It upgraded these and they are now in a folder.
The prior folders and slide shows still appear. However, when you try to open them the screen has a blank figure. I think it is a dash. There are not photos showing in these prior folders and slide shows.
Should these be deleted as not useful?
I guess then if I want a slide show I need to remake the slide show from the photos in the upgraded folder?
    Thank you

The photos are in a folder titled; Recovered photos. This folder is along the list of folders. Prior folders, named Brazil, etc. are still there, but they do not seem to have anything in them.
    Thanks for the assisstance.
v6 uses a different file structure to v5 and earlier. Hence the empty Brazil etc. Folder.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
The Standard Warning: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
As to the blanks: This caused by iPhoto being unable to import these pics during the upgrade procedure. If you're sure the blanks correspond to the pics in the Recovered Folder, then delete the blanks from iPhoto and empty the iPhoto Trash. Move the Recovered Folder to the desktop and try re-import the pics from there.

  • How open images from other programs & convert to tiff?

I am new to digital photography. I usually take 2 to 3 MB images with my Canon Rebel XT and use iPhoto as my basic program to organize images, create albums, and do very basic editing. I'm running on a G4 Powerbook with OS10.3. I expect to upgrade to iPhoto6 soon. I also use Canon's Image Browser (because it does a better job of compression for emailing that my present iPhoto) and an abbreviated version of ArcSoft PhotoStudio which came bundled with my Canon and has editing tools similar to Adobe Photoshop Elements.
So far I usually use iPhoto's "Preferences/Open in Other" command when I want to open one or more selected images in one of the other programs. I have not found any easy way to locate an image while working in ImageBrowser or PhotoStudio, because iPhoto assigns folder numbers by date, so I'd have to know in which of many numbered folders to look. Placing images into iPhoto albums does not help because while the album names appear in these program's tree view they appear unable to link to them. Canon refuses to answer questions relating to iPhoto and referred me to ArcSoft for any questions about PhotoStudio. ArcSoft says they provide no support for programs bundled with hardware. Typical. What I'd like to know is:
    1. Is there any easy way to locate iPhoto images while I'm in one of these other programs?
    2. Is there any way to copy an entire album from iPhoto to one of these other programs?
    3. I've attended two different digital photo classes in which instructors felt it desirable to convert jpegs to tiffs. One felt it was necessary to reduce the loss of pixels during editing, and the other does it for any image he plans to print, claiming it improves print quality. They recommended getting a special conversion program. Based on responses here to the topic: "Want to save jpeg file as tiff before making edits to photos", others feel that for most amateurs like me this is a minor issue, especially with iPhoto. Testing this I have found, as Kevin Wolfe1 says Feb 12, that compression of a jpeg appears to occur primarily on the first edit and does not sognificantly degrade the image. The programs I mention above appear able to save an edited jpeg as a tiff if desired, but I've noticed also that iPhoto's Export command includes the option to export a jpeg (to desktop or another folder) as a tiff. When I tried this, it did create a file identified as .tif, and I can drag that file back into the iPhoto Library where it remains named as a .tif, and according to iPhoto, this file contains about 5 times the MBs the original jpeg had. What I'm curious to know is, is that a true tiff file or is iPhoto kidding me?

Typical. What I'd like to know is:
    1. Is there any easy way to locate iPhoto images
while I'm in one of these other programs?
In iPhoto 06 you have the option to NOT move imported image file in to the iPhoto library. So they images stay in the place where you put them. With this option the iPhoto library only contains "pointers".
    2. Is there any way to copy an entire album from
iPhoto to one of these other programs?
Can't you open an album, select all the images then then use "export"
    3. I've attended two different digital photo classes
in which instructors felt it desirable to convert
    jpegs to tiffs.
If you are worried about this then you should be shooting RAW format. In your case the camera is doing the JPG conversion and the "damage" is unrecoverable.
iPhoto 6 and Tigeer (10.4.x) has a little bit better supportfor raw format images i yu are worried about something that makes such a small difference then you should be woried about the stuf that makes a large difference first.
You might want to concider this workflow:
    1) use Canon software to download files from camera
    2) use Canon software to convert to TIFF
    3) Import TIFF to iPhoto (using option to NOT consolidate library
    4) specify arcedit, PS or Gimp as your external editor
Others might want to lt iPhoto do the import and raw conversion but you said you wanted thr photos to be stored outside of iPhoto's library system you you can find them with out having to do an export.

  • Good photo printer???

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good photo printer? I was using a Kodak Easyshare Printer dock plus, but since upgrading to iPhoto6, it's seems that it's no longer supported. I'm only using it for personal use, not a professional photographer, but I want pictures of my son to look good and not fade. Some from a compact HP photo printer have faded after only 2 years. I'm not too concerned about cost at this point, just need some advice I can run with. Any suggestions?? Thanks.
iMac (intel)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I too have the Epson R200 and it works great for the average user who wants photo quality photos. I use mine for presentations with photo glossy paper (I highly suggest because everyone goes "Oooo Ahhhh"). I believe they don't sell the R200 anymore but the Epson R220 is the updated version. I love my Epson so much that I bought my parents one for Christmas. They needed a all in one so I bought them the Epson Stylus Photo RX700. They really love it because they scan in old wedding pictures or pictures when my brothers and I were kids. Then they print them out and show them off to friends. It is a little pricey, but it is an all around good choice. Now my brother came to me recently and asked which printer company I liked. As you probably have guessed, I told him Epson. So since he is getting his second major in Photography he went out and bought the Epson Stylus Pro 4800 Professional Edition. He wasn't on iChat so I don't know anything about it, but it looks really nice. It is extremely expensive though, over two grand. That is some comparison that I though you might be interested in. I have used Epson since I bought the original iMac (I believe) and have always enjoyed them. They have yet to fail me, yet to fail, and best of all, they make wonderful pictures even around 4 years later.
    I hope that helps,
    Jon
PS I think anything really from Cannon or Epson will suit your needs. Those are the only two companies that I trust for good quality.

  • "Edit photo - Using Full Screen"

Am I missing something? This hot tip seems to be nonsense:
"Automatically open photos full screen on double click
To make it easier to view your photos in glorious full screen, go the General area of the iPhoto preferences. There you can choose to "Edit photo - Using Full Screen". This will allow you to view any photo in full screen simply by double clicking its thumbnail in the organize view."
There is no such Using Full Screen option when I go to the General area of Preferences....
    Any hints?

For no apparent reason, my laptop starting opening my photos, when I double clicked on them, in my printer editing program. For the past couple of years, it always opened up in the iPhoto large screen editing option. Don't know why it suddenly changed. (I had not yet upgraded to iPhoto6). Thank you for telling me where to make the change. It works. I like the option of the two large black arrows below the main photo, so that I can go from one to another while the photos are still large and also stay in the iPhoto program.
I hope "caliban" found that option and corrected his problem.

  • "pixelated" effect on printed photos

I burn my iPhotos to CD then take them to (various) professional or discount photolabs for printing. They return looking oddly "pixelated": rather than a clean clear photo, you can actually see tiny pixels. The CD is always opened on a non-Mac computer at the various photolabs (it's happened regardless of where I take them), and often, the technician tells me there are "multiple files" of the same photos - asking me which ones to print. Some have this effect, others I seem to get lucky on and come out clear. This happened even before I upgraded to iPhoto6. Any one with any thoughts? I burn directly from my iPhoto albums, and it doesn't matter whether I burn an existing album, or move the ones I want into a newly created album. Thanks!

    Gail
Do you use the Share -> Burn command to create these discs?
The best way to do this - and make sure there are no multiples, is to go File -> Export and export your pics to a folder on the desktop, then burn that folder using the Finder. That way you'll get a single version of each pic.
My guess is that they're printing the one's in the Data Folder - which are the thumbnails that the app uses to display the pics in the iPhoto Window. These are tiny low resolution files, hence the pixellation.

  • Some photos in directory aren't showing in library anymore

i recently upgraded to iphoto6 and everything was fine, until i noticed that not all of my film rolls were there....(they were there to begin with in iphoto6) there are now about a month of photos that i can see in the directory and aren't showing in the library. i have started iphoto holding down apple and option and checked all 4 boxes. it didn't help. i'm not sure how to get it to recognize those pictures and exhibit them in the library again. does anyone have any ideas?

    Hello Tommy!
Using iMovie HD (5) or iMovie 6 is one way of doing it. Another, to circumvent the reasons explained previously, is to use an application like Photo to Movie, with which I am currently experimenting. Many will tell you that this, and/or its competitor PhotoMagico, does a better job.
But you are actually asking the wrong person (and with a bit of luck one of the resident experts in slide shows will chip in, although it would have been better if you has started your own thread) as I have yet to make one!
I have used photos in movie projects as an 'epilogue' to the movie and that has worked fine, but I am still at the stage of scanning in some 6,000 old negatives and slides view a view to making slide shows, as well as digital data DVDs, for posterity!
So for the time being I shall simply share your learning curve!

  • Sharing pic to desktop

I have just upgraded to iPhoto6 and now under the "share" menu, 'desktop' is grayed out. Why would that be? I am unable to send any photo to the desktop.

    Hello, Maverick,
Sorry you are having so much trouble. Are you selecting the photo in 'edit' mode? The toolbar options might be grayed out in this instance, although the 'desktop' option under 'Share' should still be ok.
Try selecting the photo, and then going to "File->Export" and choose the options of size and format. Click on 'export.' You should then have another window that asks you to choose the location for the exported photo, and you can select 'Desktop' from that. A few more steps, but should work.

  • Originals treated as recovered photos

I upgraded to iphoto6 and on all but my most recent photos, I can't "revert to original" The first time I opened iphoto6 it said I had about 1200 photos not in the library and wanted to know what to do with them. I imported them and even though I checked the "do not duplicate" option, I ended up with lots of duplicate photos, the originals next to the rotated photos for example. I trased the library and started over, this time saying to ignore the 1200 photos not in the library. It put them in a separate folder in the iphoto library called "recovered photos." It turns out thats all the original, unedited, photos.
Why didn't it recognize them as originals and transfer them as such?

I have just imported a v5 iPhoto database to v6 and had the same problem.
When I opened iPhoto v6 for the first time, it had to convert my database. Toward the end it put up a dialog screen asking if I wanted to import other files it found which were not in my iPhoto library. I said no. (I incorrectly assumed it meant it had found other iPhoto libraries I have in the same folder so I didn't want them lumped together).
Once the data was converted, I looked in the Recovered Photos folder and it turns out there are all kinds of photos there. Checking, I discovered they are duplicates of ones I have in iPhoto but they seem to be the original versions (rotated wrong, etc).
Is there any way to reassociate these with their current counterparts in iPHoto?

  • Any way to revert to old folder tree?

Hi - just upgraded to iPhoto6, and would /much/ prefer to have my directory tree as it was in version 4, where it was YEAR > MONTH > DAY, as that was the easiest way to find my way to a specific picture when I had one highlighted in iPhoto, with the info tab open, from another application. It was also a much easier way to navigate to a specific picture when I didn't feel like opening iPhoto when I knew on which date I took a specific picture.
So, is there any way to force it to use that old directory tree by organizing the folders in that way, rather than the roll #? Or, is there a way for the roll number to show up in the info tab in the lower left corner? Thanks...

    Hi Keith,
First in library view, go to
    View>Film rolls
    then
    View>sort>by film rolls
Now you can see the film roll your photo is in.
Next, I name my film rolls with the date and a couple of words.
    Such as "1/24/06 Fire pit"
When you change the title of the film roll within iPhoto, the title will also change in the Finder.
this will make images easy to find.
oh, you can't go back to the old structure. This new one, when you use it right is very handy.
Also, if the other application supports drag and drop, you can drag the image right from the library view to the application.
You can also set up an external editor in iPhoto Preferences. Once set up, you can control click on an image and open it in the edit mode, edit window, full screen, or the external editor you chose in the iPhoto Preferences.

  • MY IMPORT BUTTON HAS VANISHED!

I have recently upgraded to iphoto6 and the blue import button in my library has vanished. Is that no longer an option? I have imported 10,000 photos in the past 3 years via a flash card reader by using this very basic import function and cannot figure what has happened to the button. As an alternative, I went to File > Import to Library but could not figure out where to find the card reader. I then tried to import photos directly from my camera (Nikon D50) and nothing happened when I plugged in the cable both with iphoto closed and then open.
Help...I need to have an empty flash card in the morning!
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

When you do File > Import to Library can you navigate
to the Desktop, and do you see your card reader at
the Desktop level? That's where my card reader goes.
I select columns view in the Finder so that I can see
which pictures I need to import.
    Or, if that doesn't work...
Can you import using Image Capture?
Thanks for the advice. When I tried to go to File > Import to Library I was not able to find the card reader but I figured out after that attempt that the port I was using (the front port in the G5 tower) was not working....this probably would have worked if I'd plugged the card reader into the rear port which what I ended up doing with a cable connected directly to my camera.
