Upgrade to Leopard or stay with Tiger?

I'm in need of some advice in terms of a newly purchased or rather a used G5 Power Mac 2.0 Ghz along with a few apps like DVDSP 4 upgrade, FCP 5, OS X Leoaprd, and iLife'09.
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9696361#9696361
Both the above pro apps are standalone / upgrade versions I found at B&H Photo and also on ebay. In addition, I also ordered Leopard or rather the Mac Box Set - OS X Leopard, iLife/iWork. However, I'm guessing the above pro software / upgrades (as opposed to iLife'09) will actually run a bit better on Tiger as opposed to Leopard. Is this correct?
Here are the items I purchased recently for this used G5 which I'm hoping to work with soon without too many issues:
1. Final Cut Pro 5 HD: Upgrade New. M9922Z/A. 2005 Real time editing for DV, SD, HD and Film.
2. Apple MB997Z/A (SINGLE USER) Software Mac Box Set - OS X Leopard, iLife/iWork
3. DVDSP 4 Upgrade
(I should also point out that most of my work is still done in .DV format captured from a Sony 3 chip TRV900. But eventually I'd like to add a few of the latest formats as well). I won't be buying an intel mac anytime soon and I have no intention / desire to burn Blu-ray in the immediate future. I'm fine with just Single and Dual Layer Verbatim DVD-R.
TIA

Ok. That's one vote for Tiger, DVDSP 4 and FCP 5. (which seems to be supported by the following thread as well):
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2001119&tstart=0
(But I'm leaning toward a separate statup volume for adding iLife'09 and Leopard simply to have them available as well). Any thoughts here?

  • Email won't set up on new computer and leopard, did fine with tiger

A friend has a new mac book with leopard. I've tried to help up email through a local ISP (snowcrest.net) and it won't recognize the server.
When adding the same account to a iMac with Tiger, it works fine.
Is there a manual way to change the port when using the "easy add" method?
The incoming mail server is: mail.snowcrest.net
    The outgoing is: mail.snowcrest.net.
Should the port be at 25?
    Thanks for any help.

Same problem here. I want to create an account for my wife, but when, in Mail, I give in her e-mail address, pop-server and password, it tries to connect to the server - no avail.
I check this in Tiger, and the connection is created without any problem. So please, fix this Leopard bug!

  • Does it pay to upgrade to Leopard?

Hi: I have a 1.5 GHz, Mac Mini core solo; upgraded to 2 Gigs of Ram, and I currently run OS 10.4.11 with Tiger.
My mini now runs fine, and I was wondering if it would be better for me to upgrade to Leopard (with all the new security updates), or stay with Tiger for at least another year before any bugs are worked out of the newest Leopard? I'd very much appreciate your advice. Thanks, Jerry.

As a user who migrated to Leopard early on in most of my systems, I'd say that by and large if there is nothing offered in 10.5 that you feel you need or that would be advantageous to you, there is really no reason to upgrade from Tiger. There are no security benefits of Leopard that either are not already in Tiger, or which would not be added to it by updates Apple release, and no inherent performance benefits of Leopard which make it a compelling choice.
In itself, Tiger is a solid, reliable and powerful OS which has had plenty of time to have had the bugs ironed out.
There are features in Leopard you might find compelling. Spaces or Time Machine for example. If these sort of extras figure in your plans, then it makes sense to upgrade, and thus take advantage of them, without delay. Otherwise in your situation I'd stick where you are.

  • Missing user account after upgrading to leopard

I upgraded to leopard last night from tiger. I now notice that my girlfriend's account is missing when I am at the select user screen.
I can see that there is a directory with her name on it under users. Also I noticed that there is now a group created with her name which all other accounts are now members of.
Can I just copy the contents of her folder, make a new account and then just replace it back?
There are a lot of photos in her account so I want to proceed with great caution.
I will definitely be investigating some backup options after this experience.

Yes, you can copy the contents of her folder (i.e. Documents, Music, Pictures... not sure what you mean by "replace it back"?

  • What to be aware of upgrading from 10.2.8 to Tiger

I have an iMac superdrive G4 17" flatpanel. I am running on 10.2.8 currently but am considering upgrading to Tiger. What should I be aware of with regards to my software if I do upgrade - most importantly my Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, InDesign 2 (am not wanting to invest in all the upgrades of that and Tiger at the same time) -or for my Epson printer drive? I'm just worried that I'll upgrade and find that much of what is on my computer will now have difficulties and require more $...
    Any help or advice?
    thanks,
    Tracy

    Hello TracyZ:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I do not use those applications so I have no first hand knowledge. I would check with the manufacturer's web site to check on compatibility. You might also do a search of the OS X 10.4 forums to gain additional information. The printer "should" work - but, again, check to see if Epson has upgraded the driver to work with Tiger.
If you decide to upgrade, have a good backup (I just described my own approach to back up and upgrading here):

I am a fan of OS X 10.4 - I really like the Safari version (2.0.1). That Safari has a built-in RSS reader - great for us news junkies.

  • Can't use Airport Express after upgrading to Leopard

I use Airport Express for wireless printing and AirTunes via powered speakers/hifi. It was working very reliably until I upgraded to Leopard. Now, I am unable to use Airport Express. I get the blinking orange light, but when I scan with Airport Utility, Airport Express is not detected. Manual setup is grayed out, so I can't set it up at all. I am using Airport Utility Version 5.2.2 (522.3), and there does not seem to be any updates or patches to apply at the moment. I have tried on my iMac G5 and MacBook, with the same result on both computers.
I am also reading that many others are having problems with Airport Express after upgrading to Leopard, perhaps not with my specific hardware configuration, but this is very disappointing.
I am open to suggestions to try a few things to get it working, so any help is appreciated.

From the Mail menu, select "Preferences". Hit the Accounts tab. Select the Account. Under Account Information, reapply the user name and password.
Check with the provider if the account needs authentication. This is in the Advanced tab. Usually just a repeat of user name and password.

  • How to install Windows 7 on MacBook with Tiger + Leopard upgrade using Boot Camp

    Hi,
I've had Vista installed on a separate partition on my MacBook for a while, but wanted to upgrade to Windows 7. I've completely wiped the HDD, re-installed Tiger, upgraded to Leopard and installed Windows 7 using boot camp from within OSX. However, I now can't boot back into OSX - I believe it's because I don't have the latest version of Boot Camp within Windows 7 (it doesn't appear on the task bar), but I also don't have a full copy of Leopard, only the upgrade disk.
Is there any way to (a) boot back into OSX (I've tried holding down the option key and this doesn't work) and (b) installing a version of Boot Camp that will enable me to switch between both operating systems as I was when Vista was installed & without having to purchase the full copy of Leopard?
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Elliot.

Try to boot from the 10.4 disk then and "Repair Disk". If you can, then try booting from the 10.5 disk and do the same.
Have you tried holding down the C key also when trying to boot from the Install disks? It could take 30 seconds to a minute or more for the C key/Option key reboots. The Mac DVD HAS to be the OS installer disk not the applications installer, etc,. Sorry if I keep bringing this up.
You have to keep holding it down the whole time it boots, either it will bypass it and reboot into Windows or it should get to the boot loader window with at least Windows showing up.
If you can still boot into Windows with no problems then Windows SHOULD show up in the boot loader window. (C key/Option key) It's hardware related, it's the computers manual way of looking for a bootable OS if there's no OS installed yet.
Don't forget to disconnect any USB devices until you get it fixed.
Also try to boot from the Windows  installer disk and "Repair Windows" and see what happens.
Other then your DVD drive may be on it's last legs, I can't really think of any reason you can't boot from the Mac DVD's.  All the other post's I searched for eventually got the DVD boot working, even 10.6 and 10.7 are having that issue, tho rarely.

Hi, ...........inserting the Leopard disk once in Windows to install boot camp and it says that the version on the DVD is only compatible with XP SP2 or Vista.................
Don't run the installer this time, if a window pops up to "Run" or "Open",  just open it. If it doesn't open the DVD and look for the BootCamp.exe. Right click on the .exe (or whatever it's called) and select the trouble shoot compatibility mode and select Vista. Yes, I know you have W7. See if that works.
It may have buggered the Mac OS side so you may have to get DiskWarrior (worked for some) or the like in order to fix it. It would definitely be useful in the future.

You can go strait to SL, all you need is a retail SL DVD available from Apple for $20. The US online store has them at:

  • MB Pro, with Tiger, which has since upgraded to Leopard - Install Discs?

My MacBook Pro had originally been installed with Tiger. I have since upgraded to Leopard.
Should I need to boot from my install discs, which install disc do I use? Will my Tiger install discs work with Leopard, or should I use my Leopard disc (retail version)?
    Thank you!

    {quote:title=Kappy wrote:}
Actually you would be better to install Leopard directly. You can reinstall pre-bundled software separately without installing Tiger. An Erase and Install of Leopard would be preferable to installing Tiger then upgrading to Leopard. Less chance of a problem.
    Hi Kappy,
Some, at least, of the late 2007 MBP C2D 2.2 and 2.4 GHz MBPs (mine included) actually came with Tiger Installed, but with a "drop in" copy of Leopard enclosed in the box. From memory the version of Leopard included will only install if the original software is in place. (I'm not 100% certain of this, but I'll check) Not sure what Trisha's situation is, of course, but worth bearing in mind as a possible issue.
    Cheers

  • Upgraded to Lion, wish I'd stayed with Snow Leopard

    Just venting here....
I bought my first Mac in 1985, and I have been using them ever since. I have always eagerly anticipated the release of a new OS, and I have never been disappointed--until now. I upgraded to Lion on the first day it came out, and I wish I had just stayed with Snow Leopard. Some of the changes baffle me, as well as the absence of useful features I'd come to rely on in Leopard and Snow Leopard.
Oh, well. I'm hoping I will grow to like Lion as time goes on.

Well, one reason for this is that you know FCP very well...
All the more reason to stay with it, though it does appear that Apple has turned their collective backs on users, such as you.
Now, one answer would be for Adobe to throw away PrPro, then license the code from Apple, and create FCP8, which many previous users want. Oh wait, they have done almost that, just to get the FCP users to jump ship, regardless of what the loyal PrPro users were accustomed to.
Maybe all you have to do is wait a bit, and soon PrPro will actually become FCP8?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

I have an iPad and iPhone but am stuck with Tiger and Leopard on my old powerbook G4.  Will I still be able to get my email on my PowerBook after I upgrade to iCloud?  I don't have the cash to upgrade the mac right now.  Just wondering what my email options are.  Thank You.

You will be able to get your mail on the PowerBook. The calendars (iCal) will not sync; any events added to iPad and/or iPhone will not sync with the Mac but will sync with each other (that is: the mobile devices which are on iCloud). My  MacBook Pro (Lion) and iPad2 (iOS5) sync fine; I still get my Mail on iBook G4, MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) and iMac (Snow Leopard).

Hi Carol, good/sound advice by Ziatron so far.
We need more info about your Mac to see if it will even be capable,
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...
    Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

    SMC Version (system): 1.21f4
You'll need to buy SL/10.6 first & get it to 10.6.8, then get Lion... if you can run it.
Or if you can erase your disk...

    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, (I say 4GB)
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, (I say 40GB at least)
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
It looks like Apple will have Lion available on USB drives for $69...

Unfortunately HP is slow in updating software for Leopard compatibility. If you search this forum you will find some solutions for your problem.
First, check HP's website for the latest software.
I believe that uninstalling your current HP software and either reinstalling it or installing more recent software usually solves the problem.
There was also an issue with Canon scanners.
Here are a few links to look at:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01234231&cc=us&dlc=e n&lc=en&jumpid=regR1002USEN

I personally gave up with HP a while ago, while still using PCs. I switched to Epson and both my Epson printers and my Epson scanner work fine with all my computers, PC and Mac. That was my solution.

  • Problem with tiger to snow leopard upgrade

    Hi,
I wanted to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard and bought a retail 10.6 Snow Leopard install disc MC223Z/A. on the box. 2Z691-6428-A on the disc.
It would not let me install it unless I erased and partitioned the destination disc thus losing my settings and preferences like the old Archive and Install as it suggested in the article mentioned below..
I tried this after reading this article
    http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9137147/Upgrading_to_Apple_s_Snow_Leopard _OS_What_you_need_to_know.
I presume now that the article was written for upgrading from Leopard and not Tiger.
Perhaps I missed something when I tried.
    Any ideas from the experts.

A 2005 PowerBook has enough horsepower ro run OS 10.5 Leopard If you have enought RAM. However, no pre-Intel Mac can use any higher Mac OS. 10.6 and higher MUST have an Intel processor, a feature not incorporated in Mac notebooks until 2006.
